INTERNATIONAL SPORTS- A DEMONSTRATION OF NATIONALISM OR GLOBALIZATION

NATIONALISM AND GLOBALIZATION IN SPORTS• Nationalism- spirit or aspirations common to the whole of a nation, devotion and loyalty

to one's own country, excessive patriotism

• Globalization in sports - the advertising of products through sports. Nowadays, you see people from India wearing NFL hats, people from America wearing soccer jerseys with the names Messi or Henri, and people from France wearing basketball caps. This is all caused from globalization, or the integration of facets of life from different cultures into comprehensive proclivities.

THE WORLD JUNIORS HOCKEY TOURNAMENT-GLOBALIZATION

The World Junior Hockey Championships is a great place for globalization to take place. Tournaments of this size people watch all over the world so if you can get your product on one of the boards in a game or just make a commercial about your product during that time frame you have already got people talking about your product. Some of the main advertisers and sponsors would be the actual hockey players equipment. For example, many of the teams will all get the same gloves or the same sticks so when little kids see that one of team Canada's top scorer wears a pair of Bauer gloves that is what all the little boys will want. Bauer can now raise the price of these certain gloves because they know that the people will be wanting to buy them so the sales have all increased. Gatorade is another big supporter of the World junior Hockey tournament because if you look around all the athletes have Gatorade water bottles , they drink Gatorade to revives themselves and even if they get injured they are holding a towel with the Gatorade logo on it. Globalization is a key part in the functioning of any major sporting event because with out company's products we wouldn't be able to have the events put on and the companies sales would all drop.

SOCCER • Soccer

• For much of the world soccer has long served as a form of ritual combat onto which neighborhoods, tribes and even nations could project their passion for the game of soccer.

• The forces of globalization are challenging long-established notions of identity, by eroding traditional boundaries of nation and tribe. Globalization also impacts the professional game of soccer, challenging some of the traditional bases of identification with the game.

GYMNASTICS • What is gymnastics?

- Gymnastics is a sport involving flexibility, strength, power, agility, coordination, and balance.

- All country teams that enter competitive gymnastics are governed under the FIG( Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique).

- Competitive artistic gymnastics is the most widely known gymnastics. Womens artistic gymnastics involve uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, and vault.

- Other types of gymnastics are trampolining, Team Gym, tumbling, rhythmic gymnastics, aerobic gymnastics and acrobatic gymnastics.

• How is it a Nationalistic Sport?

- Each country selects its top gymnasts and they get put onto a team to compete in the Olympics for their country.

- There Leo’s (leotards) they wear represent the colors on the flag of their country.

- - Gymnastics is an Olympic sport, people come from all over to watch and support their country’s team.

- - Gymnasts’ take pride and accept a huge responsibility when chosen to represent their country in one or more events at the Olympics.

HORSEBACK RIDING

• Horseback riding takes an individual and a noble companion. You and your horse will work as a team to accomplish maneuvers. You need to be able to trust your partner and need to be a perfect fit and be able to get along. This sport is one of the most risky and skill taking sport in the Olympics because you are working with live animals and are so unpredictable. In the Olympics almost all countries are involved and all do well in there event. There are so many different riding events you can compete in. one of the main ones in the Olympics is show jumping. That is when you jump you and your horse over obstacles. The heights of the jumps vary greatly depending on what skill level you are in. The riding events take a lot of money to do because as we all know horses are not cheap. To transport animals from other countries to compete and to pay for the care of your animal can be rather pricey; therefore every rider has a sponsor. This brings me to talking about how horseback riding is a nationalism sport. Nationalism has everything to do with your nation this is why horseback riding is nationalism. When you compete around the world you go with your nation and you have many fans from your nation supporting you as well. Riding is just like any other team sport, every person has a favorite hockey team or a favorite soccer team, riding is kind of the same because the fans all have a favorite rider or a favorite show jumping horse. Nationalism is also loyalty to your country.

NATIONALISM OR GLOBALIZATION?As a group we feel that through our research we have

decided that major sporting events is a better demonstration of nationalism because of what it can do for a country or even a community. It brings people closer together and gives the world something to cheer for and not against. It also gives the people something to talk about that doesn’t relate directly to the government or the economy.
