It was a great sadnessfor us to have had tocancel our conference inOrlando. I was reallylooking forward toseeing you all again andI know that our decisionmight appear to beanother knock-back.But I don’t look at itthat way. Having comeso far in fighting thispandemic, it makes nosense to rush thingsnow. We are muchbetter being a littlecautious, giving theworld a little longer tocorrect itself, and thenresume business asusual, when the time isright.

Meanwhile I wanted to thank allthose of you who attended ourZoom meetings on 3 June. We aretruly blessed to be living during atime when technology allows usto defy geography, still sharingtime together, supporting eachother and learning as a group.The pandemic has taught us howto do things differently and someof those new ways mightcomplement our traditionalmethods and stay with us longafter the absolute need hassubsided. I can see that we will bemaking much better use of thistype of communicationtechnology well into the future.

One example we are doing now isour Tradewing CommunityPlatform. It’s a combination ofFacebook and LinkedIn just forPAIMA members to use to swapideas, share information and keepin touch with each other. If you’dlike to join in, just e-mail the office [email protected] andTony will let you in.

As this pandemic runs its course, Ibelieve that we can all rejoice thatwe have had our network behindus. Rather than diminish our role,COVID has accentuated it. It hasdemonstrated how we can alltake strength from each otherduring times of crisis. So, I askyou all to continue undaunted, aslong as the world’s troublespersist and long after, to keepworking together, supportingeach other and being friends. Askyourself every day: What can I doto help someone else in thenetwork? That way we will alltriumph.

All being well, we will meet againin Seattle next year. It’s awonderful city. When it’s time toparty – we’ll party!

Dear PAIMA Members,

Thank you to all those whocontributed to the magazine thistime. I know that it’s very easy, whenyou are busy, to hunker down and tryto forget that there is a big world outthere. Sometimes remembering tosend out a press release, aboutsomething that’s going on in thecompany, can seem to be low priority.

But a good PR story, published in a magazine ratherthan on social media, is a very powerful thing. Itsays much more than a post on LinkedIn orFacebook could ever say. Not only does it tell theworld that you have done something good, or havea strong opinion that you would like to share, it alsotells the readers that I, someone who is totallyunbiased, thinks it’s interesting too. Anyone can saygood things about themselves (on social media), butit has much more impact when someone else doesthe talking for you. Don’t you agree?

Now please don’t think that I object to social media.Most of the time I think it’s very useful. But if youhave stories to share, remember to send them tome at the PAIMA Report as well. I might not publishthem all, but if you don’t send them to me, I won’tprint any of them.

Finally, I too am sorry that the Orlando conferencewas cancelled. But my Dad was one of the designersof the Boeing 747 in Seattle in the 1960s and I amtickled silly to have the chance to go there next yearto see where it all happened. I hope you’ll becoming along too.

Well, it was a great shame.After so many months ofhoping, wishing and theholding of breath, the PAIMABoard was given no option butto cancel the 37th AnnualConvention in Orlando.

Despite the obvious and eternalattractions of Donald Duck andMicky Mouse, holding aninternational conference, withCOVID still firmly holding on inso many countries worldwide,proved to be impractical. TheBoard had a lot to consider. Thehealth of PAIMA members wasmost important of course.

There were also the difficultieswith international travel whichmade it impossible to estimatehow many delegates would beable to attend. The time hadcome when deposits had to bemade to venues and vendors toconfirm contracts, but withoutprecise numbers, this wasimpossible. And there were thelimitations of social distancingguidelines which would,undoubtedly, have put a strainon networking during theconference, which is the mainpoint of being there.

There was also a practicalproblem in that all the abovemade it impossible to guaranteea quorum for the GeneralAssembly, so no bindingdecisions could have beenmade. All in all, it just seemedmore sensible to let it go andlook to the future, and thebeautiful city of Seattle for 2022.

The plan is to meet in Seattlefrom 27-29 September, 2022where all the suppressedenthusiasm can be collectivelyreleased as we allow the tensionto evaporate and relax intowhat is likely to be a record-breaking conference.

As in 2020, when the conventionwas also canceled, 2021 will notcount towards any member’srequirement to attend at leastonce every other year.

Tradewing Community PlatformThe pandemic has highlightedthe need to communicate morethan ever before. It has alsospawned innovation andencouraged us all tocommunicate in ways that wehave never previouslyconsidered. The PAIMATradewing Community Platform,launched at the beginning ofJuly, is a very good example(screenshot pictured below).

It’s a bit like a combination ofLinkedIn and Facebook. You canset up your own profile, introduceyourself to the other PAIMAmembers, add a photo and holdconversations with the wholegroup or individuals. You caneven earn badges if people likeyour posts and respond to them.Great fun!

But it’s not a toy. It’s a workingtool where members can informtheir PAIMA colleagues about realtime issues in their countries andask for advice if they need it.The initiative came from aquestionnaire sent out by theoffice recently. “Members said

that they wanted a platformwhere they could promote theirown company and explain thevalue-add that they can provide,”said Antoino Tremols, PAIMAExecutive Director. “After lookingat a variety of communicationplatforms, this one seemed to fitthe bill.” Each company cannominate one key decision makerand up to five additionalemployees to have access to theplatform. “I would particularly liketo attract contributions fromsome of our younger members. Iwould really like them to sharetheir opinions.”

Antonio is expecting members topost information and interestingarticles. He will also use theplatform in the same way. “So farthe feedback has been verypositive,” he said. This is notintended as a replacement forgetting together face-to-face.Nothing could do that. Nor is itjust something for while we arehampered by travel restrictions.This is another example ofsomething instigated during thecrisis but that will persist longafter. It will help members tokeep in touch and become avaluable educational and businesstool unique to PAIMA.

Meet Tamara Matheson,(pictured above), TippetRichardson’s professional vanforeperson driving with LewisAbbeywood Moving & Storage,which is a sister company withTippet Richardson in Toronto.She has recently won theNorth American Van Lines(NAVL) 3rd place customerservice quality award for 2020on her well-deserved work.

The life of long-distance moveris a difficult job, requiring longhours, lots of overnight travel, atremendous amount of physicaleffort and great customerservice skills. Even with thesechallenges, the industry hasopened its doors to women,who are breaking down thebarriers to take an importantrole in this professional lifestyle.

at Tippet Richardson fulfilled acrucial role in what she hasstrived to become.

“When I was young, I used tospend a lot of time on the roadwith my father. He could seehow much I enjoyed seeing theworld and encouraged me totry to do it for a living,” Tamarasaid.

Tamara joined TippetRichardson with local movingexperience in 2020. When Kurtis,TR’s operation dispatcher,noticed how passionate andexcited she was about workingin the industry, he suggestedthat Tippet Richardson supporther with mentoring andtraining to achieve her goal ofbecoming a long-distancedriver.

Tamara’s first trip to the EastCoast was with one of TippetRichardson’s most experienceddrivers where she wasremarkable in her new role.Today, Tamara is one of the bestoperators in North AmericanVan Lines (NAVL) where she willhandle any move withexceptional customer serviceskills and always with a smile.Tamara enjoys following herpassion on the road. She quicklyrealized the level ofresponsibility and challengesthat goes with being a long-distance driver.

Tamara finds the mostrewarding part of it, is seeing asatisfied customer at the end ofa successful move. Plus beingable to enjoy the scenery of theopen road.

Barbara Overbay promoted at AiresTamara takes third in NAVL awardsAires has announced thepromotion of Barbara ZuendtOverbay (pictured right), tothe role of vice president,operations. In this new role,Barbara will oversee Aires’Operations teams globally. Shecurrently manages Aires’Northeast Region teams; thispromotion will increase herresponsibility to include all USoffices as well as thecompany’s operations in theEMEA and APAC regions.

Aires President Jeff Wangler said,“In 2009, Barbara joined Aires as aregional operations manager,bringing with her decades ofvaluable industry experience. Inher time with Aires, she hasbeen integral in developing andmanaging service delivery forthe Northeast region. We areexcited to broaden her scope ofresponsibilities globally in thevice president of operations roleas she continues to focus onproviding a world-class

experience for our clients andtheir employees.”

Barbara holds the CertifiedRelocation Professional (CRP)and Global Mobility Specialist(GMS) designations from theWorldwide ERC®, and she holdsa bachelor’s degree from KeeneState College.

PMR welcomes new director of logisticsand supply chain Sumit BawaIndian moving and relocationcompany, PM Relocations(PMR), has appointed SumitBawa (pictured right) asdirector of logistics & supplychain.

Sumit has been instrumental inscaling-up several start-ups andtransport firms in India and has

over 10 years’ experience ofbusiness development, strategicaccount management andbolstering business growth inthe logistics and transportationsector. He is also an ardent petlover and football fanatic and hishumor and people skills are anadditional asset for the

company, especially during theCOVID era when nurturingindividuals and teams is a crucialconcern.

Sumit will be spearheading thecompany’s supply chain andaims to scale-up the pet moving,hospitality and other verticalmarkets for PMR. PMR’s CEOAakanksha Bhargava said, “Sumithas always been our biggestcheerleader and having seen thecompany grow all these years,his passion and love for thebrand is unmatchable!

Naresuan University is agovernment university inPhitsanulok Province,northern Thailand. It wasestablished as a separateuniversity on 29 July, 1990, the400th anniversary of the startof the reign of Phitsanulok-born King Naresuan the Great.There are ongoing efforts bythe Thailand Convention andExhibition Bureau (TCEB) toturn Phitsanulok Province intoa MICE (Meetings, Incentives,

Conferencing and Exhibitions)city, and using business eventsas a way to stimulateeconomic growth and betterthe region’s wealthdistribution.

Tiddy S Teerawit, ExecutiveDirector of BOONMA MICELogistics, was invited to coachat the ‘Coach the CoachesProgram for MICE Industry’ onthe topic of ‘Transport andBonded Warehouse

Management’. There were 42people from NaresuanUniversity, trade associations,corporations, etc. participatingin the coaching programthrough a virtual platformduring February 15 - March 20,2021. "This move will alsoincrease investment activitiesand distribution of wealthacross Thailand’s eight lowernorthern provinces," said Tiddy.

Tiddy has also been appointedas the secretary general for TEA(Thai Exhibition Association).TEA is the association of

exhibition-related business ofexhibition organizers, exhibitioncenters, exhibition standcontractors, freight forwardersand related suppliers dedicatedto the promotion anddevelopment of exhibitions inThailand. "This will be mysecond term of servicing theMICE industry, the Association,members and other industrystakeholders,” said Tiddy. “It's avery special privilege to developand promote Thailand's MICEindustry globally."

PAIMA member Boonma, andinternational school BrightonCollege Bangkok (picturedabove), have entered into adefinitive Memorandum ofUnderstanding (MOU). Bothparties have agreed to providehassle-free one-stop assistanceto expatriate parents andteachers when they takeinternational assignments inthe Bangkok region.

Brighton College Bangkokopened in September 2016 and isthe sister school to BrightonCollege UK - England's School ofthe Decade - as chosen by TheSunday Times.

The school offers academicexcellence with ‘a unique cultureof curiosity, confidence andkindness’. The college provideseducation for boys and girls

aged 2-18 years and is dividedinto three schools located onthe same campus: a PreparatorySchool for children aged 2-11years; a Senior School; and aSixth Form for pupils aged 16-18studying ‘A’ Levels.

PMR in India honored 19 of itslongest serving employeesthis year as the companycelebrates its 35 years inbusiness.

In a recent press release aspokesman for the companysaid that employees are thebiggest and most valued assetsof any organization, especiallythose who have been with thebusiness for a long time. “Long-tenured employees possessvaluable skills, work experienceand problem-solvingperspectives that are hard toreplace,” said the spokesman.“We feel proud that we havesuch employees who havebeen associated with thecompany for so long, stoodshoulder to shoulder in tough

times and rejoiced when weachieved certain milestones.”

This year, 19 of PMR’s staffcelebrated 10 and 15 years withthe company. “We are superproud and humbled by theirdedication, hard work andcommitment for our company.The star employees have givenmore than a decade of theirlives and have beeninstrumental in our growth.They have not only believed inthe vision of the company butalso stood strong throughthick and thin for all theseyears,” said the spokesman.

The long-serving staff wereacknowledged at an eventearlier this year to celebratethe company’s birthday.

were imposed, Gou Group never slowed itsengines down, much less regarding socialresponsibility. As well as continuing tooperate in its moving work, the companyrecently managed to successfully concludethe campaign ‘From my table with Gou toyours’ (De mi mesa con Gou a su mesa); thesecond stage is now in preparation.

This campaign was in coordination withHouse of Friendship (Casa de la Amistad), afoundation that tries to help childrendealing with cancer by collecting sealed andnon-perishable food. The Gou Group hasworked on the project for six months.

Gou made its suppliers and clients aware ofthe campaign and so was able to collectboxes with non-perishable food. Thecampaign slogan was: Full boxes, happyhearts.

Gou Group served as theintermediary to send food fromaround Mexico to the organization;hence the campaign name ‘Frommy table with Gou to yours’.

The project helped Gou to obtainthe Corporate Social Responsibilityemblem (CSR), and the Gou teamalways strives to meet therequirements of this certification.With Patrick Ohara on the team, who hasexperience promoting these type ofinitiatives, Gou seized the opportunity tobecome a socially responsible company, asit has always aimed to be.

Gou Group also maintains a collaborativesynergy with Banco de Tapitas, anorganization that supports children withcancer and their families, by collecting andrecycling polypropylene caps to generateresources.

Along with Banco de Tapitas, Gou Groupserves as a collection center for thepolypropylene caps, transporting them allover Mexico.

t was on 3 June that PAIMA organized its members’ Zoommeeting. So that everyone had a good chance of participating

during reasonably sensible working hours, PAIMA chose threeseparate start times, first at 9:00am EDT, then repeated at 2:00pmand again at 8:00pm.

We have all missed getting together over the last 18 months so thiswas a good opportunity for a general chat about the things that werecausing concern. Tony Tremols, PAIMA Executive Director and LarsLemche, PAIMA President, presided over all the meetings. It was a longday for them, but worth it as they saw the members relax together toshare thoughts and ideas.

In each session the members were all given the time to talk about thesituation in their countries and to voice any anxieties they had. Tonycalled it a ‘Wellness Check’. When we meet we all say ‘How are you?’,but don’t really expect an in-depth answer. In this case members weregiven the opportunity to explain how the recent past has worked outfor them, the current situation and their hopes for the future. In eachcase this took up most of the meeting, but it was worth it as peopleclearly warmed to being able to talk freely and to having the soundingboard of the rest of the membership to support them.

Topics discussed included the progress of the pandemic ineach country and the extent of the respective vaccinationprograms; the challenges posed by increasing freight ratesand delays for shipping; discussions about the viability of the

PAIMA convention (which has subsequently been cancelled); and thehigh levels of domestic moving being experienced in many countries.

Lars Lemche took the opportunity, once again, to encourage membersto report their tonnage through the PAIMA system as this helps theoffice to manage and understand the success of the program andhelps participant members to secure reciprocal business from othermembers looking for destination agents. Tony also asked for feedbackon the new-look PAIMA Report that had a facelift in the April 2021 issue:everyone who offered an opinion liked it and agreed that the designwas much cleaner and more up-to-date.

It is very difficult to estimate the value of online meetings such as this.It is clear, however, that face-to-face meetings will remain difficult forsome time yet so every effort must be made to provide networkingand learning opportunities for the membership as long as the currentsituation persists. In this respect the June meeting played animportant part in keeping everyone in touch and in providing a muchneeded appreciation of global issues in the industry.

oday, the terms Diversity, Inclusionand Equality (or DIE) are becoming

synonymous with a happy and balancedwork environment. Since the pandemic,incorporating DIE has become an incrediblysignificant aspect to ensure that today’staskforce is not left hanging amidst chaos.DIE forms a key triangle to encourageworkplaces to implement a holistic workenvironment and bolster growth.

Workplaces today need to create anenvironment that helps improve productivity,creativity and boost innovation. ‘Diversity’ canbe seen as a culture that respects uniquenessin all respects, starting from acknowledgingpeople from different backgrounds, cultures,genders, races and perhaps also age. Thesecond arm of the triangle, ‘Inclusion’,

reflects on organizations inviting diversegroups to position themselves and spearheadthe company’s journey. However, ‘Equality’establishes itself as a critical piece of thetriangle. It implies that each individual is givenequal opportunity to feel accepted for whothey are and are given equal opportunity tothrive in any company’s work environment.

Business leaders believe that DIE bringstogether a pool of talents that thrive withideas and diverse skill sets to encourageproductivity and innovation in a team.

However, under the flashy exteriors ofpositioning oneself as a diverse organization,lays an epidemic of misinformed leaders withpoorly formulated DIE strategies which failmiserably, adding up to the overall mismatchof talent pool globally. It is time thatcorporates around the world use their

Panama Canal allowseven bigger ships topass

he Panama Canal has increased themaximum allowable length (LOA) for

vessels transiting the Neopanamax Locks.From May 2021, the LOA for commercialand non-commercial vessels acceptable forregular transits of the Neopanamax Locksincreased from 367.28 meters to 370.33meters.

The maximum permitted draft has also beenincreased from 14.93 meters to 15.24 meters.

These seemingly modest increases mean that96.8% of the world’s fleet of containershipscan now transit the Panama Canal,shortening routes and benefiting economiesaround the world.

Panama Canal Administrator RicaurteVásquez Morales said the change was madepossible by his team’s experience operatingthe Neopanamax Locks safely and reliablyover the past five years.

The short-cut provided by the Canal reducesvessels’ fuel consumption and thereforeemissions, having a positive impact on thereduction of global greenhouse gasescompared to other routes.

The extended LOA will provide shipping lineswith greater flexibility in making decisions forthe deployment and construction of vesselswith greater capacity that can transitthrough the Panama Canal.

hat a difference a year makes. After theupheaval that came in 2020, here’s a look

at the relocation market as it stands in 2021, as wellas a glimpse at what might lie ahead.

The insurance market nowRates are up. According to MarketScout’s MarketBarometer, property and casualty rates were up 7% inthe first quarter of 2021. This is a continuation ofupward trend that has been impacting insurance ratesfor some time now. In addition to higher rates, we arealso seeing tighter underwriting and reduced capacity.

Some accounts are seeing even higher rate increases –sometimes much higher – based on the line ofcoverage, various risk factors and the policyholder’sloss history. Rate hikes can’t always be avoided, butsometimes they can be mitigated.

For example, we recently had one account whoserates increased by 150%. We were able to work withthe carrier to provide a ‘surgical’ increase by analyzingmoves based on declared value and deductibles toevaluate the categories with higher losses and poorloss ratios. This allowed us to apply the increase onlyto certain segments of their business, saving themmoney compared to the across-the-board increasethat would have occurred otherwise.

COVID-19COVID-19 spread across the globe in 2020 andmay continue to be a factor for some time.COVID is not the first pandemic and it won’tbe the last. The modern world is moreconnected than ever. Although this offersmany advantages, it also makes it easier forviruses to spread. COVID has shown us howfragile many of our systems are and thatwork is needed to increase businessresilience.

High cargo demandAlthough COVID-19 has put the brakes on theglobal tourism market, demand for cargoremains strong.

According to Property Casualty 360, demandfor cargo and space on ships reached historiclevels in 2020. Bloomberg says that March isnormally a slow month for containervolumes, but March 2021 has seen continuedship congestion. Key ports on the West Coastof the United States have been experiencingbottlenecks since November and the averagewait for berth space has been eight days.

A lack of space at ports isn’t the onlyproblem. There’s also a global

container shortage andFreightWaves, a leadingcompany in data and analyticsfor the global logisiticsmarket, says it will likelycontinue until 2022. Thisshortage has added to thecosts and complexities ofthe current relocationmarket.

Massive cargo shipsMega containerships are helping to meetsome demand for cargo, but they are notwithout risks. In March, a mega containershipbecame lodged in the Suez Canal, blockingtraffic for nearly a week. Originally, the SuezCanal Authority made a claim for $916 millionover the incident, but Reuters says the claimhas since been reduced to around $600million.

The Suez Canal gained national mediaattention, but it is not the only incident toinvolve mega containerships in recent years.According to NPR (National Public Radio),strong winds can cause stacks of cargo to falloverboard. In one such incident, a ship lostmore than 1,800 containers.

In the aftermath of the Suez Canal blockages,some people are questioning whether thepassageway should be widened or alternativeroutes should be used. One thing is clear, therise of mega containerships is creating newrisks for the relocation and shippingindustries.

Natural disastersThe 2020 Atlantic hurricane season wasespecially active. There were 30 namedstorms – a record-breaking number – and 13of these storms became hurricanes.

Many people point to climate change as alikely culprit, since rising ocean temperaturescould make storms more powerful. 2020broke records, but even worse years may stilllie ahead. This is something that therelocation industry will have to grapple within the years to come.

TechnologyWhile evolving risks and rising costs threatenthe shipping industry, new technology mayhold solutions. Artificial intelligence and theInternet of Things have been providing newways to manage risks. These technologiesalso hold promise for the marine cargoindustry.

New technology can be applied at differentstages throughout the insurance process.With data analytics, we may be able to predictand calculate risks more accurately and, insome cases, help prevent claims. When claimsoccur, technology can help speed up theprocess. Although adoption of technologyhas been slower compared with certainindustries, it seems that many people in themarine cargo industry are warming up to theidea of modern technology.

Planning for tomorrow and beyondBack in 2019, no one knew that the COVID-19pandemic would change everything in 2020.Now, in 2021, we cannot say for sure what thefuture will bring. However, we can see thatchanges in demand and risks are having amajor impact on the relocation industry.

At the same time, rates are impacting costs.Although some rate hikes might beunavoidable right now, you may be able totake control of some aspects, if you have aprovider by your side who helps youunderstand and proactively manage yourexposures.

Burke Bros was originally formed in 1982 bybrothers Gary and Chris Burke (picturedabove, left to right) with less than £1,000. Ithas now become a major, privately ownedinternational moving organization. Burke

Bros subsequently purchased threeleading removal companies, who weremembers of BAR (The British Associationof Removers) and had been established in1844, 1898 and 1926 respectively, in a two-year period between 1992 and 1994 inBirmingham, Coventry and Rugby to formthe Burke Bros Moving Group.

Burke Bros is now well-known around theworld as one of the UK’s leadinginternational moving organizations with UKdomestic and overseas removal services,along with commercial office moving andstorage facilities.

Burke Bros joined PAIMA in the 1990s. “Itwas Joseph Pauley and Mauricio Ortiz whowere the original inspiration for us joiningPAIMA in 2001,” said Gary. “20 years on,we’ve never looked back.

We have always been committed tosupporting PAIMA and have built solidbusiness relationships and firm friendshipsalong the way. Gary also reflected on some ofthe key events for Burke Bros asPAIMA members. “In 2006 wewere gold sponsors and JuanPeralta award winners in SanFrancisco,” he explained. “ChrisBurke presented to the assemblyon our environmental project. Itwas a sad day as our father diedat the same time we werepicking up the award. This wasthe year Abdel Cohn retired asgeneral manager of PAIMA.”Burke Bros won theenvironmental award again 10years later in 2016.

utch-based mover UniMovehas joined the PAIMA

network. UniMove was founded byMichel Paijens and Raymond vanDijk who met while working fortheir previous employer. The pair,keen on doing things their ownway and not being bound byothers, made the brave decision toleave and start their own movingcompany in 2007.

Starting a new moving businessduring a global financial crisis madethe task even more challenging. Buthaving been in the industry for aslong as they can remember, andknowing the Dutch moving marketvery well, they made it a success.Michel and Raymond soon realizedthat it was imperative to have theirown storage facility, vehicles andcrews, and to that end purchased awell-known local moving company,Jac den Hollander, in 2010. Sincethen, the company has continued toexpand and now has a new office

hat are the main factors that areholding back moving companiestoday?

Cash flow, or lack thereof, is a key factor thatsets movers apart from one another. Eventhough the world is still moving (despite thepandemic), it is hard to plan, especially forfuture investment. Movers with a financialbuffer can take risks and invest to evolvetheir businesses, temporarily to adapt to thepandemic, and for the next generation ofconsumers. Movers without the cash are leftclinging to old processes, limited technology,and a declining client pool.

Inefficiency is a huge factor that we need totackle as an industry: the same or less input;greater output. An example of efficiency thathas been embraced by many movers recentlyis the digital survey, instead of a physicalhome survey. A digital survey usually takesunder an hour, does not require a vehicle or adriver on the road, it can be done fromanywhere around the world and thesupporting technology registers the input inreal-time. Sending a quote at the end is thenonly a click away. These advantages oftenoutweigh less personal contact when you canmake a more sustainable margin. Beingcritical on your efficiency is almostguaranteed to increase your margin, but as aresult, will also mean changing many of yourinternal processes.

In what ways have customers changed andhow will they continue to change in thefuture?

Millennials have entered the housing market.They bring with them new expectations, newways and new technology. A classic exampleof this, which we can see from our ownstatistics, is the use of mobile phones

compared to desktop computers. We see alarge increase of website users (not justmillennials) that do a quote request from amobile phone and not their desktopcomputer. Hence, we cannot say it enough -make sure your website and quote form arecompatible, optimized, and easy to use froma mobile phone.

The second major thing that stands out tome is how customers perceive a move. Inmost cases, it is simply a commodity in theireyes. With the Internet driving the way wedo business, from a customer perspective, amove is just like any other online service, likebooking an overseas holiday or shoppingonline to furnish their new home. Now, I hearyou saying, “moving isn’t a commodity”, andperhaps you are right. However, thecustomer does not know (and dare I say, doesnot care) about all the intricate complexitiescustoms impinges on movers, nor the factthat multiple parties will have to handle theirpersonal effects as they travel around theworld. In their opinion, every other servicecan be done through an app and at the clickof a button, so why not a move? We call thisthe ‘Amazon effect’: order today, receive ittomorrow. And they expect their move towork in the same way. The absence of instantpricing emphasises this divide betweencustomers and movers. The moving industryis one of the only industries that still doesnot provide an instant price which, in myopinion, is the way forward.

In what ways do you feel movers need tochange the way they think to be able toflourish?

Be agile. It is a buzz word for a reason. It is amindset whereby nothing is ‘fixed’. It ensuresthat you operate based on the concept ofadding value to your business, receiving data

feedback, and then adjusting in smallincrements to keep increasing that value.When you combine an agile attitude withyour core competencies, you can constantlyevolve without feeling as if you mustrevolutionize your business suddenly tosurvive.

Easier said than done, I know. Take building anew website for example. The non-agile waywould be to define your goal, let’s say, toattract 100,000 visitors by the end of the year.Your designer quotes €30,000 for the job andsays it will be ready to launch after threemonths. In this way, your website would haveadded no value to your business whilst it wasbeing built, plus it would be built in itsentirety, based on your original idea withoutfeedback to learn what customers reallywant.

The agile approach would be to only build thehome page and contact form, then go liveafter the first month, without any otherpages. Sounds crazy right? From doing this,you can already get a couple of bookings, youalso get data feedback that some of yourproducts attract much more business thanothers. So, before building the other pages,you tweak the home page to show off themost attractive products, and now you havefeedback on which pages to build next.

Agile is a scary place to work in because youcannot rely on what you know, but rather, onwhat you do not know. Often it feels likenothing is finished, and that you areconstantly double-checking yourself as towhether it is the right way to go. Doubtsaside, agile keeps us sharp and able torespond to changing environments, which iscertainly what the moving industry couldbenefit from right now.

What will be the consequences if they failto do so?

Moving companies are being forced toquestion their identity and face the fact thatthe industry is becoming fragmented. In myopinion, this fragmentation is a result ofinefficiency. Pieces of the sales pipeline willkeep disappearing and going to companiesthat are more agile and more efficient. Wealready see this in areas such as reservations,surveying, online marketing, admin andwarehousing. Movers will need to adapt tothis.

My advice is to focus on what you are good atand make the most margin in that area, thenproactively seek out other companies thatare stronger in those other competencyareas. This way, you still have control overyour core business and can collaborate withtrusted partners. If you can still provide aservice you believe in, then you are still ableto sustainably contribute and benefit fromour industry. A much better outcome thangoing bust.

In what ways do you think the industry willbe different in five years?

I foresee the moving industry becoming a lotlike the travel industry, with four mainsuppliers: RMCs, consolidated movinggroups, platforms and niche operators. Majormoving groups will get stronger and rely onthe strength of their members and theirindividual brands to generate business. RMCswill continue to thrive, mainly because theydo business from a consumer point of viewby overseeing the whole customer journeywith the support of the latest technology.Some high-end, niche operators will operateindependently, but with a much moreconcentrated part of the market such as pets,art and high-end moves. The rest will besupplied by platforms who offer quick andtransparent information for customerssearching for a commodity that suits theirneeds and matched with an array of moverswho best fit the job.

What are the key threats and opportunitiesfor moving companies?

It depends on what you see as a threat. Ithink the divide between the initial phases ofthe ‘customer journey’ and the actual‘physical move’ is going to increase. RMCshave already shown us that this is possible. Ithink that platforms are a likely contender totake over the ‘contact’ part of the customerjourney, as they offer what consumers want(such as an instant price) and are notpreoccupied with the challenges that movers

face. Platforms and technology companiesfocus on what is not working (i.e.inefficiencies), rather than what is going well,and build technology to fill these gaps. If weconsider the likes of Uber or Amazon, theyalso come with considerable financial backingto see it through. This could be a threat formovers, but also an opportunity to adapt andreally focus on what they are specialized in:moving. People will always move, so thepivotal question is: how much of the supplychain do you want to directly control andhow much will it cost your margin to do so?

From where do you believe the next waveof disruption for the moving industry islikely to come?

Disruption is what our industry needs tosurvive and is often seen as a negative word,but I see it as a ‘necessary discomfort’. We atTriGlobal are often labeled as a ‘disruptor’ andit has taken me a while to be proud of that. Infact, I do not think we really disrupt enoughfor the industry to evolve fast enough with

what consumers are expecting. Without adoubt, instant pricing will be a ‘disruption’ tomoving companies and merely fill a necessaryvoid for tomorrow’s customer.

What are the key things that TriGlobal isworking on now to enhance its service?

Recently, we launched a conversion toolbox.It helps movers convert more clients byimproving design elements on their ownwebsites. Currently, three tools are available,which include a volume calculator, a priceestimator and a contact form. All of themhelp to increase website conversion rates. Weuse the same tools on our own websites,which are the result of over 15 years of dataanalysis as to how customers behave online.For a monthly fee, you get the most up todate versions, supported by live statistics andfeedback from our team of online marketingexperts.

We are also focused on increasing the volumeaccuracy and information captured in theleads. The better the accuracy, the easier andquicker movers can quote. The emphasiscomes from the divide we see betweenconsumer expectations and moverdeliverables, notably the speed of a quote. Ifwe can simplify and speed up the quotingprocess, consumers get better and quickerinformation, which ultimately increases thechances of them booking a move with thatmoving company.

Shippingin crisis

e are all familiar with many ofthe consequences of the COVID

pandemic. However, one that perhapswas not foreseen, is the current shippingcrisis that has caused vessels to bedelayed, ports to be congested andshipping rates to multiply to previouslyunseen levels. Operationally this causessevere headaches, especially during thepeak season. But the knock-on effects forcustomers are equally significant anddisruptive.

The moving industry has traditionally beendriven by customer needs: what thecustomer wants, the customer gets. Butright now, that’s just not possible. Movingcompanies need to manage theircustomers’ expectations.

The problem has been caused largely byCOVID. When the outbreak hit, many vessels

were initially laid up. Then the worldstarted buying online, very successfully, andthe demand from consumer nations,especially the USA and Europe, rocketed.Shipping lines were unable to keep up. Addto this staff shortages helping to increasedelays at ports, and we have the perfectstorm.

The result, as well as lengthening delays, isthe simple consequence of an imbalance ofsupply and demand. From a shippingperspective, it’s a seller’s market, so pricesrise. “We have witnessed truly astronomicalincreases, due to a very complexcombination of factors – from the waycoronavirus has both disrupted supply anddriven demand, through to unforeseenevents, such as the blockage of the SuezCanal,” explained Patrik Berglund, CEO ofXeneta, the global benchmarking andmarket intelligence platform forcontainerized ocean freight. “And all thetime the carriers have managed routes andcapacity to maintain a position ofunparalleled strength in negotiations. It is,without doubt, a difficult time to be ashipper.”

Harm Meierdirks (pictured left), ManagingDirector of freight forwarder Carl Hartmann,said his company is working hard to serveits clients. “With every sailing we get 10 or15 notifications from the shipping lines thatthe sailing dates have changed,”

he explained. “So the pick-up date for thecontainer changes as well, and we have tostart from scratch to reorganize everythingevery time there is a change.” The problemis particularly difficult for FCL consignmentsloaded at residence. It’s clear that moversneed to make it clear to their customersthat they need to be flexible.

Vessels on some routes are fully booked forup to 12 weeks in advance. Once at sea,each vessel can be delayed again by up to 10days because of port congestion. “Theproblem is particularly bad into Canada andthe USA,” said Harm. “The best advice is tobook early if possible and talk to customersso that they understand that delays arelikely.”

When it comes to pricing, Harm says there isnothing that can be done. “If you wantspace, you have to pay,” he said. “I suggestthat companies show an open book so thatcustomers know exactly what freight coststhey are having to pay. It’s not so bad forsome corporate clients as they have thesame problem shipping their owncommercial goods, but for privatecustomers it’s much more difficult for themto understand. I give a huge warning foranyone signing long-term contracts rightnow.”

To put some scale on this Harm said thatrates from Europe to the Americancontinent have increased dramaticallyfrom January until now. For example, 40ftmarket rates to New York have increasedfrom $1,925 to $6,700; to Montreal from$2,100 to $8,150; and to Veracruz from$,1750 to $7,000. At the same time, thevessels are booked 8-10 weeks in advanceand rates and surcharges are increasingevery month. Ports at origin anddestination are full, with vesselsexperiencing huge delays of up to 15 days.Per diem charges can reach up to$1,000/container. The situation from Asiato the USA is similar.

There are similar situations on otherroutings. Asia to Europe has 40ft rates ofup to $15,000 with waiting times of up to14 weeks. There’s high demand for Europeto Asia too but the wait is only 2-4 weeks.Europe to Oceana is being affected bycongestion in the Asian transhipment

ports with waiting time of up to 8 weeksand some companies having stoppedshipping to New Zealand completely.

In most cases Harm does not see theposition easing until at least the firstquarter of 2022. So, currently rates are stillincreasing, delays are extending andcongestion is still widespread. There willcome a time, when demand increases orsupply expands to meet it, then normalmarket forces will return and prices will falland stabilize. Until then there is nothingfor it but to inform customers of the needto remain flexible and ensure that freightcosts can always be passed on.

Headingfor HawaiiSteve Jordan talks to Jeff Nadeau(pictured right), General Manager, DewittMove Worldwide in San Diego about thecompany, his membership of PAIMAand what keeps him awake at night.

spoke to Jeff while he, and the rest ofthe world of course, was wrestling

with capacity issues that were causingdelays at ports, shortages of lift vans, andthe necessity to turn away more work thanever in the past. “We are not used to sayingno,” he said. “It’s very tough. It’s been crazy,but we are still having a great year. We’llget through it. This too shall pass.”

Dewitt Move Worldwide, Jeff tells me, is afourth-generation company in the movingbusiness for nearly 100 years that operatesthrough various divisions. Jeff is specificallyresponsible for the movement of householdgoods between the US mainland and Alaska,Hawaii and Guam. The work is split 50/50 byprivate work that comes from web leads, andcorporate work though van lines andRelocation Management Companies.The company also owns Royal Alaskan Movers,Dewitt Guam and Royal Hawaiian Movers,which Jeff believes to be one of the largestmoving companies in Hawaii. “We don’t haveany trucks or crews on the mainland becausewe don’t want to compete with other moversbecause they hire us to get stuff from Alaska,Hawaii and Guam,” he explained. These samemovers act as origin and destination agentsfor Dewitt throughout the country.

I wondered what it was that made Dewittspecial? Jeff said that he had never worked fora better company that treats their employeesso well and provides excellent service at a fairprice. “If any issues arise or disputes withclients or customers, we resolve themamicably and as quickly as possible,” he said.“We care about our reputation very much.Just doing it the right way and sleeping wellat night. We work hard to communicatequickly and effectively and want to be knownfor being the experts in our area of coverage.This includes ensuring we process and payour vendors promptly or address any issueswith bills immediately.

We all have a lot to do and we feel it is vital tokeep our work flow current and addressany issues quickly before they becomea burden on our company or our partners.”

Although Dewitt is based in San Diego, Jeffhandles moves to and from his threedestinations from all over the USA. “We packand load into lift vans or container at origin.The shipment then gets trucked to the WestCoast and loaded at Oakland, Seattle and LongBeach.” At destination the consignments arehandled by the relevant group company.Dewitt also accepts moves from other partsof the world, bound for these destinations.It seemed to me that Jeff’s division was veryself-contained. So, I wondered why he wassuch a supporter of PAIMA? “I think PAIMA is agreat organization. I was broken-heartedwhen I heard that the convention had beencancelled,” he said. “Two years ago I was sosick of conventions and hoped I would neverhave to go again. Now I can’t wait for one.”We should all be careful what we wish for.

“This industry is so relationship driven,”said Jeff. “I know owners of movingcompanies in most US cities that Ican call to get things done. Whenproblems arise in this business it’sabout how quickly and ethically you resolvethem.”

It’s part of the company’s core values tosupport the industry. It’s not just for altruisticreasons, it’s practical.“You either pay formembership or you pay attorneys, becausethere is so much learning that comes fromthe associations,” he said.

I wondered, with 35 years in the bank with theindustry, what keeps Jeff awake at night? “It’sthe potential for disruption from an Amazonor Uber-style company,” he said. “You’d beamazed how many people, who are moving toHawaii, expect to be able to get movers atshort notice. Society wants everything now.That will impact the industry, sooner or later.”

He is also concerned about technology. He acknowledges thatit’s expensive and challenging but that it’s essential to haveadequate systems and, especially, be up on your IT security.With the rapid changes in technology, it is a challenge to stayon top of it and ensure when you are adding a new softwareor technology that it will work properly and is well vetted. “Itcan be scary to look at some of the more expensive newtechnologies that are becoming available and wonder howlong it will be in use before something better arrives that wemay need to add to our systems.”

When dealing with trade customers, that’s where therelationship kicks in. “I worked hard to get the new customersin the door and I work with them directly to ensure they paytheir bills on time as agreed to when we first start ourrelationship,” said Jeff. “We enjoy working with companiesthat work the same way we do to resolve any issues promptlyand make their payments promptly as agreed to. I don’t wantaccounting to get involved. It’s hard to get an account andeasy to lose one if you don’t handle them right.”

I wondered if Jeff had any advice for the younger generationthat’s following him? “You have to embrace change,” he said.“The world is changing so fast you need to get on the magiccarpet and ride it or you’ll be left at the bottom of the heap.”Jeff also advises youngsters to focus on education, learningabout the business, what’s going on in the industry and thecultures of other countries.

Jeff has one guilty pleasure. “Every year I go on tour withThe Grateful Dead. I see 15-20 concerts a year.” Well, whowould have thought!
