Sep 5 — Sep 19th, 2014 Schedule

September 5, 2014 In July (Im Juli) (2000,Germany, directed by Fatih Akin, 99 min.) A charming romantic comedy and road movie. Daniel, a shy and naïve science teacher (Moritz Bleibtreu), has no plans for his summer vaca-tion while his students simply walk out to get started on theirs. Juli, a neighbor and vendor (Christiane Paul) sells him a Mayan ring guaran-teed to help him find his love when he meets the girl with a matching one (she has it and hopes in this way to get acquainted with him. At a party to which she invites him he meets a Turkish girl, Melek (Idil Üner) wearing a shirt with a sun. They spend the night together and he takes her to catch her plane to Istanbul. The road trip starts with his obsession to drive to Istanbul to meet her there. Juli wants to catch a ride to anywhere and Daniel is the first car that stops. Many unex-pected things happen on the way to Turkey, including significant en-counters with Isa (Mehmet Kurtulus) and Luna (Branka Katic). (#364) September 19, 2014 Jane Eyre (1996, France/Italy/UK/USA, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, 112 min.) Based on Charlotte Brontë’s 1847 novel and drawing heavily on the author’s own life experiences and independent thinking uncommon at the time. Jane, played as a child by Anna Paquin and as an adult by Charlotte Gainsbourg, spends her childhood as an unwanted orphan in her aunt’s home and then at a strict charity boarding school. As a young woman she is hired as a governess to Adèle (Josephine Serre), the ward of Edward Rochester (William Hurt), the master of Thornfield Hall, a forbidding, enigmatic place where many mysteries remain unex-plained. The friendliest person in the household is Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper (Joan Plowright), who offers Jane guidance when need-ed. Jane and Rochester are drawn to each other and eventually realize they are deeply in love, but obstacles to their romance take many years to overcome. (#365)

T hanks to a generous grant from Target, International House Davis has been able to offer storytelling programs monthly year-round except for December.

Coming up next will be returning favorite Vicki Crescitelli present-ing "Tales From Around the World" on Sunday, Aug. 17. Crescitelli, a creator and teller of tales for more than 15 years, will be returning to the International House in August to tell stories and teach songs from all over the globe. She specializes in animal stories, particularly stories in which animals play tricks on humans. She promises to have children clapping, sing-ing and laughing and, in do-ing so, affect the outcome of the stories. Children will have an opportunity to play with a variety of props and musical instruments that she has col-lected in her travels around the world and each partici-pant will be given a simple musical instrument and a magic stone to take home at the conclusion of the performance. Storytelling performances take place once on month on a Sunday afternoon from 2 to 3 p.m. On Sept. 21, Angela James of Sacramento will perform stories and play music with a multicultural bent. She is a member of Sacramento's Fenix Drum and Dance Company, a West African and Afro-Caribbean performing troupe. She weaves stories and songs together to make an exciting and interactive expe-rience for all ages. Drawing on her family background of storytell-ers from the Caribbean, she connects with her audience on several levels by using age-old oral traditions. She regularly performs at libraries, local schools and colleges in Sacramento and the sur-rounding areas. The storytelling programs are free to I-House mem-bers. Others are asked to pay $2 per child or $5 for a family. These programs are especially fun for birthday party outings or family special events.

Storytelling continues to be a draw for kids at I-House on Sundays Around I-House

Angela James gets parents involved in her storytelling, too!

It takes more than a village to keep I-House going! Our new Facilities Committee Chair Mike Brown has worked tireless-ly to plug leaks in our aging irrigation system, trim the bushes and shrubbery, power-wash the house and more. He has been helped by our gardening crew of Rob Ludwig and Paul Moering.

These gentlemen come to I-House every Tuesday morn-ing rain (sometimes) or shine. Paul and Rob also finished an in-ventory of all the lights at I-House and helped the irrigation sys-tem function automatically. We can't thank Mike, Rob, Paul (and their patient wives) enough.

News in Brief I-House welcomes new officers and board members

Michael Brown teaches tai chi at Inter-national House every weekday morn-ing from 7:15 a.m. to about 8:30 a.m. He has been an invaluable member of the gardening crew at I-House and has repaired the irrigation lines, too. He also power-washed the house! A for-mer chemist, he moved to Davis is 1983 and worked as a landscaper at UC Davis. He traveled across Europe in a VW bus in 1989 and also made stops in Greece, Turkey and Istanbul and the coast of Africa. Krystyna von Henneberg first came to I-House as a volunteer French teacher

but soon found other programs and ideas to keep her busy (in addition to

teaching French). She hosted a “Davis Reads” book project on immigration,

an international poetry night, and created a monthly salon for Francophones called

“Café Cesaire.” She is a dual U.S./Italian citizen and is the daughter of a Polish ar-

chitect and an Italian art historian. She is married to a Colombian sociologist and

artist.

“Our art exhibits are one of the most popular ongoing programs at I-House,” said Elisabeth Sherwin, exec-utive director. “Thanks goes to Jeffrey Granett, head of our art committee, and all his hard-working committee members who select the works, hang the exhibits, and make it a successful program for the artist and the public.” Those who would like to submit their artwork to the committee for a possible I-House exhibit should con-tact Granett at [email protected]. Continuing this month in the Com-munity Room at I-House are photo-graphs by collaborators Mary Christo-pher and David Kalb. The two artists never met before deciding to share space at I-House and the result is ser-endipitous. Similar but different each with a way of sharing domestic mo-ments the world over. Continuing in the Lounge for the month of August are photographs by Mayumi Acosta. Mayumi is a Colom-bian-born freelance photographer

based in Davis who started exploring her fascination with photography a few years ago when traveling to extraordi-nary places around the world. The exhibition is titled “Austrian Landscapes: A View from the Heart.” “I share the wonderful experience I had of journeying through different re-gions of Austria during summer and winter. I had the opportunity to travel to this beautiful land with some periodici-ty with my husband and have been al-ways fascinated by its nature and how a scene looks so different at different times of the year or even during the day.” Her photographs include images of well-looked after castles and towns with medieval history surrounded by trees, mountains and natural lakes to swim in. “The skiing options in well-known places around Innsbruck in Tyrol have left lasting memories that I want to share. This is Austria as I see and feel it.”

Photographs, paintings, water colors, collages grace the walls of International House

The new president of I-House, Liz McCapes, is looking forward to a busy year at I-House. “I hope to put to good use all the skills I see in peo-ple around me to further the goals of International House. And we'll have a good time while we do it," she said. McCapes said she will enjoy work-ing with the new vice president, Robert Blake, who is a professor of Spanish at UC Davis. Of particular importance, she added, is the up-coming International Festival which is the major fundraiser of the year. "We are always looking for corporate sponsorships," said McCapes. If you would like your name attached to this great annual event, which celebrates "unity in diversi-ty," please call Elisabeth Sherwin, the executive director, at (530) 753-5007. It will take place this year at Central Park in downtown Davis from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5. "I also want to thank Mary Philip, our past presi-dent, and vice president Hamza el Nakhal and interim vice president Bob Halferty," she added. "They have done a wonderful job promoting I-House in the community and beyond."

Workshop for teachers on Sept. 4 ‘Teachers Also Learn’

A special one-time workshop for teachers will be held at International House on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. It is free and open to the public. "Teachers Also Learn!" will be led by Laura Dubcovsky. "Let's share our experi-ences, teaching moments, anecdotes of our best, worst and in-between student, and discuss what works and what doesn't," she said. This workshop is open to all, not just teachers, who are interested in communication across languages and cultures. Dubcovsky was born and raised in Argentina. In Davis, she taught in several different capacities from home-schooling to schooling farm families in Dixon, from teaching bilingual kindergarten at Cesar Chavez to teaching bilingual teachers at UC Davis. “We have more than 20 volunteer language teachers at International House," said Elisabeth Sherwin, executive director. "We have long wanted to offer this group a workshop of some kind and now Laura has offered to share her talents. So please join us on Sept. 4." Refresh-ments will be served.

(Continued from Page 4) To view more samples of her work go to www.mayumiacosta.com and http://500px.com/MayumiAcosta In September both rooms will show work by Polly Liew. The exhibit is “Lyrics of Color and Light.” Polly Liew studied Chinese brush painting in her earlier years and lately has concentrated on Western watercolor painting. Sometimes she combines both techniques. Polly tries to express her ob-servation, appreciation and imagination of the beauty of nature through vibrant color and rhythm of movement. Her paintings often show peaceful and joyful moods. The reception for Liew will take place on Friday, Sept. 12, at International House from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The recep-tion is free and open to the public. In October and November, the work by Margaret Raftery will be shown in the Community Room. The exhibit, “Collages: Thinking Inside the Box,” will be unveiled at the reception and opening on Friday, Oct. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m.

“The nature of my work is about free association of pictures I find in Life magazine,” Raftery said. “In 2006 I start-ed constructing photo collages from my collection of over 100 copies of Life. In 2013 I started creating shadow boxes.

With photo collages and shadow

boxes I like to gather and construct these photographs into another visual reality. These give the collages a new look and an added dimension. I look for the faces of actors, artists, writers, and little old ladies. I am moved by their facial expressions which transcend time and space,” she

The talk will begin at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served. Christopher was a Fulbright scholar in Egypt and has taken may photographs of Egyptians and their animals. An exhibit of her photo-graphs is now hanging in the Community Room at I-House and will remain in place throughout the month of August. I nternational House Davis will join with friends and family of the late Don Ranstrom to remember him, his life, and his many contri-butions to Davis and beyond. The event will take place

on Saturday, Oct. 18 at International House. As the Lutheran Campus Minister, he was on the original subcommittee planning for an Interna-tional Center as early as 1978, was involved when Mr. Shunta Yama-moto arrived in February of 1979, and was a member of the original steering committee (which later became the first board of direc-tors). He did most of the detail work when I-House was established (with considerable input from Clay Ballard and Mr. Yamamoto, of course), but he was superb at record-keeping and doing the back-

E va Reeves is a third-year student at UC Davis majoring in linguistics and inter-national relations.

She came to I-House look-ing for a volunteer job con-nected to her major: "I love anything I do here at I-House -- the environment is so friendly, I leave feel-ing awesome." She also is teaching English classes at I-House and hopes to go on a study abroad program next summer. You will recognize her by her pink hair!

Spencer Cheung has worked or volunteered at I-House for 1 year and 29 days as of July 29. "I was looking for a place to volunteer and I like the atmosphere here," he said. "People are friendly and help each other out." He graduated from UC Da-vis in June with a degree in managerial economics. As the assis-tant to the office manag-er, Spencer is getting experience working in an office and he is a big help with facility rentals and just about anything that needs to be done at I-House. He has a dry wit: "Future employ-ers need to know I'm competent on a copier," he said. Veronica came to I-House because she wanted to give something back to the I-House and UC Davis community. She was an exchange stu-dent from Italy in 2009. While at UCD she met the man who would become her future husband, Abhi Kulkarni, but years would go by and much red tape would be consumed before they finally got married in January of 2013 at Stonegate Country Club. She has a master's degree in international affairs with a specialty in the politics of environmental sus-tainability.

"He helped set the tone of what I-House would become, and the combination of Don and Clay became the engine responsible for developing the organization," said Judy Wydick, longtime member. "Please join us on Saturday, Oct. 18," said Elisabeth Sherwin, executive direc-tor."All who knew Don or his family or just appreciated his work are most welcome to attend. We will alert everyone when we know the exact time."
