Welcome to Wales! The World's F irst Fair Trade Nation

We are excited to welcome you to the International Fair Trade Towns Conference 2019 in Cardiff, the World's first Fairtrade capital city. This year, our theme is The Future of Fair Trade, where lively panel discussions and engaging workshops will allow you to explore topics such as trade justice, the impact of climate change, how to engage the next generation and much more. We will also be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the FAIRTRADE Mark. This year, we are happy to introduce our Interactive Zone, where you will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of fun activities, shop for Fair Trade goods, watch some short films and listen to a series of mini talks. If you would like to give a mini talk at the conference, just ask a member of the team.

We hope that the conference provides you with the opportunity to learn more about the future of Fair Trade, whilst meeting like minded people from around the world. Finally, we would like to thank all of our sponsors, particularly our strategic partner the Welsh Government, for helping us to make this event possible.

Rydym yn falch iawn o’ch croesawu i Gynhadledd Rhyngwladol Trefi Masnach Deg 2019 yng Nghaerdydd, prifddinas Masnach Deg gyntaf y Byd. Eleni, ein thema yw Dyfodol Masnach Deg, lle bydd trafodaethau bywiog gyda’r panel a gweithdai atyniadol yn eich galluogi i ymchwilio i bynciau fel cyfiawnder masnach, effaith newid yn yr hinsawdd, sut i ymgysylltu â’r genhedlaeth nesaf a llawer mwy. Byddwn yn dathlu 25 mlynedd ers sefydlu’r Marc MASNACH DEG hefyd. Eleni, rydym yn hapus i gyflwyno ein Parth Rhyngweithiol, lle byddwch yn cael cyfle i gymryd rhan mewn amrywiaeth o weithgareddau hwyliog, siopa am nwyddau Masnach Deg, gwylio rhywfaint o ffilmiau byrion a gwrando ar gyfres o sgyrsiau bychain. Os hoffech chi roi sgwrs fach yn y gynhadledd, gofynnwch i aelod o’r tîm.

Rydym yn gobeithio y bydd y gynhadledd yn rhoi’r cyfle i chi ddysgu mwy am ddyfodol Masnach Deg, ac ar yr un pryd, i gyfarfod gyda pobl o’r un meddylfryd o bob rhan o’r byd. Yn olaf, hoffem ddiolch i bob un o’n noddwyr, yn enwedig ein partner strategol, Llywodraeth Cymru, am ein helpu i wneud y digwyddiad hwn yn bosibl.

Fair Trade and

refugees: building

the capacity

Title Description

This workshop aims to provide a platform for the Fair Trade initiatives who are already working with refugees and refugee artisans. Participants will learn about the projects including examples from Mexico, and to develop practical ways to deepen connections with Fair Trade towns and refugee artisans in their area to motivate, inspire and show how Fair Trade is responding to wider issues.

Fair Trade & Living Income

Trade Fair Live Fair: Procure for the Future

This workshop will guide you through a journey to a fair and sustainable nation through procurement. There will be stories from Wales, Germany, Finland, and other European nations, including updates on EU Chapters and how EU trade policy is evolving. You will get practical examples of where policy change is delivering results in different ways, and an opportunity to practice how that learning can be taken back to your own Fair Trade Town and start action. This workshop is funded by the Trade Fair Live Fair Project, an EU initiative.

Fair Trade and Sport

This workshop will show how Fairtrade sports balls have revived Fair Trade towns campaigns in a fun way, through culture, education and procurement. It aims to demonstrate how child labour and a heavily influential industry can be reformed from within. You will gain practical ways to use what you have learnt and be inspired to take them back to your own Fair Trade town, school & community.

Town Linking:

A story of friendship

This workshop will tell a story of solidarity between Wycombe, England and Grecia in Costa Rica as they travel on their journey to linking their towns. This will be an opportunity to share their journey, learn from them and also hear from others who are starting their journey. You will be able to take their story with you, and perhaps inspire you to create your own.

Fair Trade and young people:

Engaging with youth

This workshop will show how young people are engaging with Fair Trade issues.Hear examples from France, Germany and Scotland on the role of Fair Trade schemes in schools and ensuring young people continue to be empowered as they get older to become co-drivers of Fair Trade Towns across the world. Co-delivered by a member of the Fair Trade Young People’s Network Scotland, come along to: discuss ideas & experiences about involving young people in Fair Trade Towns campaigns; hear what may be preventing young people from getting involved; and create & get feedback on a youth engagement plan for your Fair Trade group from a young person.

This workshop focuses on the call for certification systems to go further to meet the needs of farmers & workers. Hear examples of cocoa in Ghana & Cote d’Ivoire, what the campaign wants to achieve, and how producers are at its heart. Learn what is required to tackle structural issues that keep farmers in a poverty cycle and how the Fair Trade movement needs to broaden its message. We will cover how certification helps, what barriers exist to ensuring living incomes, and how Fair Trade Towns can accelerate the progress. Go back to your community confident in understanding where the Fair Trade movement is within the context of living income and why it is required.

Fair Trade & Climate Change

Tools for Fair Trade Towns

This workshop will provide an opportunity to explore a research project that aims to support campaigners with tools to apply the "power cube" to Fair Trade Towns campaigns. The power cube helps to identify power dynamics in local and national campaigns and help campaigners identify issues to tackle, actors to work with and discourses and practices to challenge. This is a new and currently-being-tested model, so your feedback will help shape the development of this tool into the future.
