Council decision
• Council resolved that, in order to ensure quality of itsgateway exams, the pre-reg. exam be conducted onlineto-

Saturday

• Online exam (March 2014 paper) for purpose of practice is available on the SAPC website (secure site)
Online exam process
• Book for the exam online
select venue, paper and sector to write
print confirmation letter
your paper will be available at venue you selected, e.g. if booked for WITS, present yourself at WITS
• Registration for the exam is 9h00 to 9h45
proof of identification (ID, driver’s license, passport)

• All interns must be seated at 9h45
• Computer login details to be provided by the invigilator
• Invigilator will advise which browser to use
no access to other sites – access only to SAPC website!
• SAPC secure site – know your login details!
Online exam instructions
• Ensure that your paper is correct: paper 1 vs paper 2
• Ensure that if you are writing paper 2, the category of
pharmacy is correct e.g. institutional, if you selected
institutional on booking
• You have 15 minutes reading time per paper
• May not commence writing until told to do so-
once the exam starts, timer is displayed on screen
time lapse reminders pop-up at 30 minutes intervals
Note: for the last 30min the pop-up will be at 15 min, 10 min
and 5 min intervals
• All questions are worth one mark
Exam format
• Randomization – questions and answers same but their
order will not be the same for each candidate
• Five (5) answer options per question
only one correct answer
must therefore select only one option
• Mouse-click option most appropriate/correct to you
selected option treated as your answer

• May answer questions in any given order

Exam format
• The questions are presented in sections (calculation types for paper 1 and competence standards for paper 2)
• You may answer the sections in any order you wish
• The sections for paper 1 are:
– Concentrations
– Formulations
– Parenteral solutions
– Dilutions
– Molecular weight
– Miscellaneous
Exam format
• The sections for paper 2 are:
– Organise and control the manufacturing, compounding and
packaging of pharmaceutical products
– Organise the procurement, storage and distribution of
pharmaceutical materials and products
– Dispense and ensure the optimal use of medicines prescribed to
the patient
– Provide pharmacist initiated care to the patient and ensure the
optimal use of medicine
– Provide information and education on health care and medicine
Exam format
• The sections for paper 2 (cont.):
– Promote community health and provide related information and
advise
– Participate in research to ensure the optimal use of medicines
– Participate in research to ensure the optimal use of medicines
– Facilitate the development of pharmaceutical personnel
– Practice pharmacy professionally and ethically
– Manage the pharmacy/pharmaceutical service
Exam format
• Click “Preview” button for overview of your answers
• Select sections to-
complete any unanswered questions

pop-up message “are you sure you want to submit?”
“No” takes you to the preview page
“Yes” submits answers for assessment – can’t edit!
Exam format
• Automatic submission if allocated time for exam expires
without all questions answered – even if “submit” button
not clicked
• Interns are required to provide feedback on the exam on
the SAPC website a day after the exam
