IB Mission StatementThe International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding andrespect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
Higher Level and Standard Level
Higher Level (HL) – Students must take a 2-year sequence of courses. Assessments are generally a bit longer and cover some additional content than those for SL.
Standard Level (SL) – Students may 1) complete a 1-year course specifically designed to meet SL syllabus requirements, or 2) complete a 2-year sequence of courses.
* Students can select to take SL assessments even if in a course with an HL label.
Earning the Diploma: HLs AND SLs
Play to strengths where possible. Must have 3 or 4
HLs, and the remaining are SLs.
Need to score an average of a 4 out of 7 on all HLs.
Need to score an average of 4 out of 7 on all SLs.
Earning the Diploma: POINTS
Earn 24 points out of a possible 45 points
– Complete Extended Essay, ToK, CAS
– Score of 4 out of 7 on six subject tests (24 points)
– 3 bonus points are possible for outstanding work on
Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge (45
points)
Earning the Diploma: CAS
• CREATIVITY, ACTION, and SERVICE
• About 50 hours per category over 2 years
• Long-term group project on issue of global
importance (3+ months)
• Reporting as required through BrightSpace
TIPS for CAS:
• Don’t avoid a difficult category – plan ahead.
• Are you registered for the “IB 2017 Diploma” class
on BrightSpace? See Mrs. Roper if not.
• Make a habit of checking school email.
• Should be talking about and planning group project
by Winter Break.
Earning the Diploma: TOK
• THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE
• Includes an essay and a presentation
• Looking at HOW we know what we know
• Looking at WAYS we know in each discipline
TIPS for TOK:
• ToK can be uncomfortable because it does not tell
you what you need to know. It is empowering
because you are accountable for the analysis rather
than the memorization.
• It’s about analyzing certainty, truth, methodology,
universality and the sources of your knowledge.
Please come prepared to share your questions, your
learnings, your thoughts, and yourself
Earning the Diploma: EE
• 4,000 word independently researched
EXTENDED ESSAY on a topic of your choice
• Requirements depend on the subject area
• Introduction to the EE is done in TOK – most
work will be done over the summer
• Will have an assigned advisor based on subject
TIPS for EE:
• Choose subject area wisely! Science essays, for
example, require a lot of precise and early planning
for labs.
• Research process is CRITICAL.
• MUST indicate in notes where info comes from,
whether word for word, etc. Unintentional plagiarism
from sloppy research is a problem.

TIPS for Surviving IB:
• Reflect on your study habits, how you prioritize
work, whether you procrastinate and how.
• Try to keep up your passion for the subjects and
focus on the learning, not the minutia. Accept that
you will be challenged, even if school has been
“easy” for you up until now.
• Consider how many AP tests are appropriate on top
of the work you will do for IB.
Fixed Mindset Growth Mindset
Recent Professional Development at Interlake with Dr. Richard Cash, who
expanded upon the work of Dr. Carol Dweck’s psychological study on mindset.
• Desired traits can be
learned and developed,
and success is more about
effort
• Curiosity and reflection are
valued
• Intelligence and talent are
set, and success is
dependent on them
• Taking risks and putting in
effort is frightening
