A few years ago if you wanted to know thegoing price for something you flickedthrough the Argos catalogue. Then the Internet arrived and today we are farmore likely to use Amazon as our go to price guide.

This change of approach is part of thereason Sainsbury’s wants to own Argos. Aswell as cutting costs by moving Argos storesto its supermarkets, combining head officefunctions and cross-selling to the two chains’customers, Sainsbury’s wants access to Argos’distribution network.

Amazon raised the bar on delivery withPrime. In response, and as part of its effortsto reinvent itself as a digital retailer, Argoshas been offering delivery by 10pm fororders made by 6pm. For large items delivery

will be the next day if ordered by 8pm.It is this service that Mike Coupe,

Sainsbury’s chief executive, is betting on toattract shoppers who want the convenienceof online shopping with the instantgratification they would get if they hadphysically gone to the store.

Presuming the deal goes through – andthere doesn’t seem to be a queue of rivalbidders waiting in the wings – and Coupecan achieve the much more difficult task ofintegrating the chains, he may succeed increating a retailer that can compete withAmazon and John Lewis on delivery andbreadth of products.

Delivery was one of the aspects thatsuppliers at the January Furniture Show tried to differentiate themselves with.Delivery from stock and direct home deliverywere messages heard time and time again.

But whereas Sainsbury’s/Argos has noproblem with delivering in liveried vans, many independent retailers still want theirname on the vehicle, not that of a logisticscompany.

Solving that particular contradiction willprobably take longer than successfullymarrying the bride and groom.

Combining Sainsbury’s and Argos might not seeman obvious strategy, but itdoes make sense in thisonline age

£1.3bn Argos deal will‘future-proof’ Sainsbury’sSupermarket chain Sainsbury’s says its proposed £1.3bntakeover of Home Retail Group, owner of Argos, will ‘future-proof’ it.

Mike Coupe, J Sainsbury chief executive, says the deal willallow consumers to shop ‘whenever and wherever’ theywant. ‘We can bake a bigger cake and do a better job for ourcustomers than we can do as separate businesses. Ourcustomers want us to offer more choice and for that choiceto be faster than ever, driven by the rise of mobile phoneand digital technology.’

Coupe plans to close some Argos branches as leasesexpire and open concessions in Sainsbury’s stores. Thesupermarket says the leases of around half of Argos’ 734 UKstores are due for renewal over the next four to five years, and it is believed to have identified between 150 and 200stores which it could shut and move into a nearbySainsbury’s store.

He says the combined businesses will boost sales growth, improve delivery networks, and allow them to sell theirproducts to each other’s customers.

Sainsbury’s expects synergies of at least £120m year, withhalf coming from moving Argos stores to supermarkets, athird from head office costs and the remainder from sellingits homewares and clothing through Argos. It says achievingthe synergies will cost £140m over three years and a further£140m on store fit-out costs over the same time.

Coupe says about 40% of its shoppers have bought goodsfrom Sainsbury’s and Argos, and that the success of 10Argos concessions already in the supermarkets showedthere was no clash between the brands.

‘This is one of the myths that seems to be constantlypeddled. There is a slight difference [in the groups’customers] but it’s pretty marginal. When you talk tocustomers in shops they get this. They think it’s delightfullysimple and makes life easier,’ says Coupe.

The deal is conditional on the agreed sale of HRG’sHomebase to Australian conglomerate Wesfarmers goingthrough. Wesfarmers plans to rebrand Homebase in favourof its Australian Bunnings Warehouse chain in the next threeto five years. It says it will invest £500m on updating storesand opening new ones, in contrast to HRG’s recent approachof cutting costs and closing stores.

Kozee Sleep and Layzee Sleep bossMohammed Rafiq is to besentenced on 12 February afterbeing found guilty of conspiracy totraffic individuals within the UK.

A jury at Leeds Crown Court hadbeen told how an investigation intoKozee Sleep, based in Dewsbury, and its subsidiary Layzee Sleep, based in Batley, began after twoHungarians, Janos Orsos andFerenc Illes, were arrested overhuman trafficking allegations.

Large numbers of Hungarianmen were employed at Rafiq’sKozee Sleep factory, supplied byOrsos.

Prosecutor Christopher TehraniQC, said Rafiq knew Orsos’sorganisation would source him‘cheap slave labour to work at

Kozee Sleep and Layzee Sleepfactories’.

The jury heard that Orsos waspaid £3 an hour for the workers, well below the national minimumwage. In turn he paid the workersjust £10 a week with the promise of£1,000 after six months.

Tehrani said Rafiq was ‘aware ofthe circumstances of the Hungariannationals who were working atthese sites and went along withtheir exploitation as a slaveworkforce. The prosecution submitsthat this course of offendingdemonstrates a persistentcampaign of exploitation involvingmany Hungarian men over aprolonged period of time.’

Rafiq, 60, of Batley, had deniedthe charge.

Some 65 jobs are to be lost at Brintons Carpets plantat Kidderminster, but affected workers could beoffered positions at its Telford plant.

‘In order to maintain and strengthen our positionas one of the world’s leading suppliers of bespokecarpets, it’s vital we constantly review our businessoperations to ensure we remain competitive. As aresult, we are proposing to restructure productionprocesses at our Kidderminster site to include newerand more modern methods of production, with agreater focus on higher technology processes,’ saysRob Greenfield, Brintons group manufacturing andlogistics director.

He says the proposed restructure will enable thecompany to offer a more modern and flexibleproduction environment, placing it at the forefrontof global carpet production and bring woven carpetmanufacturing into the 21st century.

’We will, where possible, seek opportunities forvoluntary redundancy, as well as offering newpositions at our Telford plant,’ he says.

Sales and sharesboost for ScSUpholstery and flooring retailer ScSsaw its shares leap after reporting anincrease in sales over the Christmasperiod.

The group says like for like ordersfor the 25 weeks to 16 January wereup by 8.8%, which it describes as ‘a pleasing result against toughcomparatives’.

Sales at ScS and its House of Fraserconcessions remained strong over the Christmas and January salesperiod.

Orders for the 16 week period to 14 November were up by 7.9%.

As a result it expects profits for thehalf-year to be ‘significantly’ higher.

‘While we still have key tradingperiods over Easter and the two MayBank Holidays in the current financial

year, we are delighted with theperformance over the Christmas and January sales period and for the year to date,’ says David Knight,ScS ceo.

Its share price rose by 18% to 180p,valuing it at £72m. Last January itfloated at 190p and peaked at 229p inMarch before collapsing to 143p inMay when it warned of a major slumpin Bank Holiday sales.

Meanwhile, the chain has namedChris Muir as its new chief financialofficer. He will join on 4 April after leaving vehicle hire groupNorthgate, where he is group financedirector.

Muir succeeds Ron Turnbull, whoannounced in August he wanted toleave after 11 years at ScS.

Carpetright margins dip despite winter boostCarpetright has enjoyed a good wintersale performance but warned thatmargins have slipped.

The chain says UK like for like saleswere 6% higher in the four weeks to 23 January. In the 12 week period like forlike sales were up 2.4%, but total saleswere 1.3% lower.

It warned that UK margins would dropby between 100 and 150 basis points inthe full year, compared with a previousforecast of 70 basis points, because ofgreater promotions and higher bed andsmooth flooring sales, on which marginsare lower.

Like for like sales in the Republic ofIreland, Belgium and Netherlands rose by4.2% and by 4.4% in total. Whenconverted to sterling, sales were 2.7%lower.

‘In the UK, we delivered our ninthconsecutive quarter of like for like salesgrowth. While we saw some softening oflike for likes in the pre-Christmas period, reflecting lower footfall, customernumbers recovered in the important

January sale period,’ says Wilf Walsh,Carpetright chief executive.

‘Our trading performance over the lastfour weeks, with like for like growth of6.0% against exceptionally strong prioryear comparatives, gives us confidencethat the enhanced IFC offer and strongpromotions launched on Boxing Day are

hitting the spot with our customers.‘Like for like sales growth in our Rest of

Europe business was better thanexpected as consumer spendingcontinued to recover, particularly in theNetherlands and the Republic of Ireland.’

It still expects to make between £17m-£18m for the full year.

Marginsare loweron beds

Positive startfor Topps TilesTiles and flooring chain Topps Tiles hasseen sales rise again. The 340-storeretailer saw like for like sales increase by4.4% in the 13 weeks to 2 January.

During the quarter it introduced 17ranges – lines introduced in the past yearaccounted for 8.9% of sales in thequarter – while it completed its second‘lab store’ with new displays andmerchandising.

‘I am pleased to report an encouragingstart to the financial year with like for like sales growth of 4.4% in the firstquarter. Our strategy of “out-specialisingthe specialists” continues to be veryeffective and we are confident that ourplan for 2016 will see us deliveradditional profitable sales growth as we further extend the appeal of theTopps brand,’ says Matthew Williams,Topps Tiles ceo.

During the quarter it also saw the endof its clearance stores and completed themove of support functions to itsLeicester head office.

Products that claim to use New Zealand wool are to betested by Wools of New Zealand to establish they are usingit and not replacing it with wool from other countries.

Rosstan Mazey, the recently appointed WoNZ chiefexecutive, told Interiors Monthly at Domotex that it isdeveloping a database of wool from the New Zealandfarmers that own the company.

Initially this will enable it to test if products are usingwool from the country, with the aim of having a system bythe summer that will allow traceability of the wool throughthe supply chain on a farm by farm basis.

WoNZ wants to maintain the premium New Zealand woolobtains thanks to its whiteness. To boost this it has co-developed a scouring technology that produces asignificantly whiter wool that is better for dyeing. Mazeysays WoNZ is looking to initially license the technology andthen possibly buy it. Fibre using the technology will bebranded as Glacial XT.

Producers will be able to dye a wider range of colours andshades. Sample colours seen at Domotex are more vibrantand initial results show it to offer much more colourfastness,Mazey says. The dyed fibres will be branded as Kiteq.

‘The world is looking more and more to have a directconnection with producers: in our case the farmers. We wantto maintain the integrity of the products that are using NewZealand wool and will test products that claim to be usingNew Zealand wool to check that it is New Zealand wool,’ hesays.

WoNZ wants to ensure products are using the right wool

‘It’s all very well for customers and theirrights, but why won’t suppliers bendover backwards for me when I’m forcedto do that for my customer?’ This is afamiliar cry, especially from smallbusinesses; when things go wrong thesupplier won’t always reimburse theretailer the full cost of resolving acomplaint.

What can be done about this? It’s aproblem that has arisen because the lawassumes a retailer knows his businessand has the strength and knowledge tonegotiate fair deals with suppliers. Butthe consumer is assumed to be ignorantand in need of protection fromunscrupulous traders (sadly, there aresome) so the law gives the consumerstatutory rights that can’t be avoided.

In practice, most suppliers havestringent terms and conditions and mostsmall retailers are unable to avoid them ifthey want to sell that supplier’s goods, orthey’re unaware of the meaning of the‘Ts&Cs’ and don’t bother to get legaladvice to help them understand the risks.

So what can you do? In response to

Independent issuesTips for resolving problems with suppliers

Having a good relationship with suppliers helps gets problems resolved

feedback from a small retailer last month,I have some suggestions that should behelpful. Ditch the difficult suppliers, or at theleast, talk to them. Is it worth selling aparticular range of goods if the supplier’sattitude will erode your profit marginsover the course of your relationship?

You may feel that they won’t worryabout losing your account, but if moreretailers did this, they’d soon buck uptheir ideas. I know a few suppliers thathave a reputation for poor customerservice, but the ones I’ve spoken toabout this clearly don’t intend to givethat impression. And, they tell me, theydon’t hear any grumbles from theiraccount holders. Build good relationships with yoursuppliers. Not only with the reps, butwith their customer service agents, too.Suppliers know which of their accountscan be trusted and which are more likelyto try something on. If you go on afactory or warehouse visit, make sure youmeet your customer service contact soyou’re more than just a name. And

Richard Renouf

although you may occasionally ask for afavour, never ever mislead the supplierabout a complaint to try to wanglesomething out of them. It won’t pay inthe long run. Team up with other retailers. Join abuying group so you can take advantageof its buying power and ability toencourage suppliers to resolvecomplaints. Talk to other retailers at tradeevents to find out who the goodsuppliers are, and share your experiencesto help others avoid the bad ones. There are independent consultants(like me, but others are available) who, inthe event of a more serious disputeeither with a customer or supplier cangive you an independent assessment ofwhat’s gone wrong and why. If thismeans you have a stronger case againstyour supplier (or are saved the cost andtime of pursuing a complaint that isn’tvalid) it will be worth it.Visit: www.richard-renouf.com

Realistic impressionsKarndean is expanding its Van Gogh Wood collection

Karndean Designflooring is adding 12wood hues to its Van Gogh Woodcollection.

Inspired by reclaimed natural wood, the 48in x 7in plank designs replicate theunique look that comes from thetransformation of wood over time, inaddition to processes such as scorching, liming and smoking.

The four groups: French Oaks,American Redwood, Scottish Beech andMexican Cypress feature a grain andcolour palette to suit most areas.

‘Our new Van Gogh designs are ourboldest to date,’ says Scott Cochrane,Karndean Designflooring sales director.‘They are a welcome addition and reflectthe trends, such as rough luxe, that we’reforecasting within home interior design. The collection is not only design-led, butalso retains all the durability and ease ofmaintenance our customers have cometo expect, making them ideal for anyresidential or commercial space.’

Styles for French Oaks are lightly lime-washed Tawny Oak, Burgundy Oak,Hessian Oak and Honey Oak that arereminiscent of salvaged antique flooring. The rich grain details and large scaleplanks complement both traditional andcontemporary homes.

There are three Rough-Luxe designsinspired by American Redwood railwaysleepers – Reclaimed Redwood, AgedRedwood and Salvaged Redwood.Running with the theme of reclaimed

woods, Karndean’s product designerswere drawn to the unique detail andtexture of redwood railway sleepers thatage beautifully.

Introducing new texturisingtechniques, they have taken the naturalageing process one step further, givingthe American Redwood designs the lookof repurposed timber without thepractical drawbacks of real wood such assplintering, cracking and warping.

‘A perfect backdrop to any living space, the three rich brown, smoked designscreate a warm rich canvas. Incorporatingfuming and smoking techniques thathave been used by real wood flooringmanufacturers for years, the rich browntones of Burnished Beech and SmokedBeech planks can accompany nearly any

Lime Washed Cypress VGW95T

decor scheme, while the strikingvariation of Charred Oak makes a realstatement,’ adds Cochrane.

The collection is rounded off by thelime-washed Cypress and BurnishedCypress. Combining the limed finish ofHoney Oak and the burnt effect ofCharred Oak, these are some of the mostdetailed in the collection. The result ofliming and smoking techniques is a morerefined and sophisticated aestheticsuitable for a wide range of interiorstylings benefiting from a highly realistic, rustic feel.

With a recently introduced lifetimeresidential guarantee, the completeKarndean Van Gogh collection willfeature 32 wood designs. Karndean, tel: 01386 820 200

‘History does repeat itself. The AISFurniture Show proved to be just assuccessful as the earlier IMM Cologneshow. Together they mark a high point inthe company’s story,’ says Sandra Gabler, himolla UK and Ireland country manager.

‘Even though we have a 60-yearhistory of craftsmanship, and have beenrecognised as world leaders in reclinerchairs for around three decades now, recent successes have made the presenttime a landmark era for us. At bothshows our ranges – both new andevolved – were met with strongapproval, complementing last summer’saward for Best Recliner Manufacturerfrom Interiors Monthly readers.’

But the real measure of success, shesays, is how well the products arereceived by the buying public.

‘Our stockists are confirming strongsales, especially for the new Cumulyrange comprising Brennand, Brock andthe Brent wall-hugging sofas withelectric motion,’ she says.

Also helping power the company’spopularity is class-leading technology,

Gabler says. Its electrically-operated sofasand chairs make reclining, adjustingfootrests and finding the best position forbackrests as simple as pressing a button.Advanced, rechargeable battery packsmean the seating doesn’t have to beclose to a power socket, and there’s noneed to have unsightly electrical leadstrailing across the floor.

‘Another definite crowd-pleaser among

new and existing stockists has been theintroduction of stylish and durable fabricsacross a range of chairs and sofas. Thenew designs have been well received;obviously a material success in themaking. All in all, himolla has had apowerful start to what should prove tobe an extremely successful year for salesand growth,’ adds Gabler.Visit: www.ultimatesofa.co.uk

Since becoming countrymanager, Gabler has beeninstrumental in thecompany’s success in theUK and Republic of Ireland. Her ability is grounded inlong experience with thecompany: over the pastdecade she has worked as an apprentice, then in-house office managerbefore being appointed toher present role.

Rock onDe Sede hasreimagined therocking chair

De Sede’s DS-900 is a reinterpretation of the classic rocking chair. From behind the DS-900 has a broad, attractive appearancereminiscent of an elephant. From the front, it is adorned with intricatedetails. The chair rocks just so, in a way that invites the user‘s thoughtsto wander.

The design team of Ophelie Sanga and Ini Archibong was inspiredby the design of a saddle: when rocking back and forth, the chair isreminiscent of a comfortable ride on the back of an elephant, almostmaking the user feel as though they are on holiday.Visit: www.desede.ch

Brooklands is renowned as thebirthplace of British motorsport andaviation and is home to Concorde: stillregarded as the ultimate in commercialairline travel, even though it no longerflies. Brooklands was the first purpose-built motor racing circuit, constructed in1907, and saw many engineering andtechnological achievements throughoutthe 20th century.

‘How apt it is therefore for us to exhibitour new products and designs at such avenue which is synonymous withtechnological development,’ says NeilRobinson, Sealy UK sales and marketingdirector.

Under wrapsSealy will reveal its latest models at Brooklands in May

Sealy’s pedigree in its own fieldstretches even further back to the 19thcentury from the small town of Sealy inTexas where its first cotton-filled mattresswas made in 1881. More innovations andpatents followed culminating in 1950when the first Posturepedic brandmattress was introduced.

‘The unique advanced coil design, with

independently hinged springs thatcombined both comfort and lumbarsupport, became an immediate andworldwide success. This commitment toinnovation continues to the present day,the latest of which retailers will be ableto see at the May showcase,’ addsRobinson.Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

Not to mention thatdesigners for fashion and interiors often draw upon the sameinspirations for new collections.

‘It’s hard not to when it’s all around you. From the placeswe visit to the patterns in our natural environment, it all playsa part in shaping trends,’ says Richard Wilde, MuralsWallpaper md.Visit: www.muralswallpaper.co.uk

‘A spring time favourite, thisstunning backdrop amplifies an oldclassic. Large scale florals make agorgeous change to ditsy prints. We’re used to seeing intricate, repetitive motifs, but 2016 willpave the way for something biggerand better. This magnified look

gives us a chance to appreciate thefiner details of the design. Thebeautiful shadows on stems andthe sprinkling of pollen acrosspetals, it’s all reminiscent of thestunning sun dresses display at theAdam Selman RTW New YorkFashion Week show.’

FEELING FLORAL

FARAWAY LANDS‘Whether it’s a weekend break or a gap year, travel is a hugepart of our lives and it’s difficult not to be influenced by theplaces and cultures you come across. Fashion runways arealways awash with motifs, techniques and looks inspired byfaraway lands, but in 2016 we predict people will incorporatememories of travel experiences into their interior design.

‘You’re of course going to collect some trinkets along the way,but you can go even further than that. Pay homage to youradventures by charting them on your wall. Showing yourpassion for travel and current trends, with map muralsproviding an opportunity to show off your experiences fromaround the world. Why not pin photos of your holidays on themap where each photo was taken? Or you could even pin theplaces you plan to visit in the future.’

‘The bright shapes of Kim Seo Ryong’s 2016 showcase still linger in our mind. The modelsilhouettes combined with such edgy motifs posed a stunning juxtaposition. Geometrics playa huge role in interior design, and this will be even more apparent this year. We use thesevibrant shapes to totally transform rooms, as their edges can create an interior illusion thatmakes rooms feel bigger. For 2016, geometrics will be bolstered by bright colours, as opposedto pastel shades.’

MAKE IT MARBLED‘Missoni has notoriously used marbling inrunway items and this pattern is set to be oneof the big textures of 2016. A sophisticatedlook crafted by Mother Nature herself, it’seasy to see the appeal.

‘While fashion encourages us to go wildwith colours, when it comes to using thismotif in interior design, less is often more. The minimalist marble pattern suits a white orgrey setting. Letting the motif make astatement without using bold colours givesoff a truly timeless style that would lookfantastic in any room of the home. Forinteriors influenced by New York FashionWeek, it simply has to be a marble mural.’ Steel Works: a unique design of rusted steel in bold shades of brown and blue
