Its culture of ‘innovation and risk-taking’ undoubtedly helped drive its growth to become one of the leaders in design, development and manufacture of electronic HID ballasts, LED drivers and control products. Its LeafNut wireless streetlighting control system has been a major technical success. The company has invested heavily in LED technology and the success of its CoolLED range of LED drivers has been a key contributor to growth. Directors Michael and John McDonnell are pictured. HIGHLY COMMENDED: Toshiba Lighting Judges cited the Japanese light source maker for its ‘quality lamps across the range’. The panel was particularly impressed with Toshiba’s LED version of the incandescent lamp, which it named as the winner in the Light Source Innovation of the Year category. COMMENDED: Edge Lighting Services COMMENDED: Xicato LIGHTING DESIGN PRACTICE OF THE YEAR in association with WINNER: Sutton Vane Associates For the ‘sheer quality’ of its output over the period from the Olympic Park landscaping and public realm – which was both ‘sympathetic and iconic’ – to the ‘flawless’ treatment of the Crown Jewels, judges said SVA was the outstanding lighting design practice in 2012. HIGHLY COMMENDED: Arup The judges thought that Arup has great ‘strength in depth’, and a talented team who ‘can handle the big complex projects’ including King’s Cross station and Bradford City Park, winner of the award for Urban Lighting Project of the Year. HIGHLY COMMENDED: Paul Nulty Lighting Design Established last year, Paul Nulty Lighting Design has already worked on more than 90 projects. Judges said the firm is an ‘ambitious and fast-growing’ practice that had achieved much in a short period. INTERIOR LUMINAIRE OF THE YEAR in association with WINNER: Laser Blade – iGuzzini iGuzzini’s Laser Blade is an LED indoor recessed fitting designed to deliver a concentrated, dramatic light that eliminates light beams not required to light the objects. The judges said the Laser Blade was ‘beautifully executed’ with ‘superb attention to detail’. HIGHLY COMMENDED: Aurista – Trilux Aurista is a recessed, lay-in 600 x 600mm LED luminaire containing five LED modules with a unique star-shaped design. Judges liked the ‘innovative concept’. HIGHLY COMMENDED: Metroled – Universal Fibre Optics Metroled is a display-case LED light bar that combines spotlights and light strips that can be moved within the bar while lit to ensure perfect illumination. Judges described it as ‘highly versatile’ and ‘well thought through’. COMMENDED: Foil LED – Whitecroft Lighting EXTERIOR LUMINAIRE OF THE YEAR in association with WINNER: Aeroblades – Cree and Speirs + Major Aeroblades is the result of a collaboration between lighting design practice Speirs + Major and LED manufacturer Cree, in which the two companies set out to produce the next generation of urban amenity lighting. With over 20 dierent optics, the range oers exceptional optical control with very high eciency. Judges called it a ‘dramatic new form factor’ that was ‘truly innovative’ and ‘expertly executed’. HIGHLY COMMENDED: Archer – Fern-Howard Archer uses patented MicroLens optics technology to create a highly directional, highly ecient luminaire. Judges cited the ‘clever optics’ that delivered great uniformity. COMMENDED: Axia – Urbis COMMENDED: Solar Paddle – Zeta Specialist Lighting @Lux_Live
