2. General description

The Interface Board (IFBD) is custom designed to interface the Telit module variant xE922-3GR with the

Telit Generic Evaluation Board (EVB) thus forming the complete Development Kit of xE922-3GR

The IFBD provides the mapping of Telit module signals and functions into the generic EVB signals and

functions

The xE922-3GR IFBD design includes the following items:

xE922-3GR module

RF SMA connectors

Board to Board connectors for interfacing to EVB main board

Module specific circuitry which is not part of the generic circuitry of the EVB

The IFBD also makes provision to assemble a custom designed module socket instead of assembling the

module.

Power supply and control interface for the RF module is provided from the EVB via the B2B connectors.

To monitor the temperature, a thermistor is placed on the top GND plane, close to the module which should be

representative for the module’s backside temperature.

The bottom plane solder-mask is cutout below the RF module , in order to optimally mount/attach a heatsink

aiming to cool the module via the many heat conducting L1-L8 GND via’s.

The board is designed to accommodate new modules according xE922 FF (34x40mm) LGA 441 pin mapping.

4. 120-Pin male B2B connectors

The interface between IFBD and EVB is implemented via 3pcs of 120p (20p x 6 rows) SAMTEC SEARAY

1.27mm High Speed/High Density B2B connectors (10mm stacking height SEAM/SEAF).

These items are specific to the xE922-3GR module thus are not part of the generic EVB main board

6.1. CHG_POK

As explained in the xE922-3GR HW User Guide, in case that external charger IC solution is not applied, there

is a requirement to connect CHG_POK_IN line to 1V8_OUT via a FET transistor, as shown in the snapshot

below.

Another stuffing option would be R23 stuff / R40 not stuffed. In that case the system would start as soon as

V_BAT is applied, since charger detection is a valid start up event trigger for the PMU.

6.2. ADC_VBATMEAS

As explained in the xE922-3GR HW user guide, in case that external charger IC solution is not applied, there

is still the requirement to connect ADC_VBATMEAS to the V_BAT supply input

(R30 stuffed / R31 not stuffed = default).

In case a system compatible external charger IC is applied on the EVB main Board, ADC_VBATMEAS

should be connected to the battery (R30 not stuffed / R31 stuffed).

6.3. Analog audio output

xE922-3GR has two options to provide Analog audio output to the 3.5mm headset connector on the EVB

main Board:

Single ended stereo : R16 not stuffed / R17 stuffed ( default)

o In that case it is recommended to use the Stereo Jack on EVB

Differential mono: R16 stuffed / R17 not stuffed

o In that case it is recommended to use the RJ11 connector on EVB

6.4. POWER ON_OFF / RESET

The EVB main board provides in a push button PWR_PB, when asserted active LOW polarisation.

In order to comply with the active HIGH polarity of xE922-3GR system, the transistor Q1 inverts the signal.

As also explained in the xE922-3GR HW user guide, when the system is supplied with V_BAT for the first

time, it will automatically start up without waiting for a start-up event.

This so called ‘first connect’ power up condition can be disabled by adding a pulldown resistor on ON_OFF

signal.

As such, R15 disables the first connect feature.

MAIN_RESET_IN signal is an active LOW reset input for the xE922-3GR system.

It can be asserted by

RESET_PB push button on the EVB main board

JTAG debug connector signal JTAG_RESET

The other stuff options, R28 and R26/C4/U4, are only for special debug purposes and future provisioning.

6.5. USB

As explained in the xE922-3GR HW user guide, for proper DRD / OTG operation, USB_ID and

GPIO1_EINT2 should be connected together, R38.

6.6. CAM_I2C

Starting from xE922-3GR revision CS1772B, the CAM_I2C signals will no longer have an internal pullup

resistors to VAUX_1P8V.

External pullup resistors will be required to VAUX_1P8V for camera I2C interfacing, and to 1V8_OUT in

case the interface is used for other general purpose I2C operation.

6.7. USIM

Starting from xE922-3GR revision CS1772B, internal pullups will be foreseen on the SIMIO lines (R43/R44

will become obsolete).

For proper SIM card detection (active LOW, external pullup resistors are required (R41/R42).

6.8. USB OTG driver

In order to support the USB host function, an external 5V supply is required to feed non-self-powered devices,

such as USB flash-drive, etc...

The above circuitry implements this function.

6.9. JTAG / MIPI connector

The EVB main board has a standard 20p box header used for JTAG interfacing.

In-order to better match the JTAG tools (JTAG Pod) used for xE922-3GR, an additional JTAG connector (J1)

was added to IFBD.

On top of this, J1 allows to execute MIPI tracing feature.

For signal integrity reasons, MIPI tracing requires the removal of the following resistors:

R13/R9/R11/R5/R6/R7/R8/R10/R12

This makes the ‘multiplexed’ GPIO interfaces inaccessible for EVB main board.

6.10. RF connectors

The xE922-3GR system can work with a passive GNSS antenna. (Internal LNA available on the module)

For active GNSS antenna application, a dedicated 3.0V regulator which resides on the EVB main board can be

enabled for suppling the external antenna LNA via GPS_LNA_BIAS line.

6.11. Temperature monitor

For test and monitoring purpose, the IFBD board foresees in a thermistor with good thermal contact to the

GND plane of the xE922-3GR. This monitoring is available via the EVB main board Arduino add-on board

(A-Star 32U4 Polulu) also featuring the remote control operation.

8. Safety Recommendations

READ CAREFULLY

Be sure the use of this product is allowed in the country and in the environment required. The

use of this product may be dangerous and has to be avoided in the following areas:

Where it can interfere with other electronic devices in environments such as hospitals,

airports, aircrafts, etc.

Where there is risk of explosion such as gasoline stations, oil refineries, etc. It is

responsibility of the user to enforce the country regulation and the specific

environment regulation.

Do not disassemble the product; any mark of tampering will compromise the warranty

validity. We recommend following the instructions of the hardware user guides for a correct

wiring of the product. The product has to be supplied with a stabilized voltage source and the

wiring has to be conforming to the security and fire prevention regulations. The product has to

be handled with care, avoiding any contact with the pins because electrostatic discharges may

damage the product itself. Same cautions have to be taken for the SIM, checking carefully the

instruction for its use. Do not insert or remove the SIM when the product is in power saving

mode.

The system integrator is responsible of the functioning of the final product; therefore, care has

to be taken to the external components of the module, as well as of any project or installation

issue, because the risk of disturbing the GSM network or external devices or having impact

on the security. Should there be any doubt, please refer to the technical documentation and the

regulations in force. Every module has to be equipped with a proper antenna with specific

characteristics. The antenna has

to be installed with care in order to avoid any interference with other electronic devices and

has to guarantee a minimum distance from the body (20 cm). In case of this requirement

cannot be satisfied, the system integrator has to assess the final product against the SAR

regulation.
