WHAT IS IT?Interaction Adaptation Theory states that we alter our behavior in response to the behavior of another person in conversations (Infante, 2010).

This is done by either reciprocating (matching) or compensating in order to to keep the balance and success of the interaction.

There are three main factors that contribute to Interaction Adaptation Theory…

Page 4: Interaction Adaptation Theory

REQUIREMENTS

Personal needs that a person has in order for a successful interaction to occur

Page 5: Interaction Adaptation Theory

EXPECTATIONS

These can either be societal norms of appropriateness or opinions developed from previous interactions with the specific person.

Page 6: Interaction Adaptation Theory

DESIRESWhat one hopes to get out of an interaction, usually based on personality and personal wants/needs

WHO USES IAT?First conceptualized by Judee Burgoon, IAT is used fairly often in conversations, especially if the speakers have varied speaking styles or behaviors in conversation.

Page 8: Interaction Adaptation Theory

WHAT’S THE POINT?

IAT keeps the balance in a conversation, in addition to making it easier for the speakers’ to relate to one another. If successful, IAT can help strengthen the relationship and quality of conversation.

CRITICISMSSome researchers believe that there is not enough empirical research to support IAT, but it is a relatively new theory, so it does not have as much support as older communication theories.

IAT GONE WRONGSometimes, our requirements, expectations, and desires get in the way and do not match up with the other person we are communicating with. This can cause confusion and disappointment.

In this example, Tom has to adapt to a situation when his expectations and desires are not met.
