Fostering Industry Development
“ITS – Enhancing Liveable Cities and Communities”
Established ITS Applications
• Interoperable tolling tags
– Across Australia (toll roads in three states to date)
– Across Public and Private providers
– Telematics used to monitor heavy vehicle location, speed, mass and route compliance
“ITS – Enhancing Liveable Cities and Communities”
Established ITS Applications
• Managed motorways
– Replicating successful local investments over the last
decade, Australia will invest ~$120 million (AUD/USD) over the
next 3 years
– The program aims to retrofit urban arterial roads to better
manage traffic flows and deliver real-time information
– Sites are operating or being installed in Sydney and Melbourne,
with more under consideration in other cities
“ITS – Enhancing Liveable Cities and Communities”
Established ITS Applications
• Intelligent Access Program – Uses telematics to improve or enable heavy vehicle access to the
Road network
– Telematics used to monitor heavy vehicle location, speed, mass and route compliance
• Telematics to regulate heavy vehicle driver fatigue – Electronic Work Diaries
“ITS – Enhancing Liveable Cities and Communities”
Established ITS Applications
Connected mobility for motorists
– Live & predictive traffic data
across major capitals
– RACV Connected Vehicle app trial
• monitor your car remotely
• obtain alerts about mechanical issues
with your car
• get updates on live traffic conditions to
your favourite destinations
• find the cheapest fuel nearby
• Eco driving advice

Established ITS Applications • City Safety, collision avoidance
• Adaptive cruise control
• Driver Alert
• Lane departure warning / lane keeping aid
• Road sign information
• Active head beam
• Active bending lights

C-ITS – International Trials
“ITS – Enhancing Liveable Cities and Communities”
Australian Trials • Australia is investigating a range of ‘newer’
freight ITS applications:
– C-ITS Pilot – a four year trial of a 42km route South
of Sydney aligned with US DOT Test Beds. Trial
would test Signal Phase and Timing, Weather
Warnings, Cooperative Intersection Collision
Avoidance, Reduced Speed Zone Warning and
Rest Area Alerts.
– Smart Rest Area Cooperative Intelligent Transport
System (C-ITS) Trial on Newell Highway
“ITS – Enhancing Liveable Cities and Communities”
Infrastructure Implications • Australia is investigating a Road User Charge for heavy vehicles based
on mass, distance and location, instead of fuel
• Technology enables user pays
• Managed motorways / arterials
• Richer information to motorists
• Automatics Electronic Braking – safety & mobility impacts
“ITS – Enhancing Liveable Cities and Communities”
Melbourne to host the 2016 ITS World Congress:
• October 10 – 14, 2016
• 5,000+ ITS professionals from around the globe
