As the current spate of connected devices such as smart watches, smart TV’s and so oncontinues, it was only a matter of time before smart motorcycle helmet’s started appearing.There are a few brands out there with concepts; Skully, Bell/360fly to name just two. One thathas surfaced and grabbed my attention is the iC-R concept from Intelligent Cranium Helmets.

The iC-R has some really exciting features which set it apart from other brands. such as;

2 transparent LCD Heads Up Displays (HUD’s). These screens will display notonly the real time video streaming from the rear cameras, but also connecteddevice information such as; Navigation, Incoming Calls, Telemetry and more.

LED Interior Notification Lighting. This system will work in tandem with a warningbeep or vibration to alert the rider to a vehicle that is closing from behind.

Two rear view cameras. The cameras will offer 210° of rear view directly to theHUD’s as well as providing the telemetry for the warning notification system.

Bluetooth. The Bluetooth system will work in conjunction with a mobile app thatwill allow users to link and communicate directly with each other without the needfor additional hardware. The app will also have some social features such as theability to broadcast where you are.

User Controlled Tinting Visor. This system will automatically tint the visor at thetouch of a button.

Solar Panel. The solar panel will enable the system to maintain power levelswhile the rider is on the move. there is also an external power socket forrecharging.

Software Centre. The iC-R will offer the ability to obtain software updates viaBluetooth as well as driving all the features of the helmet.

I think that the iC-R could be a very exciting product, especially with the iC-R to iC-R Bluetoothconnectivity, the and the smartphone integration. I hope that Intelligent Cranium Helmets cantake this from concept to reality.

I spoke to Intelligent Cranium Helmets CEO, Ambrose Dodson via email earlier, and hementioned that they have worked very hard on pricing, but it seems that a way has been foundto make the iC-R available to almost every rider when the helmet is due to be released inDecember 2016. The team has also been working hard on refining the design and features ofthe iC-R and have added more useful and unique features.

My only concern is the helmet itself. Obviously the technology is fantastic, and I understand thatIntelligent Cranium Helmets will be seeking DOT, Snell and ECE approvals prior to release, butno mention has been made of construction type or materials. If I learn more about this, I willupdate this article.
