SPORTS COACHES-WHAT ARE THEY?• Sports coaching can be defined as the process of

guiding, training an motivating an individual in preparation for any sporting career (LifeCoachDirectory, 2012). Not only do sports coaches act as a resource of learning for individuals, but they also act as a role model and mentor.

• Aside from teaching individuals the importance of the offensive and defensive aspects of the game, creating an inclusive and supportive community for all team members is important.

• As a sports coach, it is essential that the code of ethics is abided to. This includes being respectful of the rights, dignity and worth of every human being, regardless of sex, disability, ethnic origin or religion (BasketballAustralia, 2013).

SPORTS TRAINING-WHY DO WE NEED IT?

• Similar to all sports, it is absolutely essential that individuals undertake training, which allows for them to learn and develop basic skills. Along with training, as a player develops, they will not only gain a better understanding of the game itself, but terminologies involved.

• Completing training will allow for development of not only both their playing and athletic abilities, their fundamental ball control skills, but also puts focus on the opportunity for team bonding.

TRAINING DRILLSThe following training drill is just one of many thatI’ve implemented during training. Each works ondifferent aspects of the game, and will allow fordevelopment over different areas.

Three Man WeaveOne of the most commonly run basketball drills, thethree-man weave, is a drill that greatly aids thedevelopment of not only fitness and passing, butalso control in a fast break scenario. This drill cannot only be used to develop skills, but is also a greatwarmup drill. This drill allows development of aplayers’ ability to pass the ball sharply andefficiently while moving at high speeds, while thesecond part of the drill works on the players’ abilityto smoothly and quickly transition from offence todefence (Coaching, 2010). Demonstration of how the drill is run

INTERVIEW

The interview conducted on 23/02/2018 with

Basketball coach, Thuy Maksimovic, provided me

with credible, relevant information, which has not

only allowed me to complete my research, but has

also broadened my knowledge surrounding the topic

of sports coaching. Questions included within the

interview touched on what its like to be a sports

coach, and how she has been able to be so successful

over the years.

As a result of conducting the research, I have been

able to obtain a much clearer understanding of the

responsibilities and requirements of sports coaches,

and also learnt to appreciate how much coaches

really do.

FEEDBACK

Upon completion of several training sessions with the Year 8/9 boys, Lachlan Rennie, assistant coach of the team completed a feedback form, which outlines my performance as coach. This will allow me to determine which areas I need improvement within, and provides me with a chance for self analysis. Selected comments within this feedback form are outlined within a table below.

The feedback form Lachlan completed has allowed me to see, from another perspective, the areas in which I excelled in, and those I need improvement within. Working with and having an expert in the field complete a feedback form has been extremely beneficial not only in terms of my assignment, but also for my personal development.

CAPABILITIESUpon the completion of this assessment task, I have been able to successfully developseveral of my capabilities including my critical and creative thinking, personal and social, and ethical understanding capabilities.

Critical & Creative Thinking:Through conducting my research and planning trainings with the year 8/9 team, I wasable to further develop my critical and creative thinking capability. This capabilityrequires individuals to access, organize, use, and evaluate information. Conducting myown research and interpreting this information has allowed me to utilize this capability,in the sense that I have successfully conducted research. This would work in allowing meto gather a wide variety of useful information, to help me present information relevantto my topic in my final assessment. Another aspect of the critical and creative thinkingcapability involves reflecting on, adjusting and explaining thinking. I completed this in thesense that I was able to reflect on the drills I implemented throughout the trainingsessions, and as a result, adjust certain drills to suit the needs of the players. It isimportant for coaches to change drills in order to suit the ability levels of the players, and certain drills can be done which will work to develop certain aspects of the game.

Personal and Social: Considering the fact that team sports are so heavily reliant on the teamwork and relationships formed with others, the personal and social capability is able to be developed. As a coach, forming healthy relationships with players plays a crucial role in the successfulness of the team. As a student, it was easier for me to form bonds/build links with other individuals (players), due to the fact that I was of a similar age range. This allowed me to communicate with each player with ease, which made for smooth running trainings. Links were also made with not only the players who make up the Year 8/9 Team but also including fellow coaches and sporting personnel. Part of the personal and social capability also includes reviewing and planning personal goals. This was worked towards and made more capable in the sense that I was required to create goals in terms of training sessions and final products.
