ALONE, a charitysupporting older people inneed this year celebrated its’ 35th anniversaryand to mark theoccasion InTallaghtMagazine spokewith CEO ofALONE SeanMoynihan. The charity came into existence after a bitterly cold spell in1976 when eight older people were found dead in theirDublin homes within a few weeks of each other.

Willie Bermingham (1942-90) who was then a Dublin fireman, discovered the remains of some of these forgottenolder people and, along with a number of friends, distributed posters to let the public know that many over-60 s in Dublin were suffering cold, hunger, loneliness, depression, illness and isolation.

“Willie Bermingham described graphically the awful scenehe encountered in that chalet on that bitter cold Februaryday. A frail, old man, blind in one eye, lying dead on a wetbed with an old blanket gripped in his left hand, two coldrooms in that timber chalet, no fuel for the fire and no foodin the press and he half naked, stiff in his death sentence, alone and in misery”

Willie and his friends began to collect and distribute dona-tions of food, fuel, clothing and furniture and this led tothem founding ALONE in 1977.

The name was chosen as an acronym of the words; A LittleOffering Never Ends. The organisation neither seeks nor receives any government funding. ALONE values this independence as it leaves them free to act without delayto help older people in crisis.

Now in their 35th year of providing friendship, housing andsupport to isolated older people Chief Executive Sean explained how ALONE operate:

“We have three main services for older people. The volunteer befriending service provides companionship to

over 200 older people each week that would otherwisebe lonely and isolated. We also run a number of socialevents throughout the year.

“Our housing support service provides 100 homes for lifefor older people who were homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Each person is encouraged and supported to live independently for as long as possible.

“Our community response service responds to requestsfrom older people that are in emergency situations or suffering from hardship; providing them with supportacross a wide range of issues including financial, housing, personal safety, medical and basic provisions.”

Sean said that he wanted older people in Tallaght to beaware of what the charity can offer them, if needed.

“I was checking the database earlier and I noticed we havequite a low number of people from Tallaght being referredto us or availing of our services. We want to let people inthe area know that we are there for anyone who mayneed any of our services.

“We are also always looking for volunteers with certainspecialist skills so if any of your readers would be interested we would love them to get in touch with us.”

As more and more older people contact ALONE for support, the organisation remains determined to respondto their needs with the continued support of the public.

If you or someone you know needs a helpinghand, or if you can volunteer your time, or canmake a donation to ensure ALONE’s vital services continue please phone 01 679 1039 orvisit www.alone.ie for more information.

Since winning the So You Think You’re Funny?talent contest in Edinburgh in1996, Jason has built a hugelysuccessful career as a standup. He has also turned his hand to acting, TV and radio work winning awards and accoladeswith his brand of zany, madcap comedy. His original way of looking at the world, combined with his talent for playing off whatever the audience throws at him have ledto him being billed as the “biggest selling comedian in Edinburgh”. With a growing international profile, Jason has performed in New York, Boston, Hong Kong, Singapore,Brussels, Milan, Paris and Australia.

InTallaght Magazine caught up with Jason while he was on his way to a gig in Manchesterand had a great chat about his career, his inspiration and the difference between crowdsin Britain and Ireland. In between changing trains and being thrown out of a carriagefor talking on his phone, Jason let us in on what fans can expect from his latest show…

You’re bringing your new showThe People’s Puppeteer to theCivic Theatre in December, what can the audience expect?Firstly let me say I’ll be elated to be back in Ireland gigging. I’m constantly on planes trainsand automobiles so it’ll be great to bring this show back from the UK. Every show I do Ialways get them up to do something with me so it's like I control them. That's where itcame from, so I can keep me jacket and me old hat. But yeah, I'm definitely excited aboutit. It's going to be nuts. To get a feel readers can check out Jason Byrne Special ITV clipson YouTube, it’s just mayhem. It’s like I’ve got a big pot and the audience and I’m going toput them all in it and add a bit of sparkle of Christmas.

It’ll be great to be back in Dublin because at the moment I’m touring the UK, playing inplaces like Northampton, Manchester, Liverpool, Plymouth and I don’t know those placestoo well so I have to read up on them, which I won’t have to do in Tallaght! I’m really looking forward to it, it’s going to be full on madness.

Have you played in Tallaght before?Years ago yeah. I was booked to do a gig in the college (IT Tallaght) then I get down thereand they bring me to this f***in’ bar and told me I had to do the gig there, I said I’m f***in’not doing it there! I told them I’m never going back there again! No I’m really lookingforward to going back and I love that it’s a theatre show as I feel my shows are muchbetter in a theatre. It’s going to be great craic.

You’re currently touring the UK h ow’s it going and howhave the crowds responded? It’s been great. The British are brilliant, it’s easy enough to gig there. They laugh, they’re mental. In Ireland everyone is a comedian. Their attitude to comedians is “I’m notpaying into this sh*t, sure I’ve loads a stories, what do I want to be paying to hear someoneelse’s stories!”

Comedy wise how do Ireland and Britain differ? Well comedy was invented in Britain; they have this amazing comedy history from theGoons in the 50’s to Monthy Python and comedy clubs whereas we were way behindthem. We had cabaret. A lot of Irish people think “Ah the English are bleeding borin’ andall!” Actually I better be careful I’m on the phone here to you standing on a train platformin England, people could get the wrong idea! (Laughs)

You’ve done stand up, radio, and television, how do they compare? Well radio is a great discipline, I love it as you have to try and keep it together. Live stand upI love obviously, you get to edit yourself. TV is probably the worst ‘cause they edit the sh*tout of you! I did the Graham Norton show recently and it went really well, I was on for ages. Then after they were done editing it I was only on for 5 mins! It was “Here’s Jason Byrne..andnow please welcome Lady Gaga!” Live TV is good though.

A lot of what you do seemsimprovised on the spot... is it?

No f***in’ way! At a gig recently a guy up on the stage saw my set list, he says “I thought you made this shit up?!” - No I don’t! 80% of it is prepared, only the stuff with theaudience, the interacting is improvised. I’d freak out if I didn’t have it planned. What am Igoing to talk about!

You’ve done shows all over the world, where is your favorite place to play? Australia. Without a f***in’ doubt! It's a place that I love going to. It's holidays, there's noother way of looking at it. I’m going there to do three shows at the end of December in Melbourne, I'm actually really looking forward to it, it's the only place I actually look forwardto gigging. Australia is just beautiful, the heat, the culture, the fans. In Australia I end up skipping to the gigs!

What are the audiences like there? The crowds are f***in’ brilliant! They’re like the Irish crowds except they do what they’re told!If you ask them to do something they just do it, no questions no problems. In Ireland theaudiences are like “F**k off I’m not doing that you spa!” I also love playing in New Zealand, the relationship between the Kiwis and the Aussies is like us and the English. We take thepiss out of the English but the English don’t care at all, they’re all like “Oh I’d love to go to Ireland.” The Kiwis do that to the Aussies.

How do you go about writing your material? I always bring an idea on to the stage. I’ll get props in a shop - like recently I bought a giantpeg – and then bring those to the stage so I can come up with a short story on stage. I’ve found there’s no point writing a big show at home and trying it out on myself. Peoplewill just think “Oh that’s not funny.” I write everything depending on reaction, over 2 or 3nights, what people laugh at I’ll keep. It all starts small. Also anything that happens to me,stuff in the news etc. Comics have cartoon heads! Comics see the world in cartoon form. It’s a weird world!

Your wife seems to provide you with a lot of material, does she mind you quoting her in your shows? No not at all. My wife on stage is not my real wife. Of course it’s all exaggerated, she’ll be like“I never said that!” Though she did actually really provide a line I use that I love. After I’d justtold her I’d won an award she said “Why don’t you ring your mother, she might lick your assfor 5 minutes!”

When you were young did youalways want to be a comedian? No! It’s a total myth, every comedian falls into it. I saw Billy Connelly do stand up when I wasabout 16 or 17 and I remember thinking “I could never do that.”

So how did you end up becoming a comedian? In the International Bar one night a friend of mine went up to Barry Murphy and said “My friend really wants to be a comedian” and I was like “No I don’t!” So Barry says to me “I’ll put you down for six gigs.” So I did my first gig with all my mates there and they alllaughed. The following week there were none of my mates there and nobody laughed.

Do you still get nervous before gigs?Yeah I still get nervous! Two hours on your own on stage is a long two hours if it doesn’t work out. Doing comedy looks easy but it’s not, it’s a full-on experience. I get nervous about everything, I’m nervous right now about this train being on time! I’m a very highly-strung person.

You have two sons, would you like them to follow their Dad into comedy? No not at all! I wouldn’t mind them doing acting. They’re going to be kicked into college! After the Leaving Cert everyone should go to college. I never got a chance to go myself. Hopefully if one of them is a doctor my dream is to walk up the corridor to their surgery, in afull clown costume and say to the receptionist “I’m here to see my son the doctor.”

17

InTallaght_Edition26_PRINT_ED_Layout 1 21/11/2012 22:10 Page 17

What do they thinkof your shows? They never get to see them as they’re too young! One is 12and the other is 5. Standup is not for under 18’s. I think it’shilarious when people get offended, what are you doingtaking your child to a stand up show ya mickey! They see afew clips of me on TV that’s about it.

Who inspired you? It’s complicated. No one person in particular. I watched comedy all my life. All the comedy from the 70’, 80’s and 90’sinspired me really. People like Spike Milligan, Tommy Cooper,Billy Connelly, all the British TV. I got my knowledge from them.

Who would you love to work with, living or dead? I’d love to do a movie with any of the classic actors. Someonelike De Niro, Pacino or Hoffman. I think it would be so coolacting opposite them, to hear them deliver their lines wouldbe amazing.

Finally what advicewould you have forany young peoplewho want to getinto comedy? Make sure you always do your gig for the audience and notfor other comics. Other comics don’t pay your wages, the audience do. I’ve seen it happen, I won’t name any names,of comedians trying to be quirky and fun, and other comicsthinking it was hilarious and the crowd not finding it funny at all.

Jason plays The Civic Theatre on Wednesday December 12 at 8.00pm. Tickets are priced at€20 and are available to book online on The CivicTheatre’s website: www.civictheatre.ie or in person from their box office.

The crowds aregetting bigger and the feedback has been good. A big break for us was when Al Gibbs featured us as the on his show on FM 104 Freeks on Friday, we were the House Tune OfThe Week.

What can people expect if theycome to see you lads? Anto – Not your usual normal shite chart music! We play all kinds of House, the rangebroadens from techno, prog, trance etc. We perform differently to a lot of other djs; anyonewho sees us will notice the difference. We kit the club out with banners, we wear hoodiesand masks and we have promo girls, with beer bongs and stuff out in the crowd interactingwith the people. We put on a great show and we make sure we get the crowd involved.

Who has influenced you? Anto – All the Ibiza djs like Karl Cox, Steve Lawlor, Pasha regulars. I’ve been over there andthat’s where I’d love for us to play in the future. For a dj Ibiza is like what Wembley is like to afootballer. Everyone wants to play there.

What are your plans for the next year?Kev – We’d be looking to break into festivals. We were knocking on the door this summer butit was just a little to early for us, we weren’t established enough. We also plan to hopefully getbigger and better, get our name out there, make our own tunes, make a few beats. We wantto give a lot back to all the people who’ve been there for us.

What do you think of the Irish dance music scene at the moment?Lee – It’s coming around full circle, it’s got a second lease of life. It tailed off a bit at the end ofthe 90’s and a lot of RnB came in then but now it’s on the way back. There’s a growing under-ground scene in Dublin now with a lot of people doing good stuff.

What did you think of the coverage of Dance music in the media following theSwedish House Mafia gig in the Phoenix Park? Anto - The coverage was wrong, it was just a bad mix of all the acts on the day. I was thereand left after 45 minutes as it didn’t feel safe. But to blame dance music is all wrong. If you goanywhere in Europe, any festival in any city involving House music there’s no trouble at all, nothing like what went on in the Phoenix Park. Over here some dance music is a bit of a magnetfor scumbags.

Any final words to sum up your 1st year? Kev- We just want to thank everyone who has helped us along the way. Seeing people queingup to come and see you play is a great feeling, thanks to everyone who’s been to our shows. We also want to thank our families and girlfriends, who are the promo girls and are just as im-portant as the music. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for upcoming events, competitions& photos from our gigs. See you on the Dance floor!

Jacob Lights up the Square.Jacobs’ Journey continued last week and flanked byhis cousin Moo-Moo he had the honor of lighting upthe Square and welcoming Santa to Tallaght. Therewas Fireworks, Cheeky Monkey and a host of othercharacters on hand to welcome Santa but Jacob thefirst recipient of The Squares Little Stars award stolethe show!

Jacobs Mammy Lynne who was with him on the bignight was delighted that Jacob’s bravery wasrewarded by the Square who have commissionedthe Little Stars award to reward the bravery andoutstanding achievements of young people in theTallaght area.

There were fireworks and Christmas lights galore inthe Square last Thursday night but nothing shone sobright as Jacob’s smile.

A record crowd of approx 7000 turnedup to welcome Santato The Square onThursday 15 November.Making his way from the North Pole straight to Tallaghtto say hello to all the boys and girls, he was ably assistedby his elves and other costume characters. An amazingdisplay of fireworks greeted his arrival as local peoplecame in force to kick off the Festive Season.

Upon arrival Santa said a few words about how happyhe was to be in The Square and to see so many peopleturn up to see him.

After his speech Santa, accompanied by Jack Frost andfriends, made his way to the Centre Mall followed by hiselves and thousands of spectators through the eastentrance up to where the Christmas Tree is located.

Santa took to the stage beside the tree and called uponJacob Keenan our first Little Star, to turn on the Christmaslights.

When the Christmas Lights were duly turned on thecrowd erupted with a massive cheer.

An enchanting array of lights lit up the centre and every-one that was there knew that Christmas had arrived atthe Square. As the crowd looked on in awe Santa wentinto a curtain box on stage and suddenly reappearedfrom a gift wrapped box above the centre stage as confettifilled the air and fell down onto to the crowd below.

Santa then made his way to his Grotto where a largequeue had already formed to greet him, as he openedthe doors dry ice floated out amongst everyones feetand a winter wonderland was revealed.

Santa will be here at the Square until Christmas evemake sure you pop into to see him in his amazing grotto.

Latest Green Dayalbum harks back tothe band’s glory daysThe second album in Green Day‘s current trilogy of releases,¡Dos! begins with ambient background noise and strikingmuffled guitar strings before launching into the minute-long opening track, See You Tonight. It’s a quickly forgottenbit that only lasts a couple of seconds, but it sets the tonefor what’s to come on the rest of the album.

In contrast to the teenage anthems that filled ¡Uno! the firstalbum of the trilogy, on ¡Dos! the band get back to the retro-rock that served them so well in the past and the record isfilled with moving bass lines and catchy melodies.

Not that ¡Dos! is rocket science. It's just way more impressivethan the dull sounds of ¡Uno! Songs such as Wild One areimmediately hummable, basic rock delivered well. Armstrong's guitar solo is loose and wobbly, and the moansof "... wild one" glow in the background.

The maddest track on the album is Nightlife a funky, raptrack with reggae guitar and a funky bassline. It’s definitelyone of the weirdest songs the band has ever recorded. GreenDay does Rap!

There are quite a lot of forgettable tracks on ¡Dos! thatthankfully fly by unnoticed. Ashley shines in parts, but runsof out of gas half way through, to finish on a whimper andfades away.

The final song of the albums thirteen tracks is a Billie Joe Armstrong solo number. Called Amy, it’s a tribute to AmyWinehouse and paints the image of a woman misunderstood, out of time and place, revolving around thechorus, “Amy don’t you go / I want you around / singin’, wowplease don’t go / do you want to be a friend of mine?”

It’s not a great album, but it’s fun and kind of reminds whatGreen Day used to be. ¡Dos! provides hope that the ¡Uno!¡Dos! ¡Tre! series may end well, largely thanks to the record’sstrongest tracks like Stray Heart, Wild One and Lazy Bone, which propels the listener back to the era of Dookie andNimrod.

I’ve been a massive fan of Two Door Cinema Club sinceI first got my hands on their debut album at the startof last year but the release of the band’s sophomorealbum, Beacon in September evaded my notice until afew weeks ago when I heard Sun on the radio.

There’s something a little bit different about Sun thatcaught my ear and before I recognised Alex Trimble’sdistincitve light Northern twang, I made a mental noteto look up who sang this catchy little number, it mightbe worth seeing if they have an album. Despite feelinga little silly when I realised my mistake, it’s indicitave of howmuch of a departure this is from their previous output.

Sun starts gently with Trimble crooning over piano butbursts into a memorable riff, catchy chorus and hornsblasting rhythmically in the background. It’s quite asummery track, which easily gets stuck in your head.

The whole album was produced by Jacknife Lee, whohas previously worked with U2, REM and Snow Patrol.Whether it’s Lee’s influence or a natural progression, I love the direction Two Door Cinema Club are moving.

The future seemssunny indeed forthese Northern lads

Microsoft straps atablet operating system to Windows 8. Should enthusiastsmake the big upgrade?Windows 8 is not a want, it’s a necessity. Not for you, theconsumer. For Microsoft.

Microsoft’s decision—and need—to unify a single userexperience across its entire product line is the real reasonwhy Windows 8 looks and feels like a tablet operatingsystem slapped on top of Windows 7 (with a few tweakshere and there). Users are given no way around it—Microsoft has made sure of that fact. And, in many ways, there’s no way around it for Microsoft, either.

The company has decided that users cannot have dissimilar Windows experiences across desktops, tablets, smartphones, or any other kooky gadgets on the horizon, but refuses (or can’t) cut the cord of the traditional desktop experience just yet.

Windows 8 is the natural, necessary hybrid—the lasttime you’re likely to see the “core” Windows experienceof the last decade mashed together with the multicol-ored, touch-sensitive, “Metro” boxes of the future. A wordon that: While Microsoft has elected to not call the tablet-ized portion of Windows 8’s user interfaceMetro—it’s now just called “Windows 8,” we think—we’ll keep using the old nomenclature just to make thisreview easier to process.

We never thought we’d type thewords, “Microsoft has made it easy to installWindows,” but there you have it. Your first introductioninto Microsoft’s latest iteration of Windows comes fromthe previously laborious process of blanking your harddrive and playing the company’s equivalent of 20 questions to install an OS.

When Windows 8 says, “Your PC will be ready in just amoment,” it’s not kidding. This is the speediest, most annoyance-free OS installation we’ve ever experienced.

Up pops Metro, the tiled-box screen that’s easily Windows8’s most controversial feature. To discuss the strengths, weaknesses, and intricacies of Metro alone could eat upan entire multipage review. So we’ll lead with the biggie:At its core, Metro feels… undone. To put it another way,Microsoft’s treatment of its tiles, Metro’s interactions withthe “normal” half of Windows 8, and the lack of customization present in this Hyde to Windows 7’s Jekylldoes a disservice to those who want anything beyondan operating system set in “easy mode.”

It’s possible to think of Metro as simply a start menu—which it basically is, given that Microsoft has killed thetraditional Start Menu in Windows 8’s desktop mode.Just ignore all the live tiles and downloadable apps anduse the blocky UI as a souped-up entry to your desktop.

The single-app, full-screen Metro environment takessome getting used to. Truly, your capacity to enjoy Microsoft’s tablet treatment depends on the app: The People app is as pointless as it is cluttered. Other apps, like Weather and Maps, deliver a compelling experiencewithin Metro. Games—and the downloadable XboxSmartglass app—finally tie together one’s PC and one’sXbox 360 in a better, but not ideal, fashion. News, thoughstill annoyingly stuck to a horizontal plane, looks as wonderful as its companion app Sports.

Mail, however, is downright laughable—especiallywhen free alternatives like Mozilla’s Thunderbird, theweb-based Gmail, or Microsoft’s own Outlook applicationblow its lackluster capabilities out of the water.

The strength of Windows’ apps—both third-party andMicrosoft-driven—are going to be the make-or-breakelements for Metro. At launch, and especially on a single-screen setup, they are more novelty than necessity.

Considering that a copy of Windows 7 Home Premiumcosts over €90, we think it’s completely fitting that astandard Windows 8 upgrade costs €30: Metro’s worthcan be counted on one hand for a typical desktop user, but the improvements found across the “Windows 7” version of the OS are certainly worth paying for.

The year's most anticipated shooter is back and does not disappoint. You play mainly as Alex Mason and his son David Mason. You jump between time zones of the 1970's and 80's as Alex, and as David youplay in the year 2025. I wasn't expecting much with this title, just another generic Call of Duty game but I have to admit I was really surprised. It's good, the changing story kept me interested in it.

For the first time ever you are given more control over what way the storychanges. There aren’t big changes in the game but for the COD series it'sa massive step in the right direction. In key points throughout the gameyou get to decide and sometimes I was conflicted about what to do, doI kill this person or let them go?A lot of the time the good guy in me wonand wouldn't let me pull the trigger to kill but just to injure. Also if I failedsome objectives other missions would open up that would give me another chance to fix what I messed up.

Another massive change to the game that I really loved was that you gotto choose what weapon loadout you get. I always wanted this feature inCOD and I felt it really did add to it. You unlock more weapons the moreyou play and objectives you complete.

The multiplayer has also changed for the better. If you're not one of thosecyber robot warriors who just murder everyone else on COD multiplayeryou'll be happy to know that there is now a league where you are pittedagainst people of your own skill level.

The zombie mode has been improved and now offers a storyline instead of just trying tostay alive for as long as you can. This makes the game far more interesting and gives yousomething more to fight for. You can now play with up to eight other people online and upto four players offline.

For me Black Ops 2was a surprise because it stepped away from the railroad gameplay andlet you have more choice over it all. If Call of Duty sticks to this they will have a future insteadof people refusing to continue to buy their new titles.

For those of you who want to know where all the changes are and what they do you canfind them on my blog: www.keithcashin.com

The Skoda Rapid isaimed at family motorists looking for a quality car at an affordable price.Sitting between the Fabia and Octavia in the brand's line-up, it is much closer in size to the larger of those twocars; in fact, it's 30cm longer than a Volkswagen Golf.

What might also surprise you is that, although the Rapidlooks like a saloon, it's actually a hatchback, with theemphasis on space as much as it is on low prices.

There are four petrol engines to choose from: a 1.2 with74bhp, a turbocharged 1.2 with 85bhp or 104bhp, plusa 120bhp turbocharged 1.4. The only diesel engine atlaunch is a 104bhp 1.6 TDI.

Whichever engine is under the bonnet, the Rapid feelsreasonably sure-footed, but it doesn't have the agility ofa Ford Focus or VW Golf – hardly surprising given thatit's a considerably bigger car. The back end can feel ratherlight under hard braking and the Rapid is reluctant toturn into tight corners. The front tyres squeal surprisinglyearly, too, but body roll is well controlled.

The downside is that this control has been achieved byrelatively firm suspension settings, and the ride on Irishroads is a little unsettled.

Still, the light steering and good visibility to the side andfront (if not the rear, where the high bootlid restricts your

view) make it easy to manoeuvre, and the Rapid sits securely on the motorway. Only the relatively large amountof wind noise disturbs your otherwise calm progress.

It's inside where Skoda's cost-conscious development ismost obvious – the simple appearance and back-to-ba-sics nature of the cabin see to that.

However, what the cabin also demonstrates is thatthere's a difference between being cost-conscious andfeeling cheap, because – despite the wide use of hardblack plastic, occasionally flimsy/flexible materials andodds and sods from other VW Group models – the lastthing the Rapid looks and feels is cheap.

In fact, if you avoid the all-black interior and choose somecontrasting colours on the dashboard and doors, thecabin is a smart, classy space. There's certainly no faultingthe layout of the controls, the amount of stowage upfront or the fine driving position, which is achieved bycombining a reach- and rake-adjustable steering wheelwith generous head- and legroom.

Prices for the Skoda Rapid start from €15,995 and thenew model is available to test drive at your local dealer.

Spotify Launced in IrelandSpotify, the fabled Swedish music streaming service thatwe've been hearing such good things about for the last fewyears, is now finally available in Ireland. The service offersdigitally restricted streaming of selected music from a rangeof major and independent record labels, including Sony, EMI,Warner Music Group and Universal. In essence it gives you"on demand" access to over 18 million songs.

The service comes in three packages: Free, "Premium" and"Unlimited". These range from being able to listen to 10hours a month, on your computer, to unlimited streamingof music, with no adver-tisements and being ableto listen on your mobilephone.

Founded in 2006 byStockholm native DanielEk and Martin Lorentzon(pictured above), Spotifywas recently valued at$3bn (€2.3bn), the WallStreet Journal reported.Last year it raised $100mfrom venture capitalistsand is now raising a further $100m from several investors, includingthe investment bankGoldman Sachs.

It claims 15 million active users worldwide and four millionpaid subscribers and has been praised by bands, includingour own U2, for finding a way to provide free music to userswhile at the same time, generating income for artists whohave lost out immeasurably since Napster began offeringshared music for free more than a decade ago.

Thus far in the UK, where Spotify has been available for fouryears, it has not impacted on advertising at other musicservices such as commercial radio. Spotify, which claims ithas created its own market, says it had no immediate plansto locate any staff here in Ireland.

Eircom offers a similar free service to it broadband customersthrough the Eircom Music hub, while French based serviceDeezer has 15 million tracks to offer users.

The sales information that advertisers receive is anonymous, said Baser. "You would see the number ofpeople who bought shoes," he said, using the exampleof an online shoe retailer. But marketers would not beable to get information that could identify the people, he added.

The conversion tool is specifically designed for so-calleddirect response marketers, such as online retailers andtravel websites that advertise with the goal of drummingup immediate sales rather than for longer-term brand-building.

The original vampire, but was he the best?I’ve been meaning to read more of the classics and have recently discovered Project Gutenburg which offers over40,000 free ebooks. Have a look at www.gutenberg.orgfor more details. Most of their titles have gone out of copyright, which is why they can offer them free.

I started reading Dracula during Halloween week, after seeing all the posters for the inaugural Bram Stoker festivalthat took place in Dublin from the 26th - 28th October. Therewere walking tours, literary workshops and Stoker-themedtheatre. Since I’ve now read the book it’s all based upon, I’msorry I missed all the fun.

While Dracula seemed a particularly relevant read duringthe Halloween season, it’s an iconic gothic novel that can beread at any time of year. It’s a very old book, having beenwritten in 1897 and I’ve been aware of it most of my adultlife but had never read it.

Bram Stoker didn’t invent the vampire but he defined itsmodern form and his Count Dracula became a touchstonefor all future myths and legends of blood sucking monstersin popular culture. In fact, with over 170 versions to date,Dracula has been the subject of more films than any otherfictional character.

Before writing Dracula, Stoker met Ármin Vámbéry whowas a Hungarian writer and traveler. Dracula likely emergedfrom Vámbéry's dark stories of the Carpathian mountains.Stoker then spent several years researching European folklore and mythological stories of vampires.

I loved Buffy The Vampire Slayer when I was a teenager andam quite partial to True Blood these days, so I was morethan familiar with the concept of vampires and the lore that surrounds them. All the usual tropes are in evidence; vampires suck the blood of innocents in order to sustainthemselves, but also to gain mastery over their unsuspectingvictims.

They hate garlic and are repelled by holy water, crucifixesand the Eucharistic host. The only way to kill Count Draculais with a stake through the heart. He is strongest at night, though in the novel he isn’t killed by sunlight, just weakenedand unable to change into his other forms of a bat, a dogand even mist.

The novel is told in epistolary format, which is a series of letters, diary entries, and ships’ logs entries. As the story progresses, all the characters are reading each others entriesand are working together to try and defeat the Count.

The tale begins with Jonathan Harker, a newly qualifiedEnglish solicitor, journeying by train and carriage fromEngland to Count Dracula's crumbling, remote castle(situated in the Carpathian Mountains on the borderof Transylvania, Bukovina, and Moldavia). The purposeof his mission is to provide legal support to Dracula, who wants to relocate to London. Jonathan is held hostagein the castle after he realises the nature of the Count, so weare aware of what Dracula is from quite early on.

The rest of the story traces Dracula’s passage to England andhow it impinges on the lives of two English women, LucyWesterna and Mina Murray that he comes into contact withon the way to London. Mina is Jonathan’s betrothed and theother 3 main characters, Seward, Morris and Lord Godalmin)are all in love with Lucy.

Once it becomes clear that the group is up against something out of the ordinary and possibly supernatural, Dr Seward calls in his old teacher Professor Abraham VanHelsing from Amsterdam.

Van Helsing’s sections are intentionally written with clumsygrammar and some peculiar turns of phrase, which I suppose adds to the feeling of otherness that his foreignroots afford him and his theories. This and the long passagesdedicated to extolling each others virtues and how closeand special they each were to the other got on my nervesby the end of the book.

There are two heroines in this book both of whom at firstseem like wilting damsels in distress. When Mina shows herself to be useful and competent, it illicts remarks aboutthis being unexpected of the fairer sex. This irked the feminist in me but can probably be attributed to the age inwhich it was written.

The overt religiosity of the Good (Christianity) versus Evil(Godless Undead) also annoyed me but is probably unavoidable, due to the superstitious roots of the legend.Dracula even travels under the pseudonym Count de Ville, and has a natural aversion to anything holy. While well mannered, gentle and innocent ‘ladies’ are reverred in thisbook, anything outside that is seen as being evil. The waythe women were expected to be so pure and angelic, whilethe vampire women were so wanton and sexual struck meas rather too moralistic for my liking. Stoker was raised aProtestant and clearly believed in the teachings of his church.

Parts of the novel dragged rather and I’m not sure I’d botherreading anything else by Stoker but it was an interestingexperience to go back to where all this vampire maniastarted. Dracula has endured for a reason and I’d recommend reading the original to see where it all began.

About The AuthorAbraham "Bram" Stoker was an Irish novelist , born in 1847and died in 1912. He was born in Clontarf and attended Trinity College, where he studied Mathematics. He workedas a civil servant in Dublin before marrying Oscar Wilde'sformer suitor Florence Balcombe in 1878. The Stokers thenmoved to London where he worked as PA of actor HenryIrving and as business manager of the Lyceum Theatre.

My sister wears red lipstick constantly but doesn't wear anyother makeup - she's too palenot to if she wants the lipstick, what's the best foundation tocompliment this colour?Niamh, Firhouse

Hi Sinead, wearing red lipstick can make a real statement and it can look great on every skin, pale or dark it’s just about picking the rightcolour for your skin tone and the bestway to do this is to try them on.

When choosing your foundation Iwould always suggest that you goas close to your natural skin colouras possible (or tan colour). In myopinion if I was wearing a mattered lip stick I would prefer a morefull coverage foundation whichwould give you a flawless look. Onthe other hand if you are wearinga red lipstick which is more like awash of colour on the lips then alight coverage foundation could look great.

My skin is very greasy, how can Itake the shiny look off my makeup?Alison, Churchtown

Hi Alison, powder, powder, powder. When you have oily skin you definitely have to use a pow-der over your foundation to set it. Firstly it will last longer and secondly it will take away theshine. There are many powders on the market and some will give you extra coverage whileothers will just take away your shine. Along with using a powder you can also use productlike primers and oil control lotions which will also help to balance the oil production in yourskin.

When you first walk into a garden centre all the plants maylook healthy and good quality, but this isn’t always the case. You may end being disappointed by the end result if youchoose one that is not so healthy, you may also bring someunwanted diseases back to your other garden plants andyour soil. So you need to take a few steps to help make surethe plants you buy are healthy and just right for putting inyour garden.

The first thing you should do is examine the overall qualityof the garden centre or nursery. Are all the plants beingwell cared for and healthy? Do the staff understand howto care for the plants? Will they be able to give you properadvice for their care and up-keep? All of these things willhelp you find out if it is a good place to buy your plantsfrom.

Take a look at the foliage of the plants for sale, if you find aplant you are intent on buying, make sure the leaves aregreen and shiny. If a lot of leaves are yellowing or wilting,it would be best to leave it where it is. These plants maynot be diseased but the wilting and yellow colour may bea sign that the plant is stressed, but if you have good gardening skills, you might take a chance if it is for sale fora very good price.

Check the plants for any signs of insects and diseases, checkthe top and underside of the leaves, and the compost inthe pot. If you see any darkened areas spots or holes theplant may be infected. A sticky feeling on the leaves or onthe soil can be from aphids.

Look out for Vine Weevil, the Vine Weevil is a pest of manygarden plants. All vine weevils are female and each can layup to 1,000 eggs during the summer. The larvae are stout, creamy white, legless grubs with brown heads; their bodiesare slightly curved and up to 10mm long. They feed on theroots of many plants and the tubers of plants such as cyclamen and begonia. Plants growing in pots, windowboxes or other containers are particularly at risk and maybe killed during autumn-spring.

The adult weevil is black with fused wing covers, and is unable to fly. Adults feed at night on the outer edges ofleaves, causing the leaves to have a notched margin. Grubslive below the soil surface, and feed on the roots of plants, shrubs and trees. The grubs may kill the roots of almost anyyoung plant in a container. They are especially fond of primulas and cyclamen.

Look at the overall shape. A compact plant that is full andhas multiple stems is usually better than a leggy plant. Infact a leggy plant can often be a sign that the plant has notbeen getting enough light and if so it will grow to be thinand weak and will break easily.

It is most important not to buy root bound plants whenever possible as being root bound is stressful on theplant and your pocket. Of course it is hard to tell if a plant isroot bound without looking inside a pot, but you can look

for roots growing out of the bottom of the pot or roots thathave grown to the top of the pot. Both are definite signsthat the plant is root bound. On the other hand you mayfind a plant that easily lifts out of the pot and has no signsof roots. This may point out that the plant was just recentlypotted up so maybe buy another one instead.

The stem of the plant is another essential area to check. If the plant you are looking at is thick or woody, check forcracks or scars from previous breaks. Prior damage to thestems may still cause problems later so if damaged bestleft alone.

You should look for weeds growing in the pot with theplant you want to buy. If you see weeds in the pot they area sure sign that the plant has been neglected by the grower. It also can be weak and unhealthy and you also do notwant to bring new weeds home with you when you buynew plants.

Toning exercises are physical exercises that are used with the aim of developing aphysique with a large emphasis on musculature. In this context, the term toned impliesleanness in the body (low levels of body fat), noticeable muscle definition and shape, but not significant muscle size ("bulk").

Weight loss, in the context of medicine, health or physical fitness, is a reduction of thetotal body mass, due to a mean loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue and/or lean mass, namely bones mineral deposits, muscle, tendon and other connective tissue. ThanksWikipedia

So I’m going to cut to the chase here, most of us humans want to carry less fat aroundand we get this extra fat simple through eating the wrong foods amongst other things.And for those of you trying to tone up which means reduce body fat which is what mostof us want here’s a few tips on how not to do it;

1. Eat a Vegan/vegetarian Diet – If you don’t want to eat any meat, your bodywill just eat you instead. And you can end up ‘skinny fat’

2. Do lots of cardio – Training your body to be catabolic, breaking downmuscle and to store fat is great if you want that “I used to be 30 stone untilI got sick” look.

3. Go on a low calorie starvation diet – It’s like paying for the experience of aprison camp without making any new undesirable friends.

4. Join weight watchers/slimming world – Obviously the only point thesepeople haven’t gotten is that if you want to be healthy you should eat ahealthy diet and exercise. Is there an app for that?

5. Take a spin class – Did you know spinning classes actually increase lowerbody fat. Do enough of them and you might slim your waist after you havecompletely fried your adrenals, but by then you will be sports some majorcottage cheese thighs.

6. Never pick up a weight ever – I’m serious, it will make you so huge you willhave to walk sideways through the Square. Ok not really, but you knowthat age Old Testament, if you don’t use it you lose it. Well it’s prettyaccurate when it comes to muscle tissue.

7. Skip meals – Skipping meals is like training for fat storage. The more yougo without proper nutrition the more you tell your body to store fat forthese long breaks.

8. Eat lots of Gluten/Grains – Nothing says lose muscle and store fat like ahighly inflammatory food that depletes your body of vital nutrients anddamages your digestive tract making it harder for you to get nutrientsfrom the rest of your diet.

Well there you have it, lose weight and get Skinny Fat or Eat right, lift weights, skip theCardio, reduce body fat AKA Tone Up!

Toning As Opposed To Losing Weight
