Hi everyone,Welcome to your late September edition of InTallaght.

It's been a busy couple of weeks with some erraticweather for the kids' return to school. The Junior Certresults have been and gone and everyone is settlingback into college after a summer of fun. Next thingwe know it will be Halloween and not long afterChristmas....yes I said it Christmas!!

In the meantime however we have been busyworking on more fantatsic content for you to get stuckinto over the next two weeks.

This issue we speak to up-and-coming model andaspiring TV presenter Niamh Cullen. Former MissSunday World, Niamh went on to place in the topseven of the Miss Ireland contest last year, she workswith Off The Rails’ star Brendan Courtney and has justlanded a job as hostess in Jamie Oliver’s swish newDundrum restaurant. Niamh is a lovely girl whosework ethic alone will see her go far. Watch this space!

In other news we speak to The Aluskas. We recentlyreviewed the band’s album and caught up with theguys who filled us in on the past, present and futureplans for the group.

Our fundraising drive for little Jacob Keenan has cometo a close this month and we are thrilled to say thatwe have made above and beyond what we expectedbecause thanks to our very generous friends at theSquare who, touched by Jacob's story, donated€1,000 which helped us break our original target of€2,000 and raise a whopping €2,539!! A big thankyou to everyone who took out an advert, the full pro-ceeds of which went towards the Jacob’s aftercare.

In a career which spanned almost 20 years, Laws made over100 appearances for Burnley, Middlesbrough and Notting-ham Forest. He returned to Burnley as manager in January 2010 but wasunable to keep the Clarets in the Premier League and wassacked in December 2010 after a disappointing start to theirfirst season back in the Championship.

Speaking of his new task at the Hoops, Laws said: “I amdelighted to be joining Shamrock Rovers and look forwardto working with the chairman, board of directors, players, staff and supporters to move the club forward into a new era.

She then went on to win Miss Sunday World after which she became one of the top seven contestants in the Miss Ireland competition. So determined is Niamh to reach her goals that she not only models with Assets she internswith Off The Rails star Brendan Courtney , works for make-up company Character Beauty andhas also landed a job as hostess in Jamie Oliver’s new Dundrum restaurant which opens thismonth.

Editor, Emer Mulvaney caught up with Niamh who spoke of her hectic work schedule, thereality programme she will soon start filming – which is a world away from Tallafornia – andthe plans she has to work her way up to her dream job as a TV presenter.

Tell us a bit aboutyourself Niamh.Well I’m 20 years old, I’m from Kingswood and I went to StPaul’s in Greenhills.

You’re a model now– how did you getinto that?I used to do it when I was younger. I actually did a DunnesStores campaign when I was 10. Then I didn’t do much foryears but my friends were always saying ‘you should go forit’ and it was them who really pressured me into doing MissSunday World, which I won. It was crazy really because Ifinally entered but didn’t think I’d get anywhere so I didn’ttell anyone at all, not even my boyfriend, and when I wonAmanda Brunker asked me onstage ‘who is here to supportyou?’ and I had to say ‘noone, I didn’t tell anyone because Ididn’t think this would happen!’

Was that your first break into it?I had gone on Take Me Out before that. I was actually work-ing behind the scenes and the cameraman was saying ‘youshould go on there you’d be so funny’ and I ended up goingon and I got noticed for a couple of things [modelling jobs].

The young Tallaght woman, who first came to public attention when she modeled for Dunnes Stores at the age of 10 was propelled into the limelight when she became a contestant on the Irish version of Take Me Out.

Page 14: InTallaght EDITION 22

So where has the jobtaken you since –what else have youdone?I’ve done seven magazine covers for the Sunday World. I alsogot an internship with Brendan Courtney on Off The Rails, which is fantastic, and I am learning a lot. It isn’t all fashionand fun though it’s hard work and he did warn me aboutthat but I am happy to work hard.

You start workingfor Jamie Oliver soonis that right?Yes, well his new restaurant opens this month, I’ve actuallyjust come from training there. I will be working as a hostesswhere my job will be to greet customers when they comein. It’s a very glamorous job really!

How did you getthat job?Well I had to go through an interview process but Assetsrecommended me.

So you are signed to Assets?Yes I signed a while ago now. Everyone said ‘go on do it’ andI didn’t have the balls. I just didn’t think I would getanywhere. Assets actually approached me on numerous

occasions. I went to the launches of different things likeCelebrity Salon, not this year, and got recognised but I nevertrusted it would happen. When I eventually did go after itthey asked me why I hadn’t done it long ago and I said Ididn’t think I was tall enough but they said in Ireland youdon’t have to be tall to model.

Tell us about Miss Ireland.Well I made it into the top seven last year and was crownedMiss Congeniality. That was in August and I was supposedto go back to college in the September but the bookingswere flying in and I decided to take a year out.

What were youstudying?I was in Ballyfermot and had done a year in TV presenting.I wanted to go on and do journalism. I didn’t do it initiallybecause it was a three-year degree and I didn’t feel matureenough. I’m hoping to go back next year now as I haveplenty of work in the meantime.

So what’s coming up for you?Well I start filiming the ICA Bootcamp in January so that willtake up a lot of my time and I have other work in betweenas well as my part-time jobs!

How did you get involved in that?Assets do all my commercial bookings so that’s how thatcame about.

Would you evercondsider any otherreality shows – like Tallafornia?I probably wouldn’t do Tallafornia for my family’s sake.Kelly [Donegan] is also an Assets model and she is lovelyso I have nothing against it. It’s good TV I just don’t think Iwould do it.

Describe a typicalworking week for you.A typical week would be lots of press calls, [news]papershots and working with Brendan.

Have you metmany celebritiesalong the way?Well I have a part-time job with Character Beautywhich works a lot with Xpose etc. I’ve met KarenKoster, Glenda Gilson and Pippa O’Connor. I’vealso met Colin Farrell, Kirk from TOWIE, thecast of Made In Chelsea, the whole of theHollyoaks cast and Kimberly Wyatt.

Page 16: InTallaght EDITION 22

What’s been thebest advice you havebeen given alongthe way?Rosanna Davidson was in the salon one day and I didn’tknow her but had seen her at events. Anyway she told methat things were going to get worse before they got better. She said at my age that she wasn’t doing as well as me andI was telling her that I wanted to be a presenter but even ifI didn’t get that I wanted to be involved in TV. She said I wasgoing about it a good way.

What’s your experience of themodelling world? If I am brutally honest it is quite nasty in ways. It’s good inIreland as the industry is so small but then again if you getin there, there is fighting for jobs. On so many occasions Ihave got a call asking ‘how did you get that job?’ You haveto have a good head and a thick skin because the amountof times I have come home crying. Some girls, who havebeen in modeling for a few years can be nasty too whenthey see fresher faces coming in but there is room here foreveryone.

What do you thinkabout plastic surgery? So many models are getting it done. Someone asked meonce would I consider it and I said ‘my body hasn’t evendeveloped properly yet so I’m not getting anything done!’Having said that there are lots of girls even younger thanme getting it.

Do you go in for thesize zero obsession? The international models have flat stomachs and are sizezero but in Ireland we are more realistic with 6s, and 8s and10s and that’s the way it should be.

After three years The Aluskas have released a cracking debut album, Draw, andare about to head on tour with it.The band which is made up of brothers, Anthony and David Byrne with Philip Tinsley caught up with InTallaghtto talk about where they’ve come from and where it is they believe they are going.

Where in Tallaght doyou guys come from?Anthony: David and myself are from Springfield andPhilip is from Fettercairn. We all went to school inSt Mark’s Community School.

So how long has theband been together?Philip: The Aluskas were formed in 2009. We were in afour piece called Willow years ago, during the schoolyears. We’ve been playing headline and support gigsaround Ireland for the last three years. We released ourdebut single Backwater Woods last January.

Your debut albumwas released duringthe summer, so tell us about it?David: The album is called DRAW! and was released onJuly 30. We recorded it over the course of 13 days. Wealready had a backlog of songs, which made it easier topick tracks that were complimentary to one another. We’re delighted with it, the change in musical styleskeeps the record feeling unexpected.

How would you describe your sound? Anthony: It’s rooted in early rock and roll with a modernmindset. We take elements of folk, rock, and moremodern genres like electronic music in the future. David: It’s very diverse; from 50’s ballads, 60’s rock androll and story-based songs. Philip: We’re always trying to get as many differentelements together as possible.

What bands influence you? Anthony: The Beatles, Neil Young, Simon and Garfunkel,Credence Clearwater Revival, The Beach Boys. David: Van Morrison, Led Zepplin,The Frames, Oasis, Thin Lizzy. Philip: Very influenced by anyone who tries differentstyles, bands that don’t stick too rigidly to any one genrelike Radiohead for example.

You guys are a totallyindependent group? Anthony: Yes we are, we aren’t with a label. We supportall aspects of independent art, music and film. For thealbum we set up our own label Cobweb Recordings andfor the design of the album cover we got an independentdesigner called Natalie McGlynn.

Is it easier nowadaysto go down the Independent route?Anthony: Yes the music model has definitely changedand the way things have gone means artists have morecontrol over their work. Philip: Social media and sites like Bandcamp have madeit much more democratic so you don’t need a label to getyour stuff out there. Also technology has made it possiblefor an indipendent group to make their work sound justas good, quality wise, as a band who’ve used an expensivestudio.David: The only downside, I would say, with every artisthaving access to the internet means that because there’sso much stuff out there it can make it harder to findsomething, you have so much choice now.

I’ve seen two of yourvideos and have tosay they’re excellent,is it true you madethem yourselves? DavidYes we did. We all went to Kevin’s College in Crumlinand we studied Media Production. We shoot our ownvideos, everything from the animation to the directing.

What do you think ofthe music scene/business in Ireland? There’s loads of great Irish acts doing good stuff andworking hard yet they’re not getting any attention in thiscountry. In a survey recently of bands in the top 30 onlyfour were Irish. As regards Indie music it seems like youhave to be accepted by countries outside Ireland beforepeople here will say “oh yeah I like that”. I don’t know whythat is.

Irish begrugerymaybe?[All laugh] Yeah probably, there is a bit of that as well! But it’s always been like that here, UK and US bands getmore attention and of course the majority of radio hereis very pop-targeted.

What are your plansfor the future?Anthony: We’re going to tour the album for a couple ofmonths then we want to go back into the studio beforethe end of the year and make another record. We don’twant to keep people waiting; we don’t want to get stale

In June we announced thefirst every CommunityChampion in The Square, Bridie Sweeney, a volunteer of 50 years and itwas difficult tothink of an equally deserving person – but ithas become apparent sincethen that thereare plenty of youdoing great work in our community! This month the lovely Kitty Raftery, a Galwaynative who has brought much to Tallaght in the40 years she has lived here, was nominated byher predecessor for the award and is, we knowyou will agree, a very worthy winner.

Kitty is from Seskin View and is the wife of Patto whom she has been married for 37 years, mother of six including Colin, Gerard, Fiona,Ronan, Keith and Emmet and Grandmother toShannon and Erin.

Kitty moved to the area four decades ago for a‘nice pensionable job’ in the Civil Service but asthe years went on she made her mark in hercommunity in more ways than one.

For the past seven years Kitty has been anintegral part of the Senior Citizens’ Club, whichis based in The Postal Club in Kiltipper whereshe does everything from organise events, holidays and days out to teaching aerobics andline dancing to over 100 members.

She is the lifeblood of the club according toBridie who says that Kitty was the first personwho sprung to mind when she decided to votefor the next Community Champion.

Bridie said: “Kitty is the type of person who

shows kindness to everyone. She is a lovelyperson who visits the sick and makes the daysof those who come up to join in, in the club. Shelistens to people, she advises and for some sheis the family member they may be missing.Kitty is that club and she is loved andappreciated by all. I am delighted she is beinghonoured like this.”

Kitty first got involved with The Senior Citizens’Club when a flier came through her doorlooking for people to get involved in a ‘new clubfor over 50s’.

She said: “My neighbours and I went along, Iwas the ring leader, and we met Joe Tierneywho was the manager. The members werethere to meet up and socialise and they didthings like exercises and aerobics and I gotinvolved and started teaching line dancing.Pretty soon I was doing the aerobics too and Iwent off and got qualifications in it so I knewwhat I was doing was best for the persontaking part. I loved it from the very moment Iwent up there.”

Kitty works up at the club from Monday toFriday and looks after anything from 86-100people on a daily basis.

“The first thing we do is aerobics,” she said. “It’sgreat for them and is a great start to the day. There are more men that you would think upthere and for many it is a lifeline.

“Throughout the day then they do indoorbowls and play pool. There is a gym, where wehave two gym instructors, and a pitch and puttcourse and we have a professional artist whocomes in to teach art classes. We also do artsand crafts.”

As part of her role there Kitty arranges days outand weekends away for the members. Justrecently she organised for 120 to go to Galwayfor three nights. She also takes them for walksand organises picnics as well as fundraises forthe club which is subsidised by the HSE.

“It’s such a vital part of some many people’slives and I am honoured to be involved in it,”she said.

Kitty was also a huge force in the regenerationof The Square project. After being drafted in byBridie Kitty went door to door gettingsignatures of support for the building, somethingshe also did when the cinema moved out.

Bridie said: “She was a huge help and issomeone you can really rely on. Nobody knowsthat better than the members of the club. Ifthey have any issues they come to Kitty. If theyneed help they come to Kitty and knowing thatthey have that is something special.”

The Senior Citizens’ Club itself was founded byformer Guard Eddie Sadlier and his wifeAttracta and over the years welcomed manyfrom the settled travelling community fromthe north side of Dublin.

InTallaght_MasterEdition22_Layout 1 19/09/2012 10:37 Page 20

Page 21: InTallaght EDITION 22

“They were great people,” said Kitty. “Theyloved their time at the club and we enjoyedhaving them there but unfortunatelyGovernment cuts meant that in the end theyhad no means of transport here. I learned a lotfrom them as many people did. It’s veryimportant to treat everyone equally and theyalso said to me that I made them feel sowelcome which meant a lot.”

When her children were young Kitty stayed athome to look after them and many of the otherchildren on the road. She also paid regular visitsto Peamount to her ‘special friends’ and hosteda group from Cheeverstown every Thursday inthe club for years.

It seems that it’s because of the open-armedwelcome she has extended to so many for sucha long time that she is a much-loved memberof the community and long may she continueher fantastic work.

Jacob Keenan’sProgress Continues After Successful Operation

JACOB’S JOURNEY has just taken 3 year old Jacob FoleyKeenan from Kilnamanagh to St Louis in the USA and backhome again to Tallaght. After two tough but successfuloperations the little boy is beginning the next part of hisjourney, which will hopefully see him walking by Christmas.

Regular InTallaght readers will be familiar with Jacob’s story. He had been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy after an MRIscan at 18 months old and because of this had been unableto take more than a few steps unaided. When his familyheard of an operation available in the US, which wouldenable him to walk unaided and eliminate the need forBotox injections, they decided to go for it.

The procedure, which is carried out on children’s spinal cordsis known as selective dorsal rhizotomy and was available inSt. Louis Children hospital, Missouri, USA. Unfortunately theoperation isn’t funded by the HSE and is entirely fundedthrough donations and fundraising events and costs€50,000.

Jacob’s family and friends set about raising the moneyneeded to get him this much-needed operation. Manydifferent fundraising events were carried out before thetarget was reached. In July Jacob headed off to the US andthe St Louis Hospital to undergo the vital procedure.

His 1st operation, the SDR, took place on July 5th and a 2ndoperation followed on July 13th to lengthen his hamstringand heel chords. Both operations were a success and after amonth recuperating Jacob returned home on SundayAugust 5th to begin the next stage of his journey, which willentail 6 months of intensive physio.

His family is delighted with his progress, his mobility withregards to kneeling and standing is improving every fewdays thanks to lots of physiotherapy and hard work fromthe man himself.

Thanks to this increased mobility Jacob was able to start preschool last week and also recently began doing therapeutichorse riding as well, something his family say he absolutelyloves.

His Grandmother Marie Keenan told InTallaght that Jacobhas been doing very well since his successful operations inthe US.

“He is in great form and the physios are delighted with howhe’s doing. He is now able to stand alone with his feet onthe ground, without the sticks for a little bit longer, which isbrilliant. He’s also doing hydrotherapy and therapeutic horseriding, which he really enjoys. Plus he started pre school aswell last week so he’s very busy at the moment!”

RUNAWAYS, the latest single from The Killers, sounds pretty much like every other songthey’ve written in the last few years, with abit of 80’s power rock thrown in for goodmeasure!

Taken from the bands upcoming fourth studio albumBattle Born, Runaways is more of the same from theLas Vegas band; a big anthemic easy listening tunewith sing-along lyrics.

If that is your thing then you’ll love this single.Personally I’ve given up on the band after loving theirdebut album Hot Fuss when it came out in 2004.Since then there’s been a gradual decline in thequality of music being created, the last album beinga case in point.

Runaways tells the story of a couple living in smalltown America who want to get away from theirdreary lives and fulfill their dreams. Accompanied byhowling guitars and crashing drums, BrandonFlowers connects with his inner Bruce Springsteento deliver the story of a romance gone pear-shaped.

Along with channeling The Boss, there’s a nod toclassic American rock with both the lyric content andthe sound.

It’s not a terrible single, it’s just very predictable andunimaginative. I couldn’t imagine listening to thissong again, once was enough!

Production wise the track sounds brilliant, andFlowers can sing to be fair to him. While the bandhave a large worldwide fan base, (if album sales areanything to go by) I don’t think Runaways is goingto win over the people who can’t stand them.

Runaways feels more like an album track. I’msurprised The Killers, or their record company, thought this was the best release for their first singlein years. It is a catchy tune though and there’s alwaysa market for that!

The New Album From The xx–Well Worth The WaitTHIS month sees the release of Coexist the longawaited second album from South London indietrio The xx.

Three years on from their remarkable self-titled debutalbum, which earned the band a host of awards andaccolades from around the world, The xx are back with arecord, and a sound, not a million miles away from theirprevious work.

Taking elements of trip hop, drum and bass and indie, they make the kind of chilled out easy listening musicyou’d stick on after getting back to your house from aclub.

Coexist sticks to the same formula, as fans would expect,a lot of haunting lead guitar, synth and bass with steeldrums knocking about in the background. However, onedifference here is that the band open up more than theydid on their debut record, with heartbreak and thedisintegration of a relationship being the overridingthemes.

Opening track and first single Angels is one of theirquietest tracks, but one of their most powerful, as haunting

female vocals are delivered over soft bass to create anemotional track that would melt the hardest of hearts.

Next up is Chained, a tune which contains all thehallmarks of the band, rhythmic drum beats and a guitarriff rising to create an uplifting feeling of chilled out blisswith two of the band members sharing vocal duties.

Fraction and Try, the next two tracks are slower anddarker than the rest of the album, neither rise like theprevious tracks leaving a more melancholic lessoptimistic mood.

After this comes Sunset, the only real foot tapping ‘up andat ‘em’ dance tune on Coexist and one of my favourites.

Of the rest of the album, the stand out tracks for me areMissing and Unfold, both featuring weird drumbeats andenough ambiance to keep long-term lovers of the bandhappy.

So the what’s the verdict? Coexist is a good album thatwill suck you in with its powerful sound and emotivelyrics, full of tunes you’ll hear as background music onnumerous TV shows over the next year. I don’t know ifit’s an improvement on xx, after being away for threeyears I would have expected the band to be more in-spired.

However, I imagine fans won’t be disappointed as it hasplenty of first album elements - they’re just not executedas well.

Hyundai introduces itscutting-edge HyundaiVeloster three-doorcoupe, which deliversinnovation to thecompact coupésegment, with aunique third door foreasy rear-seat access.Hyundais aren’t what they used to be and this one mostcertainly isn’t – albeit largely owing to the fact that it’snever existed in the first place – but the budget Koreanbrand is definitely evolving, in both in engineering anddesign terms, having knocked out a few cars of late that

44

InTallaght_MasterEdition22_Layout 1 19/09/2012 10:41 Page 44

Page 45: InTallaght EDITION 22

have gotten mainstream European marques more than just a little hot under the collar.

The Veloster is the most strikingly alternative Korean curveball yet as either a coupé with an extra orifice or ahatch with one hinge short of a full set. Yep, it’s got three doors… and that’s not including the boot. However, unlike the only other three-door oddball, the Mini Clubman, the Veloster wins the toss every time by havingthe extra door on the correct side of the ride in every country - including Ireland.

Outside, the Veloster looks positively chunky compared to the famous Hyundai Coupé. It has a very interestingexterior with creases and curves that bring a smile to your face. It has similar proportions to a VW Sirocco - andthat is a good thing. Sitting on 17-inch alloys, the four-seater, front-wheel drive car turns heads. Veloster isavailable in some vivid colours and while a bright green test car divides opinion - let’s face it: you don’t buy acoupé to be anonymous.

Inside, the driver and front seat passenger are well catered for with a nice dashboard and good levels ofequipment. The rear seating is, as you would expect, a compromise. Headroom is poor for adults although thereis space for two people. At anything over 5’4” you will need to sit with your head almost tilted back (and underthe very long rear tailgate glass), otherwise your head will hit off the roof where the roof lining joins the tailgate. The trim for the rear passenger, who sits behind the front passenger, is better quality than behind the driver –clearly Hyundai knows the Veloster will be used more as a 2+1 than a 2+2.

Hyundai has a great five-year warranty with Roadside Assistance and Vehicle Health Check as standard. Thereis just one specification and this keeps things simple. Veloster costs €24,995 on the road and CO2 is 137g/km,so that means owners will pay €225 in annual road tax. A local company hasjust launched a newproduct which itclaims will save businesses moneyand create new jobs. The firm, known as Hydrus Ltd is based in GreenogueBusiness Park and has developed a new rainwaterharvesting system called Hydrus Water Supply whichit believes will help companies reduce their waterbills – a significant development in the water supplymarket in Ireland, it says.

Company Director Christopher Walter told InTallaght:“When it comes to water supply most businesses arekeen to explore rainwater harvesting. However thedisruption and cost of installation tends to deter most. The new Hydrus system eradicates all of theseconcerns. It really is a win-win with the new watersupply ‘index-linked’ at a lower rate per cube and onlythe water replaced being charged for.

“Traditional systems often require the installation ofunderground tanks but Hydrus is simply a small box(similar to an alarm) connected to rainwaterdownpipes. Traditional systems are restricted by whatthe collected rainwater can be used for, often requiringthe need for a new pipe network.,” he added.

“Hydrus connects directly to the existing systemmeaning more water can be utilised and installationis far less disruptive. The most important point from abusiness perspective is the elimination of initialexpenditure and any level of risk. The majority ofbusinesses should qualify for a free supply andinstallation of their new water supply system.

“They then pay for the water that is used via their newsystem at a lower price per cube than their currentsupplier.

The free of charge supply and installation is subject tosite survey and current water expenditure analysis, however it is anticipated that the majority ofcompanies will qualify. For more information contactHYDRUS, Q16, Greenogue Business Park, Rathcoole,Dublin 24 or Telephone 01 9011690.

Eileen Casey is a poet, short fiction writer and journalist. Originally from the Midlands, she’s lived in Tallaght, South Dublin since the late 1970’s. She has been facilitating creative writing in Adult Educationsince the 1980’s. Being a part of children’s creative journeys in recent years Eileen considers to be a realprivilege. She is currently putting together an anthology of the children’s poetry under the title ‘Happyas Butter’.

As part of AltEnts Arts Organisation’s 2012 Children’s Arts Festival, Eileen acted as Poetry Facilitator to five primary schoolsthroughout Tallaght and Clondalkin. It is InTallaght’s privilege to present to you a selection of the poems that were writtenduring these sessions. In this, and the next four editions of InTallaght, we will be featuring poetry written by the students ofClonburrus National School and St John’s National School in Clondalkin as well as Scoil Chaitlin Maude, Scoil Santain and HolyRosary National School, Ballycragh – all in Tallaght.

Before we jump straight into the children’s poetry, Eileen had the following to say about how she went about the process ofthe workshops, and how the children reacted to them.

“One of the first things I did was to take an ornamental bird (left over from last Christmas) from my carrier bag. This bird I de-clared to be a Swallow saying that its wing was broken after flying 10,000 miles from Africa. How could it be fixed in a poem?Within minutes, wonderful lines were coming thick and fast:‘…a Swallow isn’t made from chrome or stone, it’s made of feather and bone..’‘…a Swallow broke its wing on its way to spring…’‘…I’m going to fix this Swallow’s wing with rope and glue and things…’Seamus Heaney himself would be proud to own these lines’” she said.

“As the week went by with startling speed, I was astonished by the unfailing ability of the children to bring objects togetherthat ordinarily wouldn’t belong, objects such as a bear in the classroom. I brought oyster shells from Galway to classroomsunder the mountains in South Dublin. The children responded eloquently. Such bringing together sparks the language of

poetry. We made lists of similes and metaphors. I was de-lighted by the ease with which fresh, original descriptionsarrived. Sunflowers when watered were declared ‘…happyas butter…’

“The children’s bi-lingual prowess surfaced in poems suchas ‘Thank you for mo mhala scoile nua/mar bhris me theother one.’

“Finally, I found in a collaborative poem, not only humour, but a bringing together of nature and technology whichended the week as it begun, in total delight: “The sea tasteslike salt/it’s not its fault/the sea feels like rain/it puts outflame/the sea looks like blue jelly/even on the telly.’”

She added: “Thanks to AltEnts and the Arts Council for sup-porting the Children’s Arts Festival. Thanks to all the schoolsfor taking part and to Clondalkin Library for hosting St John’sNational School. Thanks also to all who made me feel sowelcome and who were responsible for the smooth organ-isation of a really enjoyable week of magic.”

Funny woman DawnFrench expands herwriting repitoire. This book caught my eye in Tallaght library as I was shelteringfrom the rain before heading to the bus stop. The typographyis quirky and fun, and the little silhouette of a dog drew myeye. I’ve been a fan of Dawn French since her stint as the pro-tagonist in the very funny Vicar of Dibley, which I loved in myteens. I had been meaning to read her autobiography DearFatty, but hadn’t got around to it yet. Now here was a novelby my favourite comedienne. I snapped it up.

Having previously written for TV, for serious dramas as wellas comedy sketches, Dawn has said “I have turned away fromthe thought of writing fiction in the past through what I sup-pose is actually, fear. The direct, raw invitation for the readerto come in and explore my imagination is fairly scary for meso I have busied myself with so much else. I am in my 50snow and it's time to be unafraid!”

I for one am glad she made the leap to novel writing. A TinyBit Marvellous is told through the eyes of a mother and hertwo teenage children.

Dawn said: “The inspiration for the story came fromlistening to so many of my 50-year-old plus chumsrabbiting on about how their teenage children area mystery and a challenge and listening to the

teenagers thinking the same about their Mums. “

The mother, professional, well-spoken and well-versed Mo,should be in a good position to understand her offspring, being a child psychiatrist but this seems to make their bafflingbehaviour all the worse. She is about to turn 50 and is havinga mid-life panic. She has become entirely grey. Inside, andout. She is also, irony of ironies, in the process of writing a sur-vival manual for parents of teens as she remains completelyclueless about and/or at loggerheads with her own.

Her 17-year-old daughter Dora is the typical stroppyteenager. She is going through a difficult time, having justcome out of her first relationship, which lasted all of six weeks. She’s finishing her A Levels and thinks the world hates her.

French’s own daughter Billie, is now 19 – roughly the sameage as the inexhaustibly stroppy daughter, Dora, in her novel. However, French insists there’s no similarity between the twoof them. She said: “She’s really not like that, never has been.My daughter isn’t at all extreme like the girl in the book.”The 16-year-old son Peter prefers to be known as Oscar due

to his obsession with Oscar Wilde. He is a delightfully campand entertaining character, much more so than Dora, whosecharacter I found a bit grating.

The book is written in a diary style, from the point of view ofthese three characters. Thankfully Mo and Peter more thanmade up for my annoyance at Dora’s chapters.

I was expecting a bit more laugh-out -oud humour from thisbook but it was funnyish in parts, where we can laugh at themundanity of life. We get to see the ups and downs of familylife and the different relationships and feelings they have foreach other. In the end it’s a heartwarming story with genuinehumour. As long as you don’t expect a laugh a minute, I’d giveit a go if you like Dawn French.

About The AuthorDawn French is a British actress, writer and comedian. She is best known for starring in and writing for the com-edy sketch show French and Saunders with comedy part-ner Jennifer Saunders and also for playing the lead roleof Geraldine Granger in the sitcom The Vicar of Dibley.

I want to go all-out with myHalloween costume this year.Last year I went as Medusawith a scary green scaly face. What would be a prettiermakeup look for this year?Emma, Knocklyon

Hi Emma, I love Halloween too and I always go for the scary look aswell. WhatI would suggest is to check online as you can find some amazing hair andmakeup looks which may help inspire you for this ‘Hallows’ Eve. If you googlewhatever you’re thinking of, there’s sure to be other people’s attempts at it,like the ‘Black Swan’ look below. There are also plenty of step-by-step tutorialvideos available to watch for free. It has really given me some good ideas andI think this year I will join you on the pretty Halloween look.

I have no idea how to apply blusheror what colour to go for. I’m a brunette.Samantha, Cookstown

Hi Samantha, The first thing to do is to look at your skin tone. Just like hair colour varies widelyamong brunettes, skin tones differ too–from olive to very fair. In general, brunettes can wearmore dramatic shades of blush and are more likely to be able to handle deeper and brightershades such as mauve and hot pink. Your hair colour matters, too: the darker the hair, thebrighter the colour.

For the application of your blusher you will need a good blusher brush. I like to use the 168Large Angle Contour Brush from MAC. This brush can also be used for contouring the face. When I am applying blusher I start on the apple of the cheek using a circular movement, andthen sweep the rest of the product in an upward stroke on to the cheekbone. The trick to ap-plying blush is to use a small amount of the product and a very light pressure, building thecolour as you go.

LawnsAs autumn turns to winter, try and make the most of anydry days and rake the lawn to keep it free of leaves. Athick layer of leaves will damage a lawn and weaken thegrass, and it also provides winter shelter for unwelcomegarden pests.

Avoid walking on your lawn if it’s frosted, as this can alsodamage the grass.

With summer at an end and autumn just around the cor-ner now is a good time to take a good look at your gar-den. Look around carefully, note your triumphs and yourdisappointments, and make changes toward the end ofthis month. It’s time to think of ordering those new roses, shrubs, and other plants that you need.

Regularly remove wilted flowers from Dahlias, Gegoniasand Cannas to stimulate new flower growth. Summerflowering heather can be cut back.

Despite the obvious benefits that container-grown plantshave brought gardening, the autumn is still the best timefor planting. The soil is still warm and the autumnal rainswill get them established before the winter sets in, givinga good start for the next season.

Now is also the perfect time to move or plant Evergreenand Coniferous plants. When moving Evergreens, domake sure that you retain a good ball of undisturbed soilaround their roots and plant them no deeper than theoriginal depth. Firm them in well using your heel ratherthan the flat of your foot and water them in well, ensur-ing that the foliage is also wetted.

SeedsSow sweet peas in the greenhouse or a cold frame forearly summer flowers next year. They’ll grow as soon asthe weather gets warm enough, and will be ready forplanting out next spring.

WildlifeMigrant birds such as Swallows and House Martins willbegin flying south for the winter so keep bird feedersand birdbaths topped up to encourage more birds to visityour garden as autumn sets in.

Ladybugs and Lacewings eat Aphids such as Blackfly andWhitefly that will destroy crops, so plant bright flowerssuch as Candytuft, Sunflowers and Marigolds, and createplaces where these bugs can shelter and lay their eggs.

How to prevent dirty fingernailsTo help prevent the build-up of dirt under your finger-nails while you work in the garden, rub your fingernailsacross a bar of soap and you’ll successfully seal the un-dersides of your nails so dirt can’t collect beneath them. Then, after you’ve finished in the garden, use a nailbrushto remove the soap and your nails will be sparkling clean.

The next time you boil or steam vegetables, don’t pourthe water down the sink, when cool use it to water yourpotted patio plants and you’ll be astonished at how theplants respond to the vegetable soup.

Proper timing makes all the difference when it comes toplanting your garden. Try and learn how long each plantneeds to grow to full development, what time of year itshould be planted: early spring or summer or autumn, and when to begin to plant your seedlings.

Knowing these details will help make the difference be-tween a successful and unsuccessful garden.

The pondFallen leaves can cause problems for your pond at thistime of year. The leaves should be fished out frequentlyusing a fishing net. Another way is to cover the pond withnetting during the autumn months.

It is very important to clean the pond thoroughly beforewinter. This can help to prevent a build-up on the bed ofthe pond during the winter months as well as the growthof algae in early spring. Remove all dead vegetation, fallen leaves and excess underwater plants, and removethe sediment from decomposing organic matter on thebed of the pond. Any material removed from the pondshould be left next to the pond for a few hours, helpingcreatures that have accidentally been removed with thisorganic matter to get back into the pond. These creaturesare vital for a proper balance in the pond.

By the way the organic matter removed is a very goodcomponent for the compost heap.

Sooner or later, you’re going to tweak your back, andthere’s nothing you’ll ever experience, perhaps shy oflimb dismemberment, that’ll put a stop to your trainingas cruelly or effectively. Of course, if you’ve already hadsome back problems, you know what we’re talkingabout. Both athletes and non-athletes get back pain. Both sedentary and active folks get back pain. Restassured that we’ll probably tweak them here and thereover the course of a lifetime, even with perfect form, ideal warm-ups and perfect workouts!

Think about it this way...How many of you have a friend who has had his/herback go out simply from tying a shoe or picking up apencil? I know of a guy who squatted over 280kg whothrew out his back picking up his baby. Many spineproblems are the result of years and years of cumula-tive trauma – repeated flexion/extension, lateral flex-ion and rotation. Who is to say that a lot of that traumadidn’t take place before you ever took up weight train-ing or your sport of choice? Just ask the 4.4 per cent ofsix-year olds who already have spondylolysis!

Everyone has known someone with back pain so badthat it stumps every doctor out there. One of myrelatives, for instance, has been to hell and back withback pain since he and his moped had a disagreementseveral years ago, that, alongside heavy lifting in hisjob. Now numerous MRI scans later he still experiment-ing with treatments.

This actually isn’t uncommon at all. In fact, the authorof one meta-analysis in the New England Journal ofMedicine found that 85 per cent of back pain caseshave no definitive diagnosis. It kind of makes you won-der why they do those MRIs anyway, doesn’t it?

Moving on...Exercise and back painThere are, however, things you can do to see what youshould do and what to avoid in the gym. The easiestway to go about this is movement mapping.Performing a series of simple movements that can helpdetermine which ones cause more pain or less pain, and then use the results to guide you in the gym.Further, it can give you an idea of what may be wrongand what you need to do to fix it or who you need tosee to get it fixed.

If you would like details on movement mapping pleaseemail me on [email protected]

Wrap Up

If your back’s holding you back, fight back and get mov-ing again. By training around your injury and thinkingabout what the problem may be versus pushingthrough it or dropping out on it altogether, you can ac-tually help to speed recovery and get back to a pain-free life.

Hesaid: “ Even though the clubhouse was small it was a greatfocal point and a huge step up from changing on thosecold damp nights at the side of the road. At the time wehad our original track behind where the current track islocated. “

“I believe these facilities were the springboard for thehuge growth in the number of junior members and withthe amalgamation of Tallaght Athletic Club in 1997 thenumber of junior athletes grew further. We also adoptedthe name of Tallaght Athletic Club, dropping the referenceto the individual clubs.”

Under the chairmanship of Kevin O’Reilly the club pushedon with an adventurous plan to move to a new base. In2001 the decision was made to sell the old clubhouse inorder to fund the new project. In the meantime the clubmoved to a new track between the old one and theGreenhills Road (current track) and following endlesshours of hard work by the committee Tallaght AC movedto its state of the art premises two years ago.

Club PRO Ray Fitzsimons said that all new members aremore than welcome. “We train at the track from 7pm to8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and for the committedathlete who wants to do middle distance and long dis-tance running we meet at the clubhouse for off-track en-durance training on Monday and Wednesdays from 6pmto 7.30pm and on Sundays at 9am,” he said.

SHANE O’CONNORFormer Irish under 21 international Shane O’Connor will hopefully bringsome top level experience to the Hoops.Shane O’Connor joined Rovers at the closure of the domestic transfer window and made his debut for Rovers inSeptember in the Leinster Senior Cup final. He missed the subsequent 2-2 draw with Shelbourne but did start in thegames against Bohs and the cup quarter final against Shels. In the second half of that game with the Hoops, down to10 men, O’Connor was deployed in an unorthodox back three arrangement with Pat Sullivan and Kerrea Gilbert as theHoops sought to chase an equaliser that never came.

The 22 year-old was signed from his home town club of Cork City during the summer where he had struggled to holddown a place making only five league appearances. The left sided player played as a youth with Roy Keane’s formerclub Rockmount. Having joined Liverpool from there as a youth team player, O’Connor made the switch to Ipswich whowere managed by Keane at the time. The former Ireland under 21 international played 17 times for Ipswich with hislast appearance coming in a League Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates. He had a loan spell with PortVale before making the move back to Ireland earlier this year.

September started with a certain sense of optimism forShamrock Rovers, as it seemed the Hoops had turned thecorner on a disappointing season. Whilst the LeinsterSenior Cup may have been won at the beginning of themonth it was Rovers’ ongoing failure to win a leaguegame in Tallaght since May and the prospect of noEuropean football in 2012 that saw Rovers make thedecision to part company with Stephen Kenny.

Kenny had come under intense pressure since thesummer as his team failed to match the expectations ofeveryone at the club. A 4-0 away defeat in June toBohemians and a first-stage embarrassing exit fromEurope to Ekranas of Lithuania had piled the pressure on.Rovers had been unbeaten at home in the league allseason, drawing eight times, until a 1-0 defeat toBohemians brought that run to a shuddering halt. Thiswas the final straw for the Hoops board.

The previous week Rovers had welcomed Shelbourne toTallaght and the expectation was this would see Roverswin their first league game at home since the 3-1 winover Drogheda in mid-May. Rovers had played and beatenShels three times up to that point in the season scoring11 goals in the process. Leading 1-0 at half time, thanksto a well-taken goal by Ciarán Kilduff, the win seemedinevitable but the Hoops couldn’t get that second goaland allowed Shels to come back into the game concedingtwo goals after a couple of defensive errors by Rovers. Apoint was rescued by Ronan Finn’s seventh-league goalof the season seven minutes from time.

Three days later, it was the turn of Bohemians to come to Tallaghtand this time there was no equaliser that Rovers could findhaving conceded a late first half goal. Gary Twigg did hit thecross bar in the second half with the woodwork also havingsaved Bohs in the first half from a well -hit Tommy Stewart shot.

Less than 24 hours later, Stephen Kenny was no longerthe manager at Shamrock Rovers. The Hoops ChairmanJonathan Roche said, “We have not taken this decisionlightly and we are extremely disappointed with the turnof events. However, the club feels that this is the rightdecision at this time.”

Stephen Glass stepped up to manage the team in thenext game, a game that saw Rovers eliminated from theFAI Cup by Shelbourne 2-1 in Tolka Park. The search forRovers’ 25th FAI Cup win goes on for another season asRovers meekly exited the competition at the quarterfinalstage.

It was a meg-shift defensive formation for Rovers whoonly had one centre-half, Ken Oman, fit for the game andhe was sent off before half time. They also had to dealwith Stephen Rice going off with a nasty head injury thatmeant he left the ground in an ambulance. A late SeanGannon free kick gave the score a better look than wasprobably merited.

The result means that Rovers face a battle to even qualifyto play in Europe next season, which is a remarkableturnaround after last year’s European success. Rovers arejust one place but five points off the automaticqualification spot, nine points clear of the team in fifthplace. This means that they will be relying on eitherDrogheda United or Saint Patrick’s Athletic to win the FAICup to free up a European place for Rovers.
