Building on SuccessOur New Chair

For Maurice Tulloch, BA(Econ), MBA, CMA,there was no master plan to launch theimpressive career he has charted to date.We might say, however, that he has had amethod, and we might call that method bythe goal he has set as our new Chair:“building on success.”

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Maurice cameto Canada at the age of five and grew upin Markham, Ontario. His mother was aninvestment banker; his father, an entrepreneur.Maurice completed most of his schoolingin Canada, but when his parents’ workoccasioned a transfer to the United Kingdom,

Building on Success: Our New Chair

came the opportunity to relocate to thecorporate headquarters in London,England, where Maurice became GlobalBusiness Manager, working closely withglobal CEO Richard Harvey. This provedinvaluable training—preparing briefingsfor meetings with senior political figures, business leaders, and regulators; studyingthe global insurance business at closehand; learning about the savings businessand other aspects of the global operation;and working with the Association ofBritish Insurers. In 2002, Maurice returnedto Canada and, assuming progressivelymore senior management positions, became President of Pilot Insurance in2006 and then President and CEO ofAviva Canada in 2009.

A commitment to education has been aconstant for Maurice. After completinghis CMA designation, he went on toattain his MBA degree from Heriot-WattUniversity in Scotland. While in England,Maurice had been impressed by thestature of the insurance industry thereand how it attracts top graduates from

British universities. Today, he ensuresthat the Institute is actively promoted toemployees of Aviva Canada; indeed, anInstitute designation or the commitmentto obtain one is a prerequisite for technicalpositions at Aviva. Maurice has attendedInstitute convocation ceremonies insupport of Aviva graduates for the lastdecade, and he welcomes theopportunity as Chair to congratulategraduates at convocation ceremoniesacross the country.

Maurice finds the Institute to be a verysuccessful, well-run organization. AsChair, he will continue to promote theInstitute to all members of the industry. He will encourage the Institute’sinitiatives with e-learning, seeing them asa nimble and needed response to thegreater demands that modern lifeincreasingly places on members’ time.Maurice also sees opportunity inalliances with other organizations, tocollaborate on best practices. Still, hesees no change in the Institute’s essentialmandate and sets as his main goal tobuild on the Institute’s success to date.

Overseeing one of Canada’s largestinsurers is time-consuming work—notto mention travel to England twicemonthly on business with the parentcompany. As well, Maurice serves asChair of the Property and CasualtyInsurance Compensation Corporation,Deputy Chair of Insurance Bureau ofCanada, and member of the board of theGeneral Insurance Statistical Agency andthe Leadership Council Committee of theToronto Financial Services Alliance. He isalso an active supporter of the UnitedWay and the fight against juvenilediabetes through JDRF Canada. Yet ontop of it all, Maurice makes time forfamily. He and his wife are proud parentsof two children. They are avid skiers, andMaurice also manages seven or eightoutings a year to work on his golfhandicap!

We are most fortunate to be led for thecoming year by so accomplished andprominent a figure in the Canadianinsurance industry. Congratulations,Maurice, and welcome aboard!

The Institute recently interviewed severalexecutives in Canada’s p&c industry onprofessional development and continuingeducation as essential ingredients for thecontinued success of their organizationsand of the industry as a whole.

Human Resources departments are atthe forefront of insurance organizationstoday in their quest for talent. Insuranceprofessionals who have advancedmanagement techniques and are able tothink critically and strategically are inhigh demand.

How are employers going to meet theindustry’s requirements?

Alain Thibault, former President andCEO, TD Insurance and Meloche Monnex, says “one of the critical responsibilities ofinsurance executives today is developingtalent within the organization. We are ina war for talent and the organizationsthat will be successful are the ones who

will attract not only the best talent butthose who can develop their skills andknowledge.”

Thibault goes on to say that thechallenge in advancing in an insurancecareer is the complexity and the range ofissues that must be dealt with. “This hasbecome a very complex world, andcertainly insurance is no exception.”

Technology and new attitudes towardsbusiness are changing client expectations. How clients are serviced and how their

privacy is protected are just two areasthat organizations need to be on top of.

As a logical progression into the FCIPProgram upon achieving the CIPdesignation, individuals who want tobecome more effective leadersthroughout Canada’s p&c insurancelandscape will find the tools andknowledge needed to become one ofthe sought-after professionals in thisrapidly changing sector.

Lynn Oldfield, President and CEO,Chartis Insurance Canada, believes theFCIP Program is a valuable solution foremployers.

“The FCIP brings education, trainingand development, and experientiallearning together. With senior-levelprogram topics like strategic thinkingand enterprise risk management, theprogram brings together teams and

Feed the Minds of Youth: Ten Years and Going Strong!

The tenth annual Feed the Minds of Youth event was held Wednesday, November 7,2012, as part of the Learning Partnership’s “Take Our Kids to Work Day.” Across thecountry, grade 9 students headed to work with a parent or guardian to get a glimpseof what their work entails and a taste of a career in the insurance industry.

With the Institute’s Feed the Minds of Youth lunchtime event, students learn aboutinsurance industry roles through presentations by guest speakers (ambassadors), byviewing the Insurance Career Video, and by participating in games and activities.

Some 800 students enjoy an interactive and engaging introduction to the manycareer options in our industry. Students received a Career Connections kit, a leadershipnotebook, and a richer awareness of insurance and its role in our society. Industryemployers benefitted from either a lunchtime event to enrich the day for studentsand parents or an “event-in-a-box” package of resources for their own in-house sessions,day-long job shadowing, or workplace tours for students.

instructs on leadership style andmanagement leadership skills.”

Oldfield says that Chartis employees arechallenged to take ownership of theirown careers, and the FCIP Program wouldbe a natural extension of that challenge.

Maurice Tulloch, President and ChiefExecutive Officer, Aviva Canada, andincoming Chair of the Board of Governorsof the Insurance Institute of Canada, saysa unique aspect of the FCIP Program thatbenefits both candidates and employersis the program’s capstone project.

“It gives students the ability to take areal-world issue in their own firm or inthe industry and work through that issuewith their colleagues and bring backsolutions that they’ve tested. That’s whereyou cross the boundary betweeneducation and training.”

He goes on to say, “we are in a competitivelandscape. As people evolve, and ourbusiness is changing day by day, we needpeople to be able to handle the amountof data and understand how it impactsour business. We also need people to

lead. We need people who are able toapply their knowledge and their learning.”And once that gap is filled, organizationsneed to ensure that their top talent staysput and develops the leadership skillsthat are in demand.

With a look towards future employment,Gregg Hanson, former President andChief Executive Officer, The WawanesaMutual Insurance Company, offers histhoughts on education as a positiveoutcome that benefits both employerand employee.

“The skills that people learn in the FCIPProgram not only give them skills for thepositions that they hold today but makethem much more valuable to theorganization and the organization’ssuccess for the future.”

Hanson believes that an employer whosupports employees in the progressionof their careers will also gain their loyalty.

“I think the investment that an employermakes in an employee has both animmediate and a long-term benefit. Theimmediate benefit is that it makes theemployee more productive in their work, makes them more satisfied in their job, makes them more understanding ofwhat they do. And in the longer term, since they are committed to improvingthemselves and committed to a career inthe insurance industry, they will be morevaluable to the company in the future.”

Education is now fundamental forprofessionals who aspire to be leaders inthe industry. As employees find themselveswith room to grow as insuranceprofessionals, employers and studentscontinue to rely on the Institute to providethe skills development and knowledgeneeded to strengthen Canada’s p&cworkforce.

This year’s Fall Campaign is one of ourmost robust to date, with nearly 200 careerevents, including classroom presentations, conferences with educators, panelconversations, and career fairs, takingplace over a 14-week period across thecountry! That translates into three eventsper business day, keeping our 3.5 personstaff and over 70 Ambassadors pretty busyas they engage students and careerseekers in exploring and connecting to ameaningful career in Canada’s property &casualty insurance industry.

On-Campus Presence

Last year, over 50,000 post-secondarystudents had the opportunity to learnmore about careers in insurance throughthe Career Connections on-campuspresence at 96 events across the country.

So far, we have participated in over 50events targeted to post-secondarystudents. One of the drivers to helpingus achieve our outreach objectives of100 post-secondary events is the successof our outreach in the province ofQuebec and adding additional outreachopportunities in key areas of the countryidentified in our HR Roundtablediscussions with recruiters across thecountry.

In addition, we are continuing to growour participation in industry panelconversations, to give classroompresentations by subject-matter experts, and to host insurance-specific career fairson post-secondary campuses. Thisincludes the eight educational partners

across the country offering a BusinessInsurance program with a focus on theChartered Insurance Professionaldesignation. Career Connections isworking towards the goal of hosting 40insurance-specific events on campus overthe course of the 2012–13 campaign.

We have also once again collaboratedwith CGA Ontario to host StudentConnect—Careers in Financial Services. This year, we added a fall event atWilfrid Laurier University and will also behosting an event on February 1, 2013 inthe GTA. Community Career Events

Over the course of our campaign to date,we have also participated in over 25 careerfairs hosted by schools, school boards, and communities. These career eventsare designed to assist students andcareer seekers as they make decisionsabout their education and career paths.

As a prime example, on September28–30, Career Connections staff andAmbassadors were promoting careers inour industry, educational pathways, andthe CIP designation at the OntarioUniversities Fair and Student Life Expo. This provided the opportunity for ourmessaging to reach over 100,000 students, career changers, teachers, and parents. We also launched our YouTube Channel(www.youtube.com/careersininsurance),a career-mapping tool, and an interactivequiz (www.career-connections.info) as apart of these events.

This fall, Career Connections alsoparticipated in the Ontario CollegeInformation Fair, the Victoria Educationand Career Fair, the Vancouver Educationand Career Fair, the Abbotsford Educationand Career Fair, City Career Expo (Toronto),and the Alberta Career Fair (Edmonton).

This style of event also presentstremendous opportunity to promote thefull-time college and university programs

with an insurance stream, a CanadianInsurance Chair, or an opportunity tocomplete credits towards the CharteredInsurance Professional designation aspart of a business program.

Phase 2: Survey of current industryemployees in strategic occupations andlabour market cohorts to identify theirperceptions on career development as ameans of providing a sound foundationfor the creation of recruitment andretention programs at the company, sector, and industry levels. The surveyreplicated many of the questions asked inthe survey conducted in 2009, as well asadding several new questions (forexample, the use of social media).

Phase 3: Demographic analysis of theindustry’s work force (the census)based on data supplied by individualcompanies and associations. This “census”

of the industry's work force replicated thework first carried out in 2007–2008. In thefirst census, the data collected enabledforecasting of retirement projections forthe industry’s labour force to 2017. Withthis study, we will compare the projectionswith the reality in 2012 and makeprojections to 2022.

“We are confident that this third researchstudy will once again provide valuableinformation to our stakeholders and theindustry,” says Peter Hohman, Presidentand CEO of the Institute.

In the first quarter of 2013, a seriesof CIP Society PROedge seminars will takeplace across the country in nine cities toshare the results and insight of theresearch.

This event is set to attract over200 students from post-secondaryinstitutions across the region and will behosted at our 18 King St. E. offices inToronto.

Social Media

The conversations Career Connections ishaving with student and career-seekeraudiences across the country have nowgone social! We are excited to havelaunched a series of new content assets, including an interactive quiz, revampedcareer profiles with shareable postcards, and a career map on our Web site(www.career-connections.info) this fall.We have also set up channels on majorsocial media platforms, including apresence on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIN.

Over the course of the Fall Campaign, wehave been piloting the integration ofsocial media into our outreach on campusand in the community. The results havebeen positive, and we look forward toexpanding our use of these tools overthe remainder of the campaign!

These initiatives are a part of theInsurance Institute’s overarching socialmedia strategy and were recentlyhighlighted at the Annual GeneralMeeting in October. Watch for moredetails in the coming weeks about oursocial media presence.

Demographic Research Study—Wrap-Up!

The Insurance Institute is in the process ofcompiling and analyzing the data for the2012 demographic research study, fiveyears after the first study was conducted.

As we hope you know, the Institutepublished the landmark research study“A Demographic Analysis of the P&CInsurance Industry in Canada: 2007–2017”in 2008 and then a second researchstudy, “A Demographic Analysis – Part II:Recruitment and Retention Issues in theP&C Insurance Industry in Canada, 2009.”They are available to download atwww.insuranceinstitute.ca > Research.

The 2012 research study has consisted ofthree sequential phases taking place overan 18-month period, with a final report tobe published in December 2012:

Phase 1: Survey of senior humanresource professionals (employers) inCanada’s property and casualty insurance

The FCIP Program: Room to Grow

instructs on leadership style andmanagement leadership skills.”

His mother was aninvestment banker; his father, an entrepreneur.Maurice completed most of his schoolingin Canada, but when his parents’ workoccasioned a transfer to the United Kingdom,

he returned to the UK and attended schoolfor two years in Surrey, England, just southof London. Returning to Canada at the ageof 15, he went on to complete high schoolin Markham. From there, it was on to theUniversity of Waterloo, from which hegraduated in 1991 with a degree ineconomics.

At first, Maurice aspired to work for the Bankof Canada or else one of the large charteredbanks. Unfortunately, the early 1990s were atime of fierce recession, and jobs for newgraduates were scarce. After four months as“a very junior bond trader,” Maurice beganto cast about for more congenial and stablework. As it happened, a friend had recentlybeen hired at The Pilot Insurance Companyin Toronto, part of the General AccidentInsurance Company of Canada and one ofthe heritage companies that would give riseto today’s Aviva in 2003.

In 1992, Maurice was hired into theAccounting department. He had never somuch as taken a class in accounting, so hisnew role was quite a departure for him.Wasting no time, Maurice began the fouryears of night school that would lead him tohis designation as a Certified ManagementAccountant (CMA). Meanwhile, he roserapidly through the ranks at Pilot, becomingController in just six years. In 1997, hemoved to Elite Insurance as Vice President. There, he oversaw a doubling of Elite’s grosswritten premium from $50 million to about$100 million in just two years.
