Aquarium tunnel

It is a construction that provides the most efficient way to

create the illusion of actual presence under the water,

without sinking into it. Observing fishes and other aquatic

life representatives from within is a truly unique spectacle!

Sharks, floating closer than three metres above your

head, look impressive and a little intimidating. Aquarium

tunnel is suitable for both freshwater and sea water environment. There was even a tunnel designed for

open water. In 2007 the Hydrosight company was asked to develop the longest acrylic tunnel on an artificial

island off the coast of Dubai. The aim of the project was to revive the traditions, relating to pearl industry in

UAE (United Arab Emirates). The visitors of the tunnel are able to observe the underwater life, as if they

were pearl divers, passing through the acrylic tunnel under the sea into the pearl divers marinas. Marine myths and legends of Dubai region are also

replicated.

These tunnels consist of acrylic panels, which are bent in special huge furnaces. Aquarium tunnel may have a radius of 180 angle degrees or more

and represent rectangular or any other shape.

Cylindrical aquarium tunnel

Tunnels, as a rule, are cylindrical constructions. The most common tunnels have a constant radius and cover 180 angle degrees. These tunnels can

have edges to form the turnings inside the oceanarium.

In fact, when being in the tunnel, visitors are visually staying under the water, in whatever direction

they might look; they see only water and inhabitants of the aquarium, getting the illusion of presencein the underwater world. In certain areas, the construction of the tunnel may include an overview

beyond 180 angle degrees, giving the panoramic view. This type of construction requires special

mounting coordinations.

Optimized Aquariumtunnel

There is another altrenative to design the tunnel, besides cylindrical structures. Since the water

pressure in the upper part of the tunnel is less than in the lower part, the acrylic windows of the

construction can be differential, optimizing the tunnel sections and putting it into elliptical shape. When

the tunnel of the cylindrical shape is extended, the upper part of the construction (the ceiling) is

higher. If the top of the tunnel is too high above the heads of people in the tunnel, the feeling of being under the water disappears. Optimization of

the tunnel makes it possible to bring the top of the tunnel closer to the visitors, giving the unique feeling of being "at the bottom of the sea. A

properly designed and optimized form of the tunnel can reduce pressure and mobility of acrylic tunnel, so that the effective thickness is less, and

therefore it will reduce expenditures and improve aesthetic look. The optimized design is more suitable for excessively broad sections of the tunnelwith lesser water masses pressing on the top (roof) parts.

The optimized tunnel may be used in different parts of aquatic exposition, and its design will depend on the width and depth. However, this type of

design is best for broad areas, where the volume of water is not that large.

Rectangular aquarium tunnel

Tunnels may be rectangular. This is a more expensive alternate design, as acryl has to be much thicker than in the cylindrical or optimized

embodiment, since a greater load presses against the elements. The rectangular shape also presupposes less extensive field of view. In contrast to

the curved tunnel structures, which suggest a panoramic view, flat panels of rectangular tunnel do not allow for the full-sized overlook, since the

inhabitants have to bend around the corners of the acrylic panels, situated on different planes. Due to these disadvantages, the rectangular tunnels

are not the prime choice of architects, who project aquariums.

Cylindrical aquariumsThere is a stereotype that aquariums regularly have rectangular or square shape, but with the help of

the latest technology and due to the characteristics of acrylic material, you can create single-seam

and double-seam cylindrical and round aquariums, which allow for all-round field of vision. Visually

the seams are not seen. The size of such aquariums depends only on your needs and desires, that

is, no limitation in size. The thickness of the tankwalls is selected to provide maximum safety within

the given volume of aquarium. But there are optimum dimensions suggested: up to 2000 mm in height

and 1200 in diameter, 1800 mm in height and 2700 mm in diameter. Such tanks are light, relatively

inexpensive, not limited by size and highly resistant to water load in comparison with rectangular

aquariums of the same volume.

Acrylic panels: advantages and fields of application

Acrylic panels are more transparent than glass is and are used as an alternative to traditional melted glass. When it comes to the pressure of water,

the acrylic panels are superior, because they are less fragile and can withstand heavier loads. These panels have a transparency degree of about

92%, being the most transparent material and even surpassing glass. That is why acryl is the unique material for underwater glazing.

Acrylic panels have the following advantages:

high transparency, with no distortion

easy maintenance and cleaning

extremely high impact resistance

good thermal insulation

light weight of the construction

excellent stability to weather conditions

predictable long-term behavior

moderate dimensional tolerances

ability of being formedscratches can be polished

ability of being colour stained and transported

Acrylic panels are molded within standard dimensions. Still, it is possible to combine several panels on a cer tain demand in the course of the process

called gluing, or to use panels of oversized dimensions that are casted on demand. We recommend to use standard size panels as a possible

starting point for your construction project. This will help you to stay within the planned budget.
