3 Fundamental Questions
• What opportunity is available to me or to my organization now?
• Who is that opportunity asking me/us to be?
• What is that opportunity asking me/us to do?
4
Leadership and Coaching Hand in Hand
“Coaching” in the next 20 years
has the opportunity and responsibility to shape our world going forward—
to expand and evolve leadership so that, together, we might create a world that works.
5
Leadership and Coaching Hand in Hand
As coaches, it’s not about telling clients, leaders, organizations,
and societal systems what to think.
It’s about inviting them into new ways of thinking—helping them expand how they think,
expand their awareness.
As how we think and perceive transforms, as our awareness shifts and expands,
so does our world.
6
Leadership and Coaching Hand in Hand
What we create, in turn, creates us.
Leadership and Coaching in the next 20 years:
• Stretching our capacities for awareness and understanding
• Closing the gap between what we know and how we live
7
From Transactional To Transformational
Transactional Approach • Intention: get a result or accomplish a goal • Focus: short-term problem solving and solutions
Transformational Approach • Intention: 1) discover what wants to happen
2) make the shifts in perception that can lead to sustainable changes & results 3) take action aligned with discovery & perception
• Focus: bigger picture and potential
8
The Evolution of TransformAction
Transactional approach — Transformational approach ê
TransformActional approach
9
TransformAction
TransformAction = the ability to learn a new skill, gain a new insight, sense a new path or direction, or transform understanding, and immediately move into action
TransformAction = transformation in action
There is no gap. Insight and action become one gesture.
10
TransformAction
TransformAction = an essential leadership skill in a rapidly changing world
It’s a dynamic and intuitive process. It begins with expanding our awareness, how we think, how we perceive, and our fundamental worldviews.
Institute of HeartMathwww.heartmath.org
11
5-step process that happens in one moment: 1] Perceive what is happening at the core level—drop beneath the form or story to the energy 2] Recognize the potential waiting to unfold—big picture view 3] Intuit the energy shifts that could bring that potential to life—form follows energy 4] Let those energy shifts happen—co-create with the potential 5] Move forward in action with what wants to happen
12
TransformAction
TransformAction
• A learned & practiced way of living & working
• An art that lives where being and action meet
• Brings together intuitive perception with the hard skills necessary for taking immediate and effective action
13
Leadership and Coaching Capacities
• Awareness on multiple levels— > awareness of what is obvious and what is hidden > awareness of what is happening around us & within us > awareness of our own presence in the moment
• Understanding how life works as energy in motion • Hold complexity and cut to the core or essence—
transformation happens from the inside out • Discovery, creativity, innovation, “dancing in the moment” • Supporting others wherever they are • Meeting whatever comes from clarity, trust, and confidence
14
4 Stages of Leadership Development
1] Choose the leader(s) you will follow
2] Become the leader of your own life
3] Lead others
4] Follow the emerging potential
Leadership Coaching in a rapidly changing world = helping those we serve develop and expand capacities for: • Following the potential • Letting the future show the way
15
Evolution of Our Relationship to Power
1] Power over 2] Power with 3] Riding the wave of power
16
3 Fundamental Principles
[1]
Everything is energy in motion, a process unfolding. [2]
Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transformed.
[3]
The universe is built on a matrix of relationships. Everything is interconnected.
17
Fundamental Awareness
Exercise:
“Push Against” or “Flow With”
18
Fundamental Awareness
A problem is not something to be solved;
it is a message to be listened to.
When we view something as a problem, it stops the energy and we push against.
When we view it as an opportunity,
the energy starts to flow again.
19
Choosing a Co-Creative Paradigm
Opposition Paradigm or Co-Creative Paradigm Push Against or Flow With
In our culture, we are conditioned to “push against.”
The opportunity is to learn to “flow with.”
20
3 Fundamental Questions
[1] What wants to happen?
[2]
Who is that asking me to be? [3]
What is that asking me to do?
21
Kokoro
Kokoro—“mind, heart, spirit”
Who do we need to be or to become if we want to be TransformActional coaches and leaders?
22
4 Prototypes
Seer Perceives with the intuitive mind, seeing beyond the obvious
Explorer
Walks into the unknown and trusts that “signs” will appear to show where to go next
Co-Creator
Partners with people and ideas for new creation
Ambassador Builds bridges of understanding and awareness
23
Seer
The first step in TransformAction is to learn to see and perceive in more expanded ways.
Naming Exercise—Part I
Look Around & Name Describe
24
Seer
“You can’t really see something until you can forget its name.”
Most of us tend to “look” but not “see.” We see concepts, not specifics, not energy.
We see what we think.
We see what we have context or understanding for.We see what we look for, not what is actually there.
Cows on the island.
25
Seer
Becoming a Seer: • Be curious. Step beyond your own context. Let things
show themselves to you on their own terms. • Let go of your own interpretations and meanings
and see what there is to discover. • Allow what you are looking at to surprise you—
to be different from what you expected. • Use your “intuitive sight” to see beyond the limits
of habitual thinking, present knowledge, and accepted beliefs.
26
Seer
A Seer… • Understands that everything is energy in motion;
therefore, perceives beyond the surface • Engages both inner and outer senses • Looks for patterns • Senses the energy in the relationship space • Intuits how one thing fits together with another • Peers deeply into the present moment
to discover the future that is waiting to unfold
27
Seer
Mindfulness
Breathing Into the Moment
28
Seer
Naming Exercise—Part 2
Look Around & Discover (Resist the temptation to “name”)
Describe
29
Seer
To “see” is to be present in the moment and to be aware that there are many layers
in what is happening.
At the same time, the more present you are, the more you “see.”
Being fully present and “seeing” go hand in hand.
It’s a practice.
30
Seer
Everything is energy in motion; a process unfolding.
Form comes out of energy. Particle comes out of wave.
Circumstances are manifestations of energy patterns.
Where is the energy moving?Where is the energy stuck?
What is the message?
31
Seer
The most efficient, effective,
and sustainable way to create lasting change is to work first at the energy level—
to sense what wants to happen at the energy level and help facilitate those shifts.
32
Explorer
• Goes places where no one has gone before • Is accustomed to stepping into the unknown • Uses Seer skills to “read” the environment • Trusts that “signs” will appear to show
the next step • Welcomes the new frontier
33
Explorers Learn Forward
• Let life show itself rather than assuming you already know (Seer)
• Have an experience before you give it meaning • Meet new situations with curiosity and
an attitude of discovery • Accept that your new learning may be a new
context or reference point for going forward
34
Explorer
Albert Einstein
The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education.
Eric Hoffer
(20th-century American moral & social philosopher)
In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped
to deal with a world that no longer exists.
35
Explorer
We don’t grow towards what we already know. We grow towards new understanding and awareness.
From there, we co-create instead of repeat.
36
The Trap of “How?”
“How?” is not something we know before we start.
It’s something we discover and create as we go.
What would you do if you didn’t have to know how?
37
The Deep Simple—A Path For Co-Creation
38
1] What are 3 things you know to be true?
2] Which of those 3 things holds the greatest power for us to explore right now?
3] With that thing that holds the power, what wants to shift?
4] Who is that shift asking you to be? What role is it asking you to play?
5] What is one step you can take now to begin moving towards that shift?
(back to #1)
Ambassador
An Ambassador is a host, inviting others to discover and experience something new—a new culture, a new
way of doing things, a new way of being.
An Ambassador is often in a foreign land, and must speak the local language to be able to create a bridge to a new or different approach.
Ambassadors are bridge-builders.
39
Ambassador
Our powerful questions become invitations into new perspectives and approaches. We don’t tell those we serve what to think. We invite them into new ways of thinking and perceiving. We offer them new tools and skills that build capacities. We build bridges to new ways of perceiving and engaging both their inner and outer worlds. We invite them to become TransformActional.
40
Ambassador
How are you currently a bridge for those you serve? What is the bridge that you could be—the next stretch for you with those you serve? What is the commitment it’s now time to make?
41
The Future of Coaching
Help those you serve develop their capacity for TransformAction. TransformAction can become a way of life. It can shape how we navigate our most important relationships, how we raise our children, how we work with colleagues, how we lead a project or organization, how we govern, and how we empower global initiatives.

43
TransformAction
We are living in amazing times. Sense the potential. Let it show you what it needs and your next step towards bringing it to reality. Be the person it is asking you to be and take the action it asks you for. The future of coaching and leadership begins with all of us right here, right now.
