The next generation of Doosan’s multi-tasking mill-turncentres - the SMX 3100 and the SMX 3100S – are nowbeing held in-stock at the Mills CNC Technology Campus.

The new SMX 3100 range, first shown at MACH 2014 onMills’ stand and subsequently at EMO 2015, represent areal step-change in technology, ergonomic design andperformance over the company’s previous MX-series ofmill-turn machines.

Currently there are two different SMX 3100 models beingstocked by Mills – both feature a 12/15” chuck/102mm bardiameter capacity, and have a maximum turning diameterof 660mm and turning length of 1500mm.

SMX 3100 and 3100S machines are also equipped with a26/30kW 4,000 main spindle, a swing arm 40 tool positionfront-mounted ATC (80 position option), a 30kW12,000rpm Capto C6 milling spindle, and have anintegrated B-axis (240 degrees), C-axis (0.0001degrees),and Y-axis (+/- 150mm) capability.

The SMX 3100 is supplied with a programmable tailstock(1562mm quill travel) and is prepared and configured toaccept a SLU5 servo-driven steady rest.

The SMX 3100S is the sub-spindle model variant and isequipped with a second (RH) 26kW 4000rpm spindlecapable of synchronised machining.

High-productivity through multi-tasking functionality SMX 3100 machines enable manufacturers to machinehigh-precision, complex parts in reduced set-ups.

The machines’ rigid design and build combined with theirhigh-speed/high-torque spindle capability enables theSMX 3100’s to perform a comprehensive range ofroughing and finishing operations (turning, end-milling,face-milling, tapping drilling etc.), reliably and with highprecision.

The machines, with their orthogonal design, also featurean extended Y-axis stroke and an increased machiningarea and turning diameter to handle/machine large work-pieces.

Improved part accuracies and repeatability’sSMX 3100 machines are high-precision mill-turn machinesequipped with integrated spindles and ball screw corecooling systems that minimise thermal distortion and helpimprove high accuracy positioning.

Thermal displacement is also controlled by the machines’integrated thermal compensation system.

The system measures temperature variations continuously(in real time during machining) via 6 sensors and uses anon-board thermal compensation algorithm in themachines’ CNC control to make the required adjustmentsto offset the impact of thermal growth and distortion.

The machines also feature SP-class roller type LM guidesfor high positioning accuracy and which helpmanufacturers to perform heavy-duty machiningoperations employing high axis feed rates.

Ergonomically soundThe SMX 3100 series was thewinner of the 2014 internationalRed Dot Award for ProductDesign.

Careful consideration (at themachine design stage) of theoperator’s working environment and analysis of his/heractivities e.g. work-piece loading/unloading, job set-up,monitoring, maintenance etc., has resulted in aestheticallyand ergonomically superior machines.

The user-friendly lay-out of the control panel andimproved accessibility of the machines’ front-mounted ATCmakes job and tool set-up easy and straightforward.

Says Mills’ technical director, Tony Dale:

“The SMX 3100 machines are stylish, sleek and look thepart.

“The machines are real high performers capable ofmachining a wide variety of parts in one hit.

“Everything about the SMX 3100 series exudes quality, accuracy and productivity – and I’m confident that themachine, backed by Mills’ first-class applications andtechnical support services, will prove popular withprecision manufacturers everywhere.”

Market reaction to new SMX 3100machines.At the time of going to press - six newSMX machines have been sold to date inthe UK and Ireland.

uncoveredthe secrets...

There’s something new and different for customers and visitors to see andexperience at Mills CNC’s Technology Campus.

The company has recently created, within its Showroom and MachiningDemonstration area - a new, modern and purpose-built Control Centre facilitywhere visitors can, using the latest interactive touch screen technology, learn moreabout the different Fanuc, Heidenhain and Siemens CNC Control Systems andintegrated conversational programming software, available on Doosan machines.

The Control Centre provides a quiet, informal and practical learning environment –away from, although adjacent to, Mills’ busy Machine Tool Showroom.

Explains Technical Director, Tony Dale:

“The Control Centre enhances the customer experience.

“When a customer arranges a machining demonstration at the Campus it’s notuncommon for a number of their production staff turn up.

“Whilst this isn’t a problem per se, it can result in four or five people peering (oftenover each other’s shoulders) at the machine’s control – not that ideal for thepeople at the back of the group.

“Now, by using the Control Centre, we can take customers into a dedicatedlearning environment away from the hustle and bustle of the demonstration area, and go through the different machine tool control options with them using thelarge 65” interactive touch screen.”

The Control Centre is particularly useful tohelp explain to those customers, unfamiliarwith conversational programming softwaresuch as Manual Guide and ShopMill, thefeatures, benefits and intricacies of thesesystems.

VCF 850 machines are large capacity vertical machiningcentres with a B-axis head which can tilt 110 degrees oneither side of vertical, enabling them to machine large andcomplex parts in a single setup, eliminating costly fixturesand associated downtime. Their tilting head capability inconjunction with their 500mm or 800mm diameter rotarytable (depending on table configuration) means that up tofive sides of a part can be accessed.

The VCF 850 machines have a rigid, one-piece, fine-grainMeehanite bed with heavy ribbing to reduce vibration anddeformation during heavy cutting operations – therebyimproving accuracy, surface finish and tool life.

Owing to their travelling column design the table, andtherefore the work-piece itself, remains locked duringmachining. This ensures a uniform load to the guide-ways,ball screws, and motors.

All machine axes are of a roller linear-motion guide type(rather than the more common ball bearing guide types),delivering higher stiffness, increased accuracy andimproved surface finishes. (Roller guide-ways are threetimes more rigid than, and twice as durable as, ballbearing guide-ways, and help optimise weight and forcedistribution).

Each axis is driven by a high-precision double nut ballscrew that is centered between the guide-ways andsupported on both ends by angular contact thrustbearings, and all ball screws are cooled by circulated, refrigerated oil (as are other critical components includingthe ball nut, support bearings and the motor housing).

This system, coupled with a double pretension design, provides outstanding positional repeatability with virtuallyno thermal growth. All axes also have large diameter ballscrews that are directly connected to oversize A.C. servodrive motors without gears or belts in order to helpeliminate backlash.

The X, Y, and Z axes on the machines use absolute-typelinear glass scales for higher positional accuracy. Thesescales virtually eliminate the impact of slides and ballscrew thermal expansion and backlash. This improves theability to hold tight part tolerances requiring fewer offsetchanges.

The machines are equipped with a Doosan rotary table(either embedded or top-mounted) that enablesmachining on multiple faces of the work-piece withouthaving to re-fixture.

Cutting performance is provided by a powerful, high-torque 18.5kW/22kW 12,000rpm built-in oil cooled spindle(204 N-m). The refrigerated cooling-control systemcirculates cooling oil around the spindle in order tomaintain a constant temperature, increasing accuracyregardless of ambient temperatures.

The machines feature the dual contact tooling (Big Plus)system which helps reduce vibrations during the cuttingprocess thereby improving part accuracies and surfacefinishes, and, increasing tool life.

The system is supported by high precision permanentlylubricated ceramic ball bearings which help deliverimpressive spindle acceleration / deceleration times. Anencoder is attached to the spindle to allow rigid tapping, further increasing the machines’ productivity.

VCF 850 5AX machines have a choice of tool changersystems. A 30-position drum-type tool magazine issupplied as standard and a 60-tool, chain-type double-armautomatic tool changer is also available as an option. Tool-to-tool changeover time is 1.5 seconds.

The inclusion of a separate pickup magazine capable ofholding 5 long, large tools (up to 450mm in length and150mm in tool diameter), increases the machines’ versatility.

Further versatility is provided by the machines’ large X-axistravel (3 metres) and multi-vice chucking capability. Toexploit this potential a partition is located within themachining area which separates the cutting area from theset-up area thereby increasing productivity.

Mills CNC has announced that its best-selling DNM Mark IIrange of Doosan 3-axis vertical machining centres is nowavailable with the powerful Siemens 828D CNC controlsystem and Shopmill, Siemens’ conversationalprogramming software.

In a phased introduction of the new machines into theUK, Mills will be first bringing in Siemens-controlled DNM400 II and DNM 500 II models as stock machines from thesummer with DNM 650 II machines becoming availablelater in the year.

The introduction of the new Siemens-controlledmachines will further increase the attractiveness ofDoosan’s DNM Mk II range of machines to those UK andIrish precision component manufacturers who, in thepast, decided against acquiring a Doosan verticalmachining centre because it could not be supplied withtheir preferred (Siemens) control.

This move by Mills will enable the company to penetratethe Siemens CNC control user market that was hithertoout of reach and, more importantly, will mean that thesemanufacturers no longer need to compromise when itcomes to investing in a high-quality, ultra-reliable andcost-competitive 3-axis machining centre.

Says Kevin Gilbert, Mills CNC’s Managing Director:

“Doosan is an innovative and pro-active company. When

it sees a gap in the market it quickly mobilises itsextensive R & D,production and logisticsoperations to fill it.

“A few years ago Doosanlaunched and begansupplying Siemenscontrolled lathes andmachining centres to markets in Asia and Europe (mostnotably Germany).

“The steady growth in demand for Siemens controlledmachines here in the UK and Ireland has been the catalystbehind us stocking these machines – starting withDoosan 3-axis machining centres.

“Naturally we are confident that we will soon be acquiringand growing share of the Siemens’ user market as aconsequence.”

To help Mills achieve these ambitions, the company hasrecently created a new resource at its Technology Campusfacility in Leamington.

The aptly-named ‘Control Centre’ is a dedicated discretefacility located in Mills’ machine tool demonstration areathat will be used to help visitors and customersunderstand more about the different CNC control system

options (e.g. Fanuc, Heidenhain and Siemens), availableon Doosan machines.

Using the latest Hi-Tec interactive large touch screentechnology customers can learn all about the strengths and nuances of each control, and start exploring the

relative merits of each controls’ onboard softwaresolutions like Fanuc Manual Guide i, Siemens Shopmilland Heidenhain conversational programming systems.
