We had some amazing February days that perhaps will be sign of an early spring. I always like the month of March because it holds the promise of milder weather and disappearing snow just around the corner!

Report Cards are going home on Wednesday, March 15th, followed by Student Led Conferences in the evening of Thursday, March 16th and all day on Friday, March 17th. Student Led Conferences provide an opportunity for children to demonstrate their learning and understanding to you. You will have an opportunity to see classroom work and have a discussion with your child about goals and next steps in learning. As always, I encourage you to speak with teachers at any time outside of these conferences to discuss your children’s learning at school.

Thanks to everyone who was able to support the PAC Read-A-Thon fundraiser last month. Your assistance in their fundraising efforts ensures that we can provide many additional activities, events and equipment for Glenelm kids. With the help of the Parent Council, Manitoba Theatre for Young People came last month to perform for our students and soon local musician Lindsey White will be working with Glenelm kids on song writing for Music Month in May! The money from this recent fundraiser will pay for the many activities for all children at the school BBQ and upcoming fieldtrips for all classes. Thanks again for your support, none of this would take place without these fundraisers and your participation.

I appreciate that Glenelm children are keeping safe by staying off the snow banks between the streets and sidewalks on their way to and from school. Please reinforce this safety message with them as it is important that everyone stay on the sidewalks and cross streets only where there are patrols. The roadways around the school continue to be quite icy (especially after the recent freezing and thawing activity). I still see traffic sliding and having difficulty stopping in many places. The breaks in cold have created some treacherous roads so it is wise to be extra safe at this time.

As part of school safety, we will have a lockdown practice on Monday, March 20th. All schools must practice lockdowns and fire drill procedures a number of times throughout the school year. This will be our second practise for Glenelm and we will have one more before the end of June.

The month ends with Spring Break and the last day of classes will be on Friday March 24th. School will resume on Monday April 3rd.

Science: DINOSAURS

Social Studies: All About Me

Math: Numbers in Our World. Looking for numbers in our environment and talking about the importance of numbers in our life (birthdates, age, calendars, time, house numbers, phone numbers, maps…)

Student-Led Conferences: March 16 evening and March 17 all day.

Nursery and Kindergarten children will be sharing artwork, writing and involving you in a few math activities. There will be time for you to talk to the teacher.

Spring Break: March 25-April 2. Back to school April 3.

Grade 1– MRS. S. KOZAK

I am so proud of all the books that we read for our “in-class” literacy challenge this past month! All students surpassed their

personal goal of reading 100 books during school hours. The effort that was shown was consistent and quite remarkable.

Students received their special “reading buddy” stuffed animal for all their hard work! Bravo!

We are now officially past the half way mark for Grade 1. Students will be busy preparing for Student Led Conferences taking

place this month and choosing their best work to highlight for you. Be ready to be impressed, there is a lot to be proud of!

March Programming:

Reading: Dr. Suess book study, rhyming and fun with words.

Writing: Adding more detail to writing, using an editing checklist.

Math: Subtraction

Science: Characteristics of Objects and Materials.

Social Studies: Building our 3 dimensional community class project.

Health: Dental Health

Art: Drama activities/games in small groups, Dr. Suess art activities.

Thank you to parents who baked/donated goodies for our Valentine’s party in February!

Please continue to use and enjoy the Dreambox math program at home. If you are having any problems with your child accessing

this program at home, please give me a call at school! The activities are very beneficial and reinforce essential math skills.

CLASSROOM NEWS...

Grade 2—MS. A. MORTON February has been very exciting and fun as we learned about Festival du Voyageur and Voyageurs as part of our Social Studies. The students finished their non-fiction writing about Winter Break and they each presented their story. The students set the criteria for what a good presentation should look like and sound like (book like with pictures and matching the words with fluent smooth reading).

We celebrated Festival du Voyageur week by making canoes, wigwams and dressing as a voyageur. We were treated to bannock as part of our I Love to Read theme.

In Science, we are finishing our unit on Position and Motion. We have explored how simple machines have been invented to make our lives easier. We have discussed and participated in experiments dealing with force, gravity and friction. We also integrated Art with our splatter paint Art.

This month we will be reading books by Canadian authors Ted Harrison and Michael Kusugak. We will also study their particular and varied art styles.

The Grade 2 students will be learning about non-standard numbers, money, and working on solving subtraction problems. In Math students need to practice doubles to 10 (4+4, 6+6, 10+10) and their facts to 18. These doubles will help immensely in the learning of the facts to 18. Many students would benefit from practising counting backwards from 100 from any number and also counting backwards from various multiples (2s – 34, 32, 30, 28; and by 5s – 70,65,60).

After Spring Break on Thursday April 6th we will be going to The Mint and the Science Gallery (in the Manitoba Museum) for our

first field trip of the year. If anyone would like to volunteer and bring their vehicle, please contact me. You can call the school and

leave a message at 204- 667- 8534 or write a note in your child’s agenda.

Grade 3– MRS. E. MULVENNA

February was a fun month in Room 5! The class had a great time at our Valentine’s Day party! Thank you to everyone who brought in treats for the class. The yummy snacks were enjoyed by all!

Students are currently typing the final draft of their fairy tale stories in Language Arts. Everyone is doing an excellent job of writing detailed and creative stories. Throughout March students will work on writing an “About the Author” page as well as completing the illustrations for their stories. Students are very excited to share their stories at the upcoming Student Led conferences.

In math we will continue our study of division throughout March. Students have done an excellent job learning their multiplication facts and this has helped them understand the connection between multiplication and division. After we finish up our unit on division students will begin learning about fractions!

In Science our bridge building is underway and we are almost ready to test the strength of our bridges! Students worked so hard constructing their bridges out of a variety of materials. After we complete our bridge strength tests we will begin a new unit about Plants and Soil!

On March 3rd our class will travel to the Manitoba Museum to participate in the Ancient Egypt program. The students will learn about the mummification process, Ancient Egyptian society and about hieroglyphs. Students will also learn about forces and magnets during a demonstration in the Science Gallery. I am sure the students are going to really enjoy this hands on learning experience!

I hope to see everyone at the upcoming Student Led Conferences on March 16th and 17th!

Grade 5/6– MR. M. CAMERON

This month we have been learning lots of stuff and doing lots of fun activities.

In Science, we have been learning about simple machines and how they work. We made a marble run. We got to present

at this month’s assembly, in which we showed the school various things we’ve learning about simple machines. That’s it

for Science!

Now we are going to talk about Math. In Math, we’ve been learning three strategies; the area model, doubling and

halving, and distributive property. We use these strategies when multiplying.

In Story time, we have been reading the book called; The Long Winter, by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Three of the most fun highlights of the month have been the Valentines party, our Health

Fair and the Winter Fun Day. For the Valentines party, we ate treats and watched a movie

called; Racing Stripes”. Winter Fun Day was really fun. We got to choose between going

sledding, skating or hockey. After the activity we all got to have some hot chocolate.

February went by quickly in Room One. We were able to accomplished a great deal of learning and covered a lot of material.

Students presented their presenta!ons on a Canadian World War I ba"le. Many students

went above and beyond by providing both a slideshow presenta!on and a diorama. Next up,

World War II.

In Science we con!nued learning about fluids and forces that affect movement through fluids.

We built up to a design project where students constructed paper airplanes and parachutes.

They will be tes!ng their models in the near future.

In Math we moved through our decimal unit and started to work on Frac!ons. So far I have

found the class to be quite strong at math. That said, students are working on showing their

work consistently, and find new ways of solving problems.

In ELA our focus con!nues to be on wri!ng. We s!ll had plenty of !me for reading and working towards our 'I Love to Read

Month' pledges, but the focus of my instruc!on lately has been literary devices and persuasive wri!ng pieces.

February also saw the introduc!on of the educa!on app known as Seesaw. Students use it to record and save their work,

comment on pictures, view videos or links I choose for them, as well as respond to Math and wri!ng/grammar ques!ons. It

allows me to see their answers and respond to their issues in real !me. They are building digital por&olios which they will be

able to share at student led conferences. More informa!on is to follow at that point.

MUSIC ROOM

Grades 4, 5 and 6 students are in full swing learning their parts for

the Spring Musical “Pirates”! Some students are busy working on

props, others are learning percussion parts, lines and songs!

Grades 2 and 3 students are focusing on sharing their personal

thoughts about the various songs they hear during music class.

Kindergarten and grade 1 students are sharing their musical

ideas while exploring and expressing their feelings while singing

and dancing.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

FRENCH ROOM

MRS. S. JONES

Students are using their French classes to learn their

parts for the musical. After the musical students will

pick up where they left off, focusing on the verb Aller

(to go) and “la salle de classe”. We will use music

classes to catch up on the French time used while

rehearsing for the musical.

Winter Fun Day took place in February and it was lots of fun! Students were able to go sledding or skating in the neighbourhood. A couple great ways to be active in the winter! During Phys. Ed classes, students worked on their basketball skills. They also played tag and fitness games.

In March, spongee polo starts for any students in grades 1, 2 and 3 that would like to play during

the lunch hour. Grade 5 and 6 students will be the referees. In class, students will participate in a skipping/jump rope unit. A great fitness workout! Students in room 1 will be designing their own games to play with the other students in the school.

RESOURCE

February was I Love to Read month and our theme was Voyageurs and the Metis Nation. Thank you to Sunshine Allen who came in to help students make bannock. It was a tasty treat. You will find the recipe below. Thanks also to teachers, parents and the Parent Advisory Council for supporting and encouraging reading this month!

Reading is a crucial skill for people to develop. Kids are sometimes reluctant to read with parents at home and the “fight to read” is hard on parent-kid relationship. It takes dedicated time. Find something your child is interested in. (Comics, fact books, fiction). Consider sharing the text—child reads one page/line, parent reads the next. Consider making it part of a visual routine, it’s as important as brushing teeth. If your child is reluctant to read at home, keep the reading time short, enjoyable, consistent and part of family life.

Routines are REALLY important for children and parents. The only problem is kids often tune out adult voices. So, what can parents do?

Visual schedules give kids one more way to receive your message. For younger children who cannot read, the visuals should be pictures. For children who read, the visuals can be a written list. Keep the visuals short, four or five steps. Teach the visuals by DOING the routine with the child. Show the child what you want and what you do not want. Praise them for each step completed. Work on only one routine at a time. Pictures can be found online or you can take pictures of your child doing the routine and use those. Kids LOVE to see themselves on visual schedules. Here is an example of a visual schedule we use in Nursery/Kindergarten.

Baked Bannock

3 cups flour

3 Tablespoons baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon sugar

1 ¼ cup water

Mix dry ingredients together. Make a well in the middle. Pour water into well and mix gently until dough sticks together. (add a little more water if necessary) Use hands to gently mix dough

Lay onto a greased pan and knead into an oval shape

Prick all over with a fork

Bake in oven at 425 for 18 minutes

Let bannock cool slightly but when it is still warm, spread butter onto the tops and sides.

PATROLS AND EXTREME WIND CHILL:

On days where the outside temperature with wind chill reaches minus 35 or greater, patrols will not be on duty. We use Environment Canada The Forks Information as our guide.


STUDENT VOICE

Thanks, Rm 6 for patrolling during the month of February! We appreciate your willingness to go out there every day to make sure everyone gets home safely.

Parents of patrols, please note that we will be trying a new system of scheduling for the next while. Instead of rotating between the 2 classrooms each month, we are going to try rotating in 2 week blocks. So during the first two weeks of March, the Rm 1 class will patrol, and then the Rm 6 class will patrol the following two weeks.

As always; patrols need to be at their post by 8:40 am and 12:40 pm. On-duty patrols need to wear their vest and have flags with them. A reminder once again; that flag poles are only for use at the post, not for playing or poking in the snow! Also, patrols are responsible for finding a replacement IF, they are going to be absent.

Any questions or concerns can be forwarded to Mr. Cameron in Rm 1, or Ms. Barkman in Rm 6.

PATROLS

This month saw the successful 'Dress Like a Voyageur' Spirit Day. Thank you to all who participated. The next Spirit Day will be March 16th, but the theme has yet to be decided. Also, we are looking into some small fundraiser options to help raise some funds for Winnipeg Harvest. Look for details to be sent out some time in the coming weeks.

KINDERGARTEN AND NURSERY

REGISTRATION

We are accepting registrations for our nursery and kindergarten programs. Children who will be four years of age on or before December 31, 2017 are eligible for the nursery class (afternoons from 1:00 to 3:30). Children who will be five years of age on or before December 31, 2017 are eligible for kindergarten class (mornings from 9:00 to 11:30).

If you already have children attending Glenelm you must contact the school office to enroll younger siblings. They are not automatically enrolled.

Both the nursery and kindergarten programs run from September to June. Please call the school at 204-667-8534 to find out more information about our registration process. If you know someone in the community who doesn’t receive this newsletter, please pass along the message to them about registration.

When our nursery and kindergarten programs have been full we have not been able to accept any students from outside our catchment area. If nursery/kindergarten registrations are lower this year, we may be able to accept some students from outside our immediate catchment area.

Note to parents and guardians of current Glenelm Nursery Students: Current Glenelm nursery students are automatically enrolled into kindergarten for the 2016/2017 school year at Glenelm School. No registration is required. If your child will not be attending kindergarten at Glenelm School next year, please inform Ms. J. Sager and the school office.
