National Assisted Living Week ~ September 10 - 16, 2017

As I’m writing this Hurricane Harvey is pounding down

on Houston Texas and almost 50 inches of rain has

fallen.

The United States record for total rainfall of 52.00 inches,

was recorded on Kauai, during Hawaiian Hurricane Hiki in 1950. Our

thoughts and prayers are with those suffering in Texas, as we can

empathize from our own Hurricane experiences.

September 11, the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist bombing of the

World Trade Center, is also the anniversary of Hurricane INIKI that

devastated the island of Kauai in 1992.

The first Monday in September is the Labor Day Holiday. That is a good

time to celebrate the Immigrant laborers that first came to Hawaii to

work in the Sugar Cane and Pineapple fields, and their legacy to the

amazing blend of cultures and community that is our home.

The Chinese workers that came from Han China to Hawaii as early as

1789. Then the first 153 Japanese immigrants arrived in 1868. Almost

13,000 Portuguese had come by 1899 and by 1901 over 5,000 Puerto

Ricans had made new homes on the four islands.

The first Filipinos immigrated to America as early as 1765 (11 years

BEFORE the declaration of independence) and the first group of

Filipinos arrived in Hawaii in 1906, when The Hawaiian Sugar Planters'

Association (HSPA) opened offices in Manila and Vigan, Ilocos Sur, to

recruit Filipino workers, and provide them free passage to Hawaii.

Similar to those other immigrant

workers, I was wooed to Hawaii by the

prospect of a job, and free passage

when I came to work at a hotel on the

island of Kauai after Hurricane INIKI.

I’ll never forget driving down the

spectacular row of barren trees on the

way into Poipu and wondering what

had I gotten myself into? Just as those trees that have recovered from the

storm, I am still amazed at the beauty and resilience of my adopted island

Ohana. Continued on page 2

Labor Day - a holiday honoring working men and women

The United States, Puerto Rico and Canada all observe the first Monday of September as

Labor Day.

The Labor Day holiday as we know it grew out of the efforts of labor unions over a

century ago. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, records indicate the holiday was first proposed in

the late 19th century. Matthew M. Maguire and Peter J. McGuire are credited as the founders of this

holiday observance, as they were the first to suggest there be a day of observance honoring working people

here in the United States. Peter J. McGuire, a New York City carpenter, helped found the United

Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners.

The first observance of this holiday in the United States came in September of 1882 when a Labor Day

Parade was held by the Knights of Labor in New York City. In 1887, Oregon became the first state to

make Labor Day a legal holiday. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day a

national holiday.

Many people observe this day with cookouts, weekend trips, fun events or just plain relaxation. Some labor

organizations and businesses hold gatherings for their members and workers to celebrate the day together.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s® ~ September 23, 2017

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and

funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Currently Maui County has more

than 2,500 individuals affected with Alzheimer’s disease and an estimated 31,000

throughout the state. Every year the Roselani Place staff participates to support and

taking steps to end Alzheimer’s disease. Once again we humbly ask for your kokua

to contribute to the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's® on Saturday, September 23, from

7:00-10:00am. All monies raised will stay on Maui to provide services and programs for the people of Maui

County. We look forward to any donations you can contribute to help raise awareness and funds for

Alzheimer care, support, and research. Contact Debbie Priest, at 871-7720 to donate.

Continued from page 1 Rosh Hasanah, the Jewish New Year, begins at sunset on September 20th, and

followed 10 days later on September 29th by Yom Kipper, the Jewish Day of Atonement, when all sins are

forgiven; which is a good idea no matter what your faith is.

So, this year, on September 11, my wish for all of us is to be able to put the damage of past

storms behind us, and sailing forward, for clear skies- in all ways.

With Aloha, Steve Hansen, General Manager

This Day In History…

Here’s how to play…

The objective of the game is to fill all the blank

squares in a game with the correct numbers.

There are three very simple constraints to

follow. In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game:

Every row of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order

Every column of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order

Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include all digits 1 through 9

See the front desk for the solution.

National Assisted Living Week ®

Established by NCAL in 1995, National Assisted Living Week® provides a unique opportunity for residents,

families, staff, volunteers, and the surrounding community to come together to share with our residents a variety

of events and activities that show them how much we care for them. “Family is Forever” as this year’s theme

for National Assisted Living Week. The theme is inspired by a quote from the poet Maya Angelou: “Family isn’t

always blood, it’s the people in your life who want you in theirs: the ones who accept you for who you are, the

ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what.”Assisted living communities

across the country are encouraged to organize activities and events during NALW that celebrate these deep

connections between staff and residents.

In the announcement of the theme, NCAL Executive Director Scott Tittle said,

“Anyone who has spent valuable time in an assisted living community has seen how

staff can come to think of their residents like family. It takes a special person to work

in our profession, and often, caregivers form bonds that can never be broken. This

National Assisted Living Week, we want to recognize these amazing individuals who

give their heart and soul to their residents, as well as those seniors and individuals with

disabilities who leave a lasting imprint on their caregivers.”
