Thank you to our teachers and parents who helped make this evening special. Our third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade students just finished taking the field test of the new California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, also referred to as the Smarter Balance assessments. This state-wide assessment will be replacing the STAR/California Standards Tests that we took in past years. This year the state is testing the test questions and the new electronic format. The tests will not count and no scores will be reported to parents or the school. In order to find out which electronic platform will work best, our students took portions of the field test on desktop computers, laptops and iPads. Students shared their preferred testing platform on a survey taken after the testing. We will use their feedback when we plan our state testing next year. Congratulations to our wonderful parents and staff who were honored at our annual Honorary Service Awards. Parents Lori Baur, Carin Ezal, MarLa Gamberdella, Dawn Mock, and Mindy Sofro won awards along with staff members Joana Pattison, Hugh Ranson and Shannon Wagner. The award ceremony itself was very fun with friends and co-workers presenting skits, songs and moving tributes to the honorees. We greatly appreciate everything you have given to make our school so special. Many parents have asked about student placements for the 2014-2015 school year. While we do not take requests for specific teachers, you may write me a letter describing your child’s learning style. Speaking of boots . . . get ready to hoe-down at the Boots and Bandana Bash being held at the Frog Bar and Grill (Glen Annie Golf Course) on Saturday, May 3rd, from 5:00 –10:00pm. You are going to be in for a good ‘ol time with games, black jack, raffles, BBQ, DJ and even a line dancing teacher. Dust off those boots, throw on a hat, and mosey on over to experience the fun that our Mountain View School community can have outside of school. Melissa Renda, Chrystal Sturm, and Sharon Rossol have been diligently working to make this a night you will not forget!

Along with the Boots and Bandana Bash, our silent auction is happening right now! Check out the goods – there is something for everyone!! It is so easy to bid — just go to http://www.32auctions.com/cougars — look at all of the amazing things listed and bid away. Some of the items available on the online auction: restaurants, hotel stays, beauty, vino and much, much more. If you win, it’s a win for you and a win for Mountain View! Thank you Melissa, Chrystal and Sharon.

We had our annual Camino Real Marketplace Family Night on April 8th . The Mountain View Band played, Tom Tourville the Magician, kept us on our toes, and many families enjoyed a meal together at Kahuna Grill, Baja Fresh, Gina’s Pizza and Blenders. These establishments generously donated 25% of the earnings to our PTA. Thanks you, Jane Gray, for organizing this fun night!

The spring Farmer’s Market is always tasty with fresh, new produce. Cheers to Mona Lehman, Jessani Johnson, and Jeannette Todd, who yet again, set up this delicious stand on April 3rd. There is only one more chance to buy our farm-to-school produce which is coming up on May 8th. Please come and check it out!

On Thursday, April 10, Anita LaBau and Debbie Cox Bultan put together another school-wide book swap. Thank you to everyone who brought in their gently used books. It is exciting to pick new reads for gratis and encourage healthy reading habits. Our last book swap will take place on May 15, so mark your calendars. We appreciate you, Anita and Debbie!

We hope everyone heard about what fun the annual Honorary Service Award Luncheon was this year. Great presentations and awards went to award winning parents and teachers. Thanks to Paula Cassin and her team — the event was beautiful and oh so funny once again!

On Thursday, April 24th, Mountain View had their annual Open House/Art Show/Ice Cream Social. It was a great community event where students show their parents what they have done in class. They also had a chance to visit their future classrooms. GATE projects and art masterpieces were set out for viewing in the MPR while everyone enjoyed delicious ice cream sundaes.

Notes from the PTA Presidents Corner

Thank you Wendy Halleck, Chris Wong, and their helpers for carefully selecting an art masterpiece from every student and creating our school museum in the Multipurpose Room. We also appreciate Samantha Kuskey and Lori Baur for organizing the yummy ice cream social.

Mark your calendars for another Bike/Walk-To-School day coming up on May 7th! Get some physical activity in before school and make sure to enter campus at the main field for a little treat! Join in on this fun morning that Patrice Zubas is generously organizing.

Everyone should have received an invitation to Sue's retirement luncheon. This is not a PTA function, but a way to help celebrate and show our appreciation of Sue's 20 years of dedicated service to the Mountain View School Community. It should be a very special lunch for her and I hope everyone can join. Please RSVP to help plan for this special luncheon. It will be taking place on Friday, May 9th at 11:45am. Thank you Lori Baur for generously planning this special day.

On Wednesday evening, May 14th at 6:00pm, check out our Science Fair. Great thanks go out to our Science Specialist, Ellen Clark, and her helpers, for all their efforts to coordinate this event. If you can’t come to the evening event, check out the exhibits all day long in the MPR. It is rewarding to see so many students inspired to present a Science project.

Another highlight event coming up is our school Carnival! On Friday, May 16, Mountain View will transform into an amazing, fun fair. Bring family and friends to enjoy the down-home fun, including a multitude of carnival booths, a bike blender, a cake walk, food and entertainment. We appreciate all the hard work being done by Nancy Schley, Denise Sommer, and Beth Travis.

From Monday, May 27, through Wednesday, May 29, the Library will again host the Scholastic Book Fair. Look for some summer reads during this BOGO event. (We all know Buy One, Get One Free lingo now, right?) Thank you Mona Lehman and Jeannette Todd for organizing this event.

That about wraps it up. Check out the school calendar so that you can keep these events and more updated over the next few weeks. You don’t want to miss out!

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases

If summer finds you hiking in our local foothills or vacationing in more exotic

places, ticks can be an unwelcome attachment to your clothing or body.

Ticks (like spiders) are arthropods, not insects. They are the number one vector (carrier) of diseases in the United States and second only to mosquitoes worldwide. It is not the bite itself that transmits disease but the toxins, secretions or organisms in tick saliva passed during the blood feeding that cause disease.

In the United States, tick season typically extends from April through September. Mild winters and early spring can increase the number of ticks in the environment with a corresponding rise in tick bites and disease manifestation.

You can help prevent tick contact and bites by:

Walking in the center of trails.

Avoiding wooded or bushy areas, high grass and leaf piles.

Using a 20% DEET containing repellant on skin.

Using a product containing permethrin on clothing, hiking/camping gear.

Bathing or showering as soon as possible to wash off ticks that are crawling on your body.

Conducting a full body tick check upon returning from an infested area. Pay close attention to hair/scalp, in and around the ears, around the waist and inside the belly button, behind the knees and between the legs.

Examining pets and hiking/camping gear for ticks.

Placing clothing, sleeping bags and blankets in the dryer on high heat for 1 hour will kill ticks.

The DO’s and DON’Ts of tick removal:

DO use a fine tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to the skin and then pull upwards with firm, steady pressure.

DO clean the area with alcohol, antiseptic or soap and water after the tick has been removed.

DO NOT cover the tick with nail polish or petroleum jelly (Vaseline).

DO NOT apply heat (such as a match) to the body of the tick.

DO NOT twist or jerk the tick. This can cause parts of the mouth to break off and remain imbedded in the skin. IF parts of the mouth do break off, try to remove them using a fine tipped tweezers. If they cannot be removed easily, just let them stay in the skin.

Symptoms of tick-borne disease can include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain and rashes. Lyme Disease with its characteristic “bull’s eye” rash is probably the most publicized tick-borne disease. Other tick-borne diseases include: Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness (STARI), ehrlichiosis and tularemia. Tick paralysis is a rare disorder probably caused by a toxin in tick saliva. It causes acute, ascending, flaccid paralysis often confused with Guillain-Barre syndrome or botulism. Symptoms usually subside within 24 hours of removing the tick from the body.

Student Placement 2014—2015

Our primary goal in the student placement process is to create a balanced classroom environment that takes into account the learning needs of all students. Your child’s teacher is very familiar with your child’s academic and social needs. The teachers will work with me and other school staff to place your child in the best learning environment. If you feel it would be helpful, you may write a letter to me describing your child’s learning style or special needs. Please do not request specific teachers; letters are due by Friday, May 9.

There are many criteria that the teachers and I consider as we configure classes. These include:

Balance of boys and girls

Academic skill levels

Special needs of students

Group cohesiveness of the new class

Number of independent workers

Whether a child has been in a combination grade class the previous year

The staff and I take the student placement process very seriously. It is a complex task. Our goal is to provide a productive and rewarding year for your child.

Farmer’s Market

REMINDER!! Mountain View Community

If your trees (or neighbors’ trees) are laden with citrus — grapefruits, tangerines, lemons and limes, please

keep to us in mind, as we would LOVE your donations!!! We encourage you to share some of your bounty with our families. It is a tremendous benefit to our school community. We even have a team of students who will come and pick your goodies, all the while earning community service hours. Just send an email to Mona Lehman at [email protected] and we'll do all the work!

Thank you to all the families who donated lemons! Thank you to Given Farms for the gorgeous produce! And a big THANK YOU to our loyal customers!!

We are in the courtyard on the 1st Thursday of each month. Our LAST farmer’s market of the school year will be on:

Thursday, May 8 1:20- 2:30 PM

This month, leeks and kohlrabi were the highlight of our produce. Leeks can be used to replace onions in most dishes, and can also be the highlight, such as in frizzled leeks or potato and leek soup (see recipe in the November 2013 Viewpoints on the school website). But kohlrabi?? What is to be done with that bulb? These roundish-shaped vegetables come in green or purple, can be eaten raw or cooked, and taste a lot like broccoli stems. The word kohlrabi is German for cabbage turnip (kohl as in cole-slaw and rübe for turnip) even though kohlrabi is more related to cabbage and cauliflower than to root vegetables. They can be eaten raw; just peel, slice and add to a salad. They are also delicious cooked and are often used in Indian cuisine. Please see the website below for more great information about this curious vegetable!

Head to a Farmer’s Market and try a new vegetable or fruit! Share your recipe with us!

KOHLRABI SIAM CHOPPED SALAD

Makes about 4-6 servings

Ingredients: 4 medium kohlrabis, peeled and cut into 1/4‐inch dice

1 1/2 cups (360 ml) chopped Napa cabbage

1/4 pound (115g) snow peas, chopped

1/2 to 1 fresh pasilla (poblano) pepper, diced or 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

1/2 red bell pepper, cut into fine julienne about 1 inch long

3 green onions, chopped

3 tablespoons organic canola oil

2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

1 or 2 cloves garlic, finely minced

1/2 inch piece ginger, peeled and grated

Juice of 1/2 lemon (about 1 tablespoon)

2 teaspoons sesame oil

Dash of rice vinegar

Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Black sesame seeds

2 tablespoons minced green onions

Directions: 1. Combine all the ingredients, except the black sesame

seeds and green onions, in a large bowl and toss well to distribute the seasonings evenly.

2. Transfer to an attractive serving bowl or platter and garnish the top with the black sesame seeds and minced green onions.

3. This salad is best if made several hours ahead to allow the dressing to penetrate the vegetables.

4. Serve as a salad course or a side dish.

given in the Farmer’s Market article.

The MAGIC Annual Appeal must continue. We are close, but still not at our goal — we need all families to participate!

If you have forgotten to make a donation to the Specialists Program, please drop your donation into the box in the school office or go online at www.mtnview.goleta.k12.ca.us, click on the “SUPPORT” heading and then select “ONLINE DONATION.” You can make a one-time gift or set up a monthly amount through PayPal by clicking on “Donate” and marking the “Make This Recurring” box. Consider using online billpay to make an automatic monthly payment in a convenient amount. MAGIC can also accept postdated checks.

The cost of the enrichment program is $275 per student. This is similar to the cost of just one week of summer camp; however, your student receives instruction in art, music, science, P.E., library and computer science all school year. If this amount is not realistic, please give whatever level of support you can. Any donation amount help and indicates your support of our program.

Mountain View’s enrichment program is unparalleled in this community. Let’s ensure that it stays that way.

Thank you also to our generous Business Sponsors — please remember to say that you appreciate their support

when you visit these local businesses!

Support MAGIC. Support our children. Thank you from the MAGIC Committee!

If you have any questions now, or throughout the year, please visit the school website or email us!
