Judging Chairman Notes for August 2019 — Dave Houlihan

August Midway USA Chapter meeting will conclude with a three point judging event. Currently planned is Flight judging Steve Bowe’s 1967 Big Block coupe and Mike Rowley’s 1971 Concours car. Also planned is a judging school. Brief notes on our recently concluded Greenville, SC National. Very nice facility, about 170 cars (20 were C4s - has to be a record). Ops judges had an “Oh - Early - 30” breakfast (0530) with a “Beat the heat” start of 7am! Brad Hillhouse was a busy guy. Brad’s 1981 got Top Flight, he was awarded his Master Judges hat, and he judged 68-69 Interior on Wednesday. Another busy guy - Steve Williamson judged 1967 Bowtie Interior on Tuesday, followed by Flight Judging on both Wednesday and Thursday. (Lots of 1967s as usual.) Mary Gulley judged 78-82 Bowtie Interior on Tuesday, and 78-82 Flight Interior on Thursday. John Hecker judged 97-02 Interior on Thursday. Dave Ewan judged 56-57 Exterior on Thursday. Dave Gulley judged 78-82 Bowtie Exterior on Tuesday and 78-82 Flight Mechanical on Thursday. Dave Houlihan judged 84-96 Crossed Flags Mechanical on Tuesday and 84-96 Flight Mechanical on Thursday. Jo Houlihan worked as Tabulator on Thursday. Observer judges were Casey Coats, Gary Neimanis, and Craig Stephan. Nice presentation on NCRS 2020 National at French Lick, Indiana. Stopped at NCM in Bowling Green on our return trip - No C8! GM has said C8 will be at Carlisle (22 August). Following are pictures from National’s in Greenville, SC. Dave

Bloomington Gold 2019 — Brad Hillhouse

Bloomington Gold 2019 was a great time as I took my 1981 Corvette to participate in Gold Certification this year at the Indianapolis 500 track on June 20-22, 2019. I have owned this 1981 Corvette for 19 years, but never really had the time to have it judged. Starting with the hospitality of the Midway USA Chapter in October 2018, I started my journey to work the car all the way through the NCRS system. Although Bloomington Gold is not an “official” part of NCRS, nearly every judge at Bloomington Gold is a Master Judge and many are National NCRS team leaders. Bloomington Gold being well known and respected, I wanted to add a Bloomington Gold Certification to its resume while I am working though NCRS on the way to Top Flight and possible Bowtie status.

It also has always been a dream of mine to actually drive a Corvette on the Indy 500 track. In previous years when I have had Corvettes there, they were inside the buildings as part of a Special Display and getting the car out was not possible. So this year, with my 1981 there, it was the chance of a lifetime not only to drive on the track at speed, but to also get some amazing photos of the car in front of iconic INDY 500 racing locations. I got there a day prior to the show starting so that I could have the chance to be able to stage some photos with the car in Gasoline Alley, in front of the Iconic Pagoda, and on Pit Lane with no one else around giving me great photos of my car.

Yes it rained. It always rains. I didn’t even get out of the driveway before it started raining in Nebraska. But, it wouldn’t be an adventure without a challenge. Mother Nature – Challenge Accepted! Last year I learned that there is a great pull through car wash about 3 blocks from the entrance to the Indy 500 track. It is easy to get into with a truck and trailer and I washed the car right on the trailer. It is called “The Dirt Stripper” on Crawfords-ville Road and it is super clean, nice and shady and I was able to take several hours detailing the Corvette before driving into the track.

I learned last year that renting a garage stall in the Indy Pit Garage was an excellent idea as there is a good chance that it is going to rain. Usually A LOT! It’s well worth the $200 to have a dry place to put the car over-night, if the storms come. You also get a special early entry pass to come in before the gates open to the pub-lic, you get to pack inside with other Corvette owners & make friends. AND, you are parking inside the INDY PIT GARAGES!!! How cool is that? I was in Garage Bay “C” #12. In my mind, this is the exact garage that Mario An-dretti, AJ Foyt, Bobby Unser and Emerson Fittipaldi parked in!

Bloomington Gold 2019 — Brad Hillhouse (continued)

I didn’t actually buy gas for the Corvette from the track, but it makes for a great photo opportunity! I have several running jokes for the people that fol-low me on Facebook and filling up a Corvette on the back of a trailer is one of them. If you want to get in on the fun, Brad Hillhouse on Facebook for Corvette fun, NCRS stuff and Dad jokes.

Seriously, who hasn’t dreamed of having their Corvette in the Winner’s Circle at the Indy 500? For me, that is one more thing checked off the old bucket list. I know they don’t race Corvettes here, I know a 1981 Corvette “probably” couldn’t beat a 1981 Indy car, but come on, you can’t tell me you aren’t a little bit jealous right now? I’ve been watching the INDY 500 for close to 50 years now and this picture gives me goosebumps!

YES, I sat in the car and made “vroom vroom” noises while I put my left hand out of the window in a victory cheer while I imagined crossing the white finish line and the “Yard of Bricks” barely edging out a Mustang. The crowd went wild and I could taste that milk pouring down my face! The track is padlocked off, so this is inside the pit lane, but the same finish line and yard of bricks extends from the flag stand, across the track, through the pits, through the walkway of the Pagoda and out into the judging area of the infield concession area.

Friday morning was Gold Certification judging and these judges got their red pens out and ready to deduct! NCRS uses pencils that have erasers, Bloomington Gold uses Red Pens that don’t erase so I had to be on my game right from the start! But honestly, it’s the same great judges I have met at regional and national NCRS judging events, so although the pen is a different color and the judging sheet was shorter, it was pretty much all the same.

Saturday morning is when Survivor and Benchmark judging is done. The white shirts are changed for red ones. Very few of the Corvettes from Friday’s Gold Certification were brought out for these two additional levels of scrutiny and judging. They were mostly C3-4’s although there were several C1-2’s that were judged. Some of the same judges from Friday, but several new ones that gave the car an even higher level of scrutiny. Similar to Bowtie or Duntov Judging, the judges are inspecting from engine pad to exhaust system and everything in between.

One of the Survivor requirements is to complete a road trip with the Corvette and have it survive with no overheating or mechanical break downs. Now that Bloomington Gold is at Indy, doing 2 laps of the track is the perfect opportunity to do so! I was the last car on the track and could go at my own pace. On several of the straightaways, I got up to 90 mph, burying that 85 DOT mandated speedometer that came out in 1981! Driving on the Indy 500 track – another bucket list item checked off!

Saturday afternoon with rain threatening, each Corvette is staged to cross the start finish line in the infield behind the Pagoda and you hear your name, your Corvette and the award you received. I got to the line, Brian Pierce, 1978-82 team leader on one side of the car, Guy Larson President of Bloomington Gold on the other, I heard the announcement: Brad Hillhouse, Lincoln, Nebraska with a 1981 Corvette gets a Bloomington Gold Certification, a Survivor Silver and a Benchmark Award!

All in all, even with a bit of rain, it was a spectacular trip and corvette weekend. Bloomington Gold does some things better than NCRS, others not as much. Either way, it is an amazing venue for a Corvette show. I got to drive on the Indy 500 track, I met lots of NCRS and non NCRS Cor-vette friends, found lots of goodies in the swap meet area, enjoyed the Special Collections of Corvette and Camaro race cars, and much more. If you haven’t done it before, I encourage you to put Bloomington Gold 2020 on your list of “must do” Corvette events!

Probably 75% of these Corvettes were owned and driven by NCRS members that I have met over the past few years at chapter, regional and national conventions. I was going to take my 1968 to be included in the Special Collection, but since I am campaigning the 1981 this year, and the 68 has already been in it two times, I decided to bring the 1981 instead. I took lots of pics of friends staging, coming on and driving on the track and sent them to each person so they would have some great action photos of their Corvette at the track.

Meeting Minutes - Midway USA Chapter of NCRS, Inc. Minutes Prepared By Jim Coote, Secretary

Midway USA Tune Up Page 15

The July 2019 monthly meeting was held on the 13th, and called to order at 9:01 A.M. by our chapter Chairman, Rick Smiley. Fifteen were in attendance, including a visitor.

Old Business:

While welcoming the attendees this morning, Rick recognized a visitor and immediately started to interrogate him. “Him” introduced himself as Marvin Soliah, a member in good standing of Air Capital Corvette Club and a friend of Joe Elliott’s. That statement, “a friend of Joe Elliott’s”, started a review of Joe’s funeral this past Thursday which several of our club’s members attended and had very favorable comments on the memorial of Joe’s life. Marvin attended our June “All Corvette Show” and was im-pressed with the club’s mission and so decided to visit us to see what we are all about. I’m concerned that he picked the wrong month to monitor us, but at least he probably saw that we don’t take ourselves too seriously! By the way, Marvin enjoys his Sterling Blue 2017 Vette. He also appears to be the kind of Corvette enthusiast that our club and the National Organization is trying to recruit.

Rick asked for a treasurer’s report, so our Treasurer, Dallas Keller, spoke up and said that our check book showed that we had $2,458.58 in the account and of course our $100.00 in savings. Dallas also updated us on how the car show in June did. We had 57 registered cars, of which 12 were club members. With $144.00 in donations, plus food sales and the silent auction proceeds, we raised $1,100.00 for our charity, the American Cancer Society. The National Organization will match half of that amount later this year.

Rick asked the Secretary if he had anything to say and got the response that he expected, which was a sincere “NO”. Apparently not giving up there, Rick pursued his question by baiting the secretary when he asked him how his move was going! That apparently jabbed the secretary so he gave a “brief” description of downsizing his residence 1,000 square feet of space and one car garage. The problem seemed to be the couple that was involved in the move had only downsized their possessions by 100 square feet. After the “brief” synopsis, Rick seemed to be shocked at the comments as his response was, “for someone who didn’t have anything to say, he sure did say a lot”. Rick best not ask the Secretary for his comments from now on!

And guess what? Rick’s next topic on his agenda was to tell us about his efforts to make up for his past transgressions by heading up designing and building an office for a new Priest at his Church. From the sounds of things, Rick is going to have to continue his efforts of “doing good works” to make up for some of his feelings he’s developed on working with the other volunteers! I’m guessing that he’s needing our prayers. Me, I just need help unpacking boxes!

New Business:

For the next two months, Rick advises our meetings will include the judging of four member’s cars. In August, Mike Rowley will bring his 1971 for Concourse Judging and Steve Bowe will bring his 1967 Coupe. For September, Rick is planning on having Nelson Tucker’s 1963 roadster here for Flight Judging and possibly the Secretary’s ’63, a Concourse candidate. The upholstery is not done yet and the owner doesn’t seem to be in a hurry as his 3-car garage only has room for one car at the moment. He’s married, so you know which car has precedent!

What many of us have been waiting for is going to take place this coming Thursday, July 18th. The soon to be released C8 will be revealed with live-streaming from California and Davis-Moore will have a full program in their showroom including prizes and refreshments. It should be a fun filled evening, especially if you are considering ordering one.

Meeting Minutes - Midway USA Chapter of NCRS, Inc. Minutes Prepared By Jim Coote, Secretary

Midway USA Tune Up Page 16

The winner of the drawing at our June car show for a free membership to both NCRA and the Midway Chapter, Pat Woodward, may have his ’62 Red roadster for sale. At least someone who spends his time on Craig’s list looking for Corvette news spotted one that fits Pat’s car to a “V”. (not a “T”) If so, will Pat still need his newly acquired memberships?

Our Judging Co-Chairman informed us that the Edmond, Oklahoma Chapter will have a Judging Event August 17th. If interested, register online. That is the weekend after our August Judging Event so those who are still chasing points should appreciate the opportunity.

Phil Lorenz brought up the idea of purchasing a brick at the museum for Joe Elliott. Apparently the idea has been mentioned at one or both of the other Corvette Clubs too so it was suggested that maybe the three clubs should go together to purchase a brick. We should learn more next month.

Kerri Keller, Editor of our newsletter, again made a plea for the need for articles for the “Midway USA Tune Up”. This is a cry we have heard from time to time, beginning with time. Kurt Geis, our late former President for several years, made the plea after straining for things to write about in our news letter and Rick has taken up the banner and now Kerri. Can’t someone help?

Kerri also had another topic that she wanted to address…. the location of future Attitude Adjustment Hour meeting place. Since the start, we have been going to Side Pockets, but Kerri said that last month’s meeting was so loud that they couldn’t hear Rick! Maybe Rick wasn’t there as the resurrecting of the Priest’s office wasn’t going too well! Well at any rate, Kerri had a lot of support from those who were there so the agreement was to try the Oasis next month. The Oasis is located on Maple just west of West Street, behind Star Lumber.

Good golly, Kerri had another topic on her mind! She raised the issue that some other clubs charge $10 for judges at their events in order to raise money for the treasury. Items like ribbons, pizza lunches and other costs are not being met by our Judging Events, shrinking the till. A rather large contingent for this group spoke up giving their thoughts on the idea. Someone who will remain anonymous said that they could not pay him/her enough to judge, let alone charge him for the same feat! It was decided to put off the discus-sion till we had a larger representation of the club’s members. However, it was decided that there would not be any changes until after the next two Judging Events.

I’m not sure if that was all the Chairman had on his agenda notes, but the meeting was terminated shortly after the last discussion. And it was barely 10 o’clock!

Joe was a member of all three Wichita based Corvette Clubs: National Corvette Restorer’s Society, Air Capital Corvette Club, and South Winds Corvette Club. Joe loved his Corvettes. They were always just the base model, and Joe drove them, and drove them. To honor Joe, the three clubs drove Corvettes to his funeral as shown in the following photos. This was sure to make Joe smile. Joe, may you rest in Peace.

Midway USA Chapter of NCRS in Wichita, KS promotes the enjoyment, preservation and restoration of Chevrolet Corvettes.

We meet the 2nd Saturday of each month, 9:00 a.m. at Davis-Moore Chevrolet 8200 West Kellogg.

The National Corvette Restorers Society is a non-profit hobby group of thousands of families dedicated

to the restoration, preservation, history and enjoyment of Corvettes. Membership in the National

Organization is required in order to join local chapters. Below is the website for the National Organization.

The NCRS has organized Local Chapters around the world. Local Chapters provide the opportunity to

meet NCRS Members in your region who share your love of Corvettes and the restoration and enjoyment

of these fantastic cars. Chapters hold local events such as Judging Meets, Judging Schools, Road Tours

and occasional social events.

If you wish to get the total NCRS experience you need to belong to one or more Local Chapters. The

NCRS membership is made up of people who join for the cars and continue for the wonderful friends they

have made. The easiest way to be part of that experience is through membership in Local Chapters.
