This year Pentecost falls on May 24th which is also Memorial Day weekend. The Worship Min-

istry is encouraging you to put on your best red dress, shirt, tie or other apparel to celebrate both

Thank you…. The CWF Day Group would like to thank you

for your continued support of our annual nut sale.

Because of your generosity, we have been able to contribute to

the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, sponsor a child to Camp

Agape, give to the Clean Water Project, Monica’s Israel trip, the

Loop Project for our church and the Blessing Box offering for the

N.C. Christian Churches as well as give Prayer Shawls to our

church members who are ill and provide doughnuts for church

fellowship time. Thank you for helping us reach these goals.

We still have a few packages of nuts & have reduced them to

half price. They freeze well. You will find them on the table in

the hall next to the library door.

UNCSA—at Germany— On Sunday May 3 at 1:30pm students from UNCSA

will give a Benefit Concert at First Christian Church to assist with the expenses

for their trip to Germany. Come hear the voices of these students and support

them in making their trip.

Youthful Information . . . . . From the desk of Chris Rinker. . . . . . . . .

Can it be May already? April was a fantastic month for our Youth! We kicked the month off right by helping out with the

church’s annual Easter Egg Hunt on Holy Saturday, which was a fantastic event! The Youth helped the Easter Bunny hide

plenty of eggs for the little ones and then provided face-painting afterward. Then, on April 12th, we took to the Community

Garden to help the adults get it ready for Spring. We tilled and planted until we could till and plant no more, and we can’t

wait to see the garden in full bloom! On April 19th, the Youth had a fun outing to Adventure Landing. It was a little rainy, but

that didn’t stop the kids from having fun in the arcade! In addition to these activities, the Youth have been hard at work during

our regular gatherings on Wednesday nights preparing for Youth Sunday, which will be on May 31st at 10am in Taylor Hall.

This will be a combined service so that everyone can come and experience what the Youth have to offer, so mark your calen-

dars! This year’s Youth Sunday theme is Jesus Through the Ages. The Youth are also looking forward to their annual Mission

Trip at Christmount Work Camp from July 13th through the 18th, where we will help make the camp a better and more afford-

able place for underprivileged children and specially-abled adults. If you would like any additional information on these ac-

“Faith Seeking Understanding”. . . .

Grace and Peace to you all,

I don’t know about you all but I am still recovering from the wonderful Lent and Easter we have experienced here at First

Christian! From our absolutely life-giving Wednesday night small groups to a meaning-filled Maundy Thursday observance,

as well as a full day of service on Good Friday, a fun-filled Easter egg hunt and animal blessing, and finally capping every-

thing off with 3 absolutely out of this world Resurrection Sunday Services, we have seen that God’s Spirit, once loosed,

cannot be contained.

Having experienced the joys of fellowship that comes from deep connection with God as well as with one another, many of

you have been asking if we will be continuing our Wednesday night activities after Easter. Well, I am pleased to say that

we will be.

Beginning on Wednesday evening, May 13, we will resume our Wednesday Night activites with the launch of “Wednesday

Night Live.” Our fellowship will include a meal and fellowship time beginning at 6pm. Following dinner, beginning at 7pm,

will be youth groups, choir rehearsal, and Wednesday Night Bible Study, led by yours truly. We will begin our Bible Study

by exploring Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. I think we will all be wonderfully blessed as we explore this letter to-

gether. As we see what Paul exhorts this community to be and do in Christ’s name, I think it will be very obvious how these

same exhortations are part of our charge in this day and age. I hope you all can join us and be a part of the fun!

The staff & students at Creative Palooza are charging full speed ahead to the end of the semester!

We are always in need of donations in the form of snacks for our children each afternoon. Your donations not only help us keep gro-

cery costs down, but also give us a chance to advertise to potential parents the involvement of our church family in our childcare program

here at First Christian Church.

Below is a list of snacks we feed the children on a regular basis.

Let's Honor our Palooza Staff

Our Palooza staff works hard to provide a safe, warm, and secure after-school and summer learning environment for the chil-

dren we serve, and a true ministry of childcare for them and their families. As the school year winds down, it would be a

lovely gesture to honor our staff with a small love gift to thank them for their selfless service to our church. If you would be

interested in making a donation - even $5 or $10 will make a huge difference - please give the amount of your choice to Sharry

Christian Outreach!

After reading the minutes of the last Pastor’s cabinet meeting and the article that the CWF put in this newsletter, I was re-

minded of how blessed I am to have been hired for the Administrative and bookkeeping position for First Christian Church

back in 1999. It is because of the loving and generous people that make up this church family that Drew & I made the deci-

sion to begin attending here several years ago. We have both been a part of many of the mission trips to New Orleans, Bir-

mingham and Indiana over the years. The kindredships we formed mean a lot to us.

I want to make note of the Christian Action Ministry events that take place, at the leadership of Paul Gillespie and his

daughter Lindsey Haddock, every day of the year here at First Christian Church and many other outreach programs provided

by other Ministries, CWF, CMF, Palooza, Christian Education and our Evangelism Ministry team.

Just this past month, on Good Friday, this church provided lunch and afternoon tea for Hospice, provided bags filled with

items of need for the elderly to Senior Services, worked on organizing and stocking our Back Pack Program for Easton Ele-

mentary children, hung blinds in the children’s wing and assembled playground equipment for Palooza, which is an after

school program this church provided to a community when it recognized a need. (The program, through the leadership of

Rev. Sue Halford and the Palooza Committee, offers a service to many families that struggle daily to provide for their chil-

dren).

Through an established endowment, the Louise Hunter Outreach Fund, First Christian Church has offered support to the

Christian Church in NC’s capital campaign, NALP (CPU medical launch in the Congo), the Children’s Center in Winston

-Salem, The Foundation - Melissa & Richard Jefferson missionaries, Winston-Salem Street School and many others each

year.

A list of organizations that this church provides monetary outreach to, on a yearly basis from our budget and the extra giv-

ing of its most generous congregates, is Samaritan Ministries, Rescue Mission, Forsyth Prison Ministry, Enrichment

Center, Shepherd Center, SCAN, Contact, CROP Walk, Meals on Wheels, Camp Agape, Angel Tree at Christmas and

the Prison Ministry children’s Christmas. As well, there is volunteer time given to many of these organizations by members

of First Christian Church. Then there are missions such as Project RE3—Kel Billing, missionary in Israel, Monica Banks,

Israel mission trip, Wycliff Association—Mark & Kathy Nuessmier, missionaries, World Relief, and Clean Water Project.

One Harvest, a program begun in 2011, offers to any family with a need and a desire the opportunity to purchase food at

considerably reduced prices and has serviced folks from King to Lexington.

There is a non-member Benevolent Fund that was established in 2000 by Mrs. John Glenn in memory of her husband.

Over the years her family has given thousands of dollars to support it, at the guidance of First Christian Church. Currently the

Opportunity Class gives weekly support to help maintain it. I, along with the Christian Action Ministry and the pastor, have

the privilege of overseeing this fund along with assistance from the office volunteers.

Additionally our Christian Education Ministry provides a wonderful Vacation Bible School, Easter Egg Hunt, Blessing

of the Animals as well as a fun filled exciting time at Halloween with our Trunk or Treat to any child in our community

who wants to participate.

This past year, with the leadership of our Pastor, Ryan Thrasher, we offered a Community Block Party with food and fun,

including games and a free movie night for all the community around us. There are plans to offer it again this year.

And just when you think we can’t give any more, there is the Disciples Mission Fund that 10% of your yearly pledge

supports. This, along with all the “Special Offerings” though out the year (Easter, Pentecost, Thanksgiving, Christmas,

Week of Compassion), is sent to the Church Finance Council for outreach all over the world. You can check out the special

For all your time, talents and gifts, I thank you. I have the pleasure of working with these ministries each day and want you

to know that from my point of view, First Christian Church, “they will know you are Christians by your love”!!
