• The effects of power application in refining and fiber mix settings are known when testing the paper off the reel.

• These test results and feedback from the PM operator are used to change refiner power settings and/or the fiber mix

in the stock prep system for keeping paper quality on target.

• However, stock prep operators operate the refiners more or less “blindly”, as they have no way of “seeing” what a

change in power or fiber mix will do to the overall fiber quality in the machine chest

• As a consequence, when market / production prices of the different fiber sources in the mix change, or pulp species

become temporarily unavailable, minimizing the cost of the fiber mix and keeping paper quality on target requires

costly, high effort paper machine runs (trial & error).

Pushing our development process further, we have merged our proprietary

refiner simulation tool Magnus© and fiber quality response curves to a new

powerful simulation tool – Fiber GPS™

Thereby we widened our focus from the refiner (plate lifetime and energy

consumption) to the wider system for specifically tailoring fiber quality

Now we can now bring “Light into the Darkness” and make the influence

of fiber mix, flow, plate design and power application visible.

Proprietary algorithms allow reliable fiber quality prediction over several

stages of refining as well as mixing of different refining lines –

a true breakthrough.

The ANDRITZ SOLUTION



To derive maximum benefit for our customers, we have developed a simple

and easy to understand user interface.

You can also look ahead and run What-If Scenarios.

How much money could one save by changing the fiber mix?

How would one then have to refine for achieving “in-spec” quality?

Another potential use of this tool is Vendor Qualification:

• After the quality of a certain supplier or source has been understood (refiner curves,

long term & short term variability…) its best use can be quickly and confidently
