Front haul requirements

For 4G, front haul really means carrying CPRI

• A set of 1G to 10G interfaces… not a problem: WDM-PON

Simple calculation of wireless front haul for 5G

• Typical backhaul capacity per sector for 4G ~100Mb/s

• 20 MHz of spectrum going to 200MHz: 1Gb/s

• 10x cell densification: 10Gb/s

• CPRI: 30 bits per sample vs. 4~5 bits of info: 64Gb/s

• 64x64 MIMO: 4Tb/s to serve the 100Mb/s area!

Providing this bandwidth digitally seems prohibitive

• Many are now considering analog systems
