3 Examples from Higher Education

KENTUCKY TECHNICAL & COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM

Flex choices for students

Modules (1,2 and 3 weeks long) available 365 days a year

Modules carry partial credit (.10,.25, .33 etc.) and learning is assessed via pre and post tests of competency and capability

Leaners accumulate their partial credit till it = 3 and then have credit for a full and transferable course

Adaptive assessments for and of learning, modular assessment designs and e-portfolios

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN FLEX DEGREE

No courses, no tutors, no attendance at sessions.

Instead, clear rubrics

Each credit required comes with a playlist of appropriate open education resources

Learners can “buy” mentoring and coaching services – not required.

When the learner is ready, an integrated and comprehensive assessment of knowledge, competencies and capabilities is completed for credit.

All enabled by learning technologies, adaptive assessment technologies and e-portfolios
