A t two o’clock in the morning kids should be at home in bed.

But you may be shocked to learn how many teenagers are

roaming the streets unsupervised at that hour.

Worse still, their parents have no idea where their kids are – many believing they’re either home or at a friend’s house.

I saw just how bad the problem is fi rst hand when I went out with St Marys police last weekend.

We saw kids, as young as 15, sitting in the park getting drunk, 16-year-old girls out by themselves, thugs with baseball bats and countless arrests.

Th ese young adults have no idea of the danger they’re putting themselves in and clearly the police message isn’t getting through.

So this week offi cers adopted some

new recruits – the Penrith Panthers footy team.

Four of their star players Tim Grant, Clint Newton, Lachlan Coote and Sam McKendry walked the streets with police to try and get through to wayward teenagers.

Police believe their uniform can be a barrier and teens in particular may pay more attention if their role models are doing the talking.

Th e kids responded really well to the players and the Panthers boys did a great job trying to help these kids.

You could see the teenagers were more relaxed chatting to the players and were also a little star struck.

Which hopefully means they listened and maybe, just maybe, next time they’ll think about what they’re doing.

Panthers boss Phil Gould says the

team will continue to do whatever they can to help these young fans, many of whom are squandering bright futures by hanging out in the wrong places with the wrong people.

He told me the Panthers hope to continue working with police… even welcoming these troubled teens to the players training sessions, so they can understand the importance of getting your life on track and staying there.

So hats off to the Panthers boys and the police.

Sometimes it’s these unconventional approaches that can really have an impact.

And even if it’s just one teenager that took notice and changes their behaviour it’s worth it.

Because the alternative is doing nothing and helping nobody.

For the past year Adams has been performing his full band arena rock show to sold out audiences in Europe and Canada in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release of his multi-platinum, award-winning album ‘Waking Up Th e Neighbours’.

Adams is a Companion of the Order of

Canada and has been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and has a ‘star’ on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Rappers will converge on Tempe’s Valve Bar tomorrow for a war of words in a head-to-head battle rap event known as Spit Vicious from

12pm.“It’s exploding worldwide, the battle

movement,” said Spit Vicious organiser and Australian Battle Rap League founder, Mike Pipes.

On the card for the afternoon is Mesar vs Embrace, two-on-two battle Bonza & Pipes vs ADM & Risby, Noodle Dense vs Prhymel MC, Prozacc vs McLuvin, Often vs Shane Rene, Mitus vs Ran MC, Sloth vs Jenocidal and Unfaded vs Fers.

“It’s going to be a combination of new kids and older guys.”

Pipes said on November 10, ‘the punks’ will have one of their gigs at the venue in the evening while the ‘hip hop boys’ will hold their battles during the day.

“It’s a great venue with a long history of live music,” he added.

Pipes, of Melbourne, who runs regular, larger-scale battle events in Victoria, fi rst brought his league to Sydney’s inner west in July this year.

Valve Bar’s Greg Nusinovitsch said his venue has hosted diff erent battle rap events since about 1998.

“It’s absolutely electric,” Mr Nusinovitsch said of the vibe at a battle. “It’s two lyricists competing with their wittiness and skills.”

Battles will be released online: www.youtube.com/user/DirtyMackademics.

Leaders of tomorrow are called to apply for the 2013 Youth Parliament program, with the closing date for nominations

extended from today until December 12.In 2012, the YMCA NSW Youth

Parliament brought together young people from across NSW for the annual forum to learn about advocacy, parliamentary and legal processes.

Marrickville MP Carmel Tebbutt said the program helps the next generation of parliamentarians to understand how politics works, and why and how we make diff erent laws.

“Understanding how the democratic process works will ensure that young people can play an eff ective role in the future,” Ms Tebbutt said.

Ms Tebbutt encouraged Marrickville residents aged 15-18 to apply for the program, which involves a three-day training camp in April and youth parliament activities. Th e highlight though is a week-long camp in the July school holidays during which participants will take over NSW Parliament House and debate issues they are passionate about.

“If you are passionate about making change in New South Wales, you will be the voice of young people in your electorate, advising New South Wales politicians and decision-makers on matters aff ecting young people,” Ms Tebbutt said.

In 2012, the Marrickville electorate Youth Parliament representative was Tina Zhou, and in 2011, Heather Dunn claimed the experience.

On August 16, Ms Tebbutt moved a parliamentary motion to commend Ms Zhou on her community advocacy through her work in the Youth Parliament

as shadow minister for justice, juvenile justice and police and as youth manager of opposition business this year.

Th e 2013 program will mark the twelfth Youth Parliament in NSW since its inception.

Marrickville’s boarding house residents will have occupancy rights for the fi rst time and all facilities will have to be registered under laws passed recently in the NSW

Legislative Council.NSW Minister for Disability Services Andrew

Constance described the Boarding Houses Bill 2012 as an historic reform aimed at protecting some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

“I welcome the passage of this important bill through the parliament which upholds the rights of boarding house residents, whether they are people with disability, people with mental illness, students, or those on low incomes,” Mr Constance said.

Th e NSW Boarding Houses Register will be in

place by January 2013. Operators will also face increased penalties for non-compliance, and there will be increased powers of entry for offi cials to do inspections.

“Th is Bill gets the balance right in terms of maintaining the viability of the boarding house industry, while ensuring safeguards are in place for residents so that people live in clean and well run accommodation,” Mr Constance said.

Marrickville MP Carmel Tebbutt said the NSW Opposition welcomes the legislation.

“Th e Government will now need to provide suffi cient resources to make this legislation eff ective, particularly so that boarding house compliance can be monitored.”

Street and laneway parties in the inner west are set to become easier to organise after Marrickville Council passed a

motion to streamline event applications and insurance.

Th e Street Parties Program motion, raised by Labor north ward Cr Jo Haylen at the November 6 meeting, was passed unanimously and will include a ‘tick-a-box’ insurance application system to make it simpler for neighbours to organise road closures for car-free community celebrations.

Cr Haylen said the motion was designed to help residents bypass existing ‘bureaucratic hurdles’ to hosting public parties on blocked off streets.

“It’s a small project, but it is I think emblematic of a broader culture in Marrickville,” Cr Haylen said.

“Th is is a nice way to make sure people get out and meet each other and will build better community, better alliances to work together… It also encourages street pride.”

She said she hoped increases in the numbers of community get-togethers would encourage more ‘over-the-fence’ style conversations between neighbours and forge stronger neighbourhoods.

“When neighbours talk to each other they fi nd out [things like] the old Greek man doesn’t have the strength to bring his rubbish bin in and out anymore, but he’s too proud to ask for help,” Cr Haylen said.

She said the program would also

prevent organisers using unsafe methods to clear roads of cars for parties, including lining up wheelie bins across entrances to block vehicle access to lanes and cul-de-sacs, through provision of party road blocks.

“Th e idea is that there is an online portal with a checklist. We should be making it as easy as possible.”

Asked what response she’d had from residents, Cr Haylen said she’d had “nothing but enthusiasm” for the idea.

Community members gathered with balloons in hand at Newtown on Monday to celebrate the opening of the newly-upgraded train station, which has been

accessible via a lift as of October 29.Addressing a small crowd from atop a bench,

Marrickville MP Carmel Tebbutt said the upgrades were a commitment made by the Labor party in 2005 and followed a long-running and passionate community campaign to improve the station’s accessibility.

Ms Tebbutt said in the absence of an offi cial opening celebration, the community had come together to stage its own celebration.

“We’re not sure we’re getting one, but we thought it was important,” Ms Tebbutt said.

“Th is was a community campaign to get the upgrade and I think it’s appropriate to that the community now celebrate the fruits of their eff orts.”

In attendance were Marrickville Council project offi cers for access and inclusion, Ann-Mason Furmage and Glenn Redmayne, who described the upgrades as a wonderful improvement.

Lisa Burns, who heads the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, one of the key organisations to push for a lift at Newtown, said the accessibility campaign was “really a community eff ort”.

She said petition copies were left at the NNC for guests to sign and that NNC staff also took petitions into local school communities to garner support.

“Th e whole community got behind this,” Ms Burns said.

“Our thanks must go to the whole community but particularly to Carmel and Penny Sharpe, who lodged the petitions.”

Stage one of Newtown was opened to the public on

Monday, October 29 and included a new concourse area, a covered walkway, the refurbishment of existing heritage buildings along the entry walkway for retail use, a new lift and stairs and upgraded toilet facilities including a family-accessible toilet.

A Transport for NSW spokeswoman said stage two of the upgrade will be fi nished in early 2013 and will include the refurbishment of the existing booking offi ces and the reconfi guration of existing stairs as emergency stairs.

“Th e approximate cost of the Newtown Station upgrade is around $35 million,” the spokeswoman said.

Marrickville woodfi re pizzeria NOM Pizza will host a Movember-themed event in the name of men’s health.

“We’re supporting Movember here at NOM Pizza, in conjunction with Napoli Foods. We’re excited to support a great cause and have a bit of fun with our special one-off pizza menu - it should make for a great day!” said manager, Craig Anderson.

“It’s the last Monday of Movember -November 26 from 3pm-9pm.”

Mr Anderson said fi ve members of staff will take part, downing their razors for the month to become mo’ bros.

“We’ve always done Movember independently and we believe we can do a lot more this year by teaming up with the shop.”

Mr Anderson said he’d taken part in Movember for about four years due to the importance of raising funds and awareness of prostate cancer and men’s depression.

MO’gheritas will take the place of the traditional Margherita and pizza al metro (one metre pizza) will be the star attraction of the special menu, with proceeds from the night going towards the cause. For more details, call 9043 3000 or visit www.facebook.com/NOMPizza

For almost fi ve years, train driver Elie Eid has pushed for support of people who suff er from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)

through Marrickville charity, Save Our Sons.

In 2008, the 36-year-old father-of-two founded the organisation after his son Emilio was diagnosed at age two.

On October 1 at 7am, Australian music personality Angry Anderson joined Mr Eid at the Sydney Markets annual charity

cherry auction to raise funds to fi ght the severe muscle wasting disease.

Mr Anderson is the latest Save Our Sons ambassador, alongside the likes of ‘the Marrickville Mauler’ Jeff Fenech and Anthony Mundine.

“It was great. I think they raised $30,000 from the fi rst cherry box. Angry is an absolute champion. We’ve been blessed with the support of these celebrities,” Mr Eid said.

DMD aff ects 1 in 3,500 mostly young boys. Th e goal of Save Our Sons is to fund the world’s fi rst human clinical trial for a viable treatment or cure.

W hen you’ve been making

wine in the Hunter Valley for 140 years or more and are simply

continuing to grow – expanding into such other regions as the Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills and Eden Valley to name just a few – you should be content in the knowledge that you are doing things right.

But McGuigan Wines’ Chief Winemaker, Neil McGuigan while no doubt content with what he can see behind him, is forever looking to the future, crafting better and better wines and creating new labels to refl ect new approaches to his ever-evolving skills, whilst ensuring only the best continues to go under existing labels.

A favourite of mine is his value-pricedBin 7000 Chardonnay, the 2011 vintage is a stand-out medium-bodied wine with a creamy taste and one that’s delightfully fresh and crisp. Its powerful aromas are all about tropical fruit and lovely citrus overtones and yet it’s priced at just $12.99.

Defi nitely not being in the ‘Not Another Chardonnay’ camp – I still consider the variety amongst my top three white favourites – I’d suggest enjoying this one now with a simple chicken casserole, quickly grilled white-fl eshed fi sh or creamy pasta dishes, or putting it aside for more rewarding drinking in three to fi ve years

time. One for lunch: If you are into pork stir-

fry, a nice wine to enjoy one with is a New Zealand Riesling from Giesen in the famed Marlborough region.

Their 2011 Estate Riesling that’s now available nationally is slightly more sweetish than most drier Rieslings, which is why it will go well with that pork stir-fry. The palate has fl avours of tangelo, and touches of honey. It’s also got a slightly lower than usual alcohol content at 10.5 per cent.

Pay $18.99 and go forth and enjoy.

Tinea pedis, otherwise known as athlete’s foot is a fungal infection aff ecting the skin. Most commonly occurring on the feet, this infection is

the result of fungal spores spreading in a favorable environment. Th e dark, warm and

Th e best course of action is the use of over the counter topical anti-fungal creams from your local pharmacy. Talk to the pharmacist about the best options for you. Th ere are many diff erent applications from sprays and powders through to

Fashion at the races

Nothing says “fashion” more than Spring Carnival season. It is a time when women wear their favourite dresses and

men can be seen looking their best. On Tuesday, we saw some of the best

and worst Spring Carnival fashions at the Melbourne Cup and what we saw will determine the frocks and suits that we wear for the remainder of the race season.

Th ere is no doubt that fashion is one of the most important parts of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, aside from the race itself, and the Carnival on Tuesday was no exception.

Th e fashions on the day were not only about the dresses but were about the entire outfi ts; from fascinators and hats to handbags, gloves and umbrellas, every person had harmonised their outfi t perfectly.

It was clear from the elaborate millinery, bright colours, sky-high heels and slim fi tting suits that this season is all about making a statement. Whether it is simple or glamorous, from head to toe, you should be aiming to make a statement with your outfi t. Making a statement doesn’t necessarily mean wearing something over the top, it is about wearing something diff erent that will get you noticed.

Making a statement is not always easy but there are a few things that you can experiment with to make your Carnival outfi t a standout.

Colour is an easy way to make a statement. You can experiment with colour blocking, bright prints, soft pastels, diff erent colour combinations and even wearing diff erent tones of the same colour. If wearing colours is not your thing, try wearing a black or white dress with diff erent coloured accessories.

Accessories are another way that you can make a big statement with an outfi t. Th e head wear that you choose on the day makes a big impact on the outfi t. Whether you choose a large headpiece or a small fascinator, choose something that complements the rest of your accessories as well as your dress. Choose shoes, gloves and other accessories that will complement the rest of your outfi t.

Q. Every month I suff er from severe period pain. It gets so bad I can’t go to work. I have to take high strength pain relief tablets for a couple of days just to get through it. Is there anything I can do naturally to help?

A. Yes, there is, but fi rst I would advise you to be checked for endometriosis or fi broids, as these conditions can be the cause of severe period pain.

Once they have been ruled out, there are a number of diet and lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your pain.

Eat less saturated fats (e.g. meat, full • fat dairy products).Eat more fi sh, nuts and seeds • (especially walnuts and linseeds). Th ese contain omega 3 fatty acids which are anti-infl ammatory and will help relieve pain.Eat more green leafy vegetables such • as rocket, spinach and cabbage as these enhance liver clearance of excess oestrogen.Eat more magnesium rich foods such • as nuts, seeds, dried fruit, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Magnesium works by relaxing the uterine muscle and so relieves painful cramps.Exercise regularly – increased • circulation to the pelvic region has been found to reduce period pain. Use a hot water bottle or have a hot • bath when pain is severe.

Have a massage just before or during • your period.

If these strategies don’t help, there are a number of herbal medicines and supplements that are very eff ective in eliminating period pain.

I have a friend redecorating a room for her soon to be born baby. Being fairly health conscious she asked instore at a carpet supplier how safe

a type of carpet was for a new born baby.

She was met with an incredulous look from the sales lady and told, like it was the only answer she needed: “It’s nylon, I have sold plenty of it and no one has ever complained!”

Th e sales lady was obviously very confi dent she knew enough about it to have a new born baby laying all over it and breathing in that fresh carpet smell all day long.

Except when asked what type of nylon, she didn’t know. Or was it a low VOC type (volatile organic compound)? She wasn’t sure of that either. Ditto for what was actually in the stain-guarding treatment she was upselling.

And it was pretty clear that she didn’t care for some obviously treehugging, mung bean eating hippie asking frivolous questions.

Problem is that even a cursory bit of research shows up results like increased rates of cancer in carpet layers, epileptic seizures, sinus problems and plenty of other conditions.

Th ere is a well known neuroscientist called Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, who cured her own son of autism.

She has a book on GAPS which stands for Gut And Psychology Syndrome, it explains all about how important the diet and immune system of the gut is.

To summarise, when the immune system of the gut is compromised, all the toxins and pollutants everyone is so exposed to get into the body – and she has many examples of it eff ecting the brain and health.

Th is isn’t some anti-carpet rant, there are massive levels of exposure we are all faced with now from all sorts of chemicals, hair care or hygiene products, insecticides, cleaning chemicals to perfumes, processed foods and more.

A perfect immune system will handle a couple of these toxic things but not many of us have perfect immunity and the list of new toxins, like the list of conditions we are now suff ering from, gets longer every year.

So when it came to believing a neuroscientist who has studied the area extensively and literally ‘wrote the book on it’, or believing the saleslady, obviously my friend bought the cheapest synthetic carpet she could and had a double spray of stainguard! Ok maybe not, but she easily could have. Take your family’s health seriously and always look for the healthiest option.

EF rom the writer

that brought you ‘In Bruges’,

‘Seven Psychopaths’ is a crazy, hilarious new gangster comedy starring Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson and Abbie Cornish.

Marty (Farrell) is a struggling writer who dreams of fi nishing his screenplay, ‘Seven Psychopaths’. Billy (Rockwell) is Marty’s best friend, an unemployed actor and part time dog thief,

who wants to help Marty by any means necessary. All he needs is a little focus and inspiration.

Hans (Walken) is Billy’s partner in crime – a religious man with a violent past. Charlie (Harrelson) is the psychopathic gangster whose beloved dog has just been stolen by Billy and Hans. Charlie is unpredictable, extremely violent and wouldn’t think twice about killing anyone or anything associated with the

theft. Marty will get all the focus and inspiration he needs for his screenplay, just as long as he lives to tell the tale.

‘ Halo’ has been one of Xbox’s biggest selling

game franchises over the past decade, and things are set to get even bigger with the release of the action-packed, ‘Halo 4’, this week.

‘Halo 4’ marks the beginning of a new saga in the blockbuster franchise that has shaped entertainment history and defi ned a generation of gamers.

The latest installment ushers in the return of mankind’s

greatest hero, the Master Chief, in a newly envisioned, epic sci-fi adventure.

Set nearly fi ve years after the events of ‘Halo 3’, ‘Halo 4’ follows the Master Chief and his faithful artifi cial intelligence (AI) companion Cortana as they venture into a mysterious new world and discover an overpowering ancient evil.

With humanity’s fate hanging in the balance, the Master Chief and Cortana are

thrust into a desperate mission against overwhelming odds to save mankind from the threat of extinction.

Reviews have been extraordinary.

T he year’s second (and far grittier) Snow

White reimagining, ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

In the epic action-adventure ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, Kristen Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman

threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth). Sam Clafl in joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power.

This fi lm is a visual masterpiece, with alternating dark and light images that both elicit fear and awestruck wonder. Stewart is not nearly as annoying as she was in the ‘Twilight’ fi lms, Aussie Hemsworth

is formidable as the Huntsman, but the most remarkable and powerful performance comes from Theron as the wicked queen.

B ehind modern legends Nirvana and

Pearl Jam, Seattle’s most successful and well-loved grunge band is Soundgarden, and the rockers are back this week with their fi rst studio album in over 15 years, ‘Animal Kingdom’.

Soundgarden reformed in early 2010, and since then have released both a greatest hits and a live album.

Recent airplay hit ‘Live to Rise’ – which

you might remember from the closing credits of box offi ce blockbuster ‘The Avengers’ – does not feature amongst the 13 fresh tracks on the album, but there’s no shortage of quality to be found.

The fi rst song on the album, the appropriately titled ‘Been Away Too Long’, is riff-heavy and a punchy return to the grunge stars we know and love.

Vocalist Chris Cornell is just as

gritty-sounding as fans will remember from 90’s albums ‘Down on the Upside’ and the popular ‘Superunknown’ as he muses on the nature of dreams, parenthood and music itself. it is released this week!

‘Australia’s Got Talent’ from its 2013 schedule. Less the 24 hours later, rivals Nine snapped it up and added it to its new line-up for next year. The axe didn’t come as much of a surprise with ratings from this season way down on previous years and featuring a judging panel that was looking tired and boring. The only way the franchise could’ve survived in the short-term was new host/judges or a change of networks, and it went with both. Nine recently revived ‘Big Brother’, and has done so reasonably well, so expect ‘AGT’ to have a completely fresh, updated and more entertaining vibe next year. [Pictured]

If you were worried you missed some of your favourite American shows last week, don’t be too alarmed because they

didn’t actually air. Super-Storm Sandy not only devastated millions across east coast America but it also stopped many top shows from airing in the US, largely due to the non-stop coverage many American networks gave to the storm. Therefore shows usually fast-tracked from the US into Australia, such as ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘2 Broke Girls’, weren’t seen. Programming did return to normal though this week.

Kerri-Anne Kennerley delivered some great news last week – she was free from cancer. KAK went through six and a half weeks of radiation for breast cancer, fi rst diagnosed back in June during her time on ‘Dancing with the Stars’. Now all is well and good we look forward to having KAK back on our screens very soon.

Good news for fans of reality show ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ because it’s

fi nally been renewed by Foxtel for another season. The show didn’t air this year after former host Sarah Murdoch quit the program following the 2011 season to pursue interests at Channel Ten. Whispers are that current ‘Project Runway Australia’ host Megan Gale will get the honours of hosting the revived modeling contest. I’m not the biggest fan of Gale’s hosting abilities, she’s quite bland and pedestrian. If the show wants to make a big splash in 2013 it needs to go above and beyond and not use existing Foxtel talent.

Michael Palin is one of the world’s best travel presenters and now he’s off to South America for his next exhilarating adventure. ‘Michael Palin’s Brazil’ is a four-part series which will air on ABC1 from this Sunday, November 11. From the lost world of Amazonia to the buzzing modern metropolis of Rio de Janeiro, Palin

explores this vast and disparate nation in his inimitable way. It’s a timely look at this rising global power, host nation for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics. It all begins at 7.30pm.

Those funny boys, Hamish and Andy, are back for another installment of their popular ‘Caravan of Courage’ series. This time the boys will be hosting two 90-minute specials – one from Australia and one from New Zealand. The crazy pair will rev up the old caravan and courageously drive the length of New Zealand and the breadth of Australia to compare and contrast the people and places that make our region so unique. And then, in a very unscientifi c manner, they will pick a winner. ‘Hamish and Andy’s Caravan of Courage: Aus vs NZ’ airs Sunday, November 11 and Sunday, November 18 at 6.30pm on Channel Nine.

The Newtown Jets will kick off training on Monday after a short break since claiming the grand fi nal on September 30.

On November 21, the Jets will also host a victory dinner and presentation night at the Petersham RSL Club from 7pm, with fans invited to celebrate with players and other supporters.

Asked about the club’s immediate plans for the future, Club spokesman Glen Dwyer said one key aim was to get a lot more local people to games and to acquire more members and sponsors to support the team in 2013.

Mr Dwyer, who has been following the club since the early 1960’s, said the club’s long history stretches back to its inception in 1908 at the old Newtown Town Hall, and has remained connected to the Marrickville area since.

“Th ey were the fi rst club formed in Australian rugby league, on January 8, 1908,” Mr Dwyer said.

“Th ey weren’t one of the glamour teams.”Mr Dwyer described the club as a

“developmental powerhouse” and Newtown traditionally sees players move further into the limelight from the club into the NRL.

“Virtually all of the current fi rst grade Roosters team have come through Newtown,” Mr Dwyer said.

“When the Roosters played St George-Illawarra in the 2010 grand fi nal, of the 34 players used in the game – 17 on both sides – 18 had played with Newtown at some stage.”

Mr Dwyer described key club people like Kerry Rowney and Barry Vining as the “driving force” of the club’s success.

“Kerry is the man who has kept Newtown alive. He has put in huge amounts of his own money.”

Tickets to the victory dinner are $125 each or $1,150 for a table of 10. Ticket price includes food and drinks, limited edition ‘2012 – Th e Journey of the Jets’ DVD box set and a VB NSW Cup Premiers poster.

Be sure to RSVP by November 16 on 1300 36 36 90 to help the team celebrate.
