Peter Dyer School Council President

Principal’s Report Dear Parents/Carers, Disabled Parking at KPS At KPS we have a need for disabled parking. The first priority for these parking spaces should be for the drivers of disabled students. These students are unable to walk long distances and the parks are there to support them. It would be appreciated if the two car spots closest to the BER are left for such students. This would be very helpful. In addition to these two places, there are an additional 4 disabled parking spaces available at the front of the school. Police have informed us that they will be patrolling the roads within and around KPS in the near future. Student Safety Members of our school community are reminded to have conversation with their child/ren about personal safety at all times, and particularly on the way to and from school. Please ensure your child/ren knows which route they are expected to take and always encourage them to walk in pairs or small groups. Also talk with them about appropriate strategies if they encounter someone they do not know, or who makes them feel uncomfortable. Extreme Weather With the prediction of very warm weather, we will monitor the conditions very closely. On extreme days we will keep the students inside for additional time. In addition, we will remind students frequently about the importance of drinking water, applying sunscreen and wearing their hats. We appreciate your support in reinforcing these messages. With sunscreen it is appropriate for students to apply sunscreen before coming to school in the morning, and to carry sunscreen in their bags to apply during the day. Instructions for this should be clearly communicated to your child by you. Public Holiday A reminder that Monday 14

th March is the Labour Day

Public Holiday. Students do not attend school on this day.

Grade 6 Camp The Grade 6 Camp is in the last week of Term 1. Final payment for the Grade 6 Camp should already be finalised, if you haven’t please pay by Friday 5

th March

2016. Bookings at venues will be made reflecting the numbers of students where camp payment has been paid in full by this date. Every Day Counts – School Attendance We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes.

Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school, there are things we can do together to ensure they don’t fall behind:

Speak with your classroom teacher and find out what work your child needs to do to keep up.

Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child completes the plan.

Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as early as possible. From 1 March 2014, new laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending students to school without an acceptable reason. If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know so we can work together to get your child to school every day.

Student Information Full Detail Forms The forms which were given out on book pickup day need to be returned to the office ASAP, even if there are no changes.

Family Law Courts & Intervention Orders Families that have Family Law Court Orders or Intervention Orders are requested to provide a copy to the school so that the school can act in accordance with any orders. Family Law Court Orders stipulate the rights of both parties and enable us to act appropriately and lawfully. It is also appropriate that the school is in possession of the most recent Family Law Court Orders or Intervention Orders. Twilight Fair/ Community Night – Thursday 17

th March

This year our Twilight Fair is from 3:30pm until 6:00pm on Thursday 17

th March. We look forward to as many

members of our school community joining us as possible. Each class is running a stall and your help would be appreciated. We plan to have a BBQ meal available along with a range of rides and activities for our students. Please add this date to your calendar and take the opportunity to join with us for this special community event. Fair Competition At our Twilight Fair we will be holding a Fair Competition. The prizes will be Easter hampers. These have been very popular in the past. Tickets will be sold on the night of the fair for $1.00, and the winners will be drawn at approximately 5:45pm. If you are able to contribute to our prizes e.g. Easter eggs/chocolates, Easter soft toys, baskets for prizes, clear cellophane, tissue paper, coloured ribbon, Easter colouring books or general colouring books, pencils, crayons, stickers, notepads, and biscuits. Please bring your donations to the office. Please don’t send along any products containing nuts. (As has been the case in the past the office staff have promised not to eat them!!!) We hope to make up 10-12 prizes so all donations are greatly appreciated.

Rides/Fair Activities

At the Twilight Fair this year all activities and rides will be prepaid. Students and visitors can purchase a mega pass for $20.00 ($22.00 value - see draft sample) which will be hole punched at each activity. If students and or visitors want less or more value, $10.00 or $5.00 passes will also be available.

All rides/stalls accept mega passes only.

Cash is only accepted at the cake stall and coffee van.

The passes will be held at school until the day of the fair. Passes can be purchased from Monday 29

th February.

Personal Possessions The school insurance does not cover the loss or damage of personal possessions. Students are therefore encouraged to leave valuable personal possessions at home. The Link The Link is the main form of communication with you so please ensure that your child brings it home. The Link will be sent home with the youngest child in each family or look on www.kennington.vic.edu.au. The Link will be published on Thursdays. Sometimes, where we need to ensure that a piece of information gets to all of our school community, a notice will be repeated in a number of newsletters. Regards

Jo Menzel Acting Principal

Konnective

In order to improve communications between school and home we have recently purchased a school phone app that works on iPhones and android devices. The school will send out regular notifications via this app including reminders of upcoming events as well as links to newsletters. The app is called Konnective and can be downloaded free of charge from the App store or Google Play on your phone. Once you have downloaded the app you will need to register via the app. In the My Connections tab you can then select Kennington Primary School.

Whole School Handwriting Awards Handwriting is valued and celebrated at Kennington Primary School. Each week two students are selected to receive a handwriting award. These students are chosen according to criteria including the correct formation and size of letters, neatness and the overall presentation of book work. This year, there will also be a whole class award for the class which consistently strives to improve handwriting and book presentation. This will be chosen on a monthly basis. The names of students who have been chosen to receive the handwriting award will now be published in the newsletter, in advance, under the Kennington Primary School Values Awards section to further acknowledge the outstanding achievement and also to allow families to attend the presentation at assembly. The award winners will receive a certificate and a stationery item to keep, as well as a medal to wear during class time for the whole week.

Prep News We would like to invite our Grandparents to attend out “Grandparents and Special Friends” morning on Friday 11

th

March 2016. . We are very conscious of the fact that many students will not have grandparents close by, and hope that a special friend is able to attend instead. A special friend could be a babysitter, neighbour or family friend. Grandparents and special friends are welcome to go to their child’s classroom at 9:00am for activities and fun. The morning will conclude at 10:30am. Due to the size of the room, and potential of overwhelming our students, extra family members (mums, dads, toddlers) are asked not to go into the classroom. Thank you for your support with this. We look forward to meeting you on this day. Regards, The Prep Team

The Deaf facility – Will share about sign languge around the world. Did you know that each country has their own sign language? Despite this, Deaf people are very good at communicating with someone from a different country. Mime and gesture also help to understand each other.

The Choir For Harmony Day the Performance Choir will sing their first song for the year, " Walk a mile in my shoes", the classic song about compassion and tolerance. They will be placing shoes at the front that represent their own different life interests, and to demonstrate in a physical way, how we are all different. Please come along and help us celebrate Harmony Day. Michele Chng EAL Teacher

++++++++++++++ Bake Stall The School Fair is fast approaching. Once again, the Parents and Friends’ will be running a Bake Stall, where lots of yummy home cooked foods will be available to buy. We will be asking the school community to assist us with donating "baked" goods for the stall. All items need to be home-made; we cannot accept and sell pre-packaged, store bought items. It would be appreciated if all home baked goods were nut free also. We will be having small items to buy and eat on the spot like chocolate crackles or biscuits and larger things to take home like cakes, so anything you make would be fantastic. See the back page for the form to be attached with item. The Bake Stall will accept Mega Passes and cash on fair night.
