InHope Nov-Jan 2013/14 Welcome to Hope Church Ipswich! We believe that church is about God and His people. We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to join us as we celebrate and share God’s love. Our main Sunday

meetings start at 10:30am. Whether you are with us for the first time or have been coming for a few weeks, it’s great to

have you with us.

Who We Are. Hope Church is a group of ordinary people of every age and many different backgrounds. Some have only recently started

seeking Jesus while others have been Christians for many years. While still remaining diverse we do have some significant things in common:

• We have found the person of Jesus to be the answer to our deepest needs.• We have become committed both to him and to one another.• We love the Bible and God’s presence and look to experience both whenever we meet on Sundays and in Small Groups during the week.

We are part of Newfrontiers, a growing family of 600 churches on five continents. We are also a member of the Evangelical Alliance UK.

Where We Are Going. We want to build a significant church that demonstrates and declares the certain hope that can be found in Jesus (hence the name), that loves one another and serves the Waterfront community and Ipswich. We are on a big adventure together where ‘every life counts’ and everyone is involved.

Steve Jay Maurice Nightingale

What can I do with my trading cards? You should now have 21 cards. Please let us know if you’re missing any so we can help you complete your set!

1. Shuffle the cards. Put them back in the correct order. How quickly can you do it?

2. Shuffle the cards. Deal 1. Will the next card come before or after it? Deal 1. Were you right? Keep going until you get one wrong - how many did you get? Can you beat your score?

3. Pick a card at random. Look at the front. Can you remember the main point? Can you remember the key verse?

4. Use them as bookmarks for your bible - mark the story with the matching card so you’ll be able to find it easily.

5. Get together with a friend and play snap or pairs with the two sets

6. Lay the cards out in order. Ask someone to take one away. Which was it? Now ask them to take two at a time, or even three... Can you name the missing stories?

Thank you! Best memory of Jon and Hannah was at their wed-ding, celebrating their life together. It was an amazing day.Annabelle W

Thank you for the amazing thing you have talked to us about from the bible. I believe that often your words were straight from God.Russell

Hannah and I have really enjoyed our time with Youth4Hope. It’s an experience that’s shaped us and grown our faith, our parenting and discipleship. The group was always fun and exciting.

We really got to know the different personalities and characters during the 5 years we lead Newday, where we spent a whole week as their friend / acting parents. We dealt with issues from bloody noses and disagreements about sharing tents to how to stop farting and snoring!

More than anything it was wonderful to see some give their life to Jesus over the years and to see them grow into fine young men and women. Children can live in their parents’ shadow in church but we’ve seen many using spiritual gifts and creating their own mark at Hope. Many have become lead worshippers, talented musicians and drama stars! It’s been exciting to see their relationships with God and to encourage them - they’ve also encouraged us. Many who’ve moved through the group since we started are still on track with God at University, abroad in Europe and seeking marriage. For those who might have derailed - we still believe that God’s on their case and we’ll continue to pray for the prodigals to come home!

Recently the group has grown and been blessed by a South African and a number of Americans bringing a different flavour and more diversity and excitement to the group. We’ve enjoyed seeing new recruits quickly fit in and make friends!

Now feels the right time for us to lay down leading the youth work at Hope church. As we’re expecting baby number 3, it’ll be lovely to have time as a family establishing new routines. Kofi joins the youth in September and it’s not cool to have your parents as youth leaders!

Most of all we feel God has laid it on our heart to hand over to someone with a vision to take youth work to the next place – so we were very excited when Dan Wicks wanted to get involved (an answer to prayer). We know he’ll be great for the young people as he begins leadership after December. We look forward to seeing all the young people grow over the coming years and we’ll be very much involved in our relationships with them.

One Question for God

onequestion.org.ukf facebook.com/onequestion.ips

M @onequestion_ips

For the last 2 months we have been asking people the following question:

We have been at multicultural festivals, instigated call ins on BBC Suffolk radio station, greeted fresher’s at university fairs, sent out signals on social media, as well as asking our acquaintances and friends. Thank you everyone who made the survey happen!

After categorising and compiling we have discoveredthe six most asked questions (see right).

In the next couple of months we will be inviting people to the response talks based on these questions so that we can continue these discussions on faith and help us all explore life and think out loud.

The responses will be held on six consecutive Sundays from 3rd November - 8th December.

Speak to Gary Dean for more information

Every week, Christians around the country bring the Bible to life in primary schools through lively storytelling! Trevor Ford, Marscha Uys, and Susan Cornish from Hope Church Ipswich are amongst those sharing accounts of Bible notables using props, costumes, and drama. Portable versions of Giant Goliath and Jonah’s whale, Noah’s animals, and Joseph’s coat of many colours have all played a part in making God’s Word memorable to children in local schools!

“In two years a twenty year decline in Biblicalknowledge has been reversed.” Rev. Martin Thompson

Open the Book

The ‘Open the Book’ (OTB) ministry began in 1999 with a small group of volunteers in Bedford and has now blossomed

into an 8500-volunteer nationwide juggernaut. It

serves schools under the curriculum

requirement which states, ‘All schools must provide opportunities to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social

and cultural development’.

Trevor says, ‘hundreds of children

in towns and cities up and down the country are hearing all

the well known Bible stories before they reach the age of 11!’

“It makes the stories seem as if they’re

actually happening” Year 4 girl, Gloucestershire

In 2008, Hope Church believers joined this outreach with their Bible presentations for a primary school in Ipswich. They meet with others fortnightly to bring ‘The Book’ to eager listeners. In Ipswich, 22 schools are served in this way. ‘Let’s pray for this continued open door - there are those who would like to close it!’

Take two cups of pioneering faith, stir in three spoons of practical teaching, two spoons of worship and a generous measure of prophesy. Bake for four days and what have you got? A cake to fuel an explosion of church planting in the nations. This is what Relational Mission (RM) cooked up in Berkel, Holland in early October.

Seventy people made their way to Berkel, just a few miles from the Hook of Holland, for the 2013 RM Church Planting Conference. Seventy promising pioneers stirring the church planting pot. The people there represented established church plants, people about to go and those just exploring their calling. In every case God spoke into their situation, for many this conference was a defining moment.

Tom Shaw, Stef Liston, Mike Betts, Angela Kemm all added to the unique flavour of this event but most importantly God showed up and added the secret ingredient. As a movement of churches God is sending us to the nations and we only want to God where God tell us to go. The excitement of this conference was that we made space for God to direct us and that is a recipe for spirit fuelled mission. Check out the list: Luxembourg, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Canada, Belguim, UK, Finland Serbia, France, Sweden, China, Latvia, Poland and the list goes on...

Pioneers are ordinary people who allow God to use them for extraordinary things, so don’t count yourself out, you could be in the mix for the next conference!

At Hope Church we are part of this exciting movement of God, this is OUR mission. Keep up with the progress of church plants across the nations by visiting www.relationalmission.com

PIPSWEBTIP

You may have noticed that recently the Hope Church Ipswich webpage doesn’t look the same!

We’re currently undergoing a transformation of the look and feel of our website, incorporating new graphics and layout, plus updated content throughout the sections – this takes some time as you may imagine - Ben’s been working arduously on this with Julia’s guidance and the valuable input of leaders and staff over the last 6 months. We hope to finish developing the website by 2014, and by then have a refreshing new website with the following services available: • New and dedicated pages for ministries (Children at Hope and activities for Kids, Youth & Student ministry, Small groups, Events & Clubs, etc..)• Up to date events calendar• Renovated members area, making internal information more accessible and facilitating: - Communications between members - Rotas - Church resources (from documents and media to booking a room) - Identification of leaders and staff with their different responsibilities - Booking into church events, courses and activities - Access to exclusive content for leaders

We’re looking forward to our new user-friendly, accessible and useful website and are excited about the changes. We welcome any ideas or comments you may have to offer. If you would like to contact the communications team, email [email protected]

If you’ve ever wanted to get a better understanding of the key foundational concepts of the Bible and to think more biblically about life, the universe and everything then Wordplus is for you.

It was really informative, and brought me closer to understanding that day and age. I loved the second part with the

maps, it was really interesting to try and picture where everyone came from and looking at the maps of Israel now. Many Thanks Len!

Angela Ryan

It was a fantastic course with great teaching. It was really great to learn about the characters that appeared in the Old Testament.

Shaun Clarke

I found the first module a useful overview of the literature and history of the Old Testament. It encouraged me to focus on the

Bible in a way I don’t always have time for. Being able to complete a whole module over four evenings of a fortnight makes the commitment manageable. I also enjoyed spending time talking about different issues with the other members of the group and sharing sweet treats!

Next module in 2014The Greatness of God

Takes 2 weeks, running over 4 evenings (Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday)

You can sign up to 1 or more of the modules or just take it one at a time.

For more information or to book yourself in, contact the Church Office.

You may not know that Hope Church runs Daytime Alpha in addition to the‘usual’ evening slot. Mike McLean caught up with Rachael Crawley and Ann South, just before the new course started on Thursday 24th October:

“One course has already run, and we’re about to start the second. It runs on the same morning as Tots – it’s great, especially for parents who can’t come to the evening sessions. They know that their children are safely cared for, leaving them free to participate in a small, informal Alpha meeting. Last time we had three people attend, two women and one man, and the group was very open. Guests were at ease to ask questions and to express their opinions. We watched the Nicky Gumbel videos, and then talked about it – it was relaxed, and

just like chatting, really! We very much enjoyed it and it had an impact on everyone. They had lots of questions about Christianity, and it was good to see them being open to finding out more and moving forward in their knowledge.

We’re looking forward to the next course: we’ve got some new people coming, friends of various church members, who seem very keen to explore what it’s all about.”

Is there someone you know, who could benefit from a daytime course in the future? In the meantime, please pray for Rachael, Ann, and all the participants!

The Ipswich Winter Night Shelter has been providing warm shelter, nourishment, and the love of Christ shown through His people to the needy of Ipswich since 2011. Louise Brown of Felixstowe initiated the joint effort of seven area churches, each of which dedicates one night a week to sharing its facilities with those who have no place to call home. Volunteers from these churches and the community pitch in to cook food, set up sleeping quarters, and spend time with the people who come to stay.

Brian Anstey, Hope Church’s night shelter co-ordinator, said of the initial meeting calling for volunteers for the fledgling ministry, “...we didn’t know how many people to expect. I said that if we didn’t get at least 100 people, it would be hard to man. 300 people turned up and nearly all of them volunteered!”

for further details

The enthusiastic voluntary participation has continued in the subsequent winters; and the program, now entering its third year, has served hundreds of local homeless people, giving them provision, hope, and tangible evidence that God and His people care for them. One of last year’s shelter guests even stated that he would like to return to the shelter in the future – as a volunteer!

From last year two guests have now found permanent homes

This chapter offers a different flavour from Wilson’s writing until this point. Where the focus has been on scientific concepts and the ‘mind’ this evidence might point towards - the ‘if God’ of the title - it now noticeably shifts to an imagining of what a world set right might look like - the ‘then what?’

It is interesting, Wilson notes, that there is common agreement that something is ‘wrong’ with the world, despite us having no ideal to compare it to. He suggests that any solution would have to come not - though we’ve tried - from the flawed people, but from a creator God. He proposes four things such a God would need to do.

Wilson decides that imagining a world saved by God is too large a challenge for the average human mind, so he narrows his focus to just one city - London. “This might sound fluffy and religious”, he says. Yes - but if you really think about the picture he paints, it also sounds very interesting.

Review by Hannah MacFarlane

Up to November 2013 - If God Then What? By Andrew Wilson From January 2014- Emotionally Healthy Church by Peter Scazzero

It’s not too late to get stuck in. Get a book from the Welcome Area on Sunday and get reading!

£6.50£10

In this Chapter, Andrew Wilson starts his ‘journey’ in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin where a display case has ancient documents describing the event of Jesus of Nazareth rising from the dead and describe it as the turning point of History

This sets Andrew to consider and disprove all of the other alterative explanations for Jesus rising from the dead. He considers the fact that Jesus being alive is almost a historical certainty – would someone have not looked in the tomb to disprove the claims?

Finally he considers two eminent scholars who come up with different conclusions but have the exact same evidence. He concludes that as the historical evidence points to an empty tomb then there can only be 2 explanations – if you don’t believe there is a God then you won’t believe the resurrection but if you have faith in Jesus as our Lord and saviour then faced with the overwhelming evidence you have to accept that the resurrection took place.

1 Superbook (from Christian Broadcasting Network) This app is a bible. But... embedded in the text are videos, images, quizzes, character profiles and interactive games - so as you read, extras for that bible passage are instantly accessible. The animation and images come from the Emmy nominated Superbook series.

It’s biblical - It is the bible! - a handful of versions are available in the settings. There’s also a clear gospel presentation and an excellent section of answers to children’s common questions - with references (useful for parents too!)It’s easy - The menus and links are clear and simple to navigate and there’s more than one way to find content. It’s well made - The images, animations and games look good and work well. It’s free - No upfront cost. No in app purchases. And it’s online too.

2 Club Jelly TellyA huge library of Christian children’s programming from ‘The Rizers’ to ‘What’s in the Bible?’ and ‘Henry Hand Puppet’ to ‘The Jesus Storybook Bible’ to watch on the go.

It’s safe - Fun children’s TV with great values and without adverts. It’s easy - There’s a daily video on the front page and beyond that, the menu is really simple. You can also mark videos as ‘favourites’ to go back to.It’s well made - This is from Phil Vischer and his team, known for ‘Veggie Tales’ and ‘What’s in the Bible’ and it’s just as good - the blog is worth a browse for parents too. It’s inexpensive - This app ties in to Jellytelly.com. The small monthly cost is more than justified by the huge amount of videos, games and printable activities included though, and there’s a free trial to start you off.

3 Amazing diaryNot so much a faith app as a tool. Use it to keep a record of family devotional times with photos, audio recordings and notes, - every family member can contribute.

It’s flexible - Use as little or often as you like. Add words, audio or photos and sort your entries with tags: prayers, verses, lyrics, truths, questions... you’re only limited by your imagination. It’s faith building - Keeping a journal is a great way to record your journey. Remind your family of answered prayers, special moments, favourite verses and areas where you’ve grown togetherIt builds relationship - When everyone contributes, children are actively learning rather than passively listening. It’s inexpensive - at 69p (iphone) for the full version, & the ‘lite’ version is free.

A Warm Welcome in

Where are they now?

After leaving Ipswich and spending a couple of weeks with family, we arrived safely in Chile. We’ve been received with a lot of affection by Marita’s family and are enjoying lots of hearty Chilean dishes like ‘congrio’ conger eel which was tasty and is very popular in this part of Chile. From a surprisingly good British summer, we’ve had to acclimatise to the relative cold!

The girls are well and enjoying being spoilt by their grandparents. They have some interesting conversations in a mixture of English and Spanish (everyone here is quick to point out that their Spanish will soon be better than Daddy’s).

We’ve been meeting in houses to break bread on a Sunday and have uplifting fellowship and bible study during the week. The meetings are simple and have a spontaneous feel whether singing songs, praying or sharing words from the bible. In one meeting, 2 people were saved amongst floods of tears and we’ve seen a baptism in a lagoon near our house.

Praise God that He is the God that saves - the same God in Chile as in Ipswich!

We’d value prayer as I’m still no clearer of what I’ll do workwise and also as we prepare for Catalina to begin school here in March.

In His love,Chris and Marita Nicholson.

Thanks so much for your prayers as we returned to China.

We’ve relocated to Guiyang where I was from 2000 to 2006 and have found a large apartment. It’s basic with bare concrete floors, but in a good location for a very reasonable price for Guiyang (gui means expensive and it is!)

I still have no work visa but my new employers are working towards that. I’m working for a small language centre in its infancy, owned by some brave young believers. They’re being faithful to provide more than just a language centre. It’s more challenging than my previous university teaching... Father loves to stretch and grow us!

We’d appreciate prayers for Toria’s adoption, our visa situation, financial provision (including a reliable new tenant for our little house in Ipswich), and to grow in what our amazing Lord has for and through us here. Blessings Karen and Ko

Mark & Sarah AndrewsOur group has a focus on including the whole of the family in what we do. We meet on a Tuesday night twice a month and on a Saturday morning once a month. On Saturday mornings the kids enjoy bible teaching, singing, puppets, games and outdoor fun, while the men and women take it in turns to study the bible and share in small groups. You don’t have to have kids to be part of our group, but you may find you gain some little friends. [email protected]

Paul & Ali CherryThis small group gathers the great and the good of the hinterland known locally as “Kesgrave”. For “Kesgrave” read “pretty much anywhere you can go east of Ipswich without getting your feet wet”. We meet every Wednesday alternating between “normal” small group meetings and socials. The socials are a mix of men’s evenings, ladies evenings and family events. The venue rotates around people’s houses; the aim being to allow as many people (i.e. those with kids), to make it.Wednesday evenings. Kesgrave / Woodbridge. [email protected]
