PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Wichita A’s Meeting Minutes October 28, 2019 Minisa Park

President Alan Orr called the October 28, 2019 meeting to order and led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were no new members or guests to introduce. It was moved by Jim Broadhead and seconded by Wayne Orr to approve the September minutes as printed in the newsletter. Motion carried. Claudia Ellerman gave the treasurers report. There were no reports from MARC & MAFCA, Wichita Area Car Council or Sunshine Lady. Denny Ellerman reported that he cooked hot dogs and a good time was had by all at All Ford’s Day. We had a nice showing of cars from our club in attendance. Jim Broadhead reported that he and Brenda, Bob & Barb Phye, and Jim & Carolyn Nungesser attended the MAFCA National Tour in Kanub, Utah. They traveled over 2,700 miles with-out any incidents. He stated the weather was gorgeous and they had a terrific time. There were 375 Model A’s, mostly from the California area but a few from as far away as the east coast. Alan Orr announced that the Board of Directors had chosen Francis and Ruth Grady as the recipients of the latest MAFFI brick to be placed at the Gilmore Museum. Tom Ruggles reported that the Men’s Tour was cancelled but he will try to reschedule for the spring of 2020. Refunds will be issued to those that had already paid. Don Waller announced that on Nov. 2nd, the club will be taking a tour to the Mennonite Thanksgiving Dinner in Yoder, KS. We will gather in the south parking lot of St. Theresa’s Hospital on west 21st street in Wichita. The tour will leave promptly at 11 AM. Kathy James and Vicki Hildibrand reported that the Ladies Christmas luncheon will be Dec. 7th from 11-1:30 at LaGalette French Bakery in Wichita. Ladies are asked to bring items to donate to The Tree House. Mike James announced that the Club Christmas Party will be Dec. 14th at the Senior Center in Delano District in Wichita. Following refreshments were provided by Vicki Hildibrand, Glenda Sill, JoAnn Bruce and Debbie Rice. Tom Ruggles presented a program titled “Model A Parts Identification”. Meeting adjourned Judi Sharp Secretary

With the cold weather around the corner and the Holidays upon us, it may be time to put the “A” up for the winter. Now is the time to do the work on the old car that you have been putting off. Making next years tours as break-down free as possible. Please keep the Gilbert Adam’s family in your hearts and prayers, with the passing of Joanna. She and her big smile will be missed. I also want to remind everyone to bring canned goods to our November Meeting, so others not as fortunate as us may be able to enjoy a meal during the holidays. Gil Adams has volunteered to deliver our donations again this year. President Alan Orr

MAFCA Canyonlands 2019 National Tour

We left on October 3rd and arrived home October 14th after 2,750 miles. 375 cars were registered and 350 cars actually came to this huge national tour. There were 4 cars from the Wichita A’s that braved the trip to Kanab, Utah. Bob and Barb Phye, Jim and Brenda Broadhead and Jim and Carolyn Nungesser. Max Bahre and Paula Scott trailered their Model A and met up with us in Kanab. We traveled to Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park in Utah and the North Rim Grand Canyon in Arizona. While there and along the way we visited Bents Old Fort National Historic Site, an alligator farm, Glen Canyon Dam at Lake Powell, museums, caves, Little Hollywood where old westerns were filmed, Best Friends animal sanctuary and Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park where the Nungesser’s were towed out by AAA on a Garmin failure! A new carburetor, new battery, changed fused and a few timing adjustments was about the extent of our car problems. Picturesque scenery, amazing weather, great friends and many laughs made our trip a vacation to remember. A special thanks to the Phyes and the Broadhead’s hard work on their planning to make our a adventure a grand suc-cess! Submitted by Carolyn Nungesser

Mennonite Thanksgiving Dinner

There were 14 people and 7 cars that headed out for Yoder, Ks and the Thanksgiving Dinner! We all had a great time. First we stopped at the St. Mark Catholic Church in Colwich. There we had a wonderful church member who gave us very detailed information about the church with very good dates. We saw tombstones with information in Ger-man-everyone seemed to enjoy the walk in the cemetery! A special Thank You to Greg Rau for setting this up for us. From the church we went down a black top road directly to the dinner! I’m sure everyone left feeling full !! Submitted by Don & Donna Waller

THANKSGIVING FACTS, TRADITIONSAND OTHER BITS OF INFOR-MATION RELATING TO THE HISTORY OF THANKSGIVING

Every President since Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving Day. But in 1930, 1940, and 1941 Franklin D. Roosevelt pro-claimed Thanksgiving the third Thursday in November to lengthen the holiday shopping season. This upset the people. That same year, congress declared Thanksgiving as a national holiday to be on the fourth Thursday in November. 91% of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day. Thomas Jefferson thought the concept of Thanksgiving was “the most ridiculous idea I’ve ever heard.” Benjamin Franklin wanted the national bird to be a turkey. Turkeys were one of the first animals in the Americas to be domesticated. A spooked turkey can run at speeds up to 20 miles per hour. They can also burst into fight approaching speeds between 50-55 mph in a matter of seconds. Fifty percent of Americans put the stuffing inside the Turkey. More than 40 million green bean casseroles are served on Thanksgiving. Twenty percent of cranberries are eaten on Thanksgiving. In October of 1777 all 13 colonies celebrated Thanksgiving for the first time: however it was a one-time affair commem-orating a victory over the British at Saratoga. There are three places in the United States named after the holiday’s main course-Turkey, Texas, Turkey Creek, LA, and Turkey, NC. There are also nine townships around the country named “Turkey,” with three in Kansas. The Guinness Book of Records states that the greatest dressed weight recorded for a turkey is 86 lbs, at the annual “heaviest turkey” competition held in London, England on December 12, 1989. In an effort to keep our museum exhibits new an different, we have appreciated our association with NATMUS (National Automotive and Truck Museum) in Auburn, Indiana. They have been willing to use several of our Model A Trucks and service vehicles in one of their exhibits and have made several improvements to display them. This has opened up area in our museum to bring in newly donated vehicles and to showcase others. Dave Yarde who is one of our Trustees is also the Executive Director of NATMUS and we appreciate his willingness to work with us on this effort. Also a special thank you to Randy Czubko and his grandson Tyler, Stan and Mary Sorrels, Greg Fish, Jerry Morrisey and Lou Ironside for their help in the move. If you haven’t been to NATMUS, you should make it a destination. It is well worth seeing and it is adjacent to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum which also has an amazing showroom of beautiful cars. Your continued support of MAFFI through your membership and donations is always appreciated. Rational for converting the Model ‘A’ Electrical system to 12 volts

1. Some may not agree with this but this is my personnel experience. There are several advantages in doing this unless you want a show car, most of us have drivers.

2. The stock 6 volt Generator is not regulated, and if the third Brush is set at more than 8 Amps charge it can burn up the Generator, Battery, and blow Light Bulbs on a long drive. The Starter cranks slow and the 6 volt Battery’s have a short life compared to 12 volt ones.

3. By installing a Delco one wire 12 Volt Alternator, a 12 Volt Battery, you have faster starting, brighter lights, and Volt-age regulation to keep the battery fully charged even with night time driving. You will be able to run a 12 Volt CB, Phone Charger, or accessory’s that would require a Converter with a 6 volt system.

4. The 6 Volt Ignition Coil can be used with the addition of a 1.5 Ohm Resistor in series with the Positive side of the Coil. (Part number AL-795). This can be purchased at Auto Zone for 6 bucks. A lot cheaper than a new coil. Switch the Battery to a Negative Ground, reverse the Ammeter leads, Connect the Coil Plus to Positive 12 Volts, the negative side to the Red Ignition Switch wire and you are ready to go.

5. The Six Volt Starter can be used if you do not crank on it for a long period of time and over heat it. It is best to install a new set of 12 volt field coils in the Starter. I ran my Model ‘A’ for years before I converted the Starters to 12 Volts.

6. I have Four Model ‘A’s this way, I should have done it many years ago. Submitted by Jim Broadhead
