Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I would like to welcome you all to this evening of celebration and thanks to mark retirements of our academics and colleagues: Ingrid Hook, Des Corrigan, John Clancy, and Owen Corrigan.

Each of these individuals has made unique contributions not only to our School, but also to Irish and international pharmacy and so their presence in our midst will be missed. We know, however, that we can continue to rely on their combined wealth of expertise and experience to help us resolve challenges and continue to excel in the future.

The evening will include a student awards event, recognising our excellent Pharmacy undergraduates.

I am delighted to mark this milestone in a never-stopping relay of academic values, skills and generations.

Prof Marek Radomski, MD, PhD, FTCD, Doctor Honoris Causa (CUM) Head of School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences

Ingrid Hook has played a pivotal role in the development of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Trinity College Dublin. She has impressed us all over the years with her commitment to Science, Pharmacy and Education. Her dedication to the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science was evident when she stepped into the position of Head of School during most challenging times. Ingrid was a source of support and guidance to many of her colleagues during this period.

Ingrid qualified as a Pharmacist in 1965 and worked in hospital pharmacy until 1969. In 1970 she was appointed as Lecturer in Pharmacognosy at the College of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, Ballsbridge, which became part of TCD in 1977.

Over the years Ingrid has been a highly regarded teacher within College to undergraduates (BSc Pharmacy, Botany) and postgraduates. Ingrid has supervised numerous Master’s and Doctoral research students who have progressed to very senior and influential positions in Pharmacy, Industry and in legislative bodies in this country and abroad. Most of Ingrid’s postgraduate students were women who benefitted from having her as a mentor and role model.

Ingrid has been involved in academic research, of the highest standard, throughout her academic career. Her national and international reputation is a consequence of her resilience and ability. It is hard to imagine that in the 1990’s, from the very basic research environment in Shrewsbury Road, Ingrid managed to secure EU funding with an international consortium headed by Professor Professor Meinhart H. Zenk in Germany. As a consequence of her research activity Ingrid has published numerous research papers and articles.

Her work has ranged from the botanical, to cell tissue culture, drug discovery and genetics. Her research equipment has ranged from state of the art to improvised cell cultures vessels in old fashioned milk bottles (when there was no money). Some of her work was ahead of its time, in particular her micro-algal work in 1991 that was funded through the Irish – American partnership with Pfizer Chemical Corporation.

Ingrid has held many positions of responsibility within College which include, Head of School, as well as membership and Chair of numerous committees and sub-committees including University Council, Graduate Studies Committee, Senior Promotions Committee, Central Fellowship Committee, College Safety Committee, Science Faculty Committee, Head of Schools Committee and college Tutor.

Nationally Ingrid has held positions including Member of Council and Executive, Consumer Association of Ireland, CAI Representative to Health and Safety Authority, Advisory Sub-Committee on Dangerous Substances. She currently holds positions as a Member of Comhairle na Nimheanna (The Poisons Board), an expert to the Herbal Medicines Sub-Committee of the IMB and is a Member of Science Sub-committee of the Royal Dublin Society (RDS). Ingrid also currently holds international positions representing Ireland on the Scientific Committee of European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP) and is a representative on the WP2 in Good Practice in Traditional Chinese medicine research in the Post-genomic Era (GP-TCM) Funded under 7th FWP (Seventh Framework Programme)

As you may know Des Corrigan took early retirement from College in September 2008 after dedicating over 40 years to the profession of Pharmacy and Academia in particular. He was appointed as Lecturer in Pharmacognosy (ie natural products used in pharmacy & medicine) to teach students then enrolled at the College of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, Ballsbridge, which became part of TCD in 1977. Des was then appointed Senior Lecturer and Head of the Pharmacognosy Department in 1981. An active involvement in the politics of the Faculty of Science followed, especially as Director of the School from 1997 to 2003. He was in fact the last incumbent of this position!

Over the years Des has been a highly regarded teacher within College to undergraduates (BSc Pharmacy), postgraduates (MSc Pharmacy and in Drug and Alcohol Policy), to the profession-in the continuous education programmes run by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland and as an invited speaker at international conferences. He has of course supervised research students and written numerous research papers and articles.

Positions of responsibility within College have included Tutor, Head of Department, School Director and Co-academic Director of the Addiction Research Centre, as well as membership and Chair of numerous committees and sub-committees.

The subject of Pharmacognosy includes as an integral part - Phytotherapy, Herbal Medicine, as well as Drugs of Abuse. Des has become an expert in these areas and excelled in raising the public’s awareness on aspects of these. No good radio or television programme would be complete without an interview with Des! In recognition of this expertise he was and still is a member of many national and international committees, as well as government advisory committees on Herbal Medicine (Irish Medicine Board; European Scientific Committee on Phytotherapy; National expert on Committee 13B of the European Pharmacopeia) and Drug Addiction (Chairperson, Scientific Committee of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction [EMCDDA] based in Lisbon) to name but a few.

John Clancy retired from College in September 2008 having spent over 40 years in Academia, in particular devoted to the profession of Pharmacy. John was appointed as Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1963 to teach students of Pharmacy then enrolled at the College of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, Shrewsbury Road, Ballsbridge, which became part of TCD in 1977. John’s original research centred on sulphur chemistry and his PhD thesis completed under the supervision of Professor RF Timoney was titled “Studies in the chemistry of Sulphur analogues of Coumarin”. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in 1977, and took over as Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1987, following the retirement of Professor RF Timoney. His ten year period as Head saw a number of significant developments in the School including the very successful transfer of the School to a new location on the main College campus. He also played a major role in the significant expansion of the research activities in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and was actively involved in the refurbishment of the School Board Room after the transfer onto the Campus Site, a project of which he is justifiably proud.

Over the years John has been a most knowledgeable teacher of Pharmaceutical Chemistry to many generations of Pharmacy undergraduates (BSc Pharmacy) in College and is well remembered as a most entertaining lecturer. More recently John was responsible for the design and introduction in the School of the very successful taught postgraduate MSc programme in Pharmaceutical Analysis and acted as the Director of this course in the period 1999-2008.

He has supervised research students, and provided valuable contributions to the MSc/Diploma in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology. His specialist lecture topics were Pharmaceutical Analysis and Regulatory Affairs, both areas in which he is a recognised expert and consultant to the pharmaceutical industry.

His knowledge of Pharmaceutical Chemistry particularly in the context of the profession of Pharmacy together with his expertise in the specific requirements of the pharmaceutical industry are well recognised. His recent publications include several papers on the design and evaluation of aspirin prodrugs.

John has held positions of responsibility within College over the years including membership of various committees and sub-committees most recently the Graduate Studies Committee where he represented the School as Director of Postgraduate Teaching and Learning (2005-2008). Although John retired from full time position in the School in September 2008, he is still very actively involved in the delivery of several postgraduate taught courses, in particular the MSc in Pharmaceutical Analysis.
