    IMPORTANT INFORMATION CONCERNING UHF CB RADIO

    TheuseofthecitizenBandradioserviceislicensedinaustraliabytheacMaradiocommunications(citizensBandradioStations)classLicenceandinnewZealandbytheMinistryofeconomicDevelopmentnewZealand(MeD).aGeneraluserradioLicenceforcitizensBandradioandoperationissubjecttoconditionscontainedinthoselicences.

    TheclasslicenceforusersandequipmentoperatinginthecB/prS477MHzbandhasbeenamended.Thisradiomeetsthenew80channelstandard.

    insimpletermsthesameamountofspectrumisavailable;however,radiotransceiverscannowoperateinanarrowerbandwidthandhenceuselessspectrum.Theseradiosaregenerallyreferredtoasnarrowbandor12.5kHzradios.Byusing12.5kHzchannelspacinginsteadof25kHz,the40channelsoriginallyallocatedcannowbeexpandedto80channelstherebydoublingthechannelcapacityandrelievingcongestionintheuHfcB/prSband.

    Original40channelwidebandradioswillcontinuetooperateontheoriginal40channels,howevertheywillnotbeabletoconverseonthenewerchannels41–80.Thenewernarrowbandradioswillbeabletoconversewithallolder40channelwidebandradiosonallchannels1to40aswellasthenewerchannelsallocatedfrom41to80.

    Themixingofnarrowbandandwidebandradiosinthesamespectrumcancausesomepossibleoperatingissuesofinterferenceandvaryinglevelsofreceivedvolume.

    POSSIBLE ISSUES

    Whenanewnarrowbandradioreceivesatransmissionfromanolderwidebandradiothespeechmaysoundloudanddistorted-simplyadjustyourradiovolumeforbestperformance.

    Whenanolderwidebandradioreceivesasignalfromanewnarrowbandradio,thespeechmaysoundquiet-simplyadjustyourradiovolumeforbestperformance.

    Dependingonhowcloseyourreceivingradioistoanothertransmittingradio,therecanbeinterferencefromthetransmittingradioifitisusingachanneladjacenttothechannelyouarelisteningto.Simplytrygoingupordownafewchannelsfromthecurrentlyselectedchannel.

    Theabovesituationsarenotafaultoftheradiobutasymptomofoperatingwidebandandnarrowbandradiosinthesamebandwidth.Thispossibleinterferencewilldecreaseovertimeasthepopulationofwidebandradiosagesanddecreases.

    EMERGENCY CHANNELSTheacMahasallocatedchannels5/35foremergencyuseonly.channel5istheprimarySimplexemergencychannel.Whereachannel5repeaterisavailable,youshouldselectDuplexoncH5.

    NoTe: channel35istheinputchannelforthechannel5repeaterthereforechannel35shouldalsonotbeusedforanythingotherthanemergencytransmissions.

    TELEMETRY CHANNELSacMaregulationshaveallocatedchannels22and23fortelemetryonlyapplicationsandhaveprohibitedthetransmissionofspeechonthesechannels.consequently theTX4600hasatransmitinhibitappliedtochannels 22and23.

    intheeventadditionaltelemetry/telecomandchannelsareapprovedbytheacMa,thesechannelsshallbeaddedtothosecurrentlylistedwherevoicetransmissionisinhibited.currentlytransmissionsonchannels61,62and63arealsoinhibitedandthesechannelsarereservedforfutureallocation.

    GENERAL OPERATION

    FUNCTION KEY

    ThefourkeysbeneaththeTX4600’sdisplayhavebothprimaryandsecondaryfunctions.TheirprimaryfunctionsareprintedinBlackwhiletheirsecondaryfunctionsareprintedinred.

    To access the primary functions

    Simplypresstherequiredkey. eg.TocontroltheSquelch,brieflypresstheSQLkey.

    To access the secondary functions

    presstheFkeyfollowedimmediatelybytherequiredkey.eg.ToDimthedisplay,brieflypresstheFkey(‘f’isdisplayed),thenpresstheDIMkey.Thedisplaywilldim.

    NoTe: ifthesecondarykeyisnotpressedwithin10secondstheFkeyselectionwillbecancelled.

    VOLUME ON/OFF

    rotatethevolumecontrolclockwisepastthe‘click’toturntheTX4600on.continuetoadvancethecontrolclockwisetoincreasethevolume.rotatethecontrolcounterclockwisetoturntheradiooff.

    NoTe: atminimumvolumesettingthereisstillsufficientvolumetobeheardinaquietcabinenvironment.

    SELECTING CHANNELS

    Brieflypressthechannel keytostepupwardsonechannelorthechannel keytostepdownwardsonechannel.ahighbeepwillbeheardateachpress.

    pressandholdthe or keyfor1.5secondstoscrollquicklyupwardsordownwardsthroughthechannelsatarateof10channelspersecond.Whenthekeyisreleasedchannelscrollingstops.

    TRANSMITTING

    priortotransmitting,alwayscheckthechannelisnotbeingused.Thiscanbedonebyeitherlisteningorbycheckingthe‘Busy’indicatorisnotlit.

    Totransmit,pressthepTT(push-to-Talk)buttononthemicrophone.Holdthemicrophoneabout5-8cmfromyourfaceandspeakatanormalvoicelevel.Themicrophoneisquitesensitivesoitisnotnecessarytoraiseyourvoiceorshout.releasethepTTwhenyouhavefinishedtalking.

    SqUELCH CONTROL.

    TheSquelchcontrolisusedtoeliminatethebackgroundnoisewhentherearenosignalspresent.TheTX4600

    featuresapresetSquelchsystem.TheSquelchsensitivityhasbeenfactorysettoprovideoptimumperformanceinmostenvironments,howeverthesensitivitycanbealteredbytheuserifrequired,tosuitvaryingenvironmentalsituations.

    TheSquelchcanbeopenedorclosedwiththeSQLkey.WhentheSquelchisopen,thereceiver’sbackgroundnoisecanbeheardand‘BuSy’isdisplayed.WhentheSquelchisclosed,thereceiverremainsquietwhentherearenosignalspresentbutanincomingsignalwilloverridethesquelchandbeheardinthespeaker.

    To open the squelch

    BrieflypresstheSQLkey.alowbeepwillbeheard.iftherearenosignalspresentyouwillhearthereceiver’sbackgroundnoise.

    To close the Squelch,

    BrieflypresstheSQLkeyagain.ahighbeepwillbeheardandthereceiverwillbecomequiet.

    NoTe: ifanincomingsignalisveryweakandisclosetotheminimumsquelchlevel,itmaybecomebrokenor‘chopped’bythesquelchaction.Topreventthis,simplyopentheSquelchtoallowthesignaltobeheardclearly.alternativelyyoucanreducetheSquelchsensitivityasdescribedbelow.

    SqUELCH SENSITIVITY

    ThesensitivityoftheSquelchtoincomingsignalscanbesettosuityouroperatingenvironment.forexample,excessivelynoisyenvironmentsmaycausethesquelchtoopenonlocalnoise.TheTX4600hastenpresetSquelchsensitivitysettingsthatcanbeselectedusingtheMENUfunction.

    To adjust the preset Squelch sensitivity

    pleaserefertotheMENUsettingsonpage18.

    PRIORITY CHANNEL

    Theprioritychannelfeatureallowsyoutostoreoneof thechannelsasaprioritychannelthatcanbeinstantlyrecalledatthepressofakey.Thiscanbeusedtoprovideinstantaccesstoyourworkingchanneloryourlocalrepeaterchannel.

    To store a Priority Channel:

    1.Selecttherequiredchannel.

    2.pressandholdthePRIkeyuntilahighbeepisheard.Theselectedchannelwillbestored.

    To recall a Priority Channel:

    BrieflypressthePRIkey.Theradiowillswitchstraighttotheselectedprioritychannel.anyactivefunctions(such asscanningorQuiet)willbecancelled.

    DUPLEx OPERATION

    Duplexoperationallowstheradiototransmitonadifferentfrequencytothatwhichisreceives.Thisallowsoperationthroughlocalrepeaterstations.Theserepeaterstationsautomaticallyre-transmityoursignaloverawiderarea,providinggreatlyincreasedrange.

    Duplexoperationisonlyavailableonchannels1-8and41-48.Whenduplexisselectedonthesechannels,theradioreceivesonthatchannelbutactuallytransmits30channelshigher.

    CTCSS

    OVERVIEw

    cTcSS(continuousTonecodedSquelchSystem)isasquelchquietingsystemthatallowsseveralgroupsofuserstosharethesamechannelwithoutdisturbingeachother.itusesapresetsub-audible(verylowfrequency)tonetoopenandclosethesquelchonyourradio.Thereareupto50tonesavailableintwooptionaltonesets.Thesystemappliesacontinuouslow-leveltonetoyourtransmissionandusesamatchingtonedecodertocontrolyourreceiver’ssquelch.WithcTcSSenabled,thechannelremainsquiettoallincomingsignalsunlesstheycarrythecorrecttone.Whenatransmissionwiththecorrecttoneisreceived,thesquelchopensandremainsopenforaslongasthesignalispresent.Whenthetransmissionends,thechannelbecomesquietagain.Transmissionsthatdonotusethecorrecttonewillnotbeheard.

    TheTX4600allowscTcSStobeenabledordisabledonindividualchannels.

    NoTe: ThecTcSStoneyouselectwillbeusedforallcTcSSenabledchannelsinyourradio.

    MONITORING THE CHANNEL

    itisusefultobeabletotemporarilyopenyourradio’ssquelchtoallowyoutolistenforsignalsfromothercTcSSusersoutsideyourgroup.BecausetheircTcSStoneisdifferenttoyours,yoursquelchwouldnormallyremainclosed,preventingyoufromhearingthem.youcanusetheSQLkeytoopenthesquelchandlistentothechanneltocheckthatitisclearbeforetransmitting.Thiswillhelppreventyoufromaccidentallytransmittingoverthetop ofsomeone.

    To monitor the channel

    presstheSQLkey.iftherearenosignalspresent,youwillheartheusualhissofanemptychannel.presstheSQLkeyagaintorestoretheSquelchtoitsprevioussetting.

    SELECTING THE TONE SET

    Therearetwostandardtonessetsavailable,onecomprising50tonesandtheothercomprising38tones.BothtonesetsareincludedintheTX4600toprovidecompatibilitywithotherGMeradiosystems.

    SELECTING THE REqUIRED CTCSS TONE

    TopreselectthecTcSStoneonyourradio,pleaserefertotheMenusettingsonpage19.

    ENABLING CTCSS ON A CHANNEL

    ifacTcSStonehasbeenselected,itcanbeenabledonindividualchannels.

    TheTX4600hasaScanfunctionthatallowsgroupsofuserprogrammablechannelstobescannedforsignals.channelscanbescannedat20channelspersecond.Whenasignalisfound,scanningwillpauseonthatchanneltoallowthesignaltobeheard,thenresumescanningwhenthechannelisclearagain.

    Open Scan

    allowsanyoftheinstalledchannelstobescannedforactivity.ifabusychannelisfound,scanningwillpausetoallowthesignaltobeheard.Oncethechannelhasbeenclearfor5seconds,scanningwillresumeautomatically.

    SELECTING A SCAN GROUP

    To preselect a scan group

    TheradioisinitiallysettoOpenScanMode.pleaserefertotheMENUsettingsonpage18tochangetheScanGroup.

    PROGRAMMING SCAN CHANNELS

    yourTX4600issuppliedwithall80uHfcBchannelsprogrammedintotheOpenScanmemory.anychannelsnotneeded,canberemovedifrequired.TheGroupScanmemoryisemptybydefaultandyouwillneedtoadd channelstoitbeforeuse.

    To add or remove channels from either scan memory:

    1.ensurethattheradioisnotalreadyscanning.ifitis,brieflypresstheSCANkeytocancelthescanfunction.

    2.ensureyouhavetherequiredscangrouppreselected(SeeMENUsettingsonpage18).

    3.Selecttherequiredchannelusingthe or keys.

    •if‘M’isvisibletotherightofthechannelnumber,theselectedchannelisalreadyinthescanmemory.itcanberemovedbyholdingtheSCANkeyinforafewsecondsuntilalowbeepisheard.‘M’willthendisappearindicatingthechannelisnolonger inmemory

    •if‘M’isnotvisible,thentheselectedchannelisnot inthememory.Toaddit,holdtheSCANkeyinforafewsecondsuntilahighbeepisheard.‘M’will nowappear.

    4.repeatstep3toaddorremoveotherchannelsinthescanmemory.

    TO START SCANNING

    Tobeginscanning,brieflypresstheSCANkey.ahighbeepwillbeheard,‘Scan’willappearinthedisplayandtheradiowillbeginscanning.inadditiontheselectedscangroupwillbedisplayedbelowthechannelnumber.

    NoTe: ifthereisonlyonechannelprogrammedintotheOpenScanmemoryornoneintheGroupScanmemory,alonglowbeepwillbeheardwhenyoupresstheSCANkeyandthecommandwillbeignored.

    TO STOP SCANNING

    TocanceltheScan,brieflypresstheSCANkey.alowbeepwillbeheardand‘Scan’willdisappearfromthedisplay.

    OPEN SCAN MODE

    USING SCAN IN THE OPEN SCAN MODE

    •ifabusychannelisfound,scanningwillpauseonthatchanneltoallowthesignaltobeheardandwillremainthereforaslongasthechannelremainsbusy.Oncethechannelhasbeenclearfor5seconds,scanningwillresumeautomatically.

    •ifyourradiopausesonabusychannelandyoudon’twishtolistentothatconversation,brieflypresstheSKIP buttononthemicrophone(oroneofthechannelselectorkeys).Theradiowillskipoverthatchannelandresumescanningfromthenextchannelinthesequence.

    •ifyourradioispausedonabusychannelandyouwishtoremainthere,brieflypresstheSCANkey.TheradiowillexittheScanmodeandremainonthebusychannel.

    •Totransmitwhilepausedonabusychannel,simplypressthePTTbutton.TheradiowillexittheScanmodeandremainonthebusychannel.youcannowconverseonthatchannelintheusualway.Whenyouhavefinishedyourconversation,brieflypresstheSCANkeytoresumescanning.

    •ifyourradioisscanningandyouneedtouseyourprioritychannel(foranurgentcalloranemergency),brieflypressthePRIkey.TheScanmodewillbecancelledandtheradiowilljumpstraighttothe prioritychannel.

    NoTe: intheOpenScanmodeyourTX4600willnotallowyoutotransmitwhileitisscanning.ifthePTTbuttonispressedwhilescanning,theradiowillgivealowbeepandwillignorethecommand.yourradiowillonlytransmitwhileitispausedonabusychannel.

    GROUP SCAN MODE

    GroupScanallowsyoutotransmitandreceivenormallyonyourpriority(working)channel,whilecontinuingtoscanseveralotherchannels.ThereceiverwillscantheotherchannelsONLY WHILE THERE ARE NO SIGNALS ON THE PRIORITY CHANNEL.

    ifasignalappearsontheprioritychannelitwilloverrideanysignalsbeingreceivedonanyoftheotherchannels.inaddition,ifyoupressthePTTbuttonatanytime,theradiowilltransmitontheprioritychannelintheusualway.

    SETTING UP THE GROUP SCAN

    referringtotheappropriatesectionsofthismanual:

    1.preselecttheGroupScanmode(seeMENUsettingsonpage18).

    2.Storeyourpreferredworkingchannelintotheprioritychannelmemory(see‘prioritychannel’).

    3.programtherequired‘other’channelsintoyourGroupScanmemory(see‘programmingScanchannels’).

    SCANNING IN THE GROUP SCAN MODE

    ToscanintheGroupScanmode,brieflypresstheSCAN key.ahighbeepwillbeheard,‘Scan’willappearinthedisplayandtheradiowillbeginscanning.

    NoTe: iftherearenochannelsprogrammedintheGroupScanmemorywhenyoupresstheSCANkey(orthereisonlyonechannelprogrammedanditisthesameas

    theprioritychannel),alowbeepwillbeheardandthecommandwillbeignored.

    Whenscanning,theTX4600scansallthechannelsprogrammedintotheGroupScanmemory,withtheprioritychannelbeingscannedaftereveryfourthchannel(Dealerprogrammableoption,ifyourequiredifferenttimingforyourprioritychannel,pleasecontactyourDealer).
