Lo artístico. Lo educativo. El enriquecimiento espiritual. Son tres condiciones y tres posibilidades de superación personal y colectiva que deben ir asociadas. Un festival es una gran oportunidad. Un festival de jazz es LA oportunidad. Los mismos artistas que a la noche nos entusiasmarán con sus interpretaciones, durante el día harán honor a ese dogma que, en el universo del jazz, consiste en la transmisión de conocimientos.Pero también se puede educar desde la misma programación, mediante el impulso a repertorios tan audaces como excitantes.Por eso se explica el gran programa con que los elencos de los Organismos Artísticos del Sur inauguran el festival: Shostakovich y Copland han abrazado el jazz como un elemento enriquecedor de su formación académica.Por eso apostamos a subir la cantidad de clínicas y masterclasses con respecto a la edición 2017.Por eso volvemos a apostar a artistas que han hecho del cruce de géneros una virtud.Por eso volvemos a apostar a todo lo que la escena bahiense puede ofrecernos.Mi mayor deseo es que disfruten el festival pero que, además, cuando termine sientan que han descubierto algo nuevo. Festival Internacional Provincia Jazz

Art, education, and spiritual richness. These are the requirements and three embodiments for self and collective improvement, which have to complement each other. A festival is a great opportunity. A jazz festival is THE opportunity. The same artists bringing us joy with their music at night will be honoring during the day that dogma which, in the universe of jazz, implies the transmission of knowledge.But this program can also be educational by having the strength of equally daring and exciting repertoires.This explains the great program featuring the members of the Organismos Artísticos del Sur for the festival opening: Shostakovich and Copland have embraced jazz as an enriching element of their academic careers.This gives us commitment to increase the number of clinics and master classes provided in the 2017 edition.This reasserts our commitment for artists who have shaped the crossing of genres into a virtue.This reasserts our commitment for everything the Bahía Blanca scene can offer.My greatest desire is that people not only enjoy the festival but also feel they have discovered something new once the festival comes to an end; and that all of us can be moved by that new experience.

La Orquesta Sinfónica Provincial de Bahía Blanca y el Ballet del Sur, pertenecientes a los Organismos Artísticos del Sur, presentan obras de los compositores Dmitri Shostakovich y Aaron Copland en una versión coreográfica.El Ballet del Sur inició su actividad en 1956. Cuenta en su vasto repertorio con las más elevadas expresiones del ballet universal y está dirigido desde 2010 por el maestro Ricardo Alfonso.La Orquesta Sinfónica Provincial de Bahía Blanca aborda un amplio repertorio de música clásica, moderna y contemporánea. Cuenta con más de 100 integrantes y la dirige el maestro Javier Logioia Orbe.

The Provincial Symphonic Orchestra of Bahía Blanca and the Ballet del Sur, members of the Organismos Artísticos del Sur, feature works by composers Dmitri Shostakovich and Aaron Copland in a choreography version.The Ballet del Sur was founded in 1956. Its extensive repertoire includes the most elevated expressions of universal ballet. The company has been under the direction of master Ricardo Alfonso since 2010.The Provincial Symphonic Orchestra of Bahía Blanca embraces a wide repertoire of classical, modern and contemporary music. There are more than 100 members and it is under the conduction of master Javier Logioia Orbe.

A lo largo de 25 años de carrera artística ha sido director de numerosas orquestas, entre ellas las Filarmónicas de Montevideo y de Buenos Aires, con las que realizó innumerables conciertos, grabaciones y giras. Desde 2002 es el principal director invitado de la Ópera de Río de Janeiro.

Born in Tandil, he was a student under Pedro Ignacio Calderón and Guillermo Scarabino. He studied in Argentina, the United States and Austria. Along a 25-year artistic career, he has conducted numerous orchestras, including the Philharmonics of Montevideo and Buenos Aires; with them, he performed innumerable concerts, recordings and tours. Since 2002, he has been the principal guest conductor of the Opera house of Rio de Janeiro.

Egresado de la Escuela Nacional de Danza de Montevideo, ingresó en 1986 al Cuerpo de Baile del SODRE. Creó sus primeras coreografías profesionales para Ballet Hoy, y tras fundar TAIARTE junto a otros profesionales asumió la dirección de su propio grupo, el Ballet Contemporáneo de Santa Fe. Fue Maestro y Coreógrafo del Ballet del Sur antes de convertirse en su Director Titular en 2010.

He graduated from Escuela Nacional de Danza, in Montevideo. He entered the SODRE Corps de Ballet in 1986. He created his first professional choreographies for Ballet Hoy; and, after founding TAIARTE alongside other professionals, he became director of his own corps, the Ballet Contemporáneo of Santa Fe. He was master and choreographer of Ballet del Sur, and later became its Artistic Director in 2010.

ANAT COHEN & TRIO BRASILEIRO

La virtuosa clarinetista Anat Cohen siempre estuvo profundamente conectada con las tradiciones musicales brasileñas –una influencia evidente en muchas de sus primeras grabaciones y actuaciones en vivo–, y encontró almas gemelas en los notables músicos del Trio Brasileiro: el celebrado guitarrista Douglas Lora; uno de los mejores mandolinistas de Brasil, Dudu Maia; y el sorprendente percusionista Alexandre Lora. Se unieron para los álbumes en colaboración Alegria da casa (2016) y Rosa dos ventos (2017), y crearon música que celebra la riqueza de la cultura brasileña y el jazz exuberante de Anat.

Clarinet virtuoso Anat Cohen has always felt a deep connection to the musical traditions of Brazil –an influence readily apparent in a number of her original recordings and live performances–, and found kindred spirits in the remarkable musicians of Trio Brasileiro: the celebrated guitarist, Douglas Lora; one of Brazil’s finest mandolinists, Dudu Maia; and the amazing percussionist, Alexandre Lora. They joined on the collaborative albums Alegria da casa (2016) and Rosa dos ventos (2017), performing music that celebrates the rich and varied culture of Brazil, blended with Anat’s ebullient brand of jazz.

STEFANO DI BATTISTA QUARTET

Nativo de Roma y ejecutante tanto de saxo alto como soprano, Di Battista supo que el sonido del jazz era lo suyo cuando escuchó grabaciones de Art Pepper. Tres álbumes para Blue Note lo hicieron una estrella en el firmamento del jazz internacional con su tono delicioso y perfumado. Luego vendrían incontables presentaciones en vivo, que llevaron a Di Battista por todo el mundo, donde tocó en festivales internacionales y en escenarios prestigiosos con grandes orquestas y con sus propias bandas. En su cuarteto tocan Andrea Rea (piano), Daniele Sorrentino (contrabajo) y Luigi del Petre (batería/percusión).

A native of Rome who plays both soprano and alto saxophone, Di Battista knew the sound of jazz was for him when he heard recordings by Art Pepper. A trio of albums for Blue Note established him as a star in the firmament of the international jazz scene, with his luscious and scented tone. This was followed by an endless live performance activity, which has led Di Battista across the world, performing at international festivals and in prestigious venues with grand orchestras and with his own bands. Playing in his Quartet are Andrea Rea (piano), Daniele Sorrentino (double bass), and Luigi del Petre (drums/percussion).

De las coplas del NOA y el cardenche de México al pansori coreano. Del bombo legüero al janggu y el buk. De las cuerdas del gottan japonés y el pulso de la kalimba a la guitarra y el charango. Baraj se une a Chang Jae-Hyo de Corea del Sur, Sakaki Mango de Japón y los mexicanos Fernando Vigueras y Juan Pablo Villa para afianzar el lazo nacido en el festival japonés de world music Sukiyaki Meets the World y consolidado en la gira que, durante 2016, llevó a Baraj & Cuatro Minimal desde el Lincoln Center neoyorquino a la Quebrada de Humahuaca. Un choque entre lo más antiguo y el neón de Lejano Oriente con una auténtica expresión refrescante de lo ancestral de tierras andinas y aztecas.

A clash between the oldest and the neon of the Far East with an authentic refreshing expression of the ancestral of Andean and Aztec lands.

Juliana inició su carrera como cantante a los quince años; a su vez, hacía teatro, cerámica y pintura. En sus comienzos cantaba jazz en bares y pequeños pubs. Fue en uno de esos conciertos donde conoció a Ale Sergi, junto a quien recorre hoy en día los escenarios del país y el exterior deleitando a un público de todas las edades con el grupo Miranda!, que ha ganado siete premios MTV, cinco Gardel, dos Gaviotas de Plata, cuatro Antorchas en el Festival Viña del Mar, y vendido más de 500.000 discos. En paralelo, sigue tocando con su trío de jazz (batería, piano y contrabajo).

Juliana began her singing career at age fifteen; back then, she was also learning drama, ceramics and painting. Jazz was her first repertoire in bars and small pubs. It was in one of those shows when she met Ale Sergi, and together created Miranda! band. They tour along the national and international scene, captivating an audience without age boundaries. The band has been given seven MTV Awards, five Gardel Awards, two Gaviotas de Plata and four Antorcha Awards in Viña del Mar Festival. They have sold more than 500,000 albums. At the same time, Juliana has also been performing with her jazz trio (drums, piano, and double bass).

Combinando la actividad con otros proyectos simultáneos, el reconocido bajista Javier Malosetti presenta a su nuevo grupo, La Colonia, un cuarteto integrado por los multiinstrumentistas y cantantes Milton Amadeo, Ezequiel Cantero y Tomás Sainz. La Colonia fusiona distintas músicas de origen afroamericano, como soul, jazz y blues haciendo especial foco en el ritmo. El repertorio se completa con composiciones propias y músicas del mundo; también hay lugar para algunos homenajes. Además de realizar numerosas presentaciones en todo el país, Malosetti se encuentra grabando su nuevo álbum, que recopila el material que La Colonia viene desplegando en sus actuaciones en vivo.

Merging his work with other simultaneous projects, renowned bass player Javier Malosetti presents his new group La Colonia, a quartet composed by multi-instrumentalists and singers Milton Amadeo, Ezequiel Cantero, and Tomás Sainz. La Colonia brings together different music styles from Afro-American roots, such as soul, jazz, and blues, giving rhythm a central role. The repertoire covers the musician’s own compositions and music works from the world; some tributes have also been included. Un homenaje a la música del Gato Barbieri a través de la revisión de algunos de sus temas y composiciones propias del cuarteto que integran Pablo Ledesma en saxos, Pepe Angelillo en piano, Carto Brandan en batería y Mono Hurtado en contrabajo. El grupo se formó a partir de la invitación para comisionar un homenaje a Barbieri en el CCK porteño, realizado en la Sala Ballena Azul en abril de 2017. Desde entonces se ha presentado en Capital Federal, La Plata, Corrientes y Mar del Plata, y a mediados de este año editó el disco Gato Barbieri Revisitado.

This is a tribute to the music of Gato Barbieri which includes a revision of the artist’s works and the quartet’s own productions. The group came to life after Pablo Ledesma (saxes), Pepe Angelillo (piano), Carto Brandan (drums), and Mono Hurtado (double bass) were invited to commission a tribute to Barbieri in the cultural center CCK in Buenos Aires (Sala Ballena Azul), in April 2017. Since then, they have performed in the Capital City of Buenos Aires, La Plata, Corrientes, and Mar del Plata. In July, the quartet released Gato Barbieri Revisitado.

Bien de Viento es una banda formada por buenos amigos que interpreta canciones de candombe y versiones llevadas al género. La formación está compuesta por una cuerda de tambores y una amplia línea de vientos, y en sus shows presenta un recorrido por clásicos del género, obras modernas y temas propios en los que el empuje de los tambores de candombe con saxos, trompetas, trombones y otros instrumentos en arreglos divertidos invitan tanto al baile como a la escucha atenta.

Formed by some good friends, Bien de Viento perform candombe songs and versions adapted to the genre. They comprise a cuerda of candombe drums and a wide line of wind instruments. On the shows, they cover the classics of the genre, modern compositions, and their own songs, gathering the spirit of candombe drums with saxes, trumpets, trombones, and other instruments in entertaining arrangements, which provide an opportunity for dancing and rapt listening.

Formada por un interesante cruce de músicos experimentados de Bahía Blanca, de reconocida trayectoria en jazz, soul, neo-soul y música negra, junto a jóvenes instrumentistas y cantantes formados en el Conservatorio Provincial de la ciudad, Guruv Town interpreta temas de artistas, como Hiatus Kaiyote, el productor Anderson Paak, Paper Void, Stevie Wonder y Glasper, entre otros. La banda ha sabido renovar la escena local con el aporte de nuevos integrantes que demuestran una madurez musical sorprendente y una propuesta que apunta a la vanguardia de los géneros.

Integrada por Manuel Aristarán (bajo), Federico Ursino (batería) y Fernando Balestra (teclados), Metatron es una banda bahiense con una propuesta enfocada en el afrofunk, el jazz y el neo-soul que aborda un nuevo paradigma para la música creativa. Se han presentado en diferentes salas de la ciudad con su singular visión musical, que trasciende los límites del género atrincherado y se inspira en todos los ámbitos de la música negra contemporánea.

Guruv Town embrace an attractive crossing of experienced musicians of Bahía Blanca with an acclaimed trajectory of jazz, soul, neo-soul, and black music, teaming with young instrumentalists and singers formed in the Provincial Conservatory of the city. They perform songs by artists, such as Hiatus Kaiyote, the producer Anderson Paak, Paper Void, Stevie Wonder, and Glasper, among others. The band brings fresh air to the local scene, adding new members who show an outstanding musical maturity and a production which pursues the vanguard of genres.

With members Manuel Aristarán (bass), Federico Ursino (drums), and Fernando Balestra (keyboards), the band Metatron from Bahía Blanca brings music focused on Afro-funk, jazz and neo-soul, which covers a new paradigm for creative music. They have displayed their unique vision of music on various venues of the city, going beyond the limits of the gripped genre and gaining inspiration from all the spheres of black contemporary music.

Con un sonido que compendia canciones con influencias de la música sudamericana y de otros folklores del mundo desde la visión del jazz, el cuarteto liderado por el multiinstrumentista Sergio Beresovsky continúa el trabajo realizado anteriormente por el trío Matria. Este nuevo ensamble tiende a favorecer y aprovechar en sus composiciones el espectro sonoro de dos guitarras. A comienzos de 2018 se presentaron en Forüm (Bahía Blanca) en una residencia de tres meses donde se gestó el registro en vivo LUMINA, pronto a salir como álbum.

With a sound comprising songs influenced by South American music and other folks of the world from the vision of jazz, the quartet led by multi-instrumentalist Sergio Beresovsky continues the work of Matria trio. In the productions of this new ensemble, they favor and take advantage of the sound spectrum produced by the two guitars. In mid-February this year, they performed at Forüm (Bahía Blanca), completing a three-month project where they brought forth the live recording of LUMINA, an album soon to be released.

Sudestada 6+4 es la heredera del quinteto de saxos nacido en 2008 en el ámbito del Conservatorio de Música de Bahía Blanca, que en 2012 dio paso a Sudestada Big Band. Con gran suceso, la Big Band se presentó en todas las salas y festivales locales de jazz, hasta cerrar en 2016 la primera edición de Provincia Jazz y presentarse en 2017 en la Usina del Arte porteña. Sudestada 6+4 es hoy un proyecto colectivo de músicos fundamentado en el aprendizaje y la investigación del lenguaje del jazz, que aborda en sus shows un repertorio basado en arreglos contemporáneos de clásicos del jazz y otros que juegan en la frontera del rock, el soul y el funk.

Sudestada 6+4 received the inheritance of the sax quintet born in 2008, in the Conservatory of Bahía Blanca, which later became Sudestada Big Band in 2012; with a huge acclaim, the group performed at all venues and local festivals, closing the first edition of Provincia Jazz in 2016 and performing in Usina del Arte, in Buenos Aires the following year. Sudestada 6+4 comprise today a collective project of musicians consolidated in the learning and research of jazz language. On their shows, they cover a repertoire based on contemporary arrangements of jazz classics and others which sway on the border of rock, soul, and funk.

The freedom, spontaneity, and unique nature of these jam sessions represent the very essence of jazz. En Provincia Jazz, el comediante se suma a Bahía Blanca Jam para volver por un rato a uno de sus primeros amores: en su infancia tocaba la batería en la notable Baby Jazz Band.

Born in comedy and magic, raised in music and the Internet, Radagast grew up and become an eclectic and original artist. From street theater to music for children, he gained international acclaim and more than a million and a half followers on social networks. The artist joins Bahía Blanca Jam in Provincia Jazz to return for a while to one of his first loves: he played the drums when he was a child in the famous Baby Jazz Band.

Before performing with Stefano di Battista Quartet, the Italian saxophonist reveals the secrets of his instrument in a not-to-be-missed improvisation clinic. Di Battista’s repertoire (which will give attendees the possibility of joining with their own instruments) retraces the path which covers from modern jazz to a more traditional one, represented by the two colossal icons Coltrane and Bechet.

Con 25 años de trayectoria musical y 20 en la docencia, Mariana Baraj expone en encuentros con formato de charla y trabajo grupal diversos conceptos basados en repertorios folklóricos de diferentes lugares del mundo, proponiendo analogías con los ritmos y melodías argentinas. No hacen falta conocimientos musicales previos ni hay límite de edad: alcanza con tener inquietudes artísticas y ganas de ejercitar la independencia a la hora de tocar y cantar (y, de ser posible, asistir con algún elemento de percusión, tambor o accesorio).

With 25 years of experience as a musician and 20 years as a music teacher, Mariana Baraj covers concepts based on various folk repertoires from different parts of the world, providing analogies with rhythms and Argentine melodies by means of talks and group work. Prior musical knowledge or age limit is not required: people just need artistic inquiries and motivation for feeling independence when playing and singing (and, if possible, attendance with some percussion item, drum or accessory will be welcome).
