La siguiente descripcin de lo que podrallamarse Lectura en conjunto sugiere algunoselementos muy importantes de lo que implica elproceso de lectura de un idioma escrito.

El seor Smirnoff se cri en el seno familiarhablando ruso, pero l nunca aprendi a leer sulengua materna. Por su parte, el seor Gmez seautoense a leer las letras del alfabeto ruso, peronunca ha tenido tiempo para aprender a hablar ruso.Un da, el seor Smirnoff recibe una carta, escritaen cirlico por un pariente en Rusia. Se la muestra alseor Gmez, comentndole que no la puede leer.El seor Gmez la puede leer pero no la entiende.No hay problema: el seor Gmez lee las palabrasen voz alta, el seor Smirnoff las reconoce y lasinterpreta, y ambos terminan contentos!

El interrogante que hay que hacerse es ste:Quin est leyendo, el seor Gmez o el seorSmirnoff? Es evidente que para contar conhabilidad en un idioma, el alumno tiene quedominar ambas destrezas que adquirieron losseores Gmez y Smirnoff separadamente. Esprecisamente por este motivo que el MtodoPimsleur usa su propia metodologa para ensear aleer.

La lectura se puede definir como la accin dedescodificar materiales grficos con el fin de deter-minar su mensaje. En otras palabras, la lecturaconsiste en regresar al idioma hablado por inter-medio de los smbolos grficos que lo representan.Cada texto escrito representa una posible expresin

hablada, pero slo las personas que tienen algndominio del idioma hablado pueden inferir deforma razonable cmo el texto escrito se podraexpresar en voz alta. Por lo tanto, el hablar el idiomaes un primer paso indispensable para adquirir lacapacidad de leer el idioma y entenderlo. Las

lecciones de lectura en este folleto ofrecen unsegundo paso: se disearon para ayudarle a asociarlos sonidos y los cambios de sonido con las letrasdel alfabeto ingls.

La grabacin de los materiales de lectura de

Ingls I se encuentra al final de cada una de lasunidades, comenzando con la Unidad Nueve. Laslecturas tambin se hallan, todas juntas, al final delcurso. stas se pueden realizar segn ms leconvenga a cada alumno. Se pueden completarindividualmente con cada unidad, en el momentoms propicio una vez terminada la unidad, o sepueden completar todas juntas una vez que seterminen las treinta unidades. Las instruccionessobre cmo proseguir con las lecturas se encuentranen la porcin de audio del curso.

Al efectuar las lecciones, tenga en cuenta que elingls es un idioma repleto de irregularidades, en elque abundan las excepciones. Las orientacionesque se dan en estas lecciones reflejan patrones gen-erales, mas no reglas fijas. No obstante, en la

medida en que vaya aumentando su vocabulario,descubrir que estas excepciones representanmenos y menos dificultades. Usted comenzar areconocer vocablos y los percibir como entescompletos, eliminando as la necesidad devocalizarlos slaba por slaba, o de descodificarlos,letra por letra. Prosiga leccin tras leccin con laslecturas, al paso que ms le convenga, repitiendocada lectura cuantas veces quiera hasta que usted sesienta preparado para pasar a la siguiente unidad.
