EEEEntering RRRRipley CCCChurch by the BBBBaptiste CCCChapel, between two pillars, to the left of the tomb of SSSSir TTTThomas

IIIIngilby and EEEEdeline his wife. IIIIt is an altar tomb of wrought limestone, ornamented round with figures in

supplicating attitudes and between these a number of shields (see below). On the top of the tomb are

whole-length figures of the KKKKnight and his LLLLady. TTTThe former is in complete armour with his head resting

upon an animal representing a wild boar and his feet against some other animal. OOOOn his breast is a

sculptured shield, charged with an estoile of six points. TTTThe lady is habited in a long robe with folding plaits;

her hair is combed back under the cap, which has a lace-border. HHHHer head rests on a pillow, and her feet

against a crouching leopard. BBBBetween these figures lies the mutilated effigy of a male child. RRRRound the

cornice of the tomb is an inscription with the name still legible, but the remainder is nearly obliterated.

TTTThis tomb is said to have been here since the foundation of the Church, having been removed from the OOOOld

CCCChapel.

impaled with the arms of any of the IIIIngilbys’. BBBBut in an ancient pedigree at RRRRipley CCCCastle this SSSSir TTTThomas

summoned to PPPParliament in her right as LLLLord WWWWilloughby from 26th May 1455 to 28th February 1466.

RRRRichard WWWWelles LLLLord WWWWilloughby had a grant in the 4th of EEEEdw4 through the KKKKing’s special favour of all the

goods, chattels and moveables, whereof his father died possessed (they having become forfeited at his

father’s death at the BBBBattle of TTTTowton FFFField on PPPPalm SSSSunday 1461) and the next ensuing year had

WWWWarwick, taking up arms for the restoration of HHHHenry VI made SSSSir RRRRobert WWWWelles, son and heir of LLLLord

WWWWilloughby and WWWWelles a brave and able commander, general of the LLLLancastrian forces. WWWWhereupon SSSSir

RRRRobert drove SSSSir TTTThomas BBBBurgh, a KKKKnight of the KKKKing’s house, out of LLLLincolnshire, pulled down his

standard of LLLLancaster and cried KKKKing HHHHenry. OOOOf this insurrection, as soon as KKKKing EEEEdward had intelligence

he summoned the LLLLord WWWWilloughby and WWWWelles to his presence, but that nobleman on arriving in LLLLondon

with his brother-in-law, SSSSir JJJJohn DDDDymoke, and learning that the KKKKing was highly incensed, fled to the

SSSSanctuary at WWWWestminster, and there determined to remain until his wrath was assuaged. TTTThe KKKKing

hoping, however, to terminate the disturbance in LLLLincolnshire, without being obliged to take the field, sent

for his LLLLordship, and induced him to leave his asylum, upon a solemn promise of safety. He then required of

LLLLord WWWWelles to command his son to lay down his arms, and in the interim marched at the head of what

forces he could collect into LLLLincolnshire, taking LLLLord WWWWelles and SSSSir JJJJohn DDDDymoke, with him. BBBBut when he

arrived within two days journey of SSSStamford, where his adversaries were stationed, he learnt that SSSSir

RRRRobert WWWWelles had refused to obey the injunctions of his father, which had been conveyed to him by letter,

and becoming enraged at the refusal, he caused, in violation of his royal promise, the heads of LLLLord WWWWelles

and SSSSir JJJJohn DDDDymoke to be forthwith cut off. IIIIn revenge of this act of treachery SSSSir RRRRobert WWWWelles, without

awaiting the coming of WWWWarwick, attacked the RRRRoyal AAAArmy, although superior in number to that which he

commanded, but after a most gallant and obstinate struggle, his men at length deserting him, sustained a

defeat and being made prisoner, was immediately beheaded. TTTThe death of the father and his heroic son took
