With this last newsletter edition I would like

to thank our numerous Ghanaian and Ger-

ers. Let me finally introduce my successor

to you, the acting director of the DAAD In-

formation Center, Mr. Felix Barnes, who is

well known to you as our programme offi-

Education and Research. Students, graduates and

young researchers from Germany are hosted for study

and research stays at African Universities. The objective

of this initiative is to strengthen scientific exchange in

both directions by developing joint projects. In the

course of their stay, German academics are being intro-

duced to African research topics in order to strengthen

cross-country collaboration.

The programme also aims at creating sustainable re-

search structures at African Universities by expanding

their research and training capacities. However,

‘Welcome to Africa’ shall not replace other programmes

in the field of individual and co-operational funding.

In 2013 – the first year of the three-year 'Welcome to

Africa' programme – 11 out of 80 applicants have re-

ceived funding.

The DAAD Information Center Accra wishes to bring

this information to the notice of Ghanaian universities

and to encourage them to contact their German part-

ners to apply for funding for collaborative research.

DAAD donates laboratory equipment to De-partment of Biochemisty, Cell and Molecu-lar Biology, University of Ghana

On 24th May, 2013, The deputy Ambassador of the Fed-

eral Republic of Germany, Mr. Thomas Wimmer, pre-

sented a certificate of donation to Dr. Patrick Kobina

Arthur, the applicant for the donation and an Alumnus of

University of Göttingen, Germany. Dr. Arthur is currently

a faculty member of the Department of Biochemistry,

Cell and Molecular Biology, University of Ghana.

This donation was made possible through the

"equipment grants for higher education and comparable

scientific and research institutions in developing coun-

tries" funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Co-

operation and Development (BMZ).

The DAAD award of the equipment grant is towards

a project titled: "Isolation of Novel Antibiotics

against Multi-drug Resistant Staphylococcus

aureus". The specific set of equipment was pur-

chased and shipped from Germany. These in-

cluded a Class II biosafety cabinet, a rotary evapo-

rator as well as plate and shaking incubators.

The application process was strongly supported by

Dr. med. F. Schaumburg and Prof. Dr. med. K.

Becker from the Institute of Medical Microbiology of

the University of Münster in Germany and the head

of department and Dean of the Faculty of Science,

University of Ghana. This equipment donation,

which has been duly received and installed since

20th of February 2013, is key to building capacity

for infectious disease research in Ghana.

For further information about on equipment grants

from the DAAD, email [email protected].

ICT for Africa

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

and the German Federal Ministry of Education and

opment of joint study programmes between Ger-

with specialisations in environmental management,

health management and business computer sci-

ence.

The objectives of this funding programme include

the implementation of ICT Master degree courses,

the training of ICT professionals in sub-Saharan

Africa and also to enhance networking between

scientists in Germany and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Within this funding programme, three projects will

be funded for two years with up to € 150,000 per

project per year. The beneficiary of this pro-

gramme in Ghana is the Accra Institute for Environ-

Ghanaians have the most favourable attitude toward Germany

According to a survey of the BBC, Germany has been rated the most popular country in the world. 26,000 people from

25 countries were surveyed internationally to rate 16 countries and the European Union on whether their influence in the

world was "mainly positive" or "mainly negative". Germany received 59% of positive votes and is therefore perceived

most positively in comparison to the other countries. Germany's popularity might be a result of diligent diplomacy. Ger-

man development aid is supporting many developing countries and a number of German delegations have left positive

impressions abroad. Ghanaians have the most favourable attitude toward Germany, with 84% approving. GlobeScan

and PIPA conducted the survey for the British broadcaster BBC.

Farewell to Dr. Heike Edelmann-Okinda Written by Felix Barnes (Programme Officer, DAAD IC Accra)

Dr. Edelmann-Okinda began her tour of duty in October, 2007, taking over from Dr. Har-

old Olk. Her term of office saw the realization of the Center of Excellence at the Univer-

sity of Ghana with reference to doctoral studies in Public Health and Development Stud-

ies. Since October 2011, the selection process for the new DAAD-Government of

Ghana scholarship programme was initiated. This year, a new call for applicants for the

third phase of the programme is already in the pipeline. These scholarship packages

have afforded many more Ghanaian young men and women the opportunity of doing a

doctorate degree in Germany and Ghana with a prestigious scholarship.

The DAAD Information Center Accra and the entire tertiary education landscape of Ghana is immensely grateful to Dr.

Heike Edelmann-Okinda, who through her tireless efforts, worked to see the realization of such programmes among oth-

ers. On behalf of all the Ghanaian partners of the DAAD Information Center Accra, I say a big THANK YOU to Dr. Heike

Edelmann-Okinda. You have indeed promoted Germany as a study and research destination in Ghana. We wish you

success in all your future endeavours. ‘Ye ma wo mo!’
