Why learn German?
• It’s required• It definitely helps to make friends• Safety – most people will understand English
but important signs/announcements• Learning a language is essential in cultural
immersion! Helps understand mindset.
How to go if you are a freshman
• First off, language requirement. If you have any background in German, make an appointment!
• Academic background. inadequate at times. But if you are ready to work hard, they’ll teach you.
What was I doing?• I was working at the Institute of Pathology,
University of Bonn Medical School.• Prostate cancer research. Had several cell lines. • Great learning experience.Some things I noticed:• Germans not as expected- not organized and
disciplined. Pretty relaxed.• Interns/lab technicians/researches join the same
meetings, treated as a part of the team
Would I recommend it?
•YES1. Build confidence2. Gain international experience3. Improve language/communication skills4. Travel around & experience Europe
Some weird things I did…
• Mitfahrgelegenheit. • Talking to a stranger on a bus/train every day –
got to meet Maja and her family.• NOT take any pictures in Bonn
