What do you sayabout maths when you’re at

home?

I know it’s boring but you have to do it.

I never liked it either.

I have no idea how they teach maths now. I can’t help you.

I hated it at school, could never see the point in half of it.

I can’t do maths. Ask ….. They are better at maths than me.

Maths is everywhere!

The key is curiosity, and it is curiosity, not answers that we model. As we seek to know more about a child, we demonstrate the acts of observing, listening, questioning and wondering. When we are curious about a child's words and our responses to those words, the child feels respected. The child is respected. "What are the ideas that I have that are so interesting to the teacher? I must be somebody with good ideas.”

We must promote a positive and curious attitude towards maths, in the same way that we do with reading and writing.

Maths Challenge

We are asking any and all brave parents to send a video of themselves at their place of work. This could be an office, home, hospital, indoors or outdoors. In this video parents can explain what job they do and how maths is used in their job.

If you feel unable to send a video, you could send a photo with a paragraph underneath explaining what your job is and how you use maths to help you do your job.

Please send your photos/videos to our school office so that they can be shared with your child’s class. Your children would love to see you!
