More than anything else, our work is the main activity we are involved in on a daily basis. It keeps us busy, gives us a sense of purpose, and adds meaning to our lives. It is one of the important pillars that define who we are, both shaping our values and reflecting our identity. Work becomes a source of ambition, goals, opportunities and growth. On a societal level, productive work allows us to play an important role in contributing to our society.

However, work can lead either to satisfaction or dissatisfaction. So if you don’t want to spend the rest of your life doing something you don’t really enjoy doing, then you have to spend some time planning a career that will make you feel happy and fulfilled. It is possible to choose a career quickly but to find a career that is right for you, it is advisable to slow down the process, give it some thought, and take the time to get it right. This is useful whether you are choosing a career for the first time or changing careers for the tenth time.

Exploring the world of work is considered to be one of the most important steps in the career decision making process. The more you explore the world of work the better your decision will be. This step will help you gather enough information about the different industries to find the occupation that best fits your interests, abilities, personality and fulfill your ambitions. Here you will learn about the required knowledge, abilities, and skills you will need in order to succeed. It is a long, progressive process of choosing education, training, and jobs that fit your interests and skills. It differs from job searching which is considered to be a short-term pursuit of a position that matches your financial and career goals.

To help you plan for your future career and explore the world of work more wisely we have prepared the toolkit “Industries at a Glance”. This toolkit follows the US Department of Education Career Cluster Model which divides the world of work into 16 career clusters or industries. Each career cluster consists of career pathways and occupations that share similar knowledge, interests, skills, and abilities.

The purpose of this toolkit is to help you understand the different industries by organizing them into career clusters.

These clusters represent groupings of occupations based on similar skill sets, interests, abilities, and activities. They contain sub-groupings called career pathways that show you the knowledge and skills required for a particular career field. The pathways can also help you understand the vital connection between the courses you take in high school and particular career fields that interest you. You can explore the career clusters based on your interests and then examine a variety of options that will help you succeed in these career fields.

This toolkit will introduce you to the abilities, skills, interests, and the personal attributes that are related to the different career clusters. It will as well highlight the working conditions and the career pathways in relationship to a specific career cluster. In addition, some examples of the careers that fall under each of these career clusters will be given.
