CGIA Endorsement Program - Updates

Page 16: Industrial Trades Advisory Council (ITAC) Meetingcgialliance.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/ITAC-Presentation_4.5.18_final.pdf · 05-04-2018  · Industrial Trades Advisory Council

The CGIA Workforce Development Committee has identified Safety Critical Elements that are considered extremely hazardous and do not meet industry standards for safe work/training practices.

Evidence of these Safety Critical Elements will disqualify a program from continuing the review process.

Please refer to your handout for the list of Safety Critical Elements.

Pre-Safety Review

Page 17: Industrial Trades Advisory Council (ITAC) Meetingcgialliance.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/ITAC-Presentation_4.5.18_final.pdf · 05-04-2018  · Industrial Trades Advisory Council

Therefore, CGIA will now conduct a pre-safety review, one to two months prior to the official on-site review, to ensure that none of the Safety Critical Elements are in evidence, and the official on-site review can be conducted.

If Safety Critical Elements are in evidence, CGIA will make remediation recommendations and the status of the official on-site review will be determined by the CGIA Workforce Development Committee.

“The CGIA hiring conference was a great event. The speakers had great information on what to do and not do when looking for a job in industry. And the connections that my students made with companies in the construction industry were invaluable. I believe CGIA did a great job and I will definitely bring all my students to the next one!”

- Scottie Smith, Welding Instructor – Northwest Florida State College

• Ideas or success stories on marketing high-demand occupations. For example, there is a high-demand for structural fitters in our local area. Unfortunately, training providers are having a hard time getting applicants for their fitting programs. How do we increase the number of fitting applicants for training? We are not experiencing a lack of welding applicants.

• I would like to get industry input on which approach our training provider should focus on to best fit industry needs. Should we focus more on combining programs into one degree or certificate? For instance, having someone take a couple of classes in each trade (welding, millwright, electrical, instrumentation) or should we focus more on a student having one trade so they could be considered higher skilled and closer to journeyman level in that field, upon completion?

Topic Suggestions:

• How many employers or industries would honestly hire students straight out of college with no construction experience? Should community colleges focus on the needs of industries that will actually hire students straight out of college or the industries that require someone to have at least 3-5 years’ experience in construction to be considered for employment?

• Multi-employer testing site concept

• Internship for college students (list of names and businesses that participate). Summer employment opportunities, I have several good students that are looking for work and are having hard time since most employers want 3 years of experience.

Topic Suggestions:

• Can we invite contractors that Evonik, Southern Co, etc. use to these meetings? For example, Evonik doesn’t typically hire welders as direct hires, they use contractors. So, shouldn’t the contractors be informed on the training providers in the area and what Evonik is looking for?

Other topics for discussion?
