Two goals:
1. To interact with younger users and visitors
2. To get 10,000 images from the archive online
• More than 500 million active users
• 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
• Average user has 130 friends
• People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook
Source: Facebook Statistics (July 2010)
What Facebook is suitable for:
1. To interact more with the users and visitors
2. Give a sneak peak behind the scenes
3. Smaller news and updates - too small for a news letter, but still worth sharing
4. It can give the museum a less authoritative voice
5. It is a direct contact with the 197 ‘friends’ who like the museum
6. It is fast and anyone (we chose) can edit the page
7. ... And a lot more
Don’t just do it!
Why should we use Facebook?
As a marketing channel?
For dialogue?
To get more visitors?
To tell about events?
To give us a younger image?
What do you want to gain from the resources (time) spent?
Don’t just do it!
Who will be updating?
Webmaster?
Curators?
Director?
Visitors Services?
All staff?
What kind of communication do you want?
Don’t just do it!
AND are we ready to hear what they say?
“Treat it as a curatorial space NOT as a marketing channel.”
• Photo and video hosting site
• Over 4 billion photos
• Free accounts (limits) and PRO accounts (unlimited, US$24.95 a year)
• Images are hosted by Flickr(and we lose control)
• The users are already there
• ... And they are already discussing industrial photos
• Images are hosted by us(we keep control)
• We need to advertise to get users
• We have to start conversations about the content
CONCLUSION:We wanted our images to be where the users are
VS. Indmus.dk
The results…
• Over 70,000 views in 1 year
• Users from all over the world interested in our content• But it does take some time to upload 10,000 images!
