Introduction• Indoor Air Quality Assessment (IAQ) is conducted to

assess the quality of air in an air conditioning or non-airconditioning space/area in a building.

• Work places fall under this category include offices,educational and training facilities, commercialestablishments, health care facilities, cafeterias andrestaurants.

• A registered IAQ Assessor conducts the assessment inaccordance to the Industrial Code of Practice (ICOP) onIndoor Air Quality (IAQ) as a guide .

Objective

• To meet the Industrial Code of Practice (ICOP) requirement asassessed by (DOSH);

• To rectify the root cause of the IAQ issues in the non - industrialworkplace areas (offices), if any;

• To assess the significance of health risk on employees and visitors atplace of work;

• To identify the source of the air contaminants either within theplace of work or from the outside air;

• To evaluate the exposure of the occupants to the air contaminants;• To evaluate the adequacy of existing control measures;• To describe and recommend appropriate mechanisms to identify,

evaluate and control the measures to prevent or reduce thepotential risk to any person of being overexposed to indoor aircontaminants.

Type of Assesment• The assessment divided into two category:

Pre-Occupancy IAQ Test Post Occupancy IAQ Test

• The pre-occupancy indoor air quality test shall beconducted by the contractor/builder before handingover of the building and shall be done after thecompletion of building flush out.

• Post occupancy indoor air quality test shall beconducted by the contractor/builder after the buildinghas been occupied during defect and liability period.

Method of Assessment1. Walk Through Survey and Interview The assessment was first conducted qualitatively whereby a walk through

survey was carried out at specific location that had been identified in thepreliminary survey of the IAQ assessment. The purpose of walk throughsurvey is to identify any potential indicators of IAQ issues which include:

a) Visual evidence of moisture problems or microbiologicalcontamination;

b) The presence of unusual odors;c) Potential and locations of specific pollutant sources;d) Pollutant pathways and pressure differentials;e) Inadequate ventilation or air movement;f) Excessive settled dust.

Interviews will be also conducted with selected personnel on complaints orillness occurred during the time of employment.

a) Sick building syndrome reported symptoms;b) Perceived indoor environment;c) Medical complaint andd) Relevant non-invasive clinical examination (if permitted)

Method of Assessment (cont’)2. Qualitative And Quantitative Assessment of IAQ Issues in Workplace Appropriate sampling numbers of air sample that being identified and

sub-sample from the work unit shall be determined and followed by thefollowing step of monitoring tools in IAQ assessment:a) Outside Air sampling will be determine as a control to measure the

quality between inside and outside air. This will indicate whether thesource of contaminant is from outside or inside the building.

b) Location of air supply diffuser, return point and number of occupantwithin the area/room.

c) Area sampling based on the activities, high to low number ofoccupant and complains.

d) Control area in the offices will be determine within the buildinge) Total Bacteria and Total Fungi will be performed if identified/ un-

known level of the risk.

Method of Assessment (cont’)4. Compilation and Assessment of Data The following shall be carried out:

a) The assessment will be compared with the ICOP- IAQ 2010 regulatedby DOSH- Malaysia.

b) The assessment will include the qualitative assessment andquantitative assessment of IAQ issues in workplace as regulated byDOSH and other relevant standard in indoor air expert.

c) Standard protocol of the IAQ assessment will be strictly followed bythe DOSH guideline, American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA),and Malaysia Industrial Hygiene Association (MIHA).

d) Simple statistical analysis will be conducted to determine significantrelationship between the risk of the occupant and the current indoorenvironment profile.

1. Indoor Air Quality Control System• Consist of 3 Module:

a. Aluminium FilterElectrostatic Aluminium Filter (EAF)Photocatalyst Aluminium Filter (PAF)

b. UV Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI)UVC Lamp + Housing

c. Electrodynamic Carbon ProcessorPatented carbon processor

• Location and Installation Air Handling Unit (AHU) – supply and return duct or plenum Supply Diffusers

• Output Aluminium Filter – as a replacement for primary filter which filtering the

particles from entering the AHU. (Maintenance free) Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) – UV type C (200nm -10nm

radiation) works as sanitizer eliminates all bio aerosol from air, bacteriamould and fungus. The DNA of the bio aerosols deteriorate and thusprevent it from multiplying.

Electrodynamic Carbon Processor – works as an odour eleminator as well aslimiting CO2 from entering the air by collecting carbon from the return airand enhance O2 to the surroundings.

2. CO2 Sensor + Motorised Fresh Air Damper• The CO2 sensor and motorised fresh air damper is being control and

monitored by BAS system.• The CO2 sensor is located at the return air grill to evaluate the amount of

CO2 in the air conditioning area that serve by the AHU.• The BAS system will set the value of acceptable CO2 (e.g 700 ppm) and

show the real time CO2 amount at present return air.• The BAS will send a signal to the actuator of the fresh air damper to

deflect accordingly (if the amount of CO2 exceed the acceptable valueset by the BAS operator.

• Thus, the amount of CO2 can be mitigated by enhancing the fresh airentering the AHU.
