Our objectives were to: Showcase and raise awareness of Indigenous health research programs at the Doherty Institute. Deepen our conversations with leaders in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health about how we can best partner with their communities. Build on the growing community of practice advancing Indigenous health in the Melbourne Biomedical Precinct. We are grateful for the wisdom shared and the generosity of spirit shown to our Institute as we grow our capacity. Thank you to our speakers from The Lowitja Institute, the Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation, the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, the Charles Darwin University, the Poche Centre for Indigenous Development, the Doherty Institute and the University of Melbourne. Methodology Key steps to build the capacity of our Institute: Initial steps (completed): 1) Inclusion of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander health as a priority in the Institute's strategic plan; 2) Appointment of theme leaders. Ongoing activities : 1) Auditing of research activities; 2) Seeking counsel from leaders and elders of Australia’s First Peoples; 3) Developing a community of practice within the Institute; 4) Inviting key leaders to present at the Institute; 5) Engaging with the University of Melbourne and its existing community partners. Future plans (underway): 1) Develop recruitment and mentoring pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander PhD students and professional research staff; 2) Develop a strategic plan stemming from the Reconciliation Action Plan. 3) Evaluate and review our effectiveness. We are committed to improving the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people by engaging with communities and hearing of their priorities, raising the profile of Indigenous Health within our institute and and developing pathways to develop Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership in biomedical research. We will strive to ensure our research translates into clear and immediate benefits not just a contribution to the body of knowledge. As Associate Professor Steven Tong summarised, these are great lessons, not only for our work with Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people, but great research principles full stop.
