It is not clear what the schedule is for the PSL to design the yoke and cable tray (BNL) for the top of the up-side down APA. In the short term we can use our old ProtoDUNE APA and modify the distance of the rails so the latches work properly for the tests in April.

HV latch testing Work list and Schedule

Week of March 2nd

WHM

Latches Overview:

Over-all the week was extremely successful testing both the top and bottom latches using the prototype top FC and a “frame” we constructed for the bottom. There is no design for the bottom support system for the normal APA yet. This needs to be designed and vetted with the APA consortia. The Upside-down APA needs more serious work since there is currently no design for the top or the bottom of the APA on how the latches are supported. Cable designs need to be added into the models to insure there are no interferences.

It is clear that we need to do both drifts in the tests for ProtoDUNE II. When the first drift is deployed there is much more movement between the distance of the APA and CPA. When the second drift volume is deployed everything is much more rigid. It is not clear what the schedule is for the PSL to design the yoke and cable tray (BNL) for the top of the up-side down APA. In the short term we can use our old ProtoDUNE APA and modify the distance of the rails so the latches work properly for the tests in April.

Top Latch:

The first few attempts did not work very well because there were too movement with the slots on the old hinge design. We should have the new hinges here for the April tests his will help. Once we made it so the FC did not slide in the wrong direction things lined up much better. The location of the latch on the FC may still need to be adjusted after we have the proper hinge. We were worried that the latch came up too high but it appears with zero clearance we can latch and unlatch. Vic is going to look at redesigning the top of the latch to give us a little more clearance, but it does work as it is.

Once locked everything becomes very nice and rigid. It was not difficult to un-deploy.

Latch gets hung up in this position but takes very little force to get it to drop

1-The alignment tab on the back of the latch needs to have some of the weld ground off so that it does not catch. This should make it drop into place much easier. You would only need to have an alignment tab on the side you can reach.

2-The slots on hinges in the yoke provided by PSL on the APA are too wide compared to the width of the HV latch and need to be narrowed. We had to drill the holes bigger as well. The alignment is not very good, we should confirm the latch design and the position of the PSL yoke hinge and confirm that they are all in the correct location.

3-Need the two new CPA hinges- Confirm that they will be here in time

Bottom Latch:

This worked well on the first try, except the mount for the hinge was made out of unistrut so things did not rotate as smoothly as it would if a proper hinge mount was installed. As mentioned, this needs toe be design soon. It will also have to be designed for the up-side down APA. We did not have time or worry about the deployment phase of the bottom FC. This needs to be tested and confirmed. We have all the components on hand to test the planned deployment.

End Wall Prep:

End Wall beam

The new concept is to have the lifting I-beam also be the hanging I-beam. This would allow us to lift a short distance away from the CPA and APA and slide the completed End Wall into it’s final position.

1-Need to order additional I-beam, determine if 6” Al beam is OK. Flange is only 3.375” and EW hanger is 4”?

Need to-drill out hanger bolt pattern and holes for sliding the beam into position.

Design blocks that will not allow the beam to slide north/south on the bridge beams when moving, they should blot in place during the lifting process and when in the final position.

2-Locate both beam and EW hangers to align distance to back wall is possible. The distance is ~1.9m for the centered ProtoDUNE II. Right now the CPA and APA are at 1.57 so we could just move the end wall onto the other side of the brown support beam and have the same access clearance as we would at CERN.

3-Need 2 more end wall hangers? Confirm

4-Order proper sized cable on Monday along with proper End Wall “hooks”-Charles

12m CPA:

I did not work on this so I don’t have any comments at this point.

Schedule: NEED TO CONFIRM WHEN STUFF IS SHIPPING-Takes up to ~2 weeks via fright

1-We should select a date for Vic and Tom (LSU) to come we can make the week f March 3oth or March 6th work. Need to confirm date and get housing set up.

2-Need to get numbers from everyone to set up the week of April 13th and 20th so I know what to expect. If we know in advance we can set up a few dinners at the resorts plus cater lunches if needed. Otherwise people will have to purchase their own lunch stuff and bring it with.

3-Coronavirus: We should confirm that none of the people coming know they have not been to any of the “hot” spots or any of the level 3 countries in the last 2 weeks. It is possible that this will change in the next several weeks.

Documentation:

1-We need everyone’s procedure documents for building End Walls and FC components submitted to us so we ca write a matching HA. Cole will help with the format as well. We need to get them posted on EDMS.

2-Need to update the Assembly procedures as well. Bo has some documentation written again we need to get them in the proper format and write matching HAs.

3-
