Past History: Liverpool Daresbury T2K Collaboration

• Liverpool and Daresbury have worked on many major collaborations, including the T2K Basket, stand and ECALs

• The Basket and Stand was Designed at Liverpool and load tested at Daresbury, whereas the ECALs were designed at Daresbury, manufactured by our friends at Sheffield and Lancaster and final assembly at Liverpool!

APA Mechanical Inspection – Laser Tracker

• Uses a retro reflector, often placed by hand.

• The laser tracker pics up the retro reflector and ‘follows’ it around.

• A remote is used to take a point or series of points.

• Can be taken on site

• A certain distance between laser tracker and reflector is required for more accurate results.

• Works directly with CAD

APA Mechanical Inspection-Photogrammetry

• Place a number of photogrammetric survey markers onto key components to a general tolerance of 0.5mm and then measure the precise position of the marker with respect to “features of significance” on the component using optical CMMs.

• Use photogrammetry to measure the relative positions of groups of survey markers to each other.

• Combine the data from photogrammetry with the database of translations to calculate the positions of the “features of significance” from the survey-marker data.

Cabling at SURF • This is very well covered and is being looked at by Manhong

etc.

• This is critical as it is leads directly to the final design of the

APAs.

• Decisions will need to be made and several options are

available such as running the cables through the frame section

or on the outside.

• Many people have an opinion on this and it is essential to bring

these groups together if we are to meet the final APA design

target.

APA Boxes and Unpacking at SURF • Requirement is to install 6 APAs and 2 CPAs in 4 days

- 2 -10 hour shifts shifts per day (8 hours working)

• The current box holds 1 APA and is not easy to take on/off the trucks and takes around 2 days to take out and be ready for turning round.

• A new box will be needed and will hold 2 APAs and will need to be unloaded and unpacked within 1 shift.

• Valuable time is needed to rotate the APA, feed down the shaft, joined together and cabling fed through.

• Design effort is needed as this has a direct impact on the APA final design.

• Should we be able to stack APA boxes 2 high if space is limited? May do this with CPAs

• It may be a good idea to also have lifting points at the top of each box so fork lifts can be avoided

• The number of boxes will need to be calculated also i.e. will need to take into account time from manufacturing site dispatch to SURF and return.

- Transport cost implications will help decide this.

- One idea is to manufacture all the boxes in the UK and then use these at the US sites, which would reduce overseas transport costs back to the UK.

APA Delivery to SURF • There is room for 3 APA boxes containing 6 APAs

• The APAs are installed over 4 days – 8 10 hour shifts.

• Boxes will need to be removed and quickly and sent back to a holding area, ready for the next 6 APAs

• Can we have a continuous arrival/box removal system of APAs, CPAs and FCs?

APA Unpacking and construction • Slide courtesy of Vic Guarino

• This operation will need to be done in a few hours.

• Fast attachment and release tooling will be needed.

• Tooling attachment points will also be needed on the new APA design, so this needs to be designed at an early stage

Docdb 6260 • Created by Vic Guarino

• Step file and pdf drawings exist

• Initially the step file would not load into Creo, but it was discovered this was a compressed step file. Vic has replaced this with an uncompressed step file, which works fine.

• This page will be under constant revision and will be a valuable asset.

• Information regarding new designs will need to be fed to Vic’s team in order to keep the model accurate

• APA information is needed such as electronic box sizes, position of the APA relative to the field cage and mounting points.

- Currently using ProtoDUNE dimensions.

APA DUNE Prototypes • There is a need for a full double

height DUNE APA prototype 12.8m tall x 2.3m wide

• This will mean a working height of around 14m

• The reason is to fully test a double height APA assembly, for cabling, connections, space requirements etc.

• This can be done at Ash River (see picture)

• Would we envisage doing this in the UK?

• Would need a significant amount of time, effort.

Integration documents • Integration and Installation Document has been filled in and sent to

Steve Kettell, Eric James and Jim Stewart.

- This document describes the interface between the APA consortia and the underground installation team (UIT).

• DUNE Interface Document Template: Integration Facility and Consortium-APA.

- This document describes the interfaces between the DUNE far detector Integration and Test Facility (ITF)

• DUNE Integration and Test Facility (ITF) form is in the process of being sent.

- This document is to request a holding area close to SURF for a transport buffer, repackaging, component fabrication by skilled technicians, component integration, Inspection, Testing and Repair of damaged components, visitor support.

- Anyone wishing to get involved with this, please let me know.

Summary of design effort • APA and winding machine design is well in hand, effort may be

needed with FEA.

• Cabling and joining of the 2 APAs is currently being worked on

• The overall layout is well in hand

• APA transport box needs a re design in order to allow 2 APAs to

be transported at once and make unloading much quicker

• Lifting and installation tooling at SURF needs effort to make this

much quicker.

• Time is of the essence and 6 APAs and 2 CPAs, attached Field

Cages and cabling needs to be attached within 64 hours so any

work carried out in this time needs to be as slick as possible.
