WESLEYANOCTOBER 2008

I have been in some form of ministry for soon to be 30 years now. I have gone

to school with pastors, taught pastors and now, going on six years, had the privi-

lege of serving pastors as DS here in Indiana South. I have come to the conclu-

sion that some of the true heroes in our society are pastors.

You are the ones that work sacrificially making, at many times, less money

than if you were working secular jobs. You are the ones that are on call 24/7

helping the hurting, and comforting those who are in need of ministry. You are

the ones that carry the burden for lost souls and have a real desire to see all peo-

ple walk with God. You are the ones that are asked to preach funerals, deal with

the dying and death, do weddings, and be the “front” person for the church in

the community.

You are the ones that are called upon to manage conflict and be a peacemaker

even when you have been done wrong. You are the ones that stay in a tough as-

signment even when humanly it would be easier to walk away. You are the ones

that faithfully study the Scriptures and stay on your knees asking God to lead

you as you lead others. You are the ones many times doing work behind the

scenes that never gets noticed, only by God Himself. You are the ones that, at

times, preach your heart out only to hear your parishioner brag on the TV

preacher they heard before they came to church.

You are the ones, that a lot of times, are expected to mow the grass, check the

commode handles after service, drive the church van, change the church sign,

clean the church, and several other jobs that all come with the “package.” You

are the ones that are called upon to give counsel about humanity problems rang-

ing from the domestic/family crisis to societal issues. You are the ones that ulti-

mately have to be concerned about the finances to make sure all the bills get

paid. You are the ones that week after week are faithful to your assignment with-

out ever being in the bright lights of celebrity status that some pastors enjoy by

being highlighted in magazines like Christianity Today for a book they wrote or a

school they started.

Take heart my friends because you are the ones that, one day, God is going to

reward for saying “YES” to Him and serving in ministry. As it says in Romans

1:15b, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad

tidings of good things!” You are the ones carrying the Good News of the Gospel, so

keep it up!

Prayer and Fast RetreatWe are once again this year having a Prayer and Fast Retreat for the district. It

will be Monday & Tuesday, November 10th & 11th at Spring Mill Inn. It willbegin at 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Monday and then Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. – 12:00noon (EST). This is a great time for pastors to get together and pray for theirchurches, their communities, their nation, and their families. We would love for asmany as can to attend.

Spiritual Formation District TourPlease mark Saturday, November 8, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. EST

on your calendar. The Paoli Wesleyan Church is going to host a district widetraining day. Dr. Jim Dunn and his staff from the Spiritual Formation Departmentwill be the presenters. There will be sessions for those ministering to adults, teens, and children. All pastors, staff, and lay people are invited.

This is a crucial training day for our district. The International Center is helpingto fund this event so you are strongly encouraged to be there if at all possible. Mygoal is to serve you by offering all the facilitation in ministry we can on the districtlevel without having something planned so often it interferes with your localagenda.

PASTOR APPRECIATIONOctober is Pastor Appreciation Month. The Wesleyan Church has desig-

nated October 12th as Pastor Appreciation Day. Don’t forget your pastor and hisfamily as they work very hard at what God has called them to do.

Grace Pointe Wesleyan Church

For months now we have been praying and trying to get a church open inClarksville area. Praise the Lord we now have a new church plant in Clarksvillecalled Grace Pointe Wesleyan. For now we are leasing a building that was previ-ously a Christian Bookstore. Recently Deb and my daughters joined me as we wor-shipped with the new church. Pastor Ron Freeland and his wife Pat, whoplanted our church at Corydon, are doing a great job of leading this new endeavor.

Just a few weeks ago, they had a quartet who donated their ministry to them. They had 44 in attendance including the quartet and some visitors. There was a ladythere that moved from Colorado and went walking, trying to find a church. BroRon reports, “We had prayer around the altar at the end of the service for her sonwho just had surgery and encountered some problems. She looked at me with tearsin her eyes and said ‘I’m so glad you (the church) were here.’ God is blessing and ex-citing things are happening at Grace Pointe.” – Pastor Ron Freeland

town, IN 47145 or 812-633-4418. If you need someone that will love your

people and preach the Word faithfully, give Bro. Philo a call.

Pastor Jeff & Lurlene Allen & family wererecently installed as the new pastor at

Shelbyville Grace Wesleyan.May God bless their ministry.
