THE

INDIAN

INSTITUTE

OF

SCIENCE

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata (1839-1903) was one of thosevisionaries who was convinced, even as early as the end of

nineteenth century, that the future progress of this country dependedcrucially on research in Science and Engineering. He created anendowment in 1898 to establish a University of Science foreducating and developing the faculties of the best of our youngmen and women. He envisaged this university as destined topromote original investigations in all branches of learning and toutilize them for the benefit of India.

It was Lord Ramsay, Nobel Laureate and discoverer of the noblegases who was deputed by the Royal Society of England to studythe proposal for a University made by Jamsetji and after a quicktour of our country chose Bangalore as a suitable place for thisInstitution.

His Highness Shri Krishnaraja Wodeyar-IV, the Maharaja of Mysorecame forward with an offer of 372 acres of land, free of cost, inBangalore and promised other necessary facilities.

The detailed report that emerged from various committeesappointed to study the constitution of this university recommendedthat “the Institute be devoted to experimental science and that itaim at training student, in experimental methods, carrying out originalresearch …”

Set up in 1909, the Institute has not only fulfilled the expectationsof the visionaries but continues to be a leader in frontier researchand training in Science and Technology in the country.

FROM

THE

DIRECTOR'S

DESK

It is our great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you to visit theInstitute and interact with our students and faculty.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is the oldest institution of higherlearning and has been described at various times as the 'Jewel in the Crown'of Indian Science. It has sustained a high level of excellence for nearly acentury now and has been rated as one of the best institutions in the world. It has been a mother of many institutions, a partner to the nation in almostall its developmental and strategic initiatives and a trustworthy think-tankfor industry.

You may be aware that our Alumni occupy leadership positions in industry, academia, research and policy making bodies. Our students are admittedthrough a nation wide selection process and are the very best in their chosenprofession. Our students are exposed to the best of facilities, guided byfaculty of international repute and are engaged in solving problems in frontierareas of science and technology of relevance nationally and internationally. We are confident that our students would provide extremely well-trainedmanpower and possess the leadership qualities that you are undoubtedlylooking for.

Our Placement Section, a professionally run outfit of Centre for Scientific &Industrial Consultancy will help you in your efforts to recruit our studentswho would grow with you as future leaders in their chosen areas.

This booklet is intended to provide you an overview of the research anddevelopmental activities carried out in various Department/Centres. Thecourses that we offer are also listed. The students who go through ourMasters' programme undertake Project work which constitutes a majorrequirement for the conferment of the degree. These are often related to thestate-of-the-art research being carried out in the Departments.

The Institute is endowed with the best of the computing facilities throughour Supercomputer Education and Research Centre and access to the widestinformation resources are available through our JRD Tata Library. Irrespectiveof the department they belong to, every student is exposed to and wouldacquire mastery over a wide variety of computer systems, and software.

ABOUT

OUR

STUDENTS

Indian Institute of Science, the only institution in India to be ranked withinthe top 20 Universities of the world, confers Master degree in various disciplines

of Engineering to about 450 students every year, in addition to the Doctoraldegree to around 350 scholars in Science and Engineering Departments. IISccontinues to attract the cream of young graduates from various states of Indiaand shapes these potential leaders to face the ever increasing challenges ofindustries and R&D Centres.

The M.E (Master of Engineering) / M.Tech (Master of Engineering) degree, programme, M. Des. (24 months) and M. Sc. (Engg.) degreethrough initial course work followed by research (completed in about 24-30months) are equally popular. Flexibility in selecting the appropriate courses andthe availability of abundant computing and other state-of-the-art facilities in allthe departments help our graduating students to be on par with (and mostoften superior to) their counterparts from other Institutions.

Following are the specific streams of specialization of our post-graduate students:

! Electrical Communication ! InstrumentationEngineering ! Materials Science

! Computer Science and ! Materials EngineeringAutomation ! Aerospace Engineering

! ! Mechanical Engineering! Electronics Design & Technology ! Chemical Engineering! Electrical Engineering ! Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences! Signal Processing ! Civil Engineering! {Geotechnical Engg./Structural!

!

! Product Design & Manufacturing

Computational Science

! Management Studies

A brief account of the R&D specializations and the courses that the students gothrough in different departments are listed in this brochure and are indicative ofthe exposure that our students have had. While the Ph.D. and M. Sc. [Engg.]students graduate at regular intervals through the year, ME/M. Tech. studentscomplete their course by mid July, every year. The most appropriate time forprospective employers to initiate the interview process at IISc is about 6 monthsbefore the students complete their curriculum requirements as stated above.Organizations are therefore advised to get in touch with Placement Section,CSIC at the earliest. We are open throughout the year to act as a link between ourstudents and employers.

AERODYNAMICS

Laboratory for Hypersonics and Shock wave Research (LSHR)

Underwater Shock Wave Generator

An underwater electric discharge device has been designed, fabricated and successfully used for creating spherical micro shock

waves.

Vertical Shock Tube

A vertical shock tube mounted on a frame for industrial applications of shock waves. This facility can be used for injecting the

preservatives in the liquid form into the wood samples. This would help in increasing the strength of the wood for industrial

usage.

Diaphragmless Shock tube

One of the drawbacks of the shock tubes is the variation in the diaphragm rupture pressure from shot to shot. This in turn

makes the reproducing of the exact test conditions very difficult. In applications like the measurement of kinetic data for the

high energy chemical reactions it is essential to reproduce the test conditions typically within 2% accuracy. This can be achieved

by avoiding the use of metallic diaphragm to produce the shock wave in the driven section. Hence we have developed a novel

diaphragmless shock tube by using a rubber membrane which acts like a fast acting valve.

Combustion Gasification & Propulsion Laboratory

A transient one-dimensional flame propagation code was developed at the laboratory and has been used for extracting

fundamental combustion features of several gaseous fuel-oxidant mixtures. The code was also extended to spherical

propagating flames to extract the stretch effects and these were calculated for several canonical fuel-oxidant combinations

and the results compared with experimental results of stretch effects. These were used to demonstrate that full chemistry

is needed to explain the stretch effects of fuel-oxidant mixtures.

The major areas of research are revolved around numerical modelling of monsoon dynamics, the tropical climate

with a focus on understanding the monsoon and its variability, numerical simulation of upper ocean dynamics,

coupled ocean-atmospheric models, rainfall variability and its impact on agriculture, laboratory modelling of

atmospheric convection, theoretical and experimental studies of the atmospheric boundary layer, remote sensing

Algorithmic Algebra Lab

Algorithmic algebra deals with giving constructive techniques to solve algebraic problems. Some of the important

problems addressed in this area are solving polynomial systems of equations, finding suitable set of generators to algebraic

objects, factoring polynomials and so on. The theory of Groebner bases (special set of generators for an ideal in a

polynomial ring) has led to a rapid development of this area from the past three decades. Groebner bases have applications

in various areas such as cryptography, coding theory, graph theory, integer programming to name a few.
