Short-term Training Program (STTP) on
Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM)
IIITDM Kancheepuram was established in the year 2007 to focus on Informa-tion Technology enabled Design and Manufacturing education for catering to the needs of the industry. It is one of the Institutes of National Importance, fully funded by MHRD, Govt. of India. The institute o�ers four undergraduate pro-grams, �ve dual degree programs, four post graduate programs and doctoral programs. The courses are more oriented towards design and manufacturing, where the students get specialized in their domain with design as a connecting thread. Design is the primary step for any manufacturing activity. Proper design with manufacturing knowledge shortens the product development life cycle. Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) is typically meant for designers to eliminate manufacturing di�culties and minimize manufacturing, assembly and logistics costs in conventional manufacturing methods by tailoring the design. Whereas, for Additive Manufacturing (AM), often simply called 3D printing, provides nearly unrestricted freedom to design parts. It o�ers design-ers and manufacturers the ability to produce shapes and designs that would be impossible to produce using conventional manufacturing technologies such as molding or machining. Designing products for layer based Additive Manufac-turing (AM) is gaining importance as AM opens-up new possibilities for opti-mized design. The topics include opportunistic DfAM, re-design for AM, developing design guidelines, generative design and topology optimization, light weight-ing structures, restrictive DfAM, AM materials & process capabilities, Design by features and complexities in design. The program also includes hands-on train-ing to various software tools related to DfAM.

This workshop focuses on DfAM meth-ods that identi�es opportunities for in-creased complexities in design. The aim of the workshop is to understand the new found design freedom in Additive Manufacturing and optimizing the ex-isting design using various tools. Facul-ty, Research scholars, Postgraduate and Graduate students from various institu-tions and delegates from the industries can register for the program. An under-standing of various design methods, and computer-aided design are the prerequi-sites for attending the program.
