Why is over population a problem?

• Current population: Over 1 billion

• Birth rate is about 44 births/minute (U.S. about 14)

• Population density: 610 people/ sq. mile (U.S.= 65 per sq mile

• Most live along the Ganges River

• Water is hard to come by in India so people have to live by the rivers

• Also, the river is considered sacred in Hinduism– Use the river for drinking, cleaning, bathing

• However, pollution is becoming a major problem
